Abstract [en]

In this theoretical paper, it is argued that developing students’ curiosity is a crucial way in which higher education can contribute to the preservation and advancement of liberal democracy. This argument is developed through two theoretical frameworks: Perry Zurn’s analysis of the politics of curiosity and Bruno Latour’s understanding of liberal democracy as a process of negotiation between openness and closedness. As part of his description of liberal democracy, Latour maintains that any well-functioning liberal democracy is sustained through the agency of four public actors: the politician, the scientist, the administrator, and the moralist. The last three roles, which should be understood as ideal types, correspond to three forms of curiosity highlighted by Zurn: epistemic, hegemonic, and resistant curiosity. Consequently, the paper posits that higher education institutions can play a pivotal role in the preservation and development of liberal democracy by promoting all three forms of curiosity. By doing so, higher education institutions will support the preservation of the public roles identified by Latour, as each role is shaped and maintained by different forms of curiosity. Finally, the paper invites the reader to critically reflect on what forms of higher education that higher education should promote and nurture in their students.

Abstract [en]

This theoretical and exploratory article analyzes and critically examines the recurrent argument that equates consumption with religious practice. According to an argument offered mainly by theologians, consumerism is a form of 'ersatz' religion, thus serving as a competitor to the Church. As a starting-point for the exposition of this argument, this article examines the shopping mall as a sacred space by highlighting the theoretical work of Mircea Eliade and by arguing that consumerism is the religion practiced at the shopping mall. Although theologians have good reason to understand the shopping mall as a sacred space and consumerism as a religion, this article challenges their assertion through a reading mainly of the work by William Cavanaugh who argues that consumerism does not facilitate the pursuit of a telos. As this is a prerequisite for a religion to be considered as such, this article argues that consumerism should not be regarded as a religion and that the shopping mall should therefore not be considered as a sacred space. Finally, the consumerism of contemporary movements that are operating in the 'spiritual marketplace' is discussed. In particular, the article argues that too much focus on these movements risks obscuring the way other religions embrace consumerist logic.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The starting point for this theoretical and argumentative article is the perception that religious literacy entails developing the student’s knowledge about and ability to confront their religious and non-religious other. Religious literacy is thus understood as a necessary part of the students’ democratic agency. By critically examining the teaching of controversial issues as a means of confronting religious difference, this article argues that teaching controversial issues is an essential part of RE. At the same time, using controversial issues in RE brings its own didactic challenges that risk working against the ambition to develop students’ religious literacy. The article thus highlights a paradox of controversy: while teaching controversial issues is necessary, teachers in RE probably should not do it.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Syftet med denna text är därför att ge en inblick i den filosofi som denna «jazzman in the world of ideas, and bluesman in the life of the mind» utformat.
