    Abstract [sv]

Palestinian women of Syria mobilising to influence knowledge production2023In: Forced Migration Review, ISSN 1460-9819, E-ISSN 2051-3070, no June, p. 5-7Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The voices of Palestinian women of Syria are often silenced in knowledge produced in humanitarian research and practice. ‘Speaking back’ sessions provide crucial insights into these women’s experiences and their relevance for discussions on rights mobilisation.

Forced migrants are often asked to share parts of their lives with journalists, researchers and humanitarian professionals. Knowledge production is part and parcel of humanitarian practice: humanitarian actors endlessly collect, share and analyse testimonies from marginalised peoples in order to access funding and distribute aid. However, research participants’ wider stories and experiences are often silenced. They are seldom asked to take part in these processes and have little influence over how their words, voices and images are framed. Few researchers have actively engaged in how to empower participants from marginalised communities to act as consultants and experts that inform dialogues on knowledge production about their own communities.

    SM-Veckan - A Study of Event-innovation in Swedish Sport2023Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Aim and Research Questions:

This study analyses the development of “SM-veckan” [: “the Swedish national championship week”], a sport event where several sport federations since 2009 have staged their national championships together.

The analysis has three steps: 1) identifying the main stakeholders of SM-veckan, 2) describing how they perceive SM-veckan and 3) analysing how the perceptions influence the event’s development.

The study aims at understanding how national federations can increase their popularity by rethinking their national championships and how host cities can support (and make use of) such “event innovations”.

    Theoretical Background and Literature Review

Recently, a branch of research on non-mega sport events has developed and recently also considered the role of innovation with a focus on the refinement of existing events (Hoff et al., 2022; Taks, 2016). In contrast, this paper studies the development of a wholly new event albeit based on traditional national championships.

Theoretically, the paper draws on the classical understanding of innovation as ‘creative destruction’ with long-term consequences and the more recent idea of innovation as a “creative” process aimed at rather immediate “qualitative change” for several beneficiaries(Tjønndal, 2017, pp. 293, 302). The theory's focus on event innovation and (social) outcome in a broad sense is further reflected in the study's sorting of stakeholders according to their organisational (e.g. interest in a well-organised events) and social (e.g. interest in social impacts) commitments (Ferrand & Skirstad, 2015).

Research Design, Methodology and Data Analysis

The main part of the data stems from documents from and semistructured interviews with representatives from the three most recent host cities and three sports (swimming, canoeing and padel). The documents have been collected. The interviews will be recorded and analysed in time for the presentation at the conference. The analysis also includes newspaper coverage of SM-veckan since 2009 to indicate the public perception of the event and serve as a background for the interviews.

The analysis of the material happened in three steps (Jones, 2014, Chapter 14).

    1. Extracting information related to the formal organisation of the event and main stakeholders.
    2. Coding data related to the perception of the sports and host cities.
    3. Forming codes into themes and discuss them theoretically

    Results/Findings and Discussion **

The preliminary analysis shows that the main stakeholders of the event consist of a core group with a stable member base, and a temporary stakeholder group, which changes after each event. Considering their social and organisational commitments, however adds further nuances.

The Swedish Sport Confederation (Riksidrottsförbundet) and the Swedish national public broadcaster (SVT) are core members and seems mainly highly organisational commited. Especially the broadcaster wishes to streamline the event e.g. by priotising the most popular sports. The sports confederation wants a stream-lined event too. In order to pull off both a winter and a summer edition annually, the confederation must work efficiently.

Among the temporary stakeholders, the host cities are both socially and organisationally engaged as organisers with an outspoken interest in offering something spectacular to the locals. The other temporary group, the sport federations, is mainly organisational engaged. They often focus on learning and organising the competition rather than social outcomes - if allowed to participate at all. The participation of a sport depends on the will of the core stakeholders, existing infrastructure and the interest of the host. Yet, there seems to be a general interest from the sport federations in participating in the events.

    Conclusion, Contribution, and Implication **

From an innovation theoretical perspective, SM-veckan seems established as an event considering several beneficiaries, while the preliminary results also indicate that the process has potential costs and entails creative as well as destructive processes.

The analysis shows that the main stakeholders of SM-veckan are all engaged albeit in different ways and to different degrees. The core stakeholders, the Swedish national public broadcaster and the Swedish sport confederation together with the host cities are defining for the continued development of SM-veckan as a popular event. Although the host cities are temporary stakeholders, their capacities and interests are taken very much into account, if not even taking the lead, when developing the event especially with regard to the social outcomes. The influence of the sport federations, the other temporary stakeholder, seems limited both in terms of organisation and socially.

The study has at least two implications:

    1. Regarding theory on event innovation: The original innovation was to combine several the national championships but the recent focus seems to be on making the event appealing. How should we understand this change? Is the later focus a series of new innovations or refinements of the original (cf. Schumpeter's idea that innovations should be analysed in a long-term perspective)?
    2. Regarding practical implications: Sport confederations seem to organise combined national tournaments to increase the attention around small sports. It appeals to the sport federations in Sweden and is potentially useful in other areas.

Western funding and its consequences for the Ugandan LGBT+ rights struggle: Negotiating community dynamics and activism during Pride 20222023In: Global LGBTQ Activism: Social Media, Digital Technologies, and Protest Mechanisms / [ed] Pain, Paromita, London: Routledge, 2023, p. 43-63Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Uganda gained international notoriety in 2009 for introducing one of the world’s harshest bills proposing the death penalty for homosexuality. Against the backdrop that the Ugandan LGBT+ community has enjoyed moral and financial support from international partners for more than a decade, this chapter examines and discusses the potential unintentional consequences of external and prolonged support of LGBT+ activism. Furthermore, unintended and unintentional consequences are likely to have fluctuated over time depending on domestic politics and international priorities. Through historical sources, the first part of the chapter traces the emergence of organized resistance against state-sanctioned homophobia in Uganda, as well as the entrance of international support to the community. The gala provided examples of how international funding has unintended consequences and potentially distorts intra-community relations. It is, however, also important to highlight that despite prolonged and pronounced donor dependency, Pride 2022 signaled a significant degree of community agency.

The Natural Resource Use Programme and a resilient countryside2023In: Ruralities and Regions in Transition: Book of Abstracts / [ed] Uppdrag Landsbygd, SLU, 2023, p. 65-65, article id 4.8Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We will present our project in an early stage of the research process. Our project investigates how the Natural Resource Use Programme in upper secondary school contributes to a resilient countryside. Recent societal challenges have shown that Swedish society is vulnerable in areas such as domestic food production.

Our project will study how social and economic sustainability are managed in relation to the natural resource use programme. Our study addresses individual as well as structural levels; students’ own perceptions; school curricula and education linked to these concepts; and register data of students’ participation in work and further studies. The project will use mixed methods (policy analysis, ethnography and quantitative analysis) to answer these research questions:How is the Natural Resource Use Programme constituted as socially important for skills maintenance and development in rural Sweden? How do students in the Natural Resource Use Programme consider their education, future careers, and working lives in the countryside? What educational pathways, income opportunities and career trajectories have been developed by students after attending the Natural Resource Use Programme and how have these changed over time for different ruralities?

The purpose of the project is to investigate the educational programme’s function in relation to skills maintenance and development, and to develop an understanding for the programme’s importance in relation to local rural environments as well as the everyday lives of individual students.

Facilitating children’s in-session involvement in child and family therapies: A dynamic framework of clinical practices.2023In: Psychotherapy, ISSN 0033-3204, E-ISSN 1939-1536Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Children’s in-session involvement in child and family therapies correlates with both positive and negative treatment outcomes. Thus, it is important to gain a better understanding of the clinical practices that facilitate children’s involvement in therapy sessions so that practitioners can employ them with greater precision. To address this need, we conducted a study to answer the following question: What clinical practices facilitate children’s in-session involvement in child and family therapies? The data consisted of 16 extant audiovisual recordings of child and family therapy sessions and 24 stimulated-recall interviews with the participants in the recordings. Following constructivist grounded theory and incorporating storyline as an additional analytical technique, we have constructed a framework consisting of four involvement-enhancing practices: managing time, staying relevant, adjusting intensity, and facilitating inclusion. Furthermore, by detailing some of the complex processes that practitioners navigate when they facilitate children’s involvement, our study adds a multilayered and dynamic dimension to the list of already established involvement facilitators. It may be used to moderate an overstandardized work culture that continues to characterize services that address children’s needs. The results may be applied to other institutional encounters, providing resonance beyond the analyzed therapy sessions.

Perspektiv på sexualitet i socialt arbete2023Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]
