Abstract [en]
The globalisation of media reinforces Western-dominated representations of language. In film, fictional languages are created to differentiate between individuals, cultures, and species. As a result of heightened media attention, these languages have become popular in both media productions and research. Despite being multimodal, constructed languages are predominantly studied from their linguistic aspects. Inclusion of the complex modal arrangements in constructed languages can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of their representation. This thesis recognises the potential of media and communication studies for such a research contribution.
The study employs multimodal critical discourse analysis, underpinned by theories of representation and language imperialism to identify the representation of multispecies communication in three science fiction films. It aims to understand how underlying ideologies influence the representation and the potential impacts on social and cultural hierarchies.
The research indicates that the representation of communication is influenced by dominant Western language ideologies. Human communication is predominantly spoken or written while nonhuman communication is carried out in complex multimodal arrangements. However, they are often adapted and reduced in modalities to accommodate human preferences. Furthermore, nonhuman cultures and languages are often represented using traits from non-western cultures. These representations perpetuate anthropocentric and ethnocentric viewpoints. The implications are that media productions of global reach, naturalises Western ideologies that equate and subordinate non-western and nonhuman cultures.
