Resting in preschool : A study of the challenge of changing the structure of rest in preschool based on children´s perspective (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of our study is, through activities, observations, interviews and reflections toinvestigate how two different groups of children in different ages as well as the educators ineach department, relate to and experience an active yoga and massage rest as an alternative toa traditional resting. We chose to base our study in the scientific and theoretical perspective of ritual andritualization perspective (Persson, 2012) that allow us to gather a view of children's socialinteraction and to understand how they socialize during the resting, and how they interpretdifferent rest techniques like yoga and massage. Based on Pramling Samuelsson, Sommer &Hundeide (2011) and Pramling Samuelsson & Jonsson (2017) child's perspective we analyzeour data to understand the children's experiences and surroundings through the educator’sinterpretation. As a result the study shows that when the educator offers children alternatives routines andactivities for rest there is an opportunity for movement while the children themselves are cocreators of rest. A place is created where the children's individual needs for rest areencountered in a more appropriate way. Children have the need to move constantly, with thehelp of an activity, such as yoga or massage, that allows the body to be in movement. Thechildren are given tools to manage their relaxation in a way they can develop in the meantime.By introducing yoga and massage as resting alternatives, the children become more involvedand active. The educators also noticed the children's joy in coping with elements of theactivity, and that several children appreciated yoga and massage experiences as nice and fun.
