Abstract [sv]

Denna studie undersöker hur individer upplever självpresentation, identitetsskapande och autenticitet på apparna Tinder och Hinge. Genom tidigare forskningsöversikt, teori om identitetsskapande samt självpresentation och kvalitativa intervjuer med användare i åldrarna 24–28 utforskas skapandet av dejtingprofiler och relationsbildning. Resultatet visar att det finns en gemensam strävan efter att skapa autentiska självpresentationer, samtidigt som användare idealiserar deras profiler baserat på yttre påverkan för att uppnå attraktivitet och social acceptans. Användare balanserar mellan detta och uttryck för den personliga identiteten, där vissa delar exkluderas för att anpassa sig till normativa beteenden och egenskaper.  Studien belyser en spänning mellan den autentiska människan och den version som visas digitalt inom onlinedejting. Analys över autenticitetens komplexitet och resultatet visar att apparna i första hand underlättar initiala kontakter snarare än att fungera som mötesplatser för autentiskt uttryck. Resultaten bidrar till en djupare förståelse av hur dejtingappar påverkar identitetsskapande och autenticitet i jakten på meningsfulla relationer. 

Abstract [en]

This study examines how individuals experience self-presentation, identity formation and authenticity on the dating apps Tinder and Hinge. Through a review of previous research, theories on identity formation and self-presentation, and qualitative interviews with users aged 24–28, the creation of dating profiles and the formation of relationships are explored. The results show a shared ambition to create authentic self-presentations, while users at the same time idealize their profiles based on external influences to achieve attractiveness and social acceptance. Users balance this with expressions of personal identity, where certain aspects are excluded to align with normative behaviors and traits.

The study highlights a tension between the authentic self and the version displayed digitally in online dating. An analysis of the complexity of authenticity and the results demonstrate that dating apps primarily assist initial connections rather than serving as platforms for authentic expression. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how dating apps influence identity formation and authenticity in the pursuit of meaningful relationships.
