Trans People’s Experiences Of Encounters With Medical Personell In the Somatic Health Care : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Trans people are a minority group who are discriminated against in society. The healthcare sector ought to offer every patient health care of equal quality. Medical personnel are obligated to care for trans people with person-centered approach and respect for the individual person’s situation. Aim: The aim of the literature review was to put together the experiences of encounters with medical personnel in somatic health care among trans people. Method: The study was conducted in the form of a literature review that analyzed and compiled results from 12 empirical studies with a qualitative design. Result: Three main categories emerged based on the aim of the study. The main categories were cis-normative attitudes and lack of knowledge, ignorant or offensive treatment and professional and empathetic treatment. Conclusion: Trans people's experiences of encounters with medical personell were characterized by cis-normative approaches among the healthcare staff and a lack of knowledge of trans people. Positive experiences with open-minded and empathetic staff who conducted good person-centered care were also found but in minority. More knowledge of trans people is needed among medical personell in order to provide good, person-centered care.
