Abstract [en]
The "Nth Room" case in South Korea, involving severe digital sexual exploitation, highlights the impact of media coverage on gender-based violence. This study applies rape culture and framing theory to analyze how South Korean media narratives about the case have influenced the representation of sexual violence and the portrayal of victims. The analysis revealed that media coverage often sensationalized the case, focusing on graphic and explicit details rather than addressing systemic issues and institutional failures. This sensationalism not only distorted narratives regarding gender-based violence but also exposed deficiencies in the legal and institutional responses to digital sexual exploitation. The media's portrayal of victims was frequently insensitive, contributing to their re-victimization and reinforcing harmful stereotypes. This approach prevented meaningful discussions on necessary systemic reforms and support for survivors.
By applying qualitative thematic and frame analysis, the study illustrated how mediaframing, influenced by rape culture, affects awareness and response to such cases. The findings emphasize the need for responsible and empathetic reporting that supports victims and fosters societal change.
Future research should investigate how similar cases are framed across different cultural contexts and explore audience reactions to these portrayals. Such research can offer insights into how media coverage shapes public perception and institutional accountability, advocating for reforms and improved reporting practices.
