Abstract [en]

This paper examines the impact of a potential recognition of the indigeneity of the Palestinian Bedouins. Given the noticeable growing recognition of the indigeneity of the Palestinian Bedouins internationally, this paper discusses and analyses the implications and the impact of acknowledging the Bedouins as Indigenous. It further demonstrates how this recognition may, if it sees the light, harness further rights; in particular, Bedouins’ right to return to their homeland, in Al-Naqab-Negev, from where they were forcibly displaced in the early and mid-1950s.This study concludes that formal recognition of the indigeneity of the Palestinian Bedouins entails further rights and protections under international law, including Bedouins’ right to return to Al-Naqab. However, the term indigeneity should be considered cautiously as it also involves problematic implications. The findings produce detailed knowledge about the impact of acknowledging the Bedouins as Indigenous to Palestine in a settler colonial context, considering their refugee status.
