Abstract [en]
This study has examined the effect of sharing physical space on the interactions
between the majority and the minority. It is a case study of the change of location of the
language introduction program in Landskrona to the main building of the national high
school students in 2019. The study utilized the qualitative method, conducting one semi-
structured expert interview and seven in-depth semi-structured interviews with students
graduating high school in 2020. The selection of participants was made up of students
experiencing the environment at the high school before and after the language introduction
program moved in. The study showed indications of a multicultural environment in which
the move-in of the language introduction program was not acknowledged by the majority
group of the school. Constrict theory was used to explain that the school consisted of
groups divided by ethnicity, which explained the fact that they did not know about the
program moving into their building. Sharing physical space did not seem to have a major
effect on the interactions between the majority and the minority group. Sharing physical
space contributed to an increase in bonding social capital; however, there are no indications
of a rise in bridging social capital between the national high schoolers and the language
introduction program.
