Multilingual Learners’ EFL Acquisition: Perspectives from Swedish Teachers and L2 Students in Middle Primary School2025Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study explores how being a multilingual learner—interconnected with socioeconomic factors and digitalization—influences the acquisition of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) among multilingual L2 students in Swedish primary schools. Using a mixed-methods approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with teachers and students in grades 4 and 5 and analyzed students’ English grades to gain insights into both subjective experiences and measurable language proficiency. The study aims to examine the advantages and challenges multilingual students face in learning English, the role of socioeconomic background in English language acquisition, and the impact of digitalization on English proficiency. The findings reveal a polarization in English proficiency among multilingual learners. Some students demonstrate strong oral English skills, often surpassing their Swedish proficiency, while others struggle with foundational language skills. Teachers emphasized that students with a solid foundation in their first or second language tend to acquire English more easily, whereas those with weaker proficiency in their prior languages experience greater challenges. Socioeconomic background was identified as a key factor affecting English learning, as students from lower-income areas often have limited academic support at home. Digitalization emerged as both an opportunity and an obstacle—while digital exposure enhances listening and speaking skills, students often rely heavily on translation tools, which can hinder independent writing development. These results highlight the complexity of multilingualism in EFL acquisition and suggest that background factors play a more significant role than multilingualism itself.

Teachers' Perspectives On Value-Creating Learning In English Education: Interpretation, Curriculum Connections, And Its Impact On Student Motivation In Swedish Lower Primary Schools2025Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Value-creating learning has the potential to revolutionize English education by transforming passive instruction into dynamic, meaningful experiences that deeply engage students. This study explores how Swedish lower primary school teachers (1-3) interpret and implement value-creating learning in English education, focusing on how it relates to curriculum goals. By integrating real-world contexts into the classroom, value-creating learning fosters student motivation and strengthens their confidence and communicative abilities in English.

Through qualitative interviews with seven lower primary school teachers, this study uncovers the transformative opportunities and challenges of implementing value-creating learning. Teachers who embraced student-centered and interactive approaches saw their students become more motivated, engaged, and willing to take risks in their language learning. However, implementation varied significantly depending on teachers’ confidence in their English proficiency. Those with lower confidence tended to rely more on structured, textbook-based methods, limiting students' exposure to authentic language use.

Despite these challenges, our findings highlight the extensive benefits of value-creating learning when successfully integrated. By making English relevant to students' lives and fostering real-world communication, this approach can bridge the gap between curriculum goals and student engagement. To unlock its full potential, teachers need greater support through professional development and clearer curricular guidance. To further the research of our study, value-creating learning should be investigated and refined to maximize its impact on English education.

Bob Marley som kulturarv: Andrafiering, autenticitet och kommodifiering i reggaeturismen på Jamaica2021In: Identitet i en föränderlig värld: Sju nya historieskrivningar / [ed] Erik Alvstad; Irene Andersson; Ingmarie Danielsson Malmros, Malmö: Malmö universitet, 2021, p. 82-112Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This article uses the UNESCO World Heritage designationof Jamaican reggae as its starting point for a critical discussion of the perceptions of culture and authenticity within the tourist industry. Research shows that cultural heritage sites are prone to economic and cultural exploitation, as tourist industry actors use the UNESCO label for commercial benefit. In my study, I highlight how these tendencies already exist within the reggae-tourism business in Jamaica. Using material from Jamaica Tourist Board’s Instagram account and user comments on Tripadvisor regarding the Jamaican tourist attraction “Rastafari Indigenous Village”, the paper explores how dominant colonial perceptions of “primitive cultures” and “happy natives” are visible among tourists visiting Jamaica, and used by local travel companies and organisations in their marketing of tourist attractions related to reggae. My findings demonstrate how reggae tourism is entangled in processes of cultural commodification, where meaning and symbolic associations have been attached to material objects and people, making them marketable to western tourists. Accordingly, the representations of reggae culture in Jamaican tourism can be traced to colonial discourses of authenticity and exoticism, where western modernity operates as a hierarchal indicatorof power.

Mellanstadielärares användning av matematiska representationsformer2025Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Values and Organizing Principles in the Swedish Resettlement System: Exploring the Benefits of an Ethnographic Regime Approach2022In: sozialpolitik.ch, ISSN 2297-8224, no 1/2022Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Resettlement has received increased political and mediatic attention in recent years as a safe pathway for refugees. It is also seen as a way for receiving states to manage migration while abiding by the UNHCR’s humanitarian ideals. This parallel track of keeping migration at bay and aiming to help the most vulnerable demands further exploration. Here I examine values and principles found in the Swedish resettlement process through an ethnographic regime approach. In previous scholarship such aspects of resettlement have received little attention, and, if considered, been approached with a focus limited to one or two actors of the resettlement system. Discussing the resettlement system as a regime helps explore how values and principles are shaped by a plurality of actors, and – in turn – shape the structures that make up resettlement as a durable solution for refugee emplacement.

evoSegment: 4D image segmentation of microstructural evolution using joint histograms2024In: Tomography of Materials and Structures, ISSN 2949-673X, Vol. 4, article id 100023Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A method for semantic segmentation of microstructure evolution from 4D imaging data is described and demonstrated. The method is based on a joint histogram describing the time history of the grayscale in each voxel of the images. After identifying and labeling clusters in the joint histogram, the labels are mapped back to the image. The results demonstrate accurate segmentation and characterization of sample evolution. The advantages of the proposed method include automatic segmentation of many time steps and the ability to track grayscale evolution over time and thereby discriminate similar evolution in different material phases. The method is demonstrated through application to 4D X-ray tomography datasets of temperature cycling in cement mortar and tensile testing of a cast iron sample. Water and air exchange in a pore inside the cement mortar is successfully segmented as a function of temperature. In the case of the deforming cast iron sample, several damage mechanisms are identified and segmented. The method is implemented in an open-source Python package called evoSegment.

Using Agent-Based Social Simulations to Inform Organ Donation Policymaking: Adopting the Spanish Approach in Sweden2025In: The 26th International Workshop on Multi-Agent-Based Simulation: accepted papers, 2025Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Organ donation is a crucial aspect of healthcare, yet, the number of donors is insufficient to cover the demand for transplant procedures. In the European Union, around 15 people die each day waiting for a life-saving organ.  National policies differ greatly among countries, but it is unclear how successful policies affect Deceased Organ Donation when introduced in other settings. This paper explores the use of Agent-Based Social Simulation (ABSS) to inform organ donation policymaking. It provides policy actors with a safe environment to investigate the consequences of different policy interventions without the risk of harming people. We present a simulation model of the Swedish organ donation system, where we can investigate the impact of Spain's policy approach, which has the highest DOD rates in Europe. The results highlight the potential of ABSS as a tool for evaluating policy interventions in complex healthcare systems, enabling policymakers to identify and evaluate strategies before implementation.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

A thread in the colonial web: the Malmö cotton textile industry 1855–18722025In: Weaving it together: histories of the textile industry in Sweden and international perspectives / [ed] Pål Brunnström & Simon Sirenius Frohlund, Malmö: Malmö universitet, 2025, p. 15-46Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Cotton, as a raw material, links two critical processes in world history: industrialisation and colonialism. The industrial production of cotton textiles played a key role in the industrialisation of Western Europe and, simultaneously, the emergence of colonialism on a global scale. Cotton would also come to play a key role during the early years of Swedish industrialisation, despite conventionally being seen as a successful case of industrialisation through the domestic consumption of domestic products, ignoring the obviously non-Swedish character of the raw material. Recent research paints Sweden as a ‘junior partner’ that was firmly integrated into the dominant colonial powers.

The aim of this text is to recontextualise the emergence of the Swedish cotton textile industry given the expanding international research field focusing on the interconnectedness of the industrial revolution in Western European countries and the colonial system of violence, resource extraction and labour exploitation. We do so using the example of Malmö, focusing on the period from 1855 to 1872, when the first cotton industries were established in the city and industrial capitalism in Sweden took off.

In dialogue with current research on Sweden’s position in the colonial world, we can conclude that the Malmö cotton textile industry is not an example of formal Swedish colonialism, Swedes being directly involved in colonialism or settler colonialism. Instead, we find the notion of ‘colonial complicity’ useful. Complicity, in this context, refers to an ambiguous position of participation and benefit from colonial discourses and practices.

    Abstract [sv]

Weaving it together: Histories of the textile industry in Sweden and international Perspectives2025Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This volume presents novel research perspectives on the Swedish textile industry’s history, with a particular focus on its international connections. One of the book’s purposes is to cast new light on the transnational connectivity of the Swedish textile industry, particularly cotton textiles. Both cotton and textiles in general have played a key part in Swedish industrialisation according to both academic and popular historical narratives, yet the subject has been treated in national isolation despite the many ways the textile industry has been shaped by processes and circumstances that are international in scope.

In this book, we try to look beyond the national borders and get some glimpses of how the Swedish textile industry is interwoven with international networks for dissemination of technology, know-how, consumer products and raw material – especially for the cotton textile production.

Textile is a commodity which has been traded over long distances for centuries. However, the emergence of the industrial production of cotton represents something totally new. The global proliferation of affordable cotton was facilitated by an intricate network of international relations woven by the British Empire, which linked Swedish spinners and weavers, mill owners and consumers to an international system of chattel slavery and colonialism. In other words, the cotton textile industry linked Sweden to the world in brand-new ways.

Tillträdesstrategier för inkluderande lek2025Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

sig in i pågående lek.

    arbete.

Att förebygga frånvaro, en relation i taget: Lärares upplevelser av frånvaro på högstadiet2025Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Truancy is an increasing problem in Sweden and the rest of the world. Truancy in the formative years risks the student’s mental health, future opportunities in their work-life, and means increasing costs for society. This paper inductively examines teachers’ experiences of truancy through conducting semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. The teacher’s role in school is in practice extended to more than just teaching and is in this study considered as being part of the social work that takes place in the school. Through the understanding of two theories, Social Capital, and the Street-level bureaucrat, this study dives deeper into the problem of school truancy and the work teachers do to promote the commitment and health of their students. Results of this study indicate that the work of teachers is limited to their ability to work with students to establish relationships and nurture a healthy social school environment. When truancy occurs, the problems teachers face is further exacerbated by limited resources and ambiguous expectations and a lack of cooperation from parents. One of the most important findings in this study is how teachers emphasize the importance of forming relationships in their work to secure high levels of commitment and lowering risks of burnout in the student’s life. School can be seen as a primarily social setting where relationships are a priority which, when established, promotes teaching.

    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, everyone who works in preschools is obliged by law to make a report of concern to the social service if there is concern or suspicion that a child is or may be at risk of harm. Although reports of concerns generally seem to be increasing, social workers in various municipalities around the country can see that preschool teachers are not reporting concerns to the extent that they should. In order to be able to do something about this, knowledge is needed about which factors may make preschool teachers hesitate or completely refrain from making a report of concern, but also which factors motivate them to make such a report when necessary. This became the starting point for this study with the aim of investigating how the process from the first concern to a possible report of concern is perceived by preschool teachers. The study was qualitative and data was collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with five preschool teachers working at different municipal preschools in Malmö. The results showed that se-veral of the interviewees struggled with ambivalence about whether the concern was really something worth reporting and what the consequences would be for the child, the relationship with the guardians and the preschool teachers themselves. It also emerged that support from colleagues and management was important to facilitate the process for the individual preschool teacher, especially when it resulted in a report of concern. Those who had felt they were alone in the process and the decision to report were still negatively affected by it even though several years could have passed. However, they all expressed that the care for and focus on the child made the process and the decision to make a report of concern when required easier and obvious.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine how practitioners in outpatient care apply relationship based practice within a manual-based treatment program for youth involved in crime. Practitioners need to navigate between standardized methods and their clients’ individual needs, which could be perceived as a challenging balance to maintain. This essay is based on six qualitative interviews with professionals working within Swedish social services, who are all qualified practitioners within the manual-based program Ett nytt vägval. The results show that the interviewees have a positive outlook on the manual-based treatment program and do not perceive the program as restrictive in regard to relationship based practice and professional discretion. The practitioners are perceived to maintain a sufficient level of autonomy in their interactions with their clients, allowing them to build helpful relationships.

The Making of a Good Carer: Dementia and Family Caregiving in an Era of Refamilization and Responsibilization in the Nordic Context2025In: Journal of Medical Humanities, ISSN 1041-3545, E-ISSN 1573-3645, p. 1-14Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A growing number of older people with dementia are continuing to live in their own homes for prolonged periods, leading to a growing number of family carers. An aging population and neoliberal austerity politics are contributing to increased family-provided care instead of formal care services. This is particularly noticeable in the Nordic context, where the welfare state has traditionally been based on universalizing policies designed to mitigate inequalities. The aim of this article is to explore societal expectations of family caregivers and the rhetoric surrounding family caregiving through analyzing a Swedish handbook entitled Dementia for Family Carers: A Handbook from the Swedish Dementia Centre. The textual analysis identifies the various responsibilities expected of family caregivers and illustrates how this responsibility can best be designed. The responsibility of family carers is perceived as natural and self-evident, especially in the context of spouses or partners. In such relationships, when caring for someone with dementia, the expectation is that the carer will transition into a caregiving role rather than continuing to be a life partner. Family caregivers are also expected to be central coordinators of formal and informal care. Furthermore, the responsibility includes the carers’ own self-care and ensuring they have the necessary knowledge and support. In tandem with the refamilization process, in which more family carers are providing care for relatives, idealizing and norm-making processes of family caregiving are emerging. This responsibilization process is crafting conceptions of the good carer, one who is responsible for relatives and formal care, while also prioritizing their own well-being.

Non-Invasive People Counting in Smart Buildings: Employing Machine Learning with Binary PIR Sensors2025In: Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Agents and Artificial Intelligence: Volume 3: ICAART / [ed] Ana Paula Rocha; Luc Steels; H. Jaap van den Herik, INSTICC , 2025, p. 394-405Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

People counting in smart buildings is crucial for the efficient management of building systems such as energy, space allocation, efficiency, and occupant comfort. This study investigates the use of two non-invasive binary Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors for estimating the number of people in seven office rooms with different people counting intervals. Previous studies often relied on sensor fusion or more complex signal-based PIR sensors, which increased hardware costs, raised privacy concerns, and added installation complexity. Our approach addresses these limitations by utilizing fewer sensors, reducing hardware costs, and simplifying installation, making it scalable and flexible for different room configurations, while also ensuring high consideration of privacy. Additionally, binary PIR sensors are typically part of smart building systems, eliminating the need for additional sensors. We employed several machine learning methods to analyze motion detected by binary PIR sensors, imp roving the accuracy of people counting estimates. We analyzed important features by extracting event count, duration, and density from sensor data, along with features from the room’s shape, to estimate the number of people. We used different machine learning models for estimating the number of people. Models like Gradient Boosting, XGBoost, MLP, and LGBM demonstrated superior performance for their strong ability to handle complex, non-linear relationships in sensor data, high-dimensional datasets, and imbalanced data, which are common challenges in people counting tasks using PIR sensors. These models were evaluated using performance metrics such as accuracy and F1-score. Additionally, the results show that features such as passage events and the number of detected events, combined with machine learning algorithms, can achieve good accuracy and reliability in people counting.

Intrusion Detection Framework for Internet of Things with Rule Induction for Model Explanation2025In: Sensors, E-ISSN 1424-8220, Vol. 25, no 6, p. 1845-1845Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

As the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices grows, challenges in security, privacy, and interoperability become increasingly significant. IoT devices often have resource constraints, such as limited computational power, energy efficiency, bandwidth, and storage, making it difficult to implement advanced security measures. Additionally, the diversity of IoT devices creates vulnerabilities and threats that attackers can exploit, including spoofing, routing, man-in-the-middle, and denial-of-service. To address these evolving threats, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) have become a vital solution. IDS actively monitors network traffic, analyzing incoming and outgoing data to detect potential security breaches, ensuring IoT systems remain safeguarded against malicious activity. This study introduces an IDS framework that integrates ensemble learning with rule induction for enhanced model explainability. We study the performance of five ensemble algorithms (Random Forest, AdaBoost, XGBoost, LightGBM, and CatBoost) for developing effective IDS for IoT. The results show that XGBoost outperformed the other ensemble algorithms on two publicly available datasets for intrusion detection. XGBoost achieved 99.91% accuracy and 99.88% AUC-ROC on the CIC-IDS2017 dataset, as well as 98.54% accuracy and 93.06% AUC-ROC on the CICIoT2023 dataset, respectively. We integrate model explainability to provide transparent IDS system using a rule induction method. The experimental results confirm the efficacy of the proposed approach for providing a lightweight, transparent, and trustworthy IDS system that supports security analysts, end-users, and different stakeholders when making decisions regarding intrusion and non-intrusion events.

    Abstract [en]

Wound healing is the process by which the function of damaged tissue is restored following surgery, trauma or other sources of tissue damage. The management of wounds is a fundamental aspect of the management of the patient following a fragility fracture, especially following a hip fracture and associated surgery. Ageing skin and multiple comorbidities are significant factors in skin injury and wound healing problems.

The effective evidence-based management of surgical wounds following surgery after a fragility fracture can be challenging as ageing and comorbidities affect wound healing. Skin and wound care involves careful skin and wound assessment and attention to infection prevention measures while managing the factors affecting wound healing. Clinical considerations in wound management also include maintaining adequate nutrition, moisture, treating oedema and preventing further injury.

This chapter aims to provide an overview of skin and wound assessment and evidence-based care interventions that can optimise wound healing in older people with fragility fractures.

Handlingsmöjligheter i förskolans miljö2025Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Strategic Integration of Case Studies for Enhanced Pedagogical Outcomes2024Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This presentation by Elizabeth Ashley Fox-Jensen for the CARN conference at Malmo University explores how real-world case studies, incorporated through action research cycles, can enrich pedagogical outcomes in higher education. Drawing on collaborations with NGOs—including High 5 Girls, the Maternity Foundation, and Toilets for All—students engaged directly with global issues, from STEM inclusion to maternal healthcare and sanitation access. By merging participatory design methods and user-centered practices, the case studies connected classroom theory to tangible problem-solving tasks, boosting engagement and critical thinking. Emphasis on sustainability and cultural awareness further aligns these experiences with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, expanding the social impact of academic work. Strategies for educators include early selection of case-study partners, cultural-sensitivity training, stakeholder engagement, and resource management. The results demonstrate heightened student motivation, improved learning quality, and meaningful contributions to community-based projects—underscoring the transformative potential of integrative, case-based learning in cultivating responsible, globally conscious graduates.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore the experience of working with women exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) and the support systems available to those subjected to IPV through the perspective of eight Swedish social workers in different municipalities. This was done through the theoretical framework of Micheal Lipsky's theory about street-level bureaucrats, as well as discretion. In order to determine this, qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews, which allowed participants the freedom to express their experiences and reflections in a more detailed manner. The findings revealed that opinions on the effectiveness of the support system varied across different municipalities. Even though IPV is recognized as a widespread issue across society, and not a new problem at that, many social services in Swedish municipalities lack the necessary resources and strategies to adequately address the needs of women exposed to IPV. The overwhelming opinion among the eight interviewed working professionals was that the support system exhibits deficiencies in different areas, including collaboration with other government agencies. Furthermore, this study highlighted that despite growing awareness of IPV as a social problem, there seems to be an inconsistent approach in the application of resources in the support system, as well as inconsistent levels of support when comparing municipalities. This lack of consistency poses a challenge in ensuring that all women who need help receive the same level of support. In conclusion, while the experiences and opinions of the interviewees differed in some aspects, a common viewpoint among some of the interviewees emerged: the existing support system is insufficient and requires improvement in order to meet the needs of women experiencing IPV. The study suggests that reforms are necessary to develop a more efficient, accessible and consistent support system that can keep up with the fast-paced changes in society.

    Abstract [en]

Criminal networks frequently recruit children between the ages of 12-15 years old, using peer pressure and the promise of belonging, money and social status to lure them in. This study explores the growing involvement of children and youth in criminal networks and gang-related activities, focusing on the risk factors on individual, group and societal levels that contributes to their recruitment. The study highlights and examines the role of socio-economic factors, familial conditions, and educational gaps associated with an increase in vulnerability of youth to gang involvement. Through a comprehensive scoping review of existing research and literature the goal was to identify key determinants and risk factors on multiple levels such as individual, group and societal. The research showed that there is a big importance of early intervention programs and a need for further research within this area, especially within a Swedish context. This study further aimed to provide a deeper understanding of the complex interplay of risk factors that facilitate youth participation in criminal networks, contributing to the broader societal issue of gang violence and juvenile crime. The results showed that risk factors could be found within multiple domains. The factors that appeared to have the most important impact could be identified within the family, among peers, within school and in the environment. Furthermore, a variety of individual factors such as values, behavioural issues and neuropsychological disabilities were identified as important risk factors for youth joining criminal gangs. The results of this study also showed that several risk factors within multiple domains created a cumulative risk which further increased the probability of youth joining a criminal gang.

    Abstract [en]

In Sweden we have mandatory elementary school and a perception that school is important for being able to cope later in life. Despite this, absences seem to have increased in recent years. The purpose of this study is to investigate how school counselors describe problematic school absence and what underlying factors they believe exist. Furthermore, the study aims to find out what obstacles and opportunities school counselors perceive to exist in working to promote and prevent problematic school absence. I use qualitative interviews to investigate how school counselors work with the phenomenon. The results of this study show that school counselors perceive problematic school absence as complex. They believe that there is rarely one cause, but that there are usually several underlaying factors. This means that they need to have a broad perspective when meeting with the students. The promotional and preventive work is carried out primarily by creating good relationships, well-functioning cooperation, routines and an adapted school environment. To analyse the results, I use Bronfenbrenner´s (1979) developmental ecological theory. The theory is used to illustrate the interaction between the causes behind problematic school absence.

Oral Health challenges in children from socially deprived areas

Everyone who works with children should know about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that all children should have the same right to highest attainable standard of health. Despite good oral health in the Nordic countries, studies show that children living in socially deprived environments have a greatly increased risk of poor oral health. These children are not reached by preventive measures, they more frequently do not show up for dental appointments and they receive less dental care than others. Therefore, in addition to a more general population based prevention approach, a special high-risk approach is needed to reach children in socially deprived areas. It is also important that the promotion and prevention efforts start from an early age. There are large knowledge gaps regarding the effects of different prevention and treatment strategies, and health economic analyzes are rare. It is a particular challenge to systematically document and evaluate oral health promotion and prevention directed at children in socially vulnerable environments to enable research. There is a need for interdisciplinary research also including clinicians. The vision must be health equity and that both health promotion and preventive measures contribute to closing the oral health gap between different social groups.

Social and societal implications of tooth loss, TMD pain and rehabilitation hereof

Poor oral health, as in the case of tooth loss and temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain, can have large impact on a person’s quality of life and social relations. These individual consequences can in turn be important for society, as the poor oral health can lead to general health issues, higher costs in the health care system, more absence from work, and unemployment. Inequality is a major challenge in relation to tooth loss and socially vulnerable citizens more often presents a non-functional dentition. For TMD pain, inequality in relation to socioeconomic position is less pronounced and the main issue is instead a predominant female prevalence. In socially vulnerable persons, relatively non-invasive and simpleprosthetic rehabilitation can be a good treatment option and there is some indication that oral rehabilitation can helpin a social rehabilitation of these citizens. For TMD pain, non-invasive treatments such as patient education, self-care, cognitive behavioral modification, stretching, and occlusal appliances are recommended.

    Abstract [en]

Oral health in the margins of the community

Citizens living on the edge of the community form groups which may be difficult to approach and identify. Concurrent social problems are often present at the individual level. From a scientific perspective research on oral health related factors among underserved and socially marginalized groups of citizens, represent methodical challenges which call for alternative approaches. However, from a public health perspective studies from the Nordic countries have identified several causes of poor oral health and barriers to oral care at the individual, the organizational and the policy level. The poor oral health and the lack of sufficient oral care services calls for tailored oral health promotion programs to these groups of vulnerable citizens and underlines and stresses the responsibility of the dental profession in common and the Universities in particular to prioritize this field of research. In the epidemiological as well as in the individual perspective these groups of citizens bear a heavy burden of oral disease - maybe the groups that carries the burden which influence the live of the individual the most.

Lärares didaktiska val av konkret material i matematikundervisningens tidiga skolår2025Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The study examines mathematical conversations in relation to middle school students' understanding of mathematics in schools with different socio-economic backgrounds. It explores whether students have equal opportunities to understand mathematics despite their socio-economic conditions and which aspects of conversations that influence their learning. The study seeks to answer the following questions; How do socioeconomic conditions affect students' mathematical conversations? What impact does conversation structure and content have on middle school students' mathematics understanding?

The study uses discourse theory, which examines language and communication in a social contexts. Combined with a thematic analysis that examines patterns, the study analyzes mathematical conversations using qualitative observations and "stimulated recall interviews" at two schools with different socio-economic statuses (SES) in the south of Sweden. This is then further investigated using a discourse analysis. It finds that pupils at a school with a high SES used a coherent and logical mathematical language, enhancing their reasoning and understanding through more structured communication. In contrast, pupils at a school with a low SES displayed fragmented and informal language, affecting their mathematical reasoning. The results indicate that socio-economic factors might influence students' communication and reasoning in mathematics, with students from higher socio-economic backgrounds showing a deeper understanding of the subject.

The study concludes that linguistic and communicative resources are crucial for mathematical understanding and that socio-economic disparities might create unequal educational opportunities. This is discussed from the perspective of how, in this study, socio-economic backgrounds impact pupils' mathematical conversations, and their understanding of math. Differences like engagement, structure and reflective discussions are identified. The study and its results are relevant for future teachers, highlighting the need for inclusive teaching practices. Future studies could explore teachers' roles in fostering equitable mathematical discussions.

Formativ bedömning i SO-ämnena årskurs F-32025Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Formative assessment is a central factor in students' learning process, by continuously providing feedback, students are given the opportunity to develop in their learning. By conducting a survey of teachers' perspectives and experiences, we want to contribute with a deeper insight into how formative assessment is applied in practice, its possibilities and the challenges that may arise. The purpose of the survey is to highlight teachers' understanding of formative assessment, how they explain its purpose and function in teaching, and what conditions and obstacles they encounter in the work of applying formative assessment in practice. The question is: How do teachers view the importance of formative assessment and its application in practice, within the framework of cooperative learning? The method used for the implementation of the study and for data collection was semi-structured interviews. Based on the information collected during the interviews, it is noted that formative assessment is a central aspect in students' knowledge development as it is adapted in teaching based on the needs and conditions that the students have.

    Abstract [sv]

Lärares syn på formativ bedömning inom SO-ämnena i mellanstadiet2025Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

läroprocesser i ateljen.

Mellanstadielärares användning av digitala verktyg i svenskundervisningen2025Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
