Good Governance inom Svensk Fotboll : En Analys av Hur Klubbar Kan Utvärderas och Förbättra Detta Arbete (Svenska)
Abstract [en]
Several researchers have previously assessed both international and national federations in relation to good governance and its dimensions of transparency, democracy, internal accountability and societal responsibility (see e.g. Geeraert, 2015). However, none have done this on club level, and neither with a focus on Swedish football. The aim of this study has therefore been to assess good governance in Swedish club football. The research questions were as follows: (1) How effective is the modified National Sports Governance Observer in evaluating good governance in Swedish football clubs? And (2) How can Swedish football clubs in M-Allsvenskan improve their work with good governance? By modifying the National Sport Governance Observer (NSGO), the websites of 6 different clubs in M-Allsvenskan (Men’s highest football league in Sweden) have been analysed and evaluated on behalf of 211 indicators which the clubs can fulfil. The results show they collectively received a 40% index score and performed well in relation to transparency whereas internal accountability was the dimension with the lowest score. It is concluded that the NSGO can be modified to assess good governance on club level, however further modifications are needed, especially in relation to the dimension of societal responsibility and the overall methodology. Future research, expanding on this benchmarking tool into other leagues and sports is needed to further assess the reliability and validity. It is also concluded that how the clubs can improve their work with good governance is not only a question about taking action regarding principles where they fail, the clubs are affected by formal institutions that govern them by especially normative and coercive pressure which often, but not always, can lead to the clubs implementing good governance principles. Lastly, it is concluded that in the unique context of M-Allsvenskan, members have the possibility to act, which can help their club in the right direction.
