Abstract [en]
This paper investigates how Wattpad has become a transformative influence on the young adult fiction market, which has been reported to disrupt traditional models of publishing by democratising the creation and distribution of content. Wattpad empowers young writers and readers by providing a space in which anyone can publish their or engage in an already published story, thereby challenging the conventional roles that publishers, writers, and readers take or occupy. The premise of this study is on the degree to which Wattpad itself may subvert established power relationships within the YA fiction industry through the underlying provision of direct contact between authors and audiences. Wattpad also allows meritocracy through a participatory culture in which the success of the play of literature depends on the interaction that an author gets from an audience and not through conventional ways of mediated recommendation. It further explores the psychological and social impacts of such online literary contexts in the empowerment of self-efficacy and belongingness for their users. This paper uses theoretical research with support from Participatory Culture Theory, Field Theory, and Network Society Theory to discuss how Wattpad is now reframing the paradigm of what is up ahead within YA fiction, setting up new models for content creation that will heavily influence the new landscape of digital storytelling. Ultimately, the study will teach an understanding of the dynamic relationship between technology, literature, and the publishing industry.
