    Abstract [en]

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine how social workers within the substance abuse field view the use of manual-based assessment of risk and protective factors of young adults struggling with substance abuse. The purpose is also to examine how social workers within this field reason about risk and protective factors of young adults struggling with substance abuse. This study is grounded on a critical theory framework which is used to analyse the findings. The method used in this study is semistructured interviews with seven social workers that work in the substance abuse field in Sweden. The results showed that the professionals highlighted positive aspects such as high accuracy and increased legitimacy when it comes to the use of manual-based assessments. Negative aspects were decreased focus on the relational aspect and decreased professional autonomy in their daily work. The result also showed that professionals reasoned that risk-factors such as: adverse childhood experiences, substance abuse within the family, criminality, mental illness can be linked to the development of substance abuse among young adults. Conversely the professionals reason that the opposite factors could be understood as protective factors. This study argues that the manual-based assessment of risk and protective factors need to be adapted to the client and their unique circumstances. The reasoning of risk- and protective factors and assessment needs to be more focused on the organizational aspects of social work, as well as structural aspects of social injustice.

Från dilemma till praktik: en kvalitativ studie om etikarbetet bland socialarbetare inom missbruksvård2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine the ethical dilemmas that social workers face in their daily practice with individuals experiencing substance abuse problems. As well to analyze how these dilemmas are managed in practice based on social workers’ lived experiences.

In order to further analyze these purposes Sarah Bank’s theoretical framework of “ethics work” was used.

In doing so, a qualitative research method with semi-structured interviews was conducted with eight social workers practicing within the field of substance abuse treatment from four different units in southern Sweden. The gathered data was then analyzed through a thematic analysis and three themes were formed: Room for maneuver based on guidelines and laws,

Motivational work and Cooperation. The results revealed ethical dilemmas concerning the balance between client autonomy and professional responsibility, confidentiality, lack of motivation, and insufficient inter-organizational cooperation. Furthermore, the participants emphasized the importance of professional discretion to act in clients best interests, the importance of building trusting relationships through motivational dialogue, as well as the value of peer support in managing ethical dilemmas.

The results were analyzed using Sarah Bank’s theory of ethics work to offer a practical understanding of how ethics are enacted in the participating social workers' everyday practice. The dimensions of framing work, role work, emotion work, reason work, and relationship work were used to further conceptualize the participants' experiences of ethical dilemmas and ways in which these dilemmas can be managed. Furthermore, the analysis was complemented with previous research to situate the findings within a broader context.

    Abstract [en]

Compulsory care of children is a central intervention when home environments are harmful for the child, yet its impact on the child’s mental health remains complex. The research indicates that removal from the family can also contribute to negative mental health outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine how compulsory care affects children’s mental health, with particular focus on both positive and negative psychological outcomes. This is a literature study based on peer-reviewed scientific articles. The selected material was analysed using thematic analysis. The results indicate that compulsory care can improve children’s psychological health with adequate and stable support. However, it can also contribute trauma, emotional distress and have a negative affect on children’s attachment. The results highlights the importance of stability, continuity and safety to enhance children’s mental health during out-of-home placement. Compulsory care may function as both a protective intervention and a psychological burden for the child.

Det osynliga våldet i en heteronormativ diskurs: En litteraturstudie om våld i HBTQ-relationer2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Domestic violence is a serious and dangerous societal problem that can mean lifethreatening consequences for its victims. Traditionally it is a subject that has been viewed from the perspective of the heterosexual relationship. Less is known about the domestic violence affecting the LGBTQ-community. The scarce science on the subject shows that this group can be at a particularly high risk for victimization. Social workers play an important role in identifying, preventing and protecting victims of domestic violence regardless of gender and sexuality. Yet science shows that this work can be significantly limited by the heteronormative discourse where it takes place. The aim of this literature study is there by to try to fill the gaps of knowledge, providing future social workers with a better understanding of the experiences and needs of LGBTQ people experiencing domestic violence in a romantic partnership, as well as to provide tools for more inclusive social work practices. The findings of this study shows that heteronormative structures makes it harder for LGBTQ people as well as serviceproviders to identify risk and victimization of violence. The heterosexualized societal view of the problem as well as gendered beliefs about violence makes it harder for the LGBTQ community to be recognized as legitimate victims of violence. The group's minority status also poses challenges such as; isolation, fears related to help seeking and the heightened risk of discrimination. The findings of this study shows a great need for more inclusive social work; challenging the gender binary and the heterosexual views of domestic violence.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this text is to examine what research says about how teachers can work with interculturality in art education. By analyzing research studies and highlighting practical methods for teachers, the text aims to create a more inclusive and multicultural learning environment. This also aligns with the curriculum guidelines on combating racism and promoting intercultural perspectives, which emphasize the importance of developing knowledge, skills, and attitudes to strengthen understanding of other cultures and foster a critical approach to one's own prejudices.

To address my research question, I organized the selected studies into three analytical themes, each illustrating a different way in which visual and education can support intercultural learning.

The first theme, Art Education as a Platform for Cultural Dialogue, highlights how visual art allows students to express and share their cultural experiences, crafting opportunities for dialogue, empathy and deep understanding of diversity. The second theme, Aesthetic Expression as a Tool for Intercultural Learning, shows how artistic practices such as exploring cultural symbols, identities and narratives can help students recognize similarities and differences between cultures while also addressing challenges such as stereotypes and cultural appropriation. The third theme, The Role of Art Education in Promoting Critical Thinking and Intercultural Awareness,  demonstrates how analysing images, films, and visual symbols enable students to question their own assumptions, reflect on societal norms, and develop a more nuanced understanding of interculturality.

Together, these themes show that visual art education provides a powerful framework for exploring culture, fostering dialogue, and strengthening students' intercultural competence.

    Abstract [en]

In a mapping conducted by the National Board of Health and Welfare, a clear problem regarding stability in foster care placements emerges, where more than half of the 94, 000 placed children included in the study had experienced more than one placement. This indicates that placement breakdowns are a common phenomenon and something that needs to be studied in order to identify the underlying causes and thus be able to counteract them. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine which aspects social workers within foster care services consider to contribute to a stable foster care placement, based on their experiences and perspectives. The methods used in the study consisted of semi-structured qualitative interviews with four social workers responsible for the foster family and four social workers responsible for the child, where the collected material was analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the study showed that the impact on stability is multifactorial and therefore cannot be explained by individual aspects alone. As the social workers described influencing factors at different levels, the results were presented using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, at the micro-, meso-, exo-, and macro-levels. The most prominent influencing factors in the social workers’ accounts were the characteristics of the foster family, attention to the child’s needs, and good collaboration within the three-part parenthood. The conclusion of this study may contribute to increased knowledge regardníng efforts to create stable foster care placements.

Att fostra demokratiska medborgare: demokratisk kompetens genom historieundervisning2026Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish school has the aim to foster democratic citizens. It is of importance to understand how democracy can be understood in the context of school and how history education could be organised to achieve this goal. This overview aims to summarize the results of studies researching how to educate students to be democratic citizens through history education by answering the following questions:

    1. What does research say about how the concept of democracy could be understood in the context of Swedish history didactics in theory and practice?

    2. What does international research say about which methods could be used to promote democratic competence in history education and what would that look like in practice?

Material was found using four main research engines: Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), Education Research Complete (ERC), Google Scholar and SwePub. Additional material was found by searching in the reference lists of relevant sources found. Malmö University’s database Libsearch was used to find physical books in the library.

Results show that there are two main perspectives to understand democracy in a Swedish didactic context: disruptive democracy and developmental democracy. These two perspectives could be understood as teaching for democracy or teaching through democracy and reflect how the syllabus for history and the Swedish curriculum use the concept of democracy. Furthermore, results describe two main methods for education that will promote democratic competence which are called deliberative pedagogy and critical pedagogy. We conclude that these two methods correlate with the two perspectives on democracy found in the Swedish curriculum and syllabus. Teaching competences needed in a disruptive democracy could be done through critical pedagogy and is the main perspective seen in the syllabus for history. Teaching competences desired in a developmental democracy could be done through deliberative pedagogy and is the main perspective in the overarching Swedish  curriculum. Both methods could be used to meet the aim of fostering democratic citizens.

    Abstract [en]

In recent years, Sweden has developed an extensive legal and policy framework aimed at preventing and addressing honor-based violence and oppression. This includes the criminalization of key offenses, the implementation of national strategies, and strengthened political measures. In addition to national initiatives, Sweden adheres to several international commitments in this area. The social services hold a particular responsibility for protection, risk assessment, and case management in honor-based cases, supported by specialized assessment tools. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview and synthesis of Swedish research on how women and girls exposed to honor-based violence and oppression experience the violence and the consequences it entails for their life situations. The study also aims to examine how societal support, particularly the interventions and practices of the social services, is perceived, together with social workers’ accounts of their professional roles and the challenges arising in case handling related to honor-based violence. To address the study’s research questions, a scoping review methodology was employed, enabling a systematic overview of existing research within the field. The findings indicate that exposure is frequently characterized by extensive control as well as physical, psychological, and sexual violence, where honor norms related to chastity, sexuality, and virginity function as central mechanisms of oppression. Such violence severely restricts agency and has far-reaching consequences for mental health, self-image, and opportunities for independence. Furthermore, while various forms of protection and support are available, women’s and girls’ experiences of these interventions vary considerably. Recurrent barriers include lack of trust, insufficient individualization of support measures, and limited understanding of the complexity of honor-based contexts. Overall, the study highlights the need for enhanced professional competence, strengthened inter-agency collaboration, and more context-sensitive approaches in order to effectively prevent and respond to honor-related violence and oppression.

    Abstract [en]

Mandatory reporting of child welfare concerns is a central but complex task within school social work. This qualitative study examines school counsellors’ experiences of handling mandatory reporting to child welfare services and how this responsibility affects their professional practice. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five school counsellors in compulsory schools in one Swedish municipality and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings show that school counsellors play an important advisory role in supporting school staff when uncertainty or resistance to reporting arises, while simultaneously managing tensions between legal obligations, professional discretion, and trust-based relationships with pupils and guardians. Mandatory reporting is shown to influence counsellors’ professional role by positioning them between support and control, often involving emotional strain and conflict. The study is analysed using perspectives from street-level bureaucracy and theory of professions, highlighting the significance of discretion, legitimacy, and organisational conditions in school social work.

    Abstract [en]

Abstract This study aims to explore how social workers working in women’s shelters describe their approaches and strategies in meetings with women exposed to intimate partner violence. The study also focuses on the challenges and difficulties social workers encounter in their work, as well as the organizational and structural conditions that shape their professional practice. The study is based on qualitative, semi-structured interviews with social workers employed at women’s shelters. The findings show that social workers emphasize the importance of creating safety, trust and a non-judgemental alliance through validation, emotional presence and flexibility. Central strategies include identifying and validating violence, relieving women from self-blame, psychoeducation and supporting women’s autonomy throughout the support process. At the same time, the results highlight significant challenges related to emotional strain, women’s ambivalence, post-separation violence and difficulties in balancing support with safety concerns, particularly when children are involved. The study also identifies structural obstacles such as limited resources, insecure funding, lack of housing options, limited access to trauma-focused care and system conflicts between different authorities. Social workers describe how system clashes and weak cooperation can undermine women’s safety and restrict their own professional room for manoeuvre. The conclusion of the study is that social workers in women’s shelters operate within complex emotional and structural conditions that place high demands on individual practitioners. To ensure sustainable and high-quality support for women exposed to intimate partner violence, there is a need for improved organizational conditions, clearer collaboration structures and stronger institutional support for social workers.

    Abstract [en]

The showing of historical film in classrooms is a common practice, yet it presents both

significant pedagogical opportunities and substantial didactic challenges. Showing film can be

a complex and difficult matter without the right didactical skillset, and therefore the teacher

needs historical film literacy. Feature films are frequently used to mediate historical empathy

and to create an interest with students but often the didactical goals fall short without a clear

purpose. The purpose of this study is to examine what research identifies for the use of feature

films as a didactic resource in history education, as well as the challenges teachers may

encounter when implementing them in the classroom. Based on this purpose, the following

    research question has been formulated:

What purposes does research identify for the use of feature films in history education, and

    what challenges may teachers face?

This study is based on a systematic literature review of nine selected peer-reviewed sources

within history education. The findings indicate that feature films can support students'

engagement, historical empathy and historical consciousness in history education, but also

present challenges related to time constraints, historical inaccuracies, and students' critical

understanding of film as a historical source. The result shows that a high level of historical

film literacy is required among teachers. Future research could focus on how historical film

literacy can be developed and strengthened among teachers and students in history education.

En förbättrad elevhälsa?: - en systematisk litteraturöversikt.2026Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Teori

    Abstract [en]

French is one of the modern languages that some students perceive as particularly challenging, while others choose to study the language despite its perceived difficulties. Against this background, the aim of this study is to examine the underlying motivational factors that influence upper secondary school students’ learning of French. The focus lies on the relationship between students’ motivation, their self-efficacy beliefs, and their learning strategies, as well as their interpretations of their performance and results, regardless of whether these performances are perceived as successful or unsuccessful.

The study was conducted using a qualitative method, in which four upper secondary school students studying French 4 at a municipal school in Sweden were interviewed. The results indicate that both intrinsic motivation and autonomous extrinsic motivation are the most significant forms of motivation for students’ language learning. Furthermore, the findings show that there is a positive and reciprocal relationship between these motivational forms and students’ self-efficacy beliefs.

In addition, the study demonstrates that students’ interpretations of their performance, when based on internal and controllable causes—such as their own effort—have a positive impact on both motivation and self-efficacy. Finally, the results show that all participants employ strategies for effective learning, which correlates with a high level of self-efficacy.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis presents a narrative literature review examining research on linguistic variation, cultural representation, and intercultural communicative competence in Spanish language teaching, with particular relevance for Swedish upper secondary education. Drawing on eleven studies from the USA, Europe, and Latin America, and informed by theories of pan-Hispanism and intercultural communicative competence, the analysis identifies a shift from monocentric, Eurocentric models of Spanish toward inclusive and pluricentric understandings of language and culture.

Despite this shift, the reviewed research shows that hierarchical norms persist in teaching practice, often devaluing non-European varieties and portraying Spanish-speaking regions outside Spain in limited or stereotypical ways. These patterns are reproduced at structural levels, notably through textbooks and teacher education.

The study highlights the need for structural change alongside pedagogical development, emphasizing the role of teacher education and teaching materials in supporting inclusive practices. Didactic implications include the use of authentic materials, explicit attention to linguistic and cultural variation, dialogic and contrastive approaches, and strategies that treat students' linguistic and cultural diversity as an asset. By relating international research to the Swedish school context, the thesis demonstrates how Spanish language teaching can promote linguistic variation awareness, intercultural communicative competence, a global perspective, and democratic values in education, thereby supporting student motivation, meaningful language use, and lifelong learning.

Gruppstorlekens påverkan på barns utveckling, lärande och individuella stöd: En litteraturöversikt2026Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Why differences in national test results are critical beyond the grades: Historical knowledge as (un)equally distributed prerequisites for societal participation2026In: Nordidactica. Journal of Humanities and Social Science Education, ISSN 2000-9879, Vol. 15, no 2025:2, p. 50-72Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Historical knowledge, along with knowledge acquired in other subjects, is crucial for individuals to make sense of and engage with the world around them. Evidence suggests that educational systems fail to adequately support disadvantaged groups in accessing the knowledge conveyed through education. This article presents a study comparing the historical knowledge of students attending lower-secondary schools in varying socio-economic environments. Using regression analysis and concept analysis, we examine responses (n=100) to both selected-and constructed-response items from the Swedish national test in history. The sampled items address factual, conceptual, and procedural knowledge types, and the results indicate consistent differences between students from low SES and high SES schools across all types of knowledge. Findings also show that socio-economic status has a larger explanatory value than gender or mother tongue. The differences regarding historical knowledge are discussed in relation to Biesta’s three dimensions of education, providing a philosophical perspective on the broader implications of these disparities in educational success.

    Abstract [sv]

Nordiska Rhizom utgör den första volymen i skriftserien Lines of Flight — Transdisciplinary Studies in Art, Culture & Learning.

Kvinnors upplevelser av sexuell hälsa efter bröstcancerbehandling: En litteraturstudie2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Advances in diagnostics and treatment have led to increased survival, making the long-term consequences of treatment increasingly important to address. Sexual health is a vital aspect of women’s well-being and quality of life, yet it remains insufficiently acknowledged in cancer care.

Aim: The aim of this literature study was to explore women’s experiences of sexual health following breast cancer treatment.

Method: A literature study with a qualitative approach was conducted. Database searches were performed in CINAHL and PubMed. Ten scientific articles with qualitative designs were included and analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

Results: The analysis identified three main themes: altered libido, identity and relationships, and the importance of communication. Women’s sexual health was affected by treatment-induced menopause, pain, and fatigue, often leading to reduced sexual desire. Changes in body image and sociocultural norms influenced identity and relationships, and many women experienced a sense of obligation toward their partner. Insufficient information and support from healthcare professionals, as well as inadequate communication with partners, emerged as significant barriers to sexual health.

Conclusion: Women’s experiences of sexual health after breast cancer treatment are complex and multidimensional. The findings highlight the need for person-centered care in which sexual health is integrated as a natural part of follow-up and support in cancer care.

Mellan vård och stigma: Upplevelser av somatisk vård hos petienter med substansbrukssyndom2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Internationally, it is estimated that approximately 15.6 million people live with Substance Use Disorder (SUD). In Sweden, around 80,000 individuals are believed to live with SUD - a psychiatric diagnosis developed as a result of prolonged and harmful use of intoxicating substances. This patient group has a greater somatic healthcare need compared to the general population, for example through various infectious diseases and substance use is often identified when patients with SUD access somatic healthcare services. Aim: The aim of the literatur review was to investigate how SUD-patients perceive and experience somatic care. Method: This literature review employed a qualitative approach, analyzing ten interview studies through thematic analysis to generate the findings. Results: The analysis resulted in four main themes, collectively comprising subcategories that illuminate different phenomena related to the aim of the review. The four main themes identified were: Experiences of care, Patients’ reluctance to seek care, Determinants of positive care experiences and lack of knowledge/competence. Conclusion: The findings show that patients with SUD experience stigmatization, discrimination and inadequate treatment in their encounters with somatic healthcare. Patients with SUD describe several consequences of this and how it affects their health. Reported consequences include inadequate pain management and insufficient or absent treatment for withdrawal symptoms. It also emerges that patients’ experiences of somatic healthcare often lead them to avoid both healthcare facilities and treatment.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Seven out of ten women experience menopausal symptoms. Hormonal changes affect both psychological and physical well-being. Knowledge about menopause varies significantly within nations and globally. Lack of knowledge in society contributes to taboo and stigmatization, leading to uncertainty about where women should seek care and support. Approximately 29% of women seeking menopause-related healthcare feel they have not received sufficient support. Aim: The aim of the literature study was to compile women’s experiences of support from healthcare during menopause. Method: A literature study with a qualitative approach was conducted through searches in CINAHL and PubMed, 10 articles were included. An analytical method was used in which meaning units were identified and coded, and then sorted into categories and subcategories. Results: The results were based on 10 qualitative primary studies, involving 196 women. The findings showed that women’s access to support during menopause was influenced by limited knowledge, restricted access to healthcare, and insufficient medical guidance. Women described a need for emotional and social support, with feelings of worry, loneliness, and uncertainty being prominent. Fear, taboos, and experiences of unequal treatment contributed to women often delaying healthcare-seeking until symptoms had become too pronounced. Furthermore, there was a demand for more individualized, holistic, and proactive support från healthcare services. Conclusion: There is a link between knowledge gaps and insufficient supportive care. For women to feel confident seeking care and thereby receiving support, comprehensive knowledge among both women and healthcare professionals is essential.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Colonoscopy is part of the national screening programme, which means that nurses are expected to meet patients who are about to undergo the procedure. Colonoscopy is used to investigate symptoms, detect, treat and prevent colorectal cancer (CRC), as well as to follow up on inflammatory diseases. Undergoing a colonoscopy involves both physical and psychological strain for the patient. For patients to manage the procedure, it is essential that nurses understand their experiences, which constitutes a fundamental prerequisite for providing person-centered care. Purpose: The aim of the literature review was to explore patients’ experiences of undergoing colonoscopy. Method: This thesis was conducted as a literature review based on ten scientific empirical studies with a qualitative research design. The article searches were carried out in the databases CINAHL and PubMed. The articles were analyzed using a qualitative analysis method. Results: The analysis resulted in three categories: A vulnerable and tangible bodily experience, A meaningful care process, and A safe and dignified care relationship, along with seven underlying subcategories. The results indicated that each individual undergoing a colonoscopy is unique and that the experience of pain varies from person to person. Conclusion: This literature review contributes to an increased understanding of patients’ experiences during colonoscopy and highlights the aspects that shape the patient’s situation. In summary, the results identified that the nurse’s ability to recognize and meet individual needs is crucial for the patient’s overall experience.

Arab Immigrant Families in Sweden: Integration Opportunities and Parenting Challenges in Relation to Educational Inclusion and Involvement - An Ethnographic Study2025In: Educational Process: International Journal, ISSN 2147-0901, Vol. 17, no 1, article id e2025334Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background/purpose. This article examines the challenges faced by Arab immigrant families in Sweden, specifically in terms of parenting, cultural identity, and educational involvement, in relation to family roles, social capital, and intergenerational relationships. It asks how families emigrating from the Middle East to Sweden negotiate their Arab culture while trying to adapt to the regulations of the new community and involvement in institutions such as the school. Materials/methods. Using a critical ethnographic approach and thematic analysis, the research draws on in-depth interviews with strategically selected participants, based on their immigration background, family roles, and duration of residence, as well as participant observation methods. Ethical standards included voluntary consent and cultural sensitivity throughout the study. Results. Findings indicate that Arab immigrant families in Sweden face complex, multi-layered education integration challenges relating to how traditional parenting norms may clash with Swedish institutional expectations and create emotional strain, a destabilization of family structures and weakened social cohesion. Parents can experience a significant erosion of social capital, which contributes to a sense of disempowerment and reduced involvement in education. Mothers emerged as key figures, using "emotional capital" to preserve cultural continuity and support integratio.n Conclusion. Emotional and social capital are critical to supporting children’s adaptation and sustaining family unity. The study highlights the significance of culturally responsive education policies and inclusive community-based programs in empowering immigrant families and fostering equitable integration through schools and the broader education system.

    Abstract [en]

Teaching social studies at upper secondary school often involves issues that may be perceived as controversial, such as politics, religion or equality. At the same time, the Swedish curriculum emphasizes the school's democratic mission and the importance of providing students with opportunities to express diverse viewpoints in a safe learning environment. Controversial issues can therefore both contribute to students' democratic competence and pose pedagogical and ethical challenges for teachers.

The aim of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how controversial issues can be integrated into social studies education and what opportunities and challenges this entails for teachers and students. The study is conducted as a qualitative literature review in which scientific articles, doctoral theses and research reports are analyzed. Data collection was carried out through systematic literature searches in relevant academic databases as well as through citation tracking. The results show that teaching controversial issues can strengthen students' critical thinking, democratic skills and understanding of multiple perspectives. At the same time, challenges emerge in relation to classroom climate, the teachers approach, and the risk of students feeling excluded. The study also highlights the importance of clear didactic frameworks and conscious pedagogical leadership in order to address controversial issues in a constructive manner.

Samhällskunskap och skoldemokrati ur elevperspektiv: En systematisk litteraturöversikt om elevinflytande, undervisningspraktiker och demokratisk kompetens2026Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Resultat

    Abstract [sv]

    Sammanfattning/Abstract

Larsson, Anna och Tran, Marcus. (2025). “Relationen är jätte, jätteviktig” – en kvalitativ studie om specialpedagogers arbete med familjehemsplacerade barns skolgång“Relationships are everything” – a qualitative study of special educators' work with children placed in foster care.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Teori

    Metod

Ungdomars perspektiv på lagen om visitationszoner2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Bildstöd i engelskundervisning för flerspråkiga elever2026Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Symptoms, problems and care needs among patients newly diagnosed with oesophageal and gastric cancer: Implications for early palliative care2022Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Patients with oesophageal and gastric cancer face a poor prognosis and multiple symptoms and problems that negatively affect their quality of life. In view of the prognosis and extensive illness burden, an early palliative care approach is of importance.

Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to describe and compare symptoms, problems and care needs in relation to the initial treatment strategy among patients newly diagnosed with oesophageal and gastric cancer and to explore how those with incurable illness manage everyday life.

Method: The project comprised three studies with a quantitative (Studies I–III) and one study with a qualitative design (Study IV). Study I and II were based on a Swedish cohort of patients who died from oesophageal and gastric cancer in 2014–2016. Data were collected from the National Register for Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer (Studies I and II), the National Cause of Death Register (Studies I and II), the Swedish Register of Palliative Care (Study I) and the National Patient Register (Study II). The impact of the initial treatment strategy and survival time on the quality of end-of-life care (Study I) and the impact of initial treatment strategy and assignment of a contact nurse on health care use (Study II) were investigated. Study III was a cross-sectional study on patients newly diagnosed with oesophageal and gastric cancer. Data on quality of life, symptoms and problems were collected using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) instruments QLQ-C30 and QLQ-OG25 and the Integrated Patient Outcome Scale. Study IV was a semi-structured interview study on how persons newly diagnosed with incurable oesophageal and gastric cancer manage everyday life.

Results: Patients with a survival of ≤3 and 4–7 months had higher risk for hospital death compared with patients with a survival ≥17 months. Patients surviving ≤3 months had lower risk for bereavement support and end-of-life information, compared with those with a survival ≥17 months. The performance of an oral health assessment and pain assessment was not associated with survival time (Study I). Patients with palliative treatment and no tumour-directed treatment had a higher incidence rate ratio for unplanned care compared with those receiving curative treatment. Patients with no tumour-directed treatment also had a lower incidence rate ratio for planned care compared with those with a curative treatment. Patients with a contact nurse assigned to them had higher incidence rate ratios for unplanned care and planned outpatient care visits, compared with patients with no contact nurse assigned (Study II). Among all patients, the quality of life was markedly lower than in the general Swedish population, and impairments were found in all aspects of quality of life, particularly role and emotional functioning and symptoms such as eating-related problems, fatigue, insomnia and dyspnoea. The majority of patients reported severe anxiety among family and friends. Among patients with oesophageal cancer, those with a palliative treatment strategy, compared with a curative strategy, reported lower quality of life, and physical and role functioning, and higher intensity of several symptoms and problems. Among patients with gastric cancer, no differences between treatment groups were found (Study III). Interpretation of the interviews resulted in the overall theme “Striving towards normality in an unpredictable situation”, with three related themes, “Trying to comprehend the disease”, “Dealing with the consequences of illness” and “Re-evaluating what is important in everyday life”, and seven subthemes (Study IV).

Conclusion: Patients newly diagnosed with oesophageal and gastric cancer suffer from poor quality of life and several burdensome symptoms and problems and those with the poorest prognosis exhibit the highest risk of receiving unplanned care and low-quality end-of-life care. Patients with incurable illness manage their everyday life by striving for normalcy. The findings emphasize the need for a proactive palliative care approach to enhance patients’ quality of life and ability to manage the new life situation.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Patients diagnosed with oesophageal and gastric cancer face a poor prognosis and numerous challenges of symptom management, lifestyle adjustments and complex treatment regimens. The multifaceted care needs and rapid disease progression reinforce the need for proactive and coherent health care. According to the national cancer strategy, providing coherent health care and palliative support is an area of priority. More knowledge is needed about health care utilization and the characteristics of the health care service in order to understand the readiness, accessibility and quality of current health care. The aim of this study was to describe individuals’ health care use from the time of treatment decision until death, and investigate the impact of the initial treatment strategy and assignment of a contact nurse (CN) on health care use among patients with oesophageal and gastric cancer. Methods: This population-based cohort study included patients who died from oesophageal and gastric cancer in Sweden during 2014–2016. Through linking data from the National Register for Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer, the National Cause of Death Register, and the National Patient Register, 2614 individuals were identified. Associations between the initial treatment strategy and CN assignment, and health care use were investigated. Adjusted incidence rate ratios (IRRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using Poisson regression. Results: Patients receiving palliative treatment and those receiving no tumour-directed treatment had a higher IRR for unplanned hospital stays and unplanned outpatient care visits compared with patients who received curative treatment. Patients receiving no tumour-directed treatment also had a lower IRR for planned hospital stays and planned outpatient care visits compared with patients given curative treatment. Compared with this latter group, patients with palliative treatment had a higher IRR for planned outpatient care visits. Patients assigned a CN had a higher IRR for unplanned hospital stays, unplanned outpatient care visits and planned outpatient care visits, compared with patients not assigned a CN. Conclusions: A palliative treatment strategy and no tumour-directed treatment were associated with higher rates of unplanned health care compared with a curative treatment strategy, suggesting that a proactive approach is imperative to ensure quality palliative care.

Shared Reading i skolan – läsning på andra villkor?2024In: Litteraturdidaktik och känslor: Litteraturdidaktisk nätverkskonferens 2021 / [ed] Lena Ahlin; Jonas Asklund; Christoffer Dahl; Maria Freij; Petra Magnusson; Anna Smedberg Bondesson, Stockholm University Press, 2024, p. 137-158Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

H&M and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR): Sustainability Challenges in Fast Fashion2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study uses qualitative methods in a case study analysis of H&M, focusing on the timeline from year 2019 to 2024. Using the Planet dimension of the triple bottom line (TBL)framework as an analytical lens, the study assesses the gap between the company’s reported sustainability practices and the requirement of the Ecodesign Sustainable Product Regulation(ESPR), with a particular focus on products circularity and supply chain transparencyenabled by digital solutions such as the Digital Product Passport (DPP). The findings reveal a substantial discrepancy between H&M´s voluntary sustainability narratives and mandatory requirements introduced by ESPR. As a result, the mandatory ESPR is expected to shift the company´s sustainability agenda from self-defined initiatives toward legally enforced compliance. Ultimately, this study shows that mandatory regulations, such as ESPR, are essential for standardizing sustainability practices and ensuring genuine accountability with the fast-fashion industry.

The Flawed Agreement: The 2022 French Proposal in the Bulgaria–North Macedonia EU Accession Dispute2025Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 14 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis researches the 2022 ‘French Proposal', Council Presidency document on the successful mediation between North Macedonia and Bulgaria to lift the Bulgarian veto on EU negotiations. The framework of Liberal Intergovernmentalism (LI) is used, supported by a qualitative document analysis on four official documents: The ‘French Proposal’, the Council Conclusions adopting the proposal, the 2017 Treaty of Friendship between North Macedonia and Bulgaria and the 2022 Bilateral Protocol that adds to the 2017 treaty. Together with twenty-three academic sources, the analysis’ structure aligns with the three pillars of LI theory: state preferences, bargaining and institutional choice.

The findings have shown that Bulgaria seeks symbolic, nationalist and identity-based demands from North Macedonia, including a constitutional amendment that recognises a Bulgarian minority, textbook and education changes and protection against hate speech. The North Macedonian preferences are focused on unlocking their EU accession process, but has so far not been able to implement the demands due to domestic resistance. France helped mediate in 2022 soon after the war in Ukraine began, seeking EU credibility and national prestige.

The bargaining outcome was one-sided due to Bulgaria's low-cost veto leverage, allowing it to include bilateral identity demands into EU conditionality, which has not happened before in EU enlargement. The institutional design strengthened their leverage, as the institutions created have minimal enforcement capabilities and the demands themselves remain vaguely worded, open to Bulgarian interpretation.

It is concluded that the 2022 French Proposal as a mediation and agreement was unrealistic to implement, had elements not seen before in EU enlargement, damaging to EU credibility by legitimising nationalist demands and structurally flawed from the outset.

    Abstract [en]

Protein design has the potential to revolutionize biotechnology and medicine. While most efforts have focused on proteins with well-defined structures, increased recognition of the functional significance of intrinsically disordered regions, together with improvements in their modeling, has paved the way to their computational design. This review summarizes recent advances in designing intrinsically disordered regions with tailored conformational ensembles, molecular recognition, and phase behavior. We discuss challenges in combining models of predictive accuracy with scalable design workflows and outline emerging strategies that integrate knowledge-based, physics-based, and machine-learning approaches.
