Abstract [en]

This study examines how Swedish history teachers integrate digital technology in their teaching. The study answers questions about which historical competencies are made visible, what digital technologies are used, and whether digital technology interacts with instructional methods. The study builds on classroom observations of six history teachers selected for their reported extensive use of digital technology. The empirical material has been analysed using the TPACK framework and history didactic theory, where historical thinking and narrative competence are central concepts. Based on classroom observations, findings show that teaching is dominated by traditional methods, such as lectures, which primarily emphasise the transmission of historical facts while giving limited attention to analytical and reflective skills. Digital technology is largely used to reinforce existing teaching practices rather than to transform history teaching. It does not appear to support the development of historical thinking competencies or narrative competence. Results suggest that digitalisation has not led to significant methodological or theoretical innovation in history teaching.

Abstract [en]

This doctoral thesis examines history teachers’ professional practice, focusing on the content and teaching methods, as well as teachers’ use of technology. The primary aim of the thesis is to explore the relationship between the digitalisation of schools and the practice of history teaching, with a special attention to teaching methods, teachers’ perceptions of teaching, and the extent to which digital technology contributes to challenge or transform history teaching.

This thesis takes its starting point in the digitalisation of Swedish schools that began in the early 2010s. This period was characterised by the extensive expansion of digital infrastructure in schools, with “one-to-one” projects playing a significant role in the process. The driving forces behind the digitalisation were based on far-reaching technological optimism and were largely ideological or economic in nature, and digitalisation was presented as the solution to the challenges of the present and the future for both schools and pupils.

This thesis examines contemporary history teaching through three sub-studies: a large-scale survey; an observational study; and an interview study. Teachers’ practices are analysed using a revised TPACK model and theoretical perspectives from history didactics, in which concepts such as historical consciousness and historical thinking are key concepts. Together, these form the basis for an overarching conclusion regarding how digital technology functions in relation to history teachers’ teaching practices.

The conclusions of the thesis show that history teaching is characterised by a notable stability, with a lecture-based approach and the transmission of factual knowledge dominating, whilst subject-specific and orientational forms of knowledge are given limited attention. Despite an extensive digital infrastructure, technology has not contributed in any significant way to a transformation of teaching but has rather preserved existing methods by primarily serving as an administrative and communicative support.

The lack of subject-specific digital tools and relevant professional development in teaching methods means that technology’s potential to develop pupils’ historical thinking remains unrealised. At the same time, a homogeneity is emerging in the content and forms of teaching, where socio-economic and geographical differences have only a limited impact on teaching practices. This conformity risks disadvantage students with limited support at home and poses both a pedagogical and a democratic challenge.

Five theoretical explanations are offered for the lack of change in history teaching: the subject’s tradition of focusing on facts and the lack of subject-specific teacher training limit its development; the ideological and organisational motives behind digitalisation have prioritised economics over pedagogy; teachers’ epistemological beliefs tend to preserve existing teaching practices; the institutional inertia of schools acts as a barrier to rapid development; and functional fixation prevents innovative use of available technology. Together, these factors contribute to limiting digitalisation to administrative forms rather than contributing to pedagogical development.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Historical knowledge, along with knowledge acquired in other subjects, is crucial for individuals to make sense of and engage with the world around them. Evidence suggests that educational systems fail to adequately support disadvantaged groups in accessing the knowledge conveyed through education. This article presents a study comparing the historical knowledge of students attending lower-secondary schools in varying socio-economic environments. Using regression analysis and concept analysis, we examine responses (n=100) to both selected-and constructed-response items from the Swedish national test in history. The sampled items address factual, conceptual, and procedural knowledge types, and the results indicate consistent differences between students from low SES and high SES schools across all types of knowledge. Findings also show that socio-economic status has a larger explanatory value than gender or mother tongue. The differences regarding historical knowledge are discussed in relation to Biesta’s three dimensions of education, providing a philosophical perspective on the broader implications of these disparities in educational success.

Abstract [en]

This paper presents results from a large-scale study of history teachers in Swedish secondary schools. The study examines perceptions of history, content being taught, teaching methods and use of digital technology. The study uses the Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework to analyse the results together with narrative theory.

The main results indicate that knowledge of the past and contemporary perspectives from a canonical tradition are prioritised, together with a content-based lecture-style pedagogy. The use of digital technology does not seem to challenge methods or bring new perspectives to history teaching. However, to fully understand history teaching with technology, a framework that emphasises all parts of history education is needed. This calls for further development of the TPACK model, which is further discussed in this article.

Abstract [sv]

Under höstterminen 2023 genomfördes avhandlingens första delstudie.
