Abstract [en]

While fear of crime has been a prominent topic of study for decades, most of the research has focusedeither on the characteristics of individuals experiencing fear, or on the characteristics of neighborhoodswhere a high/low share of residents are fearful. Neither of these are very useful from a practitionerperspective, and in recent years focus has shifted towards the specific places people perceive fear andhow to counteract that. We will present findings from multiple studies on the geography of fear inSweden, using both traditional surveys and web-based map applications on samples in severalcities/towns/villages, in some cases comprising random population samples, in other cases convenience

21 | Pagesamples, and in some total school samples of 8th graders to capture youth perceptions. In this results presentation we will highlight the types of places that are perceived as unsafe, the reasonsthey are perceived as unsafe and how this differs – or not - across urban and rural areas, between menand women, and between older and younger individuals. Unsafe places exhibit varying associations tocrime rates and to the demography of residents nearby, and we suggest a typology of unsafe places withpartly different causes for different types of unsafe places.
