Illustrating the Nurse´s Experiences of Identifying Sepsis in Healthcare (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Early treatment has proven effective at reducing the risk that sepsis will lead to death or other serious consequences. Nurses play a key role in the early identification of sepsis. It is therefore important to illuminate the challenges they face and how their work can be facilitated. Aim: The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate nurses’ experiences of identifying sepsis in medical care. Method: A literature review with a qualitive an inductive approach was conducted. The results of 12 systematically selected qualitative studies were synthesized. The studies used individual and focus group interviews to collect data. Results: Three main themes and eleven subcategories were identified: (1) organizational factors, including workload, need for more staff and time for evaluating patients an guidelines, (2) collaboration in teams, including the role of counseling from the team, good communication and documentation, and having the authority to act, and (3) identification of sepsis, including the need for early identification, complexity of the condition, knowledge, training, and the role of technical tools. Conclusion: Nurses face multiple challenges in identifying sepsis, including a high workload, time pressure and lack of knowledge. There are also factors that may facilitate their work, including well-functioning teams and education, particularly about new technical tools.
