Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the potential and challenges of utilizing filmmaking in educational settings to foster agency, promote active citizenship, and empower young people to engage in social action. Drawing on activity theory, which emphasizes the dynamic interplay between individuals, social context, and cultural artifacts, the study examines filmmaking projects within social studies in an upper secondary school in Sweden. The concept of expansive learning is employed to illustrate how such projects can transcend traditional subject matter knowledge, fostering agency and engagement in social actions. Based on a thematic analysis of interviews with five students and two teachers, findings reveal that filmmaking encourages active engagement with social studies topics. Students are required to research, analyze, and interpret societal issues beyond the classroom, transforming them from passive information consumers to active participants in the learning process. This hands-on exploration and creative expression have the potential of helping students construct a deeper understanding of complex social studies concepts. However, the study also identifies significant challenges in film production, including the need for both media literacy and technical competencies to effectively explore and represent subject content. An activity theoretical model was used to visualize and make these challenges tangible.

Detta kapitel diskuterar spänningen mellan teori och praktik i högre utbildning med fokus på medieproduktion, med särskild utgångspunkt i kandidatprogrammet Visuell kommunikation vid Malmö universitet. Genom att använda Kulturhistorisk aktivitetsteori (CHAT) samt begreppen boundary crossing och boundary objects analyseras hur akademiska och professionella praktiker möts i studenternas examensarbeten, där både en skriftlig uppsats och en egen medieproduktion ingår. Medieproduktion i en akademisk kontext kan förstås som två interagerande aktivitetssystem, det akademiska och det professionella, som delar objektet kunskapsproduktion men präglas av olika regler, verktyg och diskurser. Kapitlet introducerar en trianguleringsmodell där teoretiska referenser, produktionsreferenser och den egna produktionen fungerar som boundary objects och därigenom skapar ingångar till en integrerad praktik. Genom konkreta exempel på studentarbeten diskuteras hur dessa verktyg kan användas för att överbrygga gränser mellan akademisk analys och praktisk gestaltning. Kapitlet argumenterar för att en sådan didaktisk design kan underlätta studenternas rörelse mellan olika sociala praktiker och bidra till ett fördjupat lärande där teori och praktik inte ses som motsatser utan som ömsesidigt berikande delar av medieproduktion i högre utbildning.

Abstract [en]

This presentation is reporting on an international collaboration using film production to produce and share knowledge on ocean literacy in upper secondary school and how the results are used in an ongoing Swedish project in social studies. In a Swedish context, the notion of aesthetic learning processes has been used to explain and promote media production as a valuable tool for exploring and producing both subject knowledge and media literacy, but engaging in aesthetic learning processes entails a degree of risk and it´s important to consider the complexity of media production when used to explore and communicate subject matter content. The project is using an activity theoretical model to map tensions and challenges between technology, media literacy and subject matter in the use of film production as a form of teaching and learning.

Abstract [sv]

Denna antologi erbjuder forskningsbaserade och didaktiska perspektiv på religion och samhällsförändringar. Antologin är resultatet av ett samarbete mellan forskare från flera olika discipliner vid Malmö universitet och visar på den mångfald av forskningsperspektiv som ryms inom ämnesområdet religionsvetenskap i Sverige idag.

Antologin vänder sig till studenter och verksamma lärare samt en vidare intresserad läsekrets som önskar få tillgång till aktuell forskning och fördjupa sin ämnesteoretiska kunskap. Genom fyra teman belyses aktuella perspektiv på brännande frågor inom samtida religionsvetenskaplig forskning: Religion, kön och sexualitet, Religion, unga och skola, Religion, möten och förändringar samt Religion, politik och samtid.

I en samtid som präglas av ständigt pågående förändring är religion och livsåskådningsfrågor synnerligen aktuella. Mötet mellan historiska traditioner och nutida samhällsutveckling visar hur inte bara religiösa rörelser, utan också människors trosuppfattningar och identiteter, omtolkas och förändras över tid. Undervisningen i religionskunskap i grund- och gymnasieskolan utgår från att kunskap om religion och andra livsåskådningar är central för vår förståelse av en omvärld som i allt större utsträckning präglas av mångfald och förändring.

Abstract [en]

Drawing from experiences of a European collaboration on Ocean literacy using video production for learning and representation, this paper proposes an activity theoretical approach to the curricular design. Using a model for different levels of operations, actions and activity, it highlights media literacy as being a key factor for success. Video production is a complex form of multimodal communication and media literacy was perceived as an underplayed aspect when connecting subject matters to media production and the skills required to achieve good results in the project. There is no clear boundary between the different levels and in the European collaboration, actions towards all intermediate objects were in motion simultaneously, which caused frustration and backlashes. The theoretical model made these different levels visible and tangible and enabled an analysis of professional development needs and to make the necessary connections between technology, media literacy and subject matter content.

Digitaliseringen av skolan och nya krav på mediekunskap, kreativitet, entreprenörskap, samarbete och problembaserad undervisning skapar utmaningar kring hur lärande och undervisning ska organiseras och genomföras. Den didaktiska utmaningen för religionslärare ligger inte bara i att ha kunskap och insikt om olika mediers betydelser, utan även om hur designen av lärande för elever ger utrymme för skapande och problematiserande av medietexter och deras innehåll. Men dessa utmaningar erbjuder också möjligheter att bedriva en religionsundervisning där eleverna utgår från och undersöker religiösa fenomen och livsåskådningsfrågor i verkligheten utanför klassrummet. Detta kan stimulera ett lärande som väcker viktiga frågor och utmanar förenklade och stereotypa perspektiv.

I det här kapitlet vill jag lyfta att videoproduktion som etnografisk metod för elever i religionskunskap stämmer väl överens med religionsdidaktiska perspektiv och ämnets centrala innehåll. Med utgångspunkt från mitt eget avhandlingsarbete presenteras även en modell som kan synliggöra utmaningar och kompetensutvecklingsbehov för både lärare och elever.

Abstract [en]

Innovative designs for learning have implications for the teaching practices and the system in which they are created, often with conflicting motives and tensions on systemic levels. Co-design processes with teachers and researchers require tools and concepts to grasp this complexity and to create durable changes. In the case studied in this article, activity theory and change laboratory methodologies were used in a participatory design process with a small group of teachers. Five key characteristics of the epistemological principles behind the change laboratory methodology were identified and analysed. The theoretical framework enabled tools for a collective analysis of the origin and development of systemic contradictions as well as a model to envision future practices and concrete learning designs. Findings suggest that the combination of participatory design and change laboratory methodologies can serve as a vehicle for expansive learning and new innovative learning designs in educational settings.
