The Evolutionary World Designer is a two-year project that will design and develop a novel interactive system for Artificial Intelligence assisted game design. Game designers will use this system when creating and producing virtual environments for videogames, such as worlds, levels, and maps.
The system inputs the designer’s initial ideas of the final environment to be produced. An Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm, a search-based procedural content generator, processes this input and outputs suggestions and improvements to that initial concept, providing immediate and constant feedback to the game designer. The final output is a completely developed and populated playable map, commonly known as game world, which can be later exported for its use in compatible adventure games.
The Evolutionary World Designer bases its technology on related research published in scientific international conferences and journals on the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Computational Intelligence, and Game Studies. This project builds on preliminary results from an initial prototype, already published on the International Conference on Bio-inspired Computation Evostar 2016.
The project aims for both industrial and scientific impact, in the form of a system that can be used for game designers to produce content for adventure games, as well as publishable research results on Computational Creativity and Artificial Intelligence.
