Abstract [en]

This article examines the Mapuche people’s slow resistance in Argentina, focusing on practices of (re)signification of settler–colonial narratives, through the politics of present-making (making one’s presence felt). In response to recent legislative efforts to delegitimise Mapuche identity and land rights, and historical processes of absencing the Mapuche, the paper argues that resistance here is not just immediate confrontation, but a sustained and strategic process over time. This resistance is rooted in memory, territory and identity through a maintained inscription in the land. By rejecting both the state’s de-recognition of Indigenous people and the selective recognition of the indio permitido, Mapuche activists assert a radical politics of re-knowledge, linking land and identity through emic narratives. This resistance is slow as processes of (re)signification build on a constructive repetition of signs over time.

Abstract [en]

Power and Resistance Unscrambled” explores the relationship between power and resistance, moving beyond the common view that resistance is merely a reaction to power. The chapter begins by examining the evolution of power theories, highlighting the shift from tangible forms of power, such as military might, to more nuanced forms like social and symbolic power. Thereafter, the chapter enriches the scholarly debate on power and resistance by, among other things, examining how resistance itself generates power, how resistance is inherently compromised by power, and how resistance can sometimes support and comfort power. The chapter concludes that social science scholars should broaden their view of how power and resistance interplay or even overlap, and that resistance both challenges, supports, and creates power.

Abstract [en]

The pursuit of truth is of crucial importance in environmentalism. How can we establish shared realities that encompass biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollutions that disrupt essential ecosystems? Taking signs and repetitions as a point of departure, Eva Lilja and Mona Lilja suggest a range of basic communicative practices that could be the foundation of a semiotics of sustainability. Their book aims for an in-depth exploration of eco-strategies and expands on how we could – perhaps even should – communicate sustainability issues. Homing in on problems related to communication, Making Truthprobes into the role of signs, the importance of reality effects, repetitions, scripts, emotions, and strategies of (de)politicization.

Abstract [en]

Resistance is often depicted as events that are active, adversarial and antagonistic. However, we would like to suggest that it could also be understood through other narratives, which connect political pursuits to passivity rather than activity. These stories can contribute to increasing our awareness of the limits of the resistance scholarship and extend the view of political performances. In this paper, two different trajectories of counter-conduct - the anti-sexual assault movement in Japan, and the anti-authoritarian struggles in Cambodia - will be used to reveal how resistance is sometimes delegated or outsourced, rather than actively pursued by the subject. In these cases, the political subjects' passivity feeds political activities, but, on the other side of the coin, the activities also foster passivity.

Abstract [en]

The study of resistance has exploded during recent years and the field has broadened in order to accommodate more issues. The broadened scope of resistance studies is fruitful, yet the embracing of resistance’s complex character has led to a situation where the current research on resistance does not offer the appropriate tools to analyze the multiple and often overlapping forms of resistance. It is in this scholarly context that this paper form a bridge between fields in its endeavor to illuminate the richness of ‘resistance’, while still providing tools – for example, definitions, paths and forms of resistance – for analyzing it.
