Abstract [en]

As environmental pressures, regulatory demands, and stakeholder expectations intensify, ESG reporting has become a central component of sustainability communication for organizations. However, focusing solely on regulatory compliance often leads to technical disclosures that lack strategic stakeholder engagement and do not fully leverage trust-building communication traits. This can limit an enterprise’s ability to build genuine stakeholder trust or demonstrate long-term commitment. This thesis explores how Danish construction enterprises use ESG reporting to foster trust and achieve greater communication maturity. Drawing on frameworks of Six CSR Communication Elements and the Phase Model of Strategic CSR Communication, the study examines how these traits are reflected in ESG reports and how they relate to different levels of maturity in sustainability communication practices.Employing a qualitative, deductive method, the research combines document analysis of four 2024 annual reports with twelve semi-structured interviews involving both internal and external stakeholders. The analysis indicates that personal trust-building communication traits (consistency, objectivity, and informativeness) are systematically communicated, particularly in environmental data and KPI tracking. In contrast, relational trust-building communication traits (transparency, a less promotional tone, and personal relevance) are less prevalent and often lack explicit references to stakeholder perspectives or two-way engagement, indicating a need for more strategic stakeholder engagement. The findings suggest that communication maturity is most developed in the foundational layer of sustainability communication practices, such as internal alignment and stakeholder mapping, while participatory planning, audience-specific messaging, and feedback integration, key aspects of strategic stakeholder engagement, remain underdeveloped. The study concludes that while trust-building traits enhance perceived credibility, fully mature sustainability communication requires deeper stakeholder participation and reflexive engagement.By applying a dual-framework analysis, this thesis offers sector-specific insights into trust and maturity in ESG reporting and underscores the importance of integrating trust-building traits and strategic stakeholder engagement to advance sustainability communication in construction.
