A Qualitative Study on Foreign-born Perceptions of Discrimination in the Labor Market (Engelska)
Abstract [en]
The study aims to investigate the experiences and perceptions that some foreign-born women and men have of the Swedish labor market. Based on a qualitative research method, six interviews were conducted with foreign-born women and men with varying experiences from the labor market in Sweden. This study shows that participating women and men have experienced discrimination in the Swedish labor market, and they believe they have been disadvantaged and treated unfairly, resulting in not being offered the same opportunities as native-born individuals during the hiring processes, despite their qualitifications.
Foreign-born women and men have been subjected to discrimination due to their ethnic background, as well as due to cultural and religious characteristics. They have experienced being mistreated by employers and colleagues, leading them to feel marginalized. The main factor behind this has been their foreign background. They also believe that discrimination is rooted in their foreign, different names and surnames, as well as in their language deficiencies, which have resulted in foreign-born individuals feeling overlooked and excluded by employers and colleagues in the Swedish job market.
