The 2019-2020 pro-democracy Hong Kong protest movement was arguably the biggest global media event of 2019. Complex in terms of the politics and ideologies, as well as the representations of the actors involved in the conflict – the protesters, the police, Hong Kong government and Chinese government – this makes it hard to take a stance towards the protests and understand all the forces at play. With this in mind, this thesis aims to shed light on and deconstruct how news media framed the protests in order to gain a better understanding of which aspects of the story were made more salient to the readers and how that might in turn influence their perception of the protests. News media articles from three different news outlets, both local (Hong Kong) and international (US, UK), are analysed via the method of thematic analysis, with framing theory employed as a lens through which the analysis is done.
