Ethnic Background and Employment Opportunities in Sweden : A Qualitative Study Aiming to Investigate Ethnic Impact on Employment Opportunities in Sweden (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to investigate whether certain people experience ethnic discrimination and its impact on employment opportunities in Sweden. The study is based on qualitative interviews to investigate people's experiences of ethnic discrimination. The participants have a background from the Balkans and were born and raised in Sweden. The survey addresses several important concepts such as structural discrimination, resume whitening and stigma. 

The results of the study show that ethnic discrimination is experienced in a recruitment process and in the labor market. The respondents use various strategies to be able to navigate the Swedish labor market. Structural discrimination has been shown to be a significant factor in why ethnic discrimination arises in the Swedish labor market can be a contributing factor to people with an ethnic background other than Swedish in some cases finding it more difficult to enter the labor market. 

Abstract [sv]

Syftet med studien är att undersöka om vissa personer upplever etniskt diskriminering och dess påverkan på anställningsmöjligheter i Sverige. Studien baseras på kvalitativa intervjuer för att undersöka personers upplevelser av etnisk diskriminering. Deltagarna har en bakgrund från Balkan och är födda och uppvuxna i Sverige. I undersökningen tas flera viktiga begrepp upp som strukturell diskriminering, resume whitening och stigma.Resultatet av studien visar på att etnisk diskriminering upplevs vid en rekryteringsprocess och på arbetsmarknaden. Respondenterna använder sig av diverse strategier för att kunna navigera på den svenska arbetsmarknaden. Strukturell diskriminering kan vara en betydande faktor till varför etniskt diskriminering uppkommer på den svenska arbetsmarknaden och har varit en bidragande faktor till personer med en annan etnisk bakgrund än svensk kan i vissa fall ha det svårare att komma in på arbetsmarknaden.
