    Logics, tensions and negotiations in the everyday life of a news-ranking algorithm2023Ingår i: Journalism - Theory, Practice & Criticism, ISSN 1464-8849, E-ISSN 1741-3001, Vol. 24, nr 7, s. 1518-1535Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article attends to tensions and negotiations surrounding the introduction and development of a news-ranking algorithm in a Swedish daily. Approaching algorithms as culture, being composed of collective human practices, the study emphasizes socio-institutional dynamics in the everyday life of the algorithm. The focus on tensions and negotiations is justified from an institutional perspective and operationalized through an analytical framework of logics. Empirically the study is based on interviews with 14 different in-house workers at the daily, journalists as well as programmers and market actors. The study shows that logics connected to both journalism and programming co-developed the news-ranking algorithm. Tensions and their negotiations around these logics contributed to its very development. One example is labeling of the algorithm as editor-led, allowing journalists to oversee some of its parameters. Social practices in the newsroom, such as Algorithm-Coffee, was also important for its development. In other words, different actors, tensions between them and how these were negotiated, co-constituted by the algorithm itself.

Multivariable prediction models of caries increment: a systematic review and critical appraisal.2023Ingår i: Systematic Reviews, E-ISSN 2046-4053, Vol. 12, nr 1, artikel-id 202Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Multivariable prediction models are used in oral health care to identify individuals with an increased likelihood of caries increment. The outcomes of the models should help to manage individualized interventions and to determine the periodicity of service. The objective was to review and critically appraise studies of multivariable prediction models of caries increment.

METHODS: Longitudinal studies that developed or validated prediction models of caries and expressed caries increment as a function of at least three predictors were included. PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science supplemented with reference lists of included studies were searched. Two reviewers independently extracted data using CHARMS (Critical Appraisal and Data Extraction for Systematic Reviews of Prediction Modelling Studies) and assessed risk of bias and concern regarding applicability using PROBAST (Prediction model Risk Of Bias ASessment Tool). Predictors were analysed and model performance was recalculated as estimated positive (LR +) and negative likelihood ratios (LR -) based on sensitivity and specificity presented in the studies included.

RESULTS: Among the 765 reports identified, 21 studies providing 66 prediction models fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Over 150 candidate predictors were considered, and 31 predictors remained in studies of final developmental models: caries experience, mutans streptococci in saliva, fluoride supplements, and visible dental plaque being the most common predictors. Predictive performances varied, providing LR + and LR - ranges of 0.78-10.3 and 0.0-1.1, respectively. Only four models of coronal caries and one root caries model scored LR + values of at least 5. All studies were assessed as having high risk of bias, generally due to insufficient number of outcomes in relation to candidate predictors and considerable uncertainty regarding predictor thresholds and measurements. Concern regarding applicability was low overall.

CONCLUSIONS: The review calls attention to several methodological deficiencies and the significant heterogeneity observed across the studies ruled out meta-analyses. Flawed or distorted study estimates lead to uncertainty about the prediction, which limits the models' usefulness in clinical decision-making. The modest performance of most models implies that alternative predictors should be considered, such as bacteria with acid tolerant properties.

Radiographic bone level and soft tissue dimensional changes following explantation of implants affected by peri-implantitis: A retrospective exploratory evaluation2023Ingår i: Clinical and Experimental Dental Research, E-ISSN 2057-4347Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: While the dimensional alteration of alveolar bone following tooth extraction have been extensively descripted in the literature, no information is available regarding potential hard and soft tissues changes following implant explantation.

AIM: To evaluate the radiographic bone healing and the horizontal and vertical soft tissue dimensional alterations at implant extraction alveoli, 6 months following implant explantation.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from 31 patients scheduled for extraction of one implant with persisting peri-implantitis despite treatment were analysed. Bone crest level changes and the extent of bone healing at the apical aspect of the implant socket were assessed on the radiographs prior and 6 months following explantation. Regression analyses assessed the impact of various predictors (e.g., bone crest level, presence/absence of buccal bone) on bone level changes. Fisher's exact probability test was applied to assess the difference in probability to have mucosa recession of ≥2 mm in the presence or absence of alveolar buccal bone.

RESULTS: A vertical bone loss of 0.8 mm (standard deviation [SD] = 1.3) of the peri-implant bone crest and a gain of 0.8 mm (SD = 1.1) from the bottom of the peri-implant defect were recorded. Complete healing was noted in the intact implant extraction socket (i.e., the part of the implant not affected by peri-implantitis). A reduction of 0.4 mm (SD = 0.7) of the alveolar mucosa height was recorded in concomitant with a decrease of 0.7 mm (SD = 0.8) of the mucosa width. These alterations were more pronounced in the absence of the alveolar buccal bone.

CONCLUSION: The results of the present explorative study indicated a decrease in the height and width of the alveolar soft and hard tissues following explantation of peri-implantitis affected implants, and these changes were more pronounced in the absence of the buccal bone wall. Nevertheless, the apical portion of the implant alveolus (the intact implant socket) tend to heal with no further bone loss.

Validation of a short version of the Lee fatigue scale in adults living in Norway: a cross-sectional population survey2023Ingår i: BMC Public Health, E-ISSN 1471-2458, Vol. 23, nr 1, artikel-id 2132Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Due to the nature of fatigue, a brief reliable measure of fatigue severity is needed. Thus, the aim of our study was to evaluate a short version of the Lee Fatigue Scale (LFS) in the Norwegian general population.

METHODS: This cross-sectional survey consists of a representative sample from the Norwegian population drawn by The National Population Register in Norway. The study is part of a larger study (NORPOP) aimed at collecting normative data from several questionnaires focused on health in adults living in Norway. Registered citizens between 18 and 94 years of age were randomly selected stratified by age, sex and geographic region. Of the 4971 respondents eligible for the study, 1792 (36%) responded to the survey. In addition to age and sex, we collected responses on a 5-item version of the LFS measuring current fatige severity. The psychometric properties focusing on internal structure and precision of the LFS items were analyzed by a Rasch rating scale model.

RESULTS: Complete LFS scores for analyses were available for 1767 adults. Women had higher LFS-scores than men, and adults < 55 years old had higher scores than older respondents. Our analysis of the LFS showed that the average category on each item advanced monotonically. Two of the five items demonstrated misfit, while the three other items demonstrated goodness-of-fit to the model and uni-dimensionality. Items #1 and #4 (tired and fatigue respectively) showed differential item functioning (DIF) by sex, but no items showed DIFs in relation to age. The separation index of the LFS 3-item scale showed that the sample could be separated into three different groups according to the respondents' fatigue levels. The LFS-3 raw scores correlated strongly with the Rasch measure from the three items. The core dimensions in these individual items were very similarly expressed in the Norwegian language version and this may be a threat to the cultural-related or language validity of a short version of the LFS using these particular items.

CONCLUSIONS: The study provides validation of a short LFS 3-item version for estimating fatigue in the general population.

Two- and three-piece implants to boost data generation in preclinical in vivo research: A short technical report2023Ingår i: Clinical and Experimental Dental Research, E-ISSN 2057-4347Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this technical report is to present two novel experimental implant designs to boost data generation in preclinical in vivo research. Specifically, the report describes the rationale and the components of (1) a two-piece experimental implant suitable for a small animal platform (e.g., the rabbit femur/tibial epiphysis model), consisting of a threaded apical- and a coronal cylindrical piece, which is intended for collecting two types of biomechanical data, and (2) a three-piece experimental implant suitable for a large animal platform (e.g., the mini-pig mandible model), consisting of an apical "wound chamber", which allows the collection of histological/histomorphometrical data, and a middle threaded and coronal cylindrical piece, which also allow the collection of two types of biomechanical data. The increased volume of information generated from a single experiment in a small animal platform, using the proposed two-piece implant design, may assist in a more qualified decision-making process, on whether it is relevant to proceed to further assessment using a large animal platform. Furthermore, the increased volume of information generated in a single animal experiment either in a small or large animal platform, using the proposed two- and three-piece implants, respectively, likely decreases the number of animals otherwise needed for collecting the same information with standard one-piece implants and, thus, contributes to the reduction/refinement elements of the 3R principle.

using a novel protocol mimicking mucosal tolerance mechanisms represent a potential therapeutic cell platform for induction of immune tolerance.2023Ingår i: Frontiers in Immunology, ISSN 1664-3224, E-ISSN 1664-3224, Vol. 14, artikel-id 1045183Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Dendritic cells (DCs) are mediators between innate and adaptive immunity and vital in initiating and modulating antigen-specific immune responses. The most important site for induction of tolerance is the gut mucosa, where TGF-β, retinoic acid, and aryl hydrocarbon receptors collaborate in DCs to induce a tolerogenic phenotype. To mimic this, a novel combination of compounds – the synthetic aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonist IGN-512 together with TGF-β and retinoic acid – was developed to create a platform technology for induction of tolerogenic DCs intended for treatment of several conditions caused by unwanted immune activation. These in vitro-generated cells, designated ItolDCs, are phenotypically characterized by their low expression of co-stimulatory and activating molecules along with high expression of tolerance-associated markers such as ILT3, CD103, and LAP, and a weak pro-inflammatory cytokine profile. When co-cultured with T cells and/or B cells, ItolDC-cultures contain higher frequencies of CD25+Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs), CD49b+LAG3+ ‘type 1 regulatory (Tr1) T cells, and IL-10-producing B cells and are less T cell stimulatory compared to cultures with matured DCs. Factor VIII (FVIII) and tetanus toxoid (TT) were used as model antigens to study ItolDC antigen-loading. ItolDCs can take up FVIII, process, and present FVIII peptides on HLA-DR. By loading both ItolDCs and mDCs with TT, antigen-specific T cell proliferation was observed. Cryo-preserved ItolDCs showed a stable tolerogenic phenotype that was maintained after stimulation with LPS, CD40L, or a pro-inflammatory cocktail. Moreover, exposure to other immune cells did not negatively impact ItolDCs’ expression of tolerogenic markers. In summary, a novel protocol was developed supporting the generation of a stable population of human DCs in vitro that exhibited a tolerogenic phenotype with an ability to increase proportions of induced regulatory T and B cells in mixed cultures. This protocol has the potential to constitute the base of a tolDC platform for inducing antigen-specific tolerance in disorders caused by undesired antigen-specific immune cell activation.

Risk of ankylosis of avulsed teeth immediately replanted or stored under favorable storage conditions before replantation: A long-term clinical study2023Ingår i: Dental Traumatology, ISSN 1600-4469, E-ISSN 1600-9657Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND/AIM: There are few long-term clinical follow-up studies on human teeth replanted immediately or after storage in a suitable storage medium prior to replantation. This study aimed to assess the risk of ankylosis in avulsed human teeth replanted immediately or after storage in physiological media for a short time.

MATERIAL: Data from 116 patients with 145 replanted avulsed permanent teeth were selected from a comprehensive dental trauma database in Copenhagen University Hospital. The following teeth were selected: Group 1 comprised 36 teeth replanted immediately (dry time <6 min; wet time <6 min). Group 2 comprised 61 teeth replanted after physiologic storage media (saliva and saline) (dry time <6 min; wet time >5 min; wet time ranged from 7 to 170 min, and mean wet time was 59 min). Group 3 (control) included 48 teeth replanted after dry storage (dry time > 60 min).

METHOD: Clinical and radiographic registrations were carried out according to a standardized protocol; follow-up ranged from 7 months to 23 years. Ankylosis was diagnosed by percussion test and radiographs and related to the conditions prior to replantation and stage of root development.

RESULTS: The overall risk of ankylosis was 17.2% [95% CI: 4.61; 29.79] for immediately replanted teeth, 55.3% [95% CI: 42.54; 68.00] for teeth stored in physiologic media before replantation, and 85.7% [95% CI: 75.70; 95.73] for teeth stored dry more than 1 h. Mature teeth showed a significantly higher risk of ankylosis than immature teeth.

CONCLUSION: This clinical long-term study has verified earlier experimental studies showing that immediate reimplantation has the lowest risk of ankylosis. Physiologic storage media are good alternatives that also reduce the risk of ankylosis compared to dry storage, where ankylosis is more likely although not always seen. Mature teeth are significantly more likely to develop ankylosis.

Phase behavior of soybean phosphatidylcholine and glycerol dioleate in hydrated and dehydrated states studied by small-angle X-ray scattering2023Ingår i: Soft Matter, ISSN 1744-683X, E-ISSN 1744-6848, Vol. 19, nr 43, s. 8305-8317Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Soybean phosphatidylcholine (SPC) and glycerol dioleate (GDO) form liquid crystal nanostructures in aqueous environments, and their mixtures can effectively encapsulate active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). When used in a subcutaneous environment, the liquid crystalline matrix gradually hydrates and degrades in the tissue whilst slowly releasing the API. Hydration dependent SPC/GDO phase behavior is complex, non-trivial, and still not fully understood. A deeper understanding of this system is important for controlling its function in drug delivery applications. The phase behavior of the mixture of SPC/GDO/water was studied as a function of hydration and lipid ratio. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to identify space groups in liquid crystalline phases and to get detailed structural information on the isotropic reverse micellar phase. The reported pseudo ternary phase diagram includes eight different phases and numerous multiphase regions in a thermodynamically consistent way. For mixtures with SPC as the predominant component, the system presents a reverse hexagonal, lamellar and R3m phase. For mixtures with lower SPC concentrations, reverse cubic (Fd3m and Pm3n) as well as intermediate and isotropic micellar phases were identified. By modeling the SAXS data using a core–shell approach, the properties of the isotropic micellar phase were studied in detail as a function of concentration. Moreover, SAXS analysis of other phases revealed new structural features in relation to lipid–water interactions. The new improved ternary phase diagram offers valuable insight into the complex phase behavior of the SPC/GDO system. The detailed structural information is important for understanding what APIs can be incorporated in the liquid crystal structure.

Towards molecularly imprinted polymers that respond to and capture phosphorylated tyrosine epitopes using fluorescent bis-urea and bis-imidazolium receptors.2023Ingår i: Journal of materials chemistry. Abstract [en]

Early detection of cancer is essential for successful treatment and improvement in patient prognosis. Deregulation of post-translational modifications (PTMs) of proteins, especially phosphorylation, is present in many types of cancer. Therefore, the development of materials for the rapid sensing of low abundant phosphorylated peptides in biological samples can be of great therapeutic value. In this work, we have synthesised fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymers (fMIPs) for the detection of the phosphorylated tyrosine epitope of ZAP70, a cancer biomarker. The polymers were grafted as nanometer-thin shells from functionalised submicron-sized silica particles using a reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerisation. Employing the combination of fluorescent urea and intrinsically cationic bis-imidazolium receptor cross-linkers, we have developed fluorescent sensory particles, showing an imprinting factor (IF) of 5.0. The imprinted polymer can successfully distinguish between phosphorylated and non-phosphorylated tripeptides, reaching lower micromolar sensitivity in organic solvents and specifically capture unprotected peptide complements in a neutral buffer. Additionally, we have shown the importance of assessing the influence of counterions present in the MIP system on the imprinting process and final material performance. The potential drawbacks of using epitopes with protective groups, which can co-imprint with targeted functionality, are also discussed.

Effect of Drilling Preparation on Immediately Loaded Implants: An In Vivo Study in Sheep2023Ingår i: International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants, ISSN 0882-2786, E-ISSN 1942-4434, Vol. 38, nr 3, s. 607-618Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To determine the biologic and biomechanical effects of two implant drilling protocols on the cortical bone around implants subjected to immediate loading. Materials and Methods: A total of 48 implants were inserted into the mandibles of six sheep following one of two drilling protocols: undersized preparation (US; n = 24) and nonundersized preparation (NUS; n = 24). Immediately after implant insertion, an abutment was placed on each implant and 36 implants were subjected to 10 sessions of dynamic vertical loads (1,500 cycles, 1 Hz) of 25 N or 50 N. Insertion torque value (ITV) was recorded at implant installation. Resonance frequency analysis (RFA) was measured at implant insertion and at each loading session. Fluorochrome was administered at day 17, and the animals were euthanized after 5 weeks. The removal torque values (RTVs) were measured, and samples underwent histomorphometric, mu CT (microcomputed tomography), and fluorescence image acquisition analyses. The bone volume density (BV/TV), bone-to-implant contact (BIC), bone area fraction occupancy (BAFO), and fluorochrome stained bone surface (MS) were calculated. A linear mixed model analysis was performed, and Pearson paired correlation was calculated. Results: Five implants from the NUS group failed, with a mean ITV of 8.8 Ncm and an RFA value of 57. The mean ITVs for US group and NUS group were 80.5 (+/- 14) Ncm and 45.9 (+/- 25) Ncm, respectively (P < .001). No differences were noted in the RFA values from the time of implant insertion until the end of the study. No differences in RTV, BV/TV, BAFO, or MS were observed between the groups. Intense new bone formation took place in the NUS group implants that were subjected to load. Conclusions: Undersized preparation of cortical bone ensured a greater BIC compared to a nonundersized preparation. Moreover, this study demonstrated that immediate loading did not interfere with the osseointegration process, but loading induced intense new bone formation in the NUS group. It is not recommended to immediately load the implants when the clinically perceived primary stability is lower than an ITV of 10 Ncm and an RFA value of 60.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we treat VR as a new writing space in the long tradition of inscription. Constructing Virtual Reality (VR) narratives can then be understood as a process of inscribing text in space, and consuming them as a process of "reading" the space. Our research objective is to explore the meaning-making process afforded by spatial narratives-to test whether VR facilitates traditional ways of weaving complex, multiple narrative strands and provides new opportunities for leveraging space. We argue that, as opposed to the linear space of a printed book, a VR narrative space is similar to the physical space of a museum and can be analyzed on three distinct levels: (1) the architecture of the space itself, (2) the collection, and (3) the individual artifacts. To provide a deeper context for designing VR narratives, we designed and implemented a testbed called RealityMedia to explore digital remediations of traditional narrative devices and the spatial, immersive, and interactive affordances of VR. We conducted task-based user study using a VR headset and follow-up qualitative interviews with 20 participants. Our results highlight how the three semantic levels (space, collection, and artifacts) can work together to constitute meaningful narrative experiences in VR.

Associations between screening for functional jaw disturbances and patient reported outcomes on jaw limitations and oral behaviors2023Ingår i: Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice, ISSN 1532-3382, E-ISSN 1532-3390, Vol. 23, nr 3, artikel-id 101888Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

ObjectivesTemporomandibular disorders (TMDs) is a collective term for pain and functional disturbances related to the jaw muscles and the temporomandibular joint. In contrast to screening for orofacial pain, knowledge is limited on the association between patient-reported outcomes and screening for joint-related functional jaw disturbances. Therefore, our aim was to evaluate the association between a screening question for functional jaw disturbances, and disease-specific out-come measures for functional jaw limitations and oral behaviors.MethodsThis study included 299 individuals (201 women; 20-69 years, median 37.0) in a general population sample from Vasterbotten, Northern Sweden in 2014. A single screening question for functional jaw disturbances "Does your jaw lock or become stuck once a week or more?" was used to categorize individuals as cases or controls. Patient-reported outcomes on functional jaw disturbances were assessed with the 20-item jaw functional limitation scale (JFLS-20) and oral behaviors with the 21-item Oral Behaviors Checklist (OBC-21).ResultsThe strongest predictive probability to have a positive screening outcome was functional jaw limitations related to mobility (AUC(boot) = 0.78, 95 CI:0.71-0.86, P < .001), followed by limitations related to communication (AUC(boot) = 0.74, 95 CI:0.63-0.80, P < .001) and mastication (AUC(boot) = 0.73, 95 CI:0.66-0.81, P < .001). The frequency of oral behaviors was not significantly associated with a positive screening outcome (AUC(boot) = 0.65, 95 CI:0.55-0.72, P = .223).ConclusionsSelf-reported functional limitations, but not oral behaviors, are strongly associated with a single screening question for frequent functional jaw disturbances. This finding provides support for incorporating a question on jaw catching/locking once a week or more in screening instruments for TMDs.

Risk Factors Associated with Failure and Technical Complications of Implant-Supported Single Crowns: A Retrospective Study2023Ingår i: Medicina, ISSN 1010-660X, E-ISSN 1648-9144, Vol. 59, nr 9, artikel-id 1603Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background and Objectives: Implant-supported single crowns have become a routine approach for the replacement of missing single teeth, being considered as one of the most common ways of rehabilitation when adjacent teeth are healthy. The present retrospective study aimed to investigate the risk factors possibly associated with failure and technical complications of implant-supported single crowns and their supporting implants. Materials and Methods: Patients treated at one faculty (2009-2019) were considered for inclusion. Complications investigated included ceramic fracture/chipping, crown loss of retention/mobility, crown failure/fracture, loosening/loss/fracture of prosthetic screw, and implant failure/fracture. Any condition/situation that led to the removal/replacement of crowns (implant failure not included) was considered prosthesis failure. Univariate/multivariate Cox regression models were used to evaluate the associations between clinical covariates and failure. Results: 278 patients (358 crowns) were included. Mean & PLUSMN; SD follow-up was 56.5 & PLUSMN; 29.7 months. Seven implants (after a mean of 76.5 & PLUSMN; 43.7 months) and twenty crowns (21.3 & PLUSMN; 23.5 months) failed. The cumulative survival rate (CSR) for crowns was 93.5% after 5, remaining at 92.2% between 6 and 11 years. The most common reasons for crown failure were porcelain large fracture (n = 6), crown repeatedly loose (n = 6), and porcelain chipping (n = 5). Men and probable bruxism were identified in the Cox regression model as being associated with crown failure. The most common observed technical complications were mobility of the crown and chipping of the ceramic material, with the latter being observed even in crowns manufactured of monolithic zirconia. Cases with at least one technical complication (not considering loss of screw hole sealing) were more common among probable bruxers than in non-bruxers (p = 0.002). Cases of ceramic chipping were more common among bruxers than in non-bruxers (p = 0.014, log-rank test). Conclusions: Probable bruxism and patient's sex (men) were factors associated with a higher risk of failure of implant-supported single crowns.

Sexuality is not age-related: an interview study2023Ingår i: Sexual and Relationship Therapy, ISSN 1468-1994, E-ISSN 1468-1749Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Increased knowledge of how sexuality is expressed in older persons may create opportunities for healthcare professionals to perform care according to a person-centered approach. To describe older people's experiences of sexuality concerning aging, a qualitative study was conducted. Eight persons aged 60 and above were interviewed, and the obtained data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings revealed that the participants were certain of being sexually active as they got older. Awareness of what old age can bring regarding illness and increased medication intake was clear, alongside the importance of discussing sexuality with friends or a partner. Age was not seen as an obstacle to continuously being sexually active, and new ways to maintain intimacy and sexuality were identified. According to our results sexuality in older people is about well-being and intimate relationships. Creating opportunities for a trusting, caring relationship can strengthen older people's sexual health. Healthcare professionals must, therefore, make possibilities for trustful relationships to support and discuss sexuality with older people. In this study, eight persons aged 60 and above were interviewed about their experiences of sexuality concerning aging. They described sexuality in terms of well-being and intimate relationships and spoke about the need for support and discussions about sexuality in meetings with healthcare personnel.

Health and quality of life among women after participation in a CBPR-informed physical activity intervention: with a pandemic perspective.2023Ingår i: Scientific Reports, E-ISSN 2045-2322, Vol. 13, nr 1, artikel-id 17972Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The lack of culturally and contextually oriented interventions promoting physical activity (PA) has led to increased physical inactivity among women living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Sweden. In this study one such intervention informed by community-based participatory research (CBPR) has been evaluated among 34 women from a disadvantaged neighbourhood before and during COVID-19. Health-related quality of life (HRQOL), behavioural and biomedical outcomes were assessed directly prior and post-intervention, followed by evaluations at 6-months and 18-months follow-up during COVID-19. The results revealed that HRQOL, particularly psychological, social, and environmental health significantly increased post-intervention compared to prior to intervention but reversed back at 6-months follow-up. Perceived health satisfaction and environmental health increased at 18-months follow-up during COVID-19. Participation in PA improved post-intervention and at 6-months follow-up. Everyday activities and fruit and vegetable intake continued to increase through all timepoints. Systolic blood pressure significantly decreased post-intervention and 6-months follow-up; blood flow rate increased significantly at all timepoints. Overall, the findings underscores the potential effectiveness of CBPR approaches in promoting and sustaining healthy lifestyles, even during acute situations such as the COVID-19. It may even serve as a future model for promoting health and addressing health disparities in similar groups.

"I Dread the Heart Surgery but it Keeps My Child Alive"-Experiences of Parents of Children with Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Anomalies during the Assessment for Cardiac Reoperation2023Ingår i: Congenital Heart Disease, ISSN 1747-079X, E-ISSN 1747-0803, Vol. 18, nr 3, s. 349-359Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Parents of children with complex right ventricular outflow tract ( RVOT) anomalies are confronted with their child's need for heart surgery early in life and repeated reoperations later on. Preoperative assessment needs to be performed whenever an indication for reoperation is suspected. The aim was to illuminate the experiences of parents of children diagnosed with RVOT anomalies, in particular, how they experience their child's heart disease and everyday life during the assessment and after the decision on whether to perform a reoperation. Method: Individual interviews (n = 27) were conducted with nine parents on three occasions between 2014 and 2016 and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in the following five main coexisting themes: The heart surgery keeps my child alive illuminates parents' experiences during and after the assessment and emphasizes that heart surgery, although dreaded, is central for their child's survival; Everyday struggles illuminates the different struggles parents had to face to ensure that their child would be in the best possible condition; the remaining three themes, Unconditional love, Trust in life, and Togetherness, illuminate the ways in which the parents gained inner strength and confidence in their everyday lives. Conclusion: Although the parents were grateful for the assessment and had learned to navigate among the fears it aroused, they experienced several distressing situations during the assessment process that should be addressed. By inviting both the parents and their child to participate in the child's care, individualized support can take into account the needs of both parents and child.

    Sedimentation of a starch microsphere: What is usually missed and why?2023Ingår i: Heliyon, E-ISSN 2405-8440, Vol. 9, nr 10, artikel-id e20257Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Gravimetric sedimentation is known as a relatively simple method of determining density of spherical particles. When the method is applied to water-swollen starch microparticles of about submillimeter sizes, it becomes evident that a careful selection of the experimental setup parameters is needed for producing accurate testing results. The main reason for this is that the mean particle density is very close to the density of water, and therefore, a dynamic model accounting for the so-called Bassett history force should be employed for describing the unsteady accelerating particle settling. A main novelty of this study consists in deriving a priori estimates for the settling time and distance.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Improving relationship dynamics positively impacts both partners’ health among couples. However, few studies have investigated sexual and gender minority (SGM) couples’ relationship goals and their experiences toward achieving them.

Purpose: The present study investigated SGM couples’ experiences that centered on them working toward or maintaining their relationship goals over time.

Method: From a cohort study with SGM couples, a purposive sample of 40 couples was selected and interviewed over Zoom. Interviews were individual-level, semi-structured, and recorded. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the transcripts.

Results: Approximately half of the 40 couples identified as gay male couples, a third as lesbian couples, and about one-fifth as queer or gender minority couples. Top three reported relationship goals were 1) improving communication, 2) working on finances, and 3) enhancing intimacy. Feeling emotionally connected, career-related decisions, and improving sexual satisfaction were other commonly reported goals. Overall, most partners felt they made progress toward at least 1 of their 3 relationship goals within the prior 6 months. However, perceived relationship goal progress varied extensively between partners across couple groups. Facilitator-related themes about relationship goal progress included dyadic efforts, having a support system including professional help, and planning. Barrier-related themes included nonexistent or minimal effort, different communication styles, employment and economical struggles, and competing life and health priorities.

Conclusion(s): Dyadic efforts and support systems were key toward someone working toward or maintaining their relationships goals. Findings suggest key relationship functioning areas to target in a future multiple health behavior change intervention for SGM couples.

Mental wellbeing in swedish university students: Protective and risk factors in a crosssectional study2023Ingår i: International Journal of Behavioral Medicine, ISSN 1070-5503, E-ISSN 1532-7558, Vol. 30, s. S66-S67, artikel-id 302Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: Mental wellbeing is a fundamental aspect of the broader notion of quality of life. Little is known about the mental wellbeing of university students in general and Swedish university students in particular. As emerging adults, university students typically experience substantial changes to their living conditions, relationships, and academic stress, and depression and anxiety are prospectively associated with lower academic achievement at the end of the first year.

Methods: Data from five cross-sectional cohorts (n = 7423), collected between spring 2020 and spring 2022, were compared descriptively, regarding sociodemographic factors, lifetime and past 30-day symptoms of mental health problems, experiences of bullying, feeling loved and measures of well-being. Linear regression identified protective factors for wellbeing according to the Short Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (SWEMWBS), and risk factors for lower wellbeing.

Results: Participants were > 70% women, 24–27 years old, 75–83% born in Sweden. About one-third had experienced physical bullying at school and about 70% felt loved and cared for. About two-thirds had medium levels of wellbeing, with one-third having low levels and about 5% having high levels. Protective factors for wellbeing included older age, male gender, feeling loved most of the time, and the grit construct. Risk factors included being an international student, non-heterosexual sexual orientation, having symptoms of depression or anxiety most of the time, and experiencing effort/reward imbalance.

Conclusions: A large proportion of students experience less than optimal wellbeing. Interventions to enhance positive, nurturing relationships and reinforce grit-related factors could support students in this challenging period of life.

Do Moral Values Moderate the Relationship Between Immigrant-School Concentration and Violent Offending?: A Cross-Level Interaction Analysis of Self-Reported Violence in Sweden2023Ingår i: Deviant behavior, ISSN 0163-9625, E-ISSN 1521-0456Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The study examines whether school-level immigrant concentration is related to students' involvement in violence, and whether students' moral values moderate the relationship between immigrant concentration and violence. The study is based on six nationally representative school surveys conducted by the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention between 1999 and 2011, with a combined sample of 38,711 adolescents. We have combined different surveys to create one large pooled data set to evaluate segregation effects at the school level. Multilevel linear probability models are used to examine cross-level interaction effects. This study shows that contextual effects impact students differently, and that the relationship between immigrant concentration and violence is considerably stronger for adolescents with weak personal moral values. The paper provides empirical support for the differential vulnerability hypothesis. Policy and practice would benefit from a focus on the further development of programs and interventions that target personal moral values, not least in schools.

To obtain a fundamental understanding of mechanisms of hydrogen embrittlement (HE) and its prevention in advanced high-strength steels containing novel nanoscale mixed-metal precipitates, it is necessary to study local microstructure, H trapping, and crack path with new multiscale experimental and simulation approach. Spatially resolved hydrogen mapping via SKPFM is used together with investigation of the crack path using highresolution EBSD and HMPT, and global trapping behavior of the alloys by TDS. These results are combined with newly introduced method to elucidate real-time distribution of hydrogen in the alloy using high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction (HES-XRD). Mixed-metal precipitates improves HE resistance of the alloy, due to nature of the trapping sites, e.g. irreversible H-trapping by carbon vacancies inside novel nanoprecipitates and high total length of PAGBs. This is because of lower possibility of build-up of critical local hydrogen content at PAGBs for intergranular hydrogen-assisted cracking due to hydrogen-enhanced decohesion mechanism. Less weakly trapped hydrogen also reduces frequency of dislocation activation and enhanced dislocation slip in {011} slip plane due to hydrogen-enhanced localized plasticity in regions with affinity for transgranular hydrogen-assisted cracking at lower local hydrogen content. Direct evidence of carbon vacancies in novel nanoprecipitates is observed for the first time via HAADF-STEM.

    Students in sweden during the covid-19-pandemic: Behaviors, self-efficacy, and mental health2023Ingår i: International Journal of Behavioral Medicine, ISSN 1070-5503, E-ISSN 1532-7558, Vol. 30, s. S70-S70, artikel-id 338Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

    Background:

During the COVID-19-pandemic, Sweden introduced voluntary public health recommendations. In addition, Swedish higher education institutions shifted to remote teaching to reduce contagion. For the majority of students, this led to changes relating to several daily behaviors, and study routines, which might impact mental health.

    Purpose:

This study investigates compliance with recommendations, COVID-19 symptoms, academic self-efficacy, and mental health in students in higher education in Sweden

    Method:

Self-reports were collected through online questionnaires from students at higher education institutions across Sweden (N: 4495; 71% women; mean-age: 26.5 years). These were analyzed using multinomial regressions taking a Bayesian approach.

    Results:

Compliance with recommendations ranged from about 70 to 96 percent, with women and older students reporting higher compliance. Most of those with COVID-19 symptoms reported having mild to moderate symptoms (30%). Mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms in significant others were associated with symptoms of contagion but not with study capacity or mental health. In contrast, over 80% reported effects, mainly negative, on both academic self-efficacy and mental health.

    Conclusions:

Students largely followed voluntary recommendations, indicating no need of coercive measures. Still, many reported negative effects on academic self-efficacy and mental health thus raising concerns for enduring effects. Digital interventions boosting study skills and mental health could be a key for providing accessible support to all at reasonable costs.

Facilitating children’s in-session involvement in child and family therapies: A dynamic framework of clinical practices.2023Ingår i: Psychotherapy, ISSN 0033-3204, E-ISSN 1939-1536Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Children’s in-session involvement in child and family therapies correlates with both positive and negative treatment outcomes. Thus, it is important to gain a better understanding of the clinical practices that facilitate children’s involvement in therapy sessions so that practitioners can employ them with greater precision. To address this need, we conducted a study to answer the following question: What clinical practices facilitate children’s in-session involvement in child and family therapies? The data consisted of 16 extant audiovisual recordings of child and family therapy sessions and 24 stimulated-recall interviews with the participants in the recordings. Following constructivist grounded theory and incorporating storyline as an additional analytical technique, we have constructed a framework consisting of four involvement-enhancing practices: managing time, staying relevant, adjusting intensity, and facilitating inclusion. Furthermore, by detailing some of the complex processes that practitioners navigate when they facilitate children’s involvement, our study adds a multilayered and dynamic dimension to the list of already established involvement facilitators. It may be used to moderate an overstandardized work culture that continues to characterize services that address children’s needs. The results may be applied to other institutional encounters, providing resonance beyond the analyzed therapy sessions.

Effects of premolar extraction and orthodontic treatment in adolescents - a retrospective cephalometric study2023Ingår i: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, ISSN 0001-6357, E-ISSN 1502-3850Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: To evaluate the cephalometric effects of premolar extraction on skeletal and dental parameters, and on the soft tissues, in patients subsequently treated with fixed appliances. Prevalence and severity of external apical root resorption due to premolar extraction were also examined.Materials and methods: The dental records of 79 patients treated with fixed appliances were retrieved (groups: extraction, n = 19; non-extraction, n = 60). Pre- and post-treatment statuses of skeletal, dentoalveolar, and soft tissue variables were analyzed on lateral cephalograms to determine change. Periapical radiographs of the maxillary incisors were assessed for external apical root resorption using the Levander & Malmgren index. The t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, chi-squared test, and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to analyze the data. Significance was set at p < .05.Results: Changes in the protrusion and proclination of the incisors and in lip position were significantly different between the groups. Prevalence of external apical root resorption in the two groups was similar. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that extraction therapy affects dentoalveolar traits but not jaw position, nor the risk of root resorption, in patients treated with fixed appliances

Chemical abundances of the young inner-disc open cluster NGC 6705 observed by APOGEE: sodium-rich and not α-enhanced2023Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, ISSN 0035-8711, E-ISSN 1365-2966, Vol. 526, nr 2, s. 2378-2393Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Previous results in the literature have found the young inner-disc open cluster NGC 6705 to be mildly alpha-enhanced. We examined this possibility via an independent chemical abundance analysis for 11 red-giant members of NGC 6705. The analysis is based on near-infrared APOGEE spectra and relies on LTE calculations using spherical model atmospheres and radiative transfer. We find a mean cluster metallicity of [Fe / H] = +0.13 +/- 0.04, indicating that NGC 6705 is metal-rich, as may be expected for a young inner-disc cluster. The mean alpha-element abundance relative to iron is , which is not at odds with expectations from general Galactic abundance trends. NGC 6705 also provides important probes for studying stellar mixing, given its turn-off mass of M similar to 3.3M(circle dot). Its red giants have low C-12 abundances ([C-12/Fe] = -0.16) and enhanced N-14 abundances ([N-14/Fe] = +0.51), which are key signatures of the first dredge-up on the red giant branch. An additional signature of dredge-up was found in the Na abundances, which are enhanced by [Na/Fe] = +0.29, with a very small non-LTE correction. The O-16 and Al abundances are found to be near-solar. All of the derived mixing-sensitive abundances are in agreement with stellar models of approximately 3.3M(circle dot) evolving along the red giant branch and onto the red clump. As found in young open clusters with similar metallicities, NGC 6705 exhibits a mild excess in the s-process element cerium with [Ce/Fe] = +0.13 +/- 0.07.

The self-perceived impact of sexual abuse on daily life and general health - an issue to consider in dental care2023Ingår i: Dental Traumatology, ISSN 1600-4469, E-ISSN 1600-9657Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background/Aim: To analyse, from the perspective of adults with a history of sexual abuse, the impact of the experience on their general health and well-being.Material and Methods: The participants comprised 12 strategically selected informants (10 women), aged 19-56; all sexually abused during child- and/or adulthood. They were interviewed in-depth and encouraged to describe the impact of the sexual abuse on their daily lives. The consequences of sexual abuse on oral health have previously been reported. The interviews were recorded digitally, transcribed verbatim and analysed according to qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. Results: The overall theme illustrating the latent content was Sexual abuse experience-limiting long-term consequences, always present in body and mind. The first category covering the manifest content was 'A lost foothold', with two subcategories: (i) emotional repercussions and (ii) physical health repercussions. The second category was 'The significance of distance to trauma', with two subcategories (i) keeping a distance and tending to escape and (ii) processing the trauma experience-a struggle towards balance. Conclusions: A history of sexual abuse cannot be understood in isolation: the long-term repercussions pervade daily life. However, after disclosure of the abuse and processing the trauma, it is possible to ameliorate some of the negative effects. In this context, the dental setting emerges as a potentially important venue for disclosure as almost every person, sooner or later, visits the dentist.

    Identification of caries-active individuals in longitudinal data a methodological study using a national registry2023Ingår i: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, ISSN 0001-6357, E-ISSN 1502-3850, s. 1-6Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

ObjectiveThe aim was to identify caries active individuals among adults by using a trajectory model of longitudinal data from the Swedish national registry (SKaPa) and comparing them with published data from the Dunedin cohort.Materials and methodsData from two different age groups (30- and 40-year-olds) followed for 10 years were retrieved from SKaPa and were compared with published longitudinal birth-cohort data from the Dunedin study. Using the trajectory model, the subjects were divided into three different trajectories according to their caries development over time (i.e. high, 15%; moderate, 45%; low, 40%).ResultsCaries experience, as measured by mean decayed, missing, and filled surfaces (DMFS) index, revealed significant differences among the three trajectories in both age groups. The patterns were similar to those observed in the Dunedin cohort. The mean increase in DMFS during the 10-year follow-up period from SKaPa was significantly higher for the high trajectories in both age groups compared with the moderate and low trajectories.ConclusionsThe method using three trajectories for presentation of caries experience over time, may be a useful tool to identify subjects with different disease activities. Identification of subjects in the high caries experience trajectory may increase the possibility to explore and evaluate more effective caries prevention for this group in the future.

Translation, cultural adaptation, and psychometric testing of the supportive care needs survey for partners and caregivers for swedish family members of persons diagnosed with colorectal cancer2023Ingår i: Journal of patient-reported outcomes, E-ISSN 2509-8020, Vol. 7, nr 1, artikel-id 100Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosis globally and is increasing in both incidence and prevalence. Despite evidence showing that family members of persons diagnosed with cancer have supportive care needs, no validated questionnaire measuring the needs of family members of persons diagnosed with CRC exists in Swedish. Thus, the objective of the present study was to translate, culturally adapt, and evaluate the psychometric properties the Supportive Care Needs Survey - Partners and Caregivers 45.

Methods: The translation and cultural adaptation followed a systematic yet iterative process. Firstly, the questionnaire was translated using a forward-backward approach. Secondly, face and content validity and comprehensibility were evaluated by two expert panels of colorectal cancer specialist nurses and family members, respectively. Lastly, the psychometric properties, validity, and reliability of the translated questionnaire were evaluated among 45 Swedish family members of persons diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

Results: The face, content, and construct validity of the translated questionnaire were evaluated as satisfying. Moreover, psychometric evaluations showed high data quality and satisfactory internal consistency. However, the results also revealed unsolved issues regarding relevance, targeting, and internal consistency, as well as a probable scaling failure.

Conclusion: The translated and adapted questionnaire can be used to identify family members unmet needs of support throughout the colorectal cancer trajectory. The questionnaire showed promising validity and reliability in the target population. However, it needs to be further evaluated in a larger sample, preferably involving factor analysis and stability over time.

Plain language summary: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnose globally. At times of cancer, also the health and wellbeing of the surrounding family members is negatively affected. As a result, family members of persons diagnosed with cancer report that they too need support. Still, no validated questionnaire that enable measurement of family members needs of support throughout the colorectal cancer trajectory existed in Swedish. Thus, the present study undertook the process of translation of a questionnaire from English to Swedish. Thereto, evaluated it among Swedish family members of persons diagnosed with colorectal cancer. The evaluation showed a successful translation and the translated questionnaire appeared reliable and useful for measuring the family members´ needs of support throughout the colorectal cancer trajectory. However, it requires further evaluation.

Adult migrants' voices about learning and using Swedish at work placements in basic language education2023Ingår i: Studies in the Education of Adults, ISSN 0266-0830, E-ISSN 1478-9833Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present study was to contribute knowledge about how adult L2 learners perceived their possibilities to use and develop the target language (Swedish) when formal language teaching was combined with placements. Situated in the context of Swedish for Immigrants (SFI), the study drew inspiration from action research and ethnographic methodology. A thematic analysis was conducted underpinned by the systemic-functional linguistic concepts of field, tenor and mode. The findings showed that the students highly valued interaction with L1 Swedish speakers outside of the classroom. Several of the students described rich opportunities to interact socially, which, however, also entailed anxiety about their status as L2 speakers. A few of the students reported accessing field-specific language and literacy practices that aligned with their current career goals. However, students with placements relating to kitchen, garage and warehouse work voiced feeling isolated and having little opportunity for social interaction. While students in the first of two course instances found it difficult to discuss and exemplify language they had learnt, a vocabulary assignment developed for the second course instance facilitated discussions about placement-related words and expressions. Implications for teaching are discussed, including using authentic examples of workplace discourse as preparation for placement visits.

Unpacking the unequal privileges within transnational lifestyle relocation: Swedish lifestyle migrants' advantages and challenges in the Spanish housing market2023Ingår i: Population, Space and Place, ISSN 1544-8444, E-ISSN 1544-8452Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Lifestyle relocation is a highly privileged form of mobility. However, the extent of such privilege needs to be addressed theoretically and empirically in countries such as Spain where lifestyle migration is rising. This article dissects the extent of such privilege by analyzing the economic advantages and challenges that different social groups have when acquiring properties for lifestyle reasons. By lifestyle reasons we understand here a mix of economic, leisure and life change motivations underlying lifestyle migrants' property acquisition. To explore the unequal advantages and challenges faced by lifestyle migrants, we explore the variegated economic strategies conducted by Swedish lifestyle migrants in the property markets in the coastal areas of Majorca, Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca in Spain. Such trajectories that illustrate the extent of the privilege of lifestyle migrants are analyzed by (i) dissecting the privileged position of lifestyle migrants in what Wright labelled as the 'relations of production'; by (ii) exploring how the position in the relations of production intersect with other social structures and particularly age, gender and civil status; and by (iii) categorizing the trajectories of Swedish lifestyle migrants in the Spanish housing market according to three main positions of privilege: less advantaged, advantaged and super advantaged.

From state-controlled to free migration: The income effects of the 2008 Swedish labour-migration reform2023Ingår i: Migration Studies, ISSN 2049-5838, E-ISSN 2049-5846Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In 2008, Sweden changed its labour-migration policy to facilitate more labour migration from countries outside the EU. Most state ambitions to shape labour migration, including practices such as the use of labour-market tests and the assessment of migrants' human capital, were abandoned and the responsibility to select migrants was transferred to employers. We use Swedish register data and adopt a difference-in-differences approach to assess the effects of the policy change on labour migrants' labour income, in comparison to non-EU migrants who moved to Sweden for reasons other than work. The effects of the policy change are substantial. Labour migration from outside the EU increased and its composition changed after the reform, resulting in a significant decrease in mean income. We conclude that changes in their occupational composition were the main drivers of the income drop for labour migrants. In sum, the new non-selective labour-migration policy lowered labour migrants' mean income by opening the door to unskilled labour.

University teachers' professional learning for academic development: Q methodology research2023Ingår i: International journal for academic development, ISSN 1360-144X, E-ISSN 1470-1324Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article reports on an evaluation study of the Qatar University Pedagogical Development (PD) Program. The PD program advocated pedagogical advancement towards student-centered learning (SCL), which has been highlighted as an important part of the university's overall strategy. This study explored 30 university teachers' perspectives on the sources that best supported their professional learning from this long-term PD program. Q methodology research was adopted to collect and analyze data qualitatively and quantitatively. A three-dimensional theoretical framework addressing individual characteristics, choice of actions, and interactions with the environment was used to generate the data collection tool. Q factor analysis yielded four diverse viewpoints as follows: 1) applying newly-learned pedagogical knowledge and skills to practice, 2) being provided supportive environmental conditions, 3) developing new pedagogical beliefs, and 4) taking agentic actions. The implications of this study emphasized institutional systemic and systematic supports as essential for long-term success of academic development.

Driving forces of labour migration as barriers to labour migrants' professional mobility: The case of Yugoslav labour migration2023Ingår i: CES Working Papers, ISSN 2067-7693, Vol. XV, nr 2Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

After consolidation following the Second World War, the Yugoslav regime began modernising thecountry and transforming means of production, which resulted in a fragile economy and increasinglabour surplus. The reforms coincided with economic development and increasing demand formigrant workers in several countries in the western hemisphere. Consequently, the migration ofYugoslav labour emerged and expanded for more than a decade. This article discusses developmentsconditioning and sustaining Yugoslav labour migration and Yugoslav workers’ labour marketperformance in industrial countries of Western Europe. This article draws on empirical literatureand theoretical understandings of labour migration merged with the perception of temporariness oflabour migrants’ relocation. The article argues that Yugoslav workers’ labour market performancein Western Europe was an outcome of interactions between driving forces of Yugoslav labourmigration, practices of its main agents, and the surrounding socioeconomic contexts.

Periodontitis is associated with airflow obstruction in the Malmö Offspring Dental Study2023Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Periodontology, ISSN 0303-6979, E-ISSN 1600-051XArtikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: To investigate the association between periodontitis and lung function in the Malmo Offspring Dental Study.Materials and Methods: In all 1001 individuals (49.9% female, mean age: 44.6) from Malmo Offspring Dental Study were included. Periodontitis was assessed by a full-mouth examination protocol including bleeding on probing and classified according to the American Academy of Periodontology/Center for Disease Control definitions. Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) were expressed as absolute values and %predicted according to Global Lung Function Initiative reference values. FEV1, FVC and FEV1/FVC were analysed in relation to periodontal status using linear regression. Results:Severe periodontitis was found in 7% of the population. Adjusted regression models showed significant associations between lung function and severe periodontitis with 2.1 unit lower FEV1/FVC ratio (95% CI: -3.91, -0.23) and odds ratio (adjusted) of 2.56 (95% CI: 1.40, 4.75, p = .003) for airflow obstruction (FEV1/FVC less than the lower limit of normal) if having severe periodontitis. Lower values of %predicted FEV1 and %predicted FVC, but not FEV1/FVC, were found in individuals with >25% bleeding on probing. Conclusions: Severe periodontitis was associated with lower FEV1/FVC ratio and airflow obstruction in the present cohort. More large-scale prospective studies and intervention studies are required for a comprehensive evaluation.

Meeting families in various social situations: Reflections from healthcare staff working with an extended home-visiting program in Sweden2023Ingår i: Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    Objectives

Health inequalities exist among children in Sweden, and one effort that the Swedish government has focused on to promote health among small children and their parents is an extended home-visiting program during the child’s first 15 months. This study aimed to illuminate healthcare professionals’ experiences of meeting parents in different social situations during the home visits within Grow safely.

    Methods

The chosen method was qualitative, and 13 interviews were carried out with healthcare, social, and dental professionals working with the extended home-visiting program within the child healthcare in the south of Sweden.

    Results

The results revealed that the parents raised differing needs in the meetings with the healthcare professionals in the program. The needs included advice on children with special needs, support with problematic breastfeeding, and more psychosocial support. The professionals met different groups of parents, such as young parents or newly arrived migrant parents, that in different ways needed the team to reach out to them. The professionals also met families who came from better-off areas and who were not initially considered to really need the program. As the program progressed, these parents could see that diverse, unpredictable needs could be met by the intervention. For example, the program provided access to and advice from social workers, which in turn created contacts that lasted longer than the program itself.

    Conclusions

The professionals encountered various family situations and needs within the extended home-visiting program. This highlights the need for a close collaboration between child healthcare nurses and social workers, in order to be able to support the families and work towards the aim of reaching equal health among all children in Sweden.

    Recent Advances in Molecularly Imprinted Polymers and Their Disease-Related Applications2023Ingår i: Polymers, ISSN 2073-4360, E-ISSN 2073-4360, Vol. 15, nr 21, s. 4199-4199Artikel, forskningsöversikt (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and the imprinting technique provide polymeric material with recognition elements similar to natural antibodies. The template of choice (i.e., the antigen) can be almost any type of smaller or larger molecule, protein, or even tissue. There are various formats of MIPs developed for different medical purposes, such as targeting, imaging, assay diagnostics, and biomarker detection. Biologically applied MIPs are widely used and currently developed for medical applications, and targeting the antigen with MIPs can also help in personalized medicine. The synthetic recognition sites of the MIPs can be tailor-made to function as analytics, diagnostics, and drug delivery systems. This review will cover the promising clinical applications of different MIP systems recently developed for disease diagnosis and treatment.

Tid för abduktion: Erfarenhetens bärkraft i forskning och utbildning för framtiden.2023Ingår i: Forskning og Forandring, E-ISSN 2535-5279, Vol. 6, nr 1, s. 22-40Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [sv]

Synergistic metabolism of salivary MUC5B in oral commensal bacteria during early biofilm formation2023Ingår i: Microbiology Spectrum, E-ISSN 2165-0497Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Bacterial metabolism in oral biofilms is comprised of complex networks of nutritional chains and biochemical regulations. These processes involve both intraspecies and interspecies networks as well as interactions with components from host saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, and dietary intake. In a previous paper, a large salivary glycoprotein, mucin MUC5B, was suggested to promote a dental health-related phenotype in the oral type strain of Streptococcus gordonii DL1, by regulating bacterial adhesion and protein expression. In this study, nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabolomics was used to examine the effects on the metabolic output of monospecies compared to dual species early biofilms of two clinical strains of oral commensal bacteria, S. gordonii and Actinomyces naeslundii, in the presence of MUC5B. The presence of S. gordonii increased colonization of A. naeslundii on salivary MUC5B, and both commensals were able to utilize MUC5B as a sole nutrient source during early biofilm formation. The metabolomes suggested that the bacteria were able to release mucin carbohydrates from oligosaccharide side chains as well as amino acids from the protein core. Synergistic effects were also seen in the dual species biofilm metabolome compared to the monospecies, indicating that A. naeslundii and S. gordonii cooperated in the degradation of salivary MUC5B. A better understanding of bacterial interactions and salivary-mediated regulation of early dental biofilm activity is meaningful for understanding oral biofilm physiology and may contribute to the development of future prevention strategies for biofilm-induced oral disease.

IMPORTANCE: The study of bacterial interactions and salivary-mediated regulation of early dental biofilm activity is of interest for understanding oral microbial adaptation to environmental cues and biofilm maturation. Findings in oral commensals can prove useful from the perspectives of both oral and systemic health of the host, as well as the understanding of general microbial biofilm physiology. The knowledge may provide a basis for the development of prognostic biomarkers, or development of new treatment strategies, related to oral health and disease and possibly also to other biofilm-induced conditions. The study is also an important step toward developing the methodology for similar studies in other species and/or growth conditions.

Using the Gini coefficient for assessing heterogeneity within classes and schools2023Ingår i: SN Social Sciences, E-ISSN 2662-9283, Vol. 3, nr 11, artikel-id 186Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study demonstrates that the Gini coefficient works as a dispersion measure for gauging educational heterogeneity in and between classrooms and schools. The method for this is to compare Gini coefficients for empirical data from various areas such as gender proportions in upper secondary school programmes and dispersion in achievement within classroom and between schools. The main results are that the Gini coefficient works for gauging heterogeneity on different statistical measurement scales and different sample sizes. An example of small sample is the nominal categories of upper secondary school study programmes, for which the Gini coefficient gauges differences in gender proportions while this sample size should be too small for several other measures of inequality and dispersion. An example of large sample of quotient scale data is two neighbour schools that mainly enrol different achievement strata from the same student cohort. Here the Gini coefficient displays the two schools’ student heterogeneity to be different. An example of moderate size sample is to explore how the teaching group heterogeneity, gauged as Gini coefficient on achievements, re-distributes from within to between classes as the same students proceed from cohesive compulsory school to the students’ individual choice of upper secondary school programmes. Since the Gini coefficient can gauge heterogeneity on small samples, a suggestion for further research is to use it for exploring the relation between strategies for classroom orchestration and levels of classroom heterogeneity, for example between teaching groups at different achievement strata.

Can Job Demands and Job Resources Predict Bystander Behaviour in Workplace Bullying? A Longitudinal Study2023Ingår i: International Journal of Bullying Prevention, ISSN 2523-3653Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Bystanders can affect workplace bullying by engaging in active or passive behaviours. However, there is a knowledge gapregarding how perceived work environment factors relate to bystander behaviour. The study aim was to investigate how job demands, and job resources are associated with bystander behaviour in workplace bullying. An online questionnaire wasdistributed to a sample of health care workers at two time points. Longitudinal data were obtained from 1144 respondents. Cross-lagged panel models were used to investigate associations between job demands, job resources, and bystander behaviours over time. The results showed that social support was positively related to active behaviours, whereas influence at work was negatively related to both active and passive behaviours. Perceived illegitimate tasks were negatively related to active and positively related to passive behaviours, whereas emotional demands had an unanticipated opposite pattern of relationships. The findings provide new information about how factors in the organisational and social work environment are associated with active and passive bystander behaviours in workplace bullying. Specifically, the results expand current understanding of workplace bullying by relating bystander behaviour to the organisational context.

Analytic philosophy of education: Some suggested questions and directions2023Ingår i: Theory and Research in Education, ISSN 1477-8785, E-ISSN 1741-3192, Vol. 21, nr 3, s. 337-349Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates whether there is any place for the school of thought that is known as analytic philosophy of education in the aftermath of postmodernism, and whether analytic philosophy of education can be treated as a ‘method’, among other alternative ‘methods’, that can be applied regardless of what kind of ‘-ism’ or ideology one embraces. An additional aim is to suggest some important questions for analytic philosophy of education to take into consideration. We argue that conceptual engineering may be a promising avenue for analytic educational theory if it is used with a critical intent that is more heuristic and inconclusive than prescriptively ideal.

    Applications of Tumor Cells in an In Vitro 3D Environment2023Ingår i: Applied Sciences, E-ISSN 2076-3417, Vol. 13, nr 18, s. 10349-10349Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Spherical, multicellular aggregates of tumor cells, or three-dimensional (3D) tumor models, can be grown from established cell lines or dissociated cells from tissues in a serum-free medium containing appropriate growth factors. Air–liquid interfaces (ALIs) represent a 3D approach that mimics and supports the differentiation of respiratory tract and skin 3D models in vitro. Many 3D tumor cell models are cultured in conjunction with supporting cell types, such as fibroblasts, endothelial cells, or immune cells. To further mimic the in vivo situation, several extracellular matrix models are utilized to support tumor cell growth. Scaffolds used for 3D tumor cell culture growth include both natural and synthetic hydrogels. Three-dimensional cell culture experiments in vitro provide more accurate data on cell-to-cell interactions, tumor characteristics, drug discovery, metabolic profiling, stem cell research, and diseases. Moreover, 3D models are important for obtaining reliable precision data on therapeutic candidates in human clinical trials before predicting drug cytotoxicity. This review focuses on the recent literature on three different tissue types of 3D tumor models, i.e., tumors from a colorectal site, prostate, and skin. We will discuss the establishment of 3D tumor cell cultures in vitro and the requirement for additional growth support.

‘Ecce Ego’: Apollo, Dionysus, and Performative Social Media2023Ingår i: Sport, Ethics and Philosophy, ISSN 1751-1321, E-ISSN 1751-133X, s. 1-18Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Epitomized in the bodily exhibitions of ‘fitspiration’, photo-based social media is biased toward self-beautification and glorification of reality. Meanwhile, evidence is growing of psychological side effects connected to this ‘pictorial turn’ in our communication. In The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche poses the question how ugliness and discord can produce aesthetic pleasure. This paper proceeds from an inverse relationship and examines why glorification of appear- ances and conspicuous beauty fails to do the same, and even compounds suffering. Drawing on the Apollo-Dionysus dualism undergirding Nietzsche’s aesthetic philosophy, I posit a deeper relation between the saturation of visual self-exhibitionism typified in fitspiration and its empirical effects. Concentrating on the med- ium and self-representational photograph, I argue that Instagram is primarily an instrument of Apolline artifice and that the pictorial turn which defines the present centers Apolline mediation to the detrimental exclusion of meaningful communion with its Dionysiac antithesis. For users immersed in this Apolline sphere of visual self- representation, a fractured existence beholden to conditions of the image ensues—comprising surface-level appearances, deification of the moment, and loss of existential sustenance through myth. By positioning fitspiration not as an aberration but as the logical conclusion of the medium’s intrinsic Apolline property, it becomes a litmus test of the entire visual landscape and illustrative of the implications that uncritical participation in it may bring.
