The Conflict From The Jordan River To The Baltic Sea : A Content Analysis of how Israelis and Palestinians are Depicted in the Swedish Media (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to examine how Israelis and Palestinians are depicted in the Swedish press in two different time periods; the first being between the 8th of October 2023 to the 10th of October 2023, and the other period ranging from the March 8th 2024 to March 10th 2024. The articles are analyzed through a comparative discourse-inspired content analysis. Previous research shows that the West tends to portray conflicts between ethnic groups with negative stereotypes. Certain marginalized groups are especially affected by this tendency which can influence how those lives are grieved. This essay investigates 29 articles in total from Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet and Aftonbladet. The theoretical framework of this thesis is basted on Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe's discourse theory, and Judith Butler's theories on grievability. The result of the analysis shows indications of Israeli and Palestinian lives as differentiated in their depictions. The discourse shifted in the other timeframe to instead focus on Palestinian lives' grievability to a greater extent, which was not as apparent in the first timeframe.
