Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to understand the users’ perspectives on digital museum collections. Identifying challenges that museums face in terms of digitalisation, in combination with best practices, therefore offers a new understanding of a constantly changing field of study. A thorough review of theory and literature addressing digital museum collections globally ensures that the findings of this study can offer insights beyond Hallands Konstmuseum or the Swedish context.

An interview with Annelie Tuveros, director of exhibitions at Hallands Konstmuseum, provided an insight into the specific challenges and goals the museum hopes to address by developing a digital collection. An online survey was conducted to provide a user-centric perspective on the issue. The insights from the literature, the interview, and the user survey are then integrated under the principle of a mixed-methods approach, providing the basis for the recommendation of solutions. These solutions are developed based on design thinking principles, offering a targeted analysis and approach to addressing the needs of Hallands Konstmuseum’s digital collection development.

The research findings are presented as action proposals, guiding the museum towards a more user-centric development of its collection to increase audience engagement.
