Social inclusion for persons with disabilities: Voices from Vietnam : A study on work for and experiences of social inclusion in Da Nang and Hoi An (English)
Abstract [en]

This study investigates how organizations in Da Nang and Hoi An, Vietnam, contribute to and experience social inclusion for persons with disabilities in the society. The study aims to explore staff perspectives within these organizations about their experienced challenges and strategies for creating an inclusive environment. Previous studies on the subject have identified several challenges regarding social inclusion for persons with disabilities, such as physical environment, educational and work-opportunities due to lack of governmental support, successful laws and discrimination. Using a qualitative method and semi-structured interviews, we gathered data to explore the organizational support in the communities and their view on social inclusion in society. Our findings reveal that while progress has been made in the legal system, challenges such as societal attitudes, limited resources and inadequate infrastructure persist. However, voluntary organizations play an important role in supporting persons with disabilities and creating opportunities in their everyday life and their social inclusion in society. By shedding light on the strategies, challenges and successes of organizations in Vietnam, the hope is to emphasize the importance of learning from diverse contexts to foster inclusive practices globally.
