Children are affected by their environment : A qualitative study on social workers experiences of meeting children who have witnessed violence (English)
Abstract [en]

This study aims to explore the psychosocial effect on children who witness Domestic violence and abuse. The study will further dive into examining how social workers provide support to these children and address the challenges encountered in doing so. Children who are exposed to domestic violence, commonly are prone to long term emotional and behavioral issues. This study, grounded in a qualitative methodological approach, includes interviews with professional social workers alongside a review of previous research and theoretical frameworks that inform their work. The evidence points back to children affected by domestic violence being at a higher risk for developing mental health disorders which may lead to social isolation. Social workers have a great impact dealing with these situations and through interventions such as counseling, safety planning and family focused strategies. The study not only highlights the beneficial view but also the substantial challenges, including insufficient resources, organizational constraints and ethical dilemmas inherited in working with families affected by this violence. This research enhances understanding of how social workers can strengthen their role in protecting and supporting children exposed to domestic violence.
