Occurrence, presence and severity of bruxism and its association with altered state of consciousness in individuals with severe acquired brain injury2023Ingår i: Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, ISSN 0305-182X, E-ISSN 1365-2842Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Excessive jaw muscle activity is a frequent complication after acquired brain injury (ABI).

Objective: The study aimed to identify the occurrence and severity of jaw muscle activity and its association with altered state of consciousness in patients with ABI.

Methods: A total of 14 severe ABI patients with varied altered state of consciousness were recruited. A single-channel electromyographic (EMG) device was used to assess the jaw muscle activity for three consecutive nights during Week 1 and Week 4 following admission. Differences in number of EMG episodes/h between Week 1 and 4 were analysed using non-parametric tests and association between the EMG activity and altered state of consciousness were analysed using Spearman's correlation test.

Results: Nine of fourteen (64%) patients showed indications of bruxism (cutoff: >15 EMG episodes/h). The average EMG episodes/h at admission were 44.5 ± 13.6 with no significant changes after Week 4 of admission (43 ± 12.9; p = .917). The EMG episodes/h ranged from 2 to 184 during Week 1 and 4-154 during Week 4. There were no significant correlations between the number of EMG episodes/h during the three nights and the individuals altered state of consciousness during Week 1 and Week 4.

Conclusion: Patients with ABI had a conspicuously high but variable level of jaw muscle activity at admission and it tend to remain high after 4 week of hospitalisation which could potentially lead to adverse effects such as excessive tooth wear, headaches and pain in jaw muscles. The lack of associations between individuals altered level of consciousness and EMG activity could be due to low sample size and further studies are clearly warranted in this patient group with special needs. Single-channel EMG devices can record jaw muscle activity early in the hospitalisation period and might be a helpful tools for early detection of bruxism in ABI patients.

Salivary levels of Osteoprotegerin and receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa ligand during orthodontic tooth movement: A prospective pilot study2023Ingår i: Orthodontics & craniofacial research, ISSN 1601-6335, E-ISSN 1601-6343Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: The aim of this study was to monitor changes in Osteoprotegerin (OPG) and receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa ligand (RANKL) levels in the saliva during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Materials and Methods: Nine healthy females (15-20 y of age) with four pre-molar extractions and fixed appliance were included. In total, 134 stimulated and 134 unstimulated saliva samples were collected: at baseline and then every 6-8 weeks at follow-up appointments during the whole orthodontic treatment. Twelve age-matched females with no active orthodontic treatment served as a control group. Saliva samples were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Elisa). The mean levels of OPG and RANKL were calculated according to the different orthodontic treatment stages: alignment, space closure and finishing. A mixed model analysis was used to compare the means of treatment stages. Baseline OPG levels were compared with the control group using an independent t-test. OPG levels were measured in stimulated saliva due to low levels in unstimulated saliva. Results: No significant difference was observed between baseline OPG values and the control group. OPG increased significantly at all treatment stages: alignment, space closure and finishing compared with baseline (P = 0.002, P = 0.039, P = 0.001, respectively). The salivary levels of OPG increased gradually, except during space closure, reaching peak levels at finishing. RANKL was undetectable in stimulated and unstimulated saliva by sandwich Elisa during OTM. Conclusions: This novel approach shows the changes in the levels of OPG in OTM and indicates how and when to sample saliva during orthodontic treatment to analyse bone remodelling.

Sound psychometric properties of a short new screening tool for patient safety climate: applying a Rasch model analysis2023Ingår i: BMC Health Services Research, E-ISSN 1472-6963, Vol. 23, nr 1, artikel-id 742Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background: WHO recommends repeated measurement of patient safety climate in health care and to support monitoring an 11 item questionnaire on sustainable safety engagement (HSE) has been developed by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions. This study aimed to validate the psychometric properties of the HSE.

Methods: Survey responses (n = 761) from a specialist care provider organization in Sweden was used to evaluate psychometric properties of the HSE 11-item questionnaire. A Rasch model analysis was applied in a stepwise process to evaluate evidence of validity and precision/reliability in relation to rating scale functioning, internal structure, response processes, and precision in estimates.

Results: Rating scales met the criteria for monotonical advancement and fit. Local independence was demonstrated for all HSE items. The first latent variable explained 52.2% of the variance. The first ten items demonstrated good fit to the Rasch model and were included in the further analysis and calculation of an index measure based on the raw scores. Less than 5% of the respondents demonstrated low person goodness-of-fit. Person separation index > 2. The flooring effect was negligible and the ceiling effect 5.7%. No differential item functioning was shown regarding gender, time of employment, role within organization or employee net promotor scores. The correlation coefficient between the HSE mean value index and the Rasch-generated unidimensional measures of the HSE 10-item scale was r = .95 (p < .01).

Conclusions: This study shows that an eleven-item questionnaire can be used to measure a common dimension of staff perceptions on patient safety. The responses can be used to calculate an index that enables benchmarking and identification of at least three different levels of patient safety climate. This study explores a single point in time, but further studies may support the use of the instrument to follow development of the patient safety climate over time by repeated measurement.

    Partnership policing and the dynamics of administrative growth2023Ingår i: Policing & society, ISSN 1043-9463, E-ISSN 1477-2728, s. 1-15Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The current article reports findings from a research project on partnership policing in Stockholm, Sweden, to investigate how partnership policing strategies translate into social action. Consideration is given to the ways in which police officers and city employees produce chains of administrative tasks as they navigate their institutional environment and strive to produce legitimacy for partnership policing. More broadly, the findings suggest that the inner mechanisms of a partnership approach to policing are shaped by the self-referential (Eigendynamik) character of administration. The article discusses implications for partnership policing and for the broader literature on policing.

The relationship between dominant Western discourse and personal narratives of female genital cutting: exploring storytelling among Swedish-Somali girls and women2023Ingår i: Frontiers in Sociology, E-ISSN 2297-7775, Vol. 8, artikel-id 1188097Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: A dominant narrative, referred to as “the standard tale,” prevails in popular representations about female genital cutting (FGC) that often contrast with how cut women traditionally narrate their FGC experience as meaningful in contexts where FGC is customary. However, scholarship has increasingly highlighted how global eradication campaigns and migration to countries where FGC is stigmatized provide women with new frames of understanding which may lead to a reformulation of previous experiences. This article subjects the storytelling itself to analysis and explores how participants narrate and make sense of their FGC experience in a post-migration setting where FGC is stigmatized.

Methods: Semi-structured focus groups (9) and individual interviews (12) with Swedish-Somali girls and women (53) were conducted.

Results: The article highlights how the participants navigate their storying in relation to "the standard tale" of FGC in their efforts to make sense of their experiences. Navigation was conducted both at an intrapersonal level through continuous identity work, and in relation to the social context in interpersonal encounters, i.e., with service providers and others, among whom the standard tale has become a truth.

Discussion: The article places the analysis within broader discussions about anti-FGC work and considers the implications in relation to efforts to end FGC.

Electronic Tongue for Direct Assessment of SARS-CoV-2-Free and Infected Human Saliva-A Feasibility Study2023Ingår i: Biosensors, ISSN 2079-6374, Vol. 13, nr 7, artikel-id 717Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

An electronic tongue is a powerful analytical instrument based on an array of non-selective chemical sensors with a partial specificity for data gathering and advanced pattern recognition methods for data analysis. Connecting electronic tongues with electrochemical techniques for data collection has led to various applications, mostly within sensing for food quality and environmental monitoring, but also in biomedical research for the analyses of different bioanalytes in human physiological fluids. In this paper, an electronic tongue consisting of six electrodes (viz., gold, platinum, palladium, titanium, iridium, and glassy carbon) was designed and tested in authentic (undiluted, unpretreated) human saliva samples from eight volunteers, collected before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Investigations of 11 samples using differential pulse voltammetry and a principal component analysis allowed us to distinguish between SARS-CoV-2-free and infected authentic human saliva. This work, as a proof-of-principle demonstration, provides a new perspective for the use of electronic tongues in the field of enzyme-free electrochemical biosensing, highlighting their potential for future applications in non-invasive biomedical analyses.

    Occupational therapy gender imbalance; revisiting a lingering issue2023Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy, ISSN 1103-8128, E-ISSN 1651-2014, Vol. 30, nr 7, s. 1113-1121Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Recently, it has been suggested that gender disparity in Occupational Therapy has to do with segregated gendered job norms that position female dominated professions as a 'step down' for many males. Interestingly, this suggestion was not underpinned by experiences of males in the profession.

Aims and methods: Thirteen male Occupational Therapists with a variety of backgrounds were invited to this Round Table research, focussing on the broader issue of the existing gender imbalance in Occupational Therapy.

Results: Two themes emerged: 'The core values of the profession', and 'Broadening the scope of the profession'; none of them suggesting that male/female imbalance was necessarily the most pressing issue.

Conclusions: A gender-unrelated approach to everyday problem-solving was put forward to achieve increased diversity in Occupational Therapists' backgrounds, better reflecting the people they serve. By broadening the scope and the way the profession is presented, and encouraging innovative and more entrepreneurially driven approaches, diversity in the workforce could be further facilitated. These findings are discussed within the context of 'The mutual constitution of cultures and selves' model.

Significance: Diversity in the Occupational therapy workforce could be further facilitated with a shift in focus away from the male/female perspective to an intersectional approach.

Development of integrated jaw-neck motor function in children at 6, 10 and 13 years of age compared to adults: A kinematic longitudinal study2023Ingår i: Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, E-ISSN 1365-2842, Vol. 50, nr 10, s. 1002-1011Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

BackgroundThe functional integration of the jaw and neck motor systems, of great importance to everyday oral activities, is established in early childhood. Detailed characterisation of this developmental progress is largely unknown. ObjectiveTo establish developmental changes in jaw-neck motor function in children over the ages 6-13 years compared to adults. MethodsJaw and head movement kinematics during jaw opening-closing and chewing were longitudinally recorded in 20 Swedish children (8 girls) at 6 (6.3 & PLUSMN; 0.4), 10 (10.3 & PLUSMN; 0.3) and 13 (13.5 & PLUSMN; 0.7) years of age and 20 adults (9 women, 28.2 & PLUSMN; 6.7). Movement amplitudes, jaw movement cycle time (CT), coefficient of variation (CV) and head/jaw ratio for amplitudes were analysed. Linear mixed effect analysis and Welch's t-test were used. ResultsChildren showed pronounced movement variability and longer CT at 6 and 10 years old during opening and chewing (p < .001). Compared to adults, 6-year-olds showed higher head/jaw ratios (p < .02) and longer CT (p < .001) during opening and chewing, and higher CV-head (p < .001) during chewing. Whereas 10-year-olds showed larger jaw and head amplitudes (p < .02) and longer CT (p < .001) during opening, and longer CT (p < .001) and higher CV-head (p < .001) during chewing. For 13-year-olds, longer CT (p < .001) during chewing was found. ConclusionChildren showed pronounced movement variability and longer movement cycle time at 6-10 years and developmental progress in jaw-neck integration from 6 to 13 years, with 13-year-olds displaying adult-like movements. These results add new detailed understanding to the typical development of integrated jaw-neck motor function.

    Abstract [en]

Periodontal diseases include pathological conditions elicited by the presence of bacterial biofilms leading to a host response. In the diagnostic process, clinical signs such as bleeding on probing, development of periodontal pockets and gingival recessions, furcation involvement and presence of radiographic bone loss should be assessed prior to periodontal therapy, following active therapy, and during long-term supportive care. In addition, patient-reported outcomes such as increased tooth mobility, migration, and tilting should also be considered. More important to the patient, however, is the fact that assessment of signs of periodontal diseases must be followed by an appropriate treatment plan. Furthermore, it should be realized that clinical and radiographic periodontal diagnosis is based on signs which may not reflect the presence of active disease but rather represent the sequelae of a previous bacterial challenge. Hence, the aim of the present review is to provide a summary of clinical and radiographic diagnostic criteria required to classify patients with periodontal health or disease.

Symptoms of depression and anxiety among elite high school student-athletes in Sweden during the COVID-19 pandemic: A repeated cross-sectional study2023Ingår i: Journal of Sports Sciences, ISSN 0264-0414, E-ISSN 1466-447X, Vol. 41, nr 9, s. 874-883Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated numerous changes in daily life, including the cancellation and restriction of sports globally. Because sports participation contributes positively to the development of student-athletes, restricting these activities may have led to long-term mental health changes in this population. Using a repeated cross-sectional study design, we measured rates of depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 and anxiety using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 scale in student-athletes attending elite sport high schools in Sweden during the second wave of the pandemic (February 2021; n = 7021) and after all restrictions were lifted (February 2022; n = 6228). Depression among student-athletes decreased from 19.8% in 2021 to 17.8% in 2022 (p = .008, V = .026), while anxiety screening did not change significantly (17.4% to 18.4%, p > .05). Comparisons between classes across years revealed older students exhibited decreases in depressive symptoms, while younger cohorts experienced increases in symptoms of anxiety from 2021 to 2022. Logistic regressions revealed that being female, reporting poorer mental health due to COVID-19, and excessive worry over one's career in sports were significant predictors of both depression and anxiety screenings in 2022. Compared to times when sports participation was limited, the lifting of restrictions was associated with overall reduced levels of depression, but not anxiety.

Implantoplasty and the risk of fracture of narrow implants with advanced bone loss: A laboratory study2023Ingår i: Clinical Oral Implants Research, ISSN 0905-7161, E-ISSN 1600-0501, Vol. 34, nr 10, s. 1038-1046Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: To assess the impact of implantoplasty (IP) on maximum implant failure strength of narrow diameter implants of different type/design and material, with simulated advanced bone loss.

Materials and Methods: Narrow, parallel-walled implants (3.3 mm in diameter x 10 mm long) with an internal connection of different type/design [bone level (BL), tissue level (TL)] and material [Titanium grade IV (Ti), Titanium-Zirconium alloy (TiZr)] from one specific manufacturer were used. Half of the implants were subjected to IP in their coronal 5 mm; the remaining were used as controls (seven implants per group). Dynamic loading prior to maximum load strength testing was included.

Results: During dynamic loading, the fracture rate of BL implants was low and independent of IP, while that of TL implants increased significantly with IP compared with controls (p = .001). Maximum implant failure strength reduction (in %) due to IP, was 1.3%-25.4%; TiZr BL implants were least affected. Implants subjected to IP compared to those without IP as well as TL implants compared to BL implants showed a significantly lower maximum implant failure strength (p < .002); implant material was not significant (p = .845).

Conclusions: Based on data from implants of one specific manufacturer, IP has a significant negative impact on the fracture strength of narrow implants suffering from advanced peri-implantitis. TL implants have been more severely affected compared to BL implants and presented an increased risk for failure during normal chewing forces. In addition, this negative impact of IP on TL implants was independent of the implant material (i.e., Ti or TiZr).

Clinical Relevance: Narrow single TL implants with advanced horizontal bone loss (e.g., 5 mm), when subjected to IP, appear to have an increased fracture risk during normal function.

Sexual health in diabetes care is a 'hot topic'-A qualitative study with Diabetes Specialist Nurses2023Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 32, nr 19-20, s. 7568-7577Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of this study is to illuminate Diabetes Specialist Nurses' experiences of having a conversation about sexual health with adults with diabetes.

Background: It is well known that diabetes mellitus may affect a person's sexual function. Interview studies with men and women living with diabetes show that conversations about sexual health are important. However, research on Diabetes Specialist Nurses' experiences of having such conversations is limited.

Design: A qualitative approach, with individual interviews, was used.

Method: Purposive sampling was used to recruit 12 informants from adult diabetes care, within primary health care and within hospital settings in southern Sweden, between September and November 2021. A qualitative latent content analysis was used for data analysis. The COREQ guidelines were followed to ensure rigour for this study.

Results: One theme, 'Sexual health is a hot topic', could be understood in light of three categories: 'Obstructive factors that complicate the conversation', 'Promoting factors that facilitate the conversation' and 'Improvements that may facilitate the conversation'. The findings embrace the Diabetes Specialist Nurses' experiences of having a conversation about sexual health with persons with diabetes.

Conclusions: Diabetes Specialist Nurses often experience difficulty having a conversation about sexual health with their patients. The findings provide a deeper understanding of their experiences of obstructive as well as promoting factors related to conversations about what is considered a 'hot topic'.

Relevance to Clinical Practice: To increase knowledge on how to have a conversation about sexual health within diabetes care, support is needed from the organisation; the organisation could, for instance, support the diabetes care staff in gaining education and training regarding sexual health.

Patient or Public Contribution: Not applicable due to the current method.

Self-perceived oral health and orofacial appearance in an adult population, 60 years of age2023Ingår i: International Journal of Dental Hygiene, ISSN 1601-5029, E-ISSN 1601-5037Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: The study aimed to compare self-perceived oral health and orofacial appearance in three different cohorts of 60-year-old individuals. Method: A cross-sectional design, based on data obtained from a questionnaire used in the Swedish National Study of Aging and Care. The sample comprised 478 individuals, from baseline, 2001-2003 (n = 191), 2007-2009 (n = 218) and 2014-2015 (n = 69). Comparisons were made within and between the cohorts, with bivariate analysis and Fisher's exact test. Statistical significance was considered at p < 0.05. Results: The result showed that a low number of the participants reported self-perceived problems with oral health. Of the problems reported, a higher proportion in cohort 2014-2015 (39.3%) experienced problems with bleeding gums. The experience of bleeding gums increased between the cohorts 2001-2003 and 2014-2015 (p = 0.040) and between 2007-2009 and 2014-2015 (p = 0.017). The prevalence of discomfort with sensitive teeth was experienced in 7%-32%. Twice as many women compared to men experienced discomfort in all cohorts (no significant differences between the cohorts). Satisfaction with dental appearance was experienced in 75%-84%. Twice as many women compared to men were dissatisfied with their dental appearance in 2001-2003 (p = 0.011) and with discoloured teeth (p = 0.020). No significant differences could be seen between the cohorts regarding discomfort with dental appearance or discoloured teeth. Conclusion: The 60-year-olds irrespective of birth cohort, perceived their oral health and orofacial appearance as satisfactory.

Limosilactobacillus reuteri inhibits the acid tolerance response in oral bacteria2023Ingår i: Biofilm, E-ISSN 2590-2075, Vol. 6, artikel-id 100136Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Probiotic bacteria show promising results in prevention of the biofilm-mediated disease caries, but the mechanisms are not fully understood. The acid tolerance response (ATR) allows biofilm bacteria to survive and metabolize at low pH resulting from microbial carbohydrate fermentation. We have studied the effect of probiotic strains: Limosilactobacillus reuteri and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus on ATR induction in common oral bacteria. Communities of L. reuteri ATCC PTA5289 and Streptoccus gordonii, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus mutans or Actinomyces naeslundii in the initial stages of biofilm formation were exposed to pH 5.5 to allow ATR induction, followed by a low pH challenge. Acid tolerance was evaluated as viable cells after staining with LIVE/ DEAD & REG;BacLightTM. The presence of L. reuteri ATCC PTA5289 caused a significant reduction in acid tolerance in all strains except S. oralis. When S. mutans was used as a model organism to study the effects of additional probiotic strains (L. reuteri SD2112, L. reuteri DSM17938 or L. rhamnosus GG) as well as L. reuteri ATCC PTA5289 supernatant on ATR development, neither the other probiotic strains nor supernatants showed any effect. The presence of L. reuteri ATCC PTA5289 during ATR induction led to down-regulation of three key genes involved in tolerance of acid stress (luxS, brpA and ldh) in Streptococci. These data suggest that live cells of probiotic L. reuteri ATCC PTA5289 can interfere with ATR development in common oral bacteria and specific strains of L. reuteri may thus have a role in caries prevention by inhibiting development of an acid-tolerant biofilm microbiota.

Development and evaluation of the Norwegian Fatigue Characteristics and Interference Measure (FCIM) for stroke survivors: cognitive interviews and Rasch analysis2023Ingår i: Quality of Life Research, ISSN 0962-9343, E-ISSN 1573-2649, Vol. 32, nr 12, s. 3389-3401Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: There is need for a comprehensive measure of post-stroke fatigue with sound measurement properties. This study aimed to develop the Norwegian Fatigue Characteristics and Interference Measure (FCIM) and assess its content validity, structural validity, and internal consistency.

Method: This study consisted of three steps: (1) an expert panel developed version 1.0 of the Norwegian FCIM, (2) its content validity was assessed in cognitive interviews with stroke patients (N = 15), (3) a convenience sample of stroke patients (N = 169) completed an online questionnaire with the FCIM, Fatigue Severity Scale, and sociodemographic information; validity and reliability were assessed using Rasch analysis.

Results: FCIM version 1.0 included a 10-item characteristics subscale, a 20-item interference subscale, and two pre-stroke fatigue items. The cognitive interviews revealed content validity issues, resulting in two interference items being removed and five items being flagged but retained for Rasch analysis (version 2.0). Rasch analysis led to removal of four items from the characteristics subscale and six more from the interference subscale. The final six-item characteristics subscale and 12-item interference subscale (version 3.0) both showed adequate fit to the Rasch model with indications of unidimensionality and local independence. The interference subscale had a high person separation index. No significant differential item function (DIF) was found in relation to gender, but one item demonstrated DIF in relation to age.

Conclusion: The cognitive interviews and Rasch analysis demonstrated that the Norwegian version of the FCIM has high content validity, structural validity, and internal consistency. Future research should assess its construct validity, reliability, and responsiveness.

Coming across a hidden problem in an excluded population in Sweden: professionals' experiences of young migrants' disclosures of sexual violence2023Ingår i: Culture, Health and Sexuality, ISSN 1369-1058, E-ISSN 1464-5351Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Growing evidence suggests that young migrants are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence. As young migrants often lack family and social networks, professionals are often the recipients of disclosures of sexual violence. This study aimed to explore how professionals experience young migrants' disclosures of sexual violence. A qualitative design was used, based on 14 semi-structured interviews with a range of professionals from the public sector and civil society in southern Sweden. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The overarching theme developed was 'coming across the hidden problem of sexual violence in an excluded population' supported by three sub-themes: 'linking structural marginalisation and vulnerability to sexual violence'; 'realising that sexual violence is one among many other concerns'; and 'taking pride in backing up young people betrayed by society'. Professionals expressed a strong sense of responsibility due to the complex vulnerabilities of young migrants and their lack of access to services. This, coupled with the lack of clarity about how to respond to disclosures of sexual violence, can lead to moral distress. There is a need to strengthen support for professionals, including recognition of ethical dilemmas and the establishment of formal connections between organisations making access more straightforward and predictable.

Endodontic operative field asepsis: a comparison between general dentists and specialists2023Ingår i: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, ISSN 0001-6357, E-ISSN 1502-3850, Vol. 81, nr 8, s. 603-608Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: The aim was to evaluate the establishment of an aseptic endodontic operative field in general dentistry by assessing general dentists' ability to reduce the amount of contamination to a non-cultivable level, and to compare the operative field asepsis at a general dentistry clinic with that at an endodontic specialist clinic.

Materials and Methods: A total of 353 teeth were included in the study (153 in general dentistry, 200 at the specialist clinic). After isolation, control samples were taken, the operative fields disinfected with 30% hydrogen peroxide (1 min) followed by 5% iodine tincture or .5% chlorhexidine solution. Samples were collected from the access cavity area and buccal area, placed in a fluid thioglycolate medium, incubated (37 & DEG;, 7 d), evaluated for growth/non-growth.

Results: Significantly more contamination was observed at the general dentistry clinic (31.6%, 95/301), than at the endodontic specialist clinic (7.0%, 27/386) (p <.001). In general dentistry, significantly more positive samples were collected in the buccal area than in the occlusal area. Significantly more positive samples were collected when the chlorhexidine protocol had been used, both in general dentistry (p <.001) and at the specialist clinic (p =.028).

Conclusions: The result from this study shows insufficient endodontic aseptic control in general dentistry. At the specialist clinic, both disinfection protocols were able to reduce the amount of microorganisms to a non-cultivable level. The observed difference between the protocols may not reflect a true difference in the effectiveness of the antimicrobial solutions, as confounding factors may have contributed to the result.

Mutiny on the Boundary?: Examining ILK-Based Conservation Collaborations through the Lens of Rubbish Theory2023Ingår i: Ethnobiology Letters, ISSN 2159-8126, Vol. 14, nr 2, s. 83-91Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Many conservation researchers and practitioners argue that knowledges traditionally conceptualized as nonacademic are useful for guiding environmental decision-making and stewardship. As demonstrated by the articles in this special issue, bringing Indigenous and local knowledges to bear on environmental conservation requires forging new relationships and, de facto, new political arrangements. In this article, we seek to clarify what is at stake in such efforts to change (or maintain) what counts as knowledge by applying rubbish theory to the volume's case studies. Redrawing the boundaries of what counts as conservation knowledge in engagements between academic researchers and practitioners trained to "do conservation" according to western science traditions, on the one hand, and Indigenous peoples and local communities who possess knowledge generated in non-academic contexts, on the other, effects demarcations of expertise and so challenges existing social hierarchies. Unsurprisingly, tension emerges about how far such changes should go. By increasing awareness of the relationship between (re)defining knowledge and (re)configuring social and political hierarchies, we hope to make it easier for participants to manage such collaborations.

    Doing Conservation Differently: Toward a Diverse Conservations Inventory2023Ingår i: Ethnobiology Letters, ISSN 2159-8126, Vol. 14, nr 2, s. 1-9Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Many scientists and environmental activists argue that the scale and scope of contemporary conservation must increase dramatically if we are to halt biodiversity declines and sustain a healthy planet. Yet conservation as currently practiced has faced significant critique for its reliance on reductionist science, advocacy of "fortress"-like preservation measures that disproportionately harm marginalized communities, and integration into the global capitalist system that is the root cause of environmental degradation. The contributions to this special issue, developed from a panel at the Anthropology and Conservation conference co-hosted by the Royal Anthropological Institute and the Society of Ethnobiology in October 2021, collectively argue for what we, borrowing from Gibson-Graham's diverse economies framework, call "doing conservation differently." By bringing marginalized, hidden, and alternative conservation activities to light, researchers can contribute, in the spirit of Gibson-Graham's work, to making these diverse conservations more real and credible as objects of policy and activism. This special issue contributes to inventorying the diverse conservations that already exist, which opens new spaces for ethical intervention and collective action.

    Grading of minor salivary gland immuno-histopathology post-allogenic hematopoietic cell transplantation2023Ingår i: Heliyon, E-ISSN 2405-8440, Vol. 9, nr 4, artikel-id e15517Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: The oral cavity commonly displays mucosal lichenoid lesions and salivary gland dysfunction, which are considered different chronic Graft-versus-Host Disease (cGVHD) patho-physiology's. However, diagnostics of salivary gland (sg-)cGVHD are limited. The objectives of the current study are to evaluate the minor salivary gland (MSG) histo-immunopathological profiles post allogenic hematopoietic cell transplantation based on sg-cGVHD criteria. Design: Histopathology was characterized according to two published grading strategies. Firstly, the National Institute of Health (NIH) assessed peri-ductal/acinar infiltration, exocytosis, damage, and fibrosis, and a points-based grading scheme was established (0-16 points, Grade (G) 0 to IV). Second, a modified Sjo center dot gren's Syndrome focus-score with parenchymal damage was also adapted, (0-10 points, Score 0 to 2). 146 MSG biopsies from 79 patients were compared, using the his-topathological specific criteria for sg-cGVHD pathology. Quantitative immunohistochemistry for T-cells (CD4, CD8), B-cells (CD19, CD20), monocytic cells (CD68) and dendritic cells (CD1a) were also assessed. Results: The large-scale cohort validated the use of both grading schemes. GIII-GIV and score 2 signified a histopathological diagnosis of "likely" sg-cGVHD. Immunopathological severity was associated with increased T-cells (CD4 and CD8) and monocytic (CD68) infiltrate, with minimal involvement of B-cells (CD19 and CD20), and Langerhans cells (CD1a). Conclu-sions: Both schemes were verified as being suitable for histological grading to improve assess-ment and diagnosis of sg-cGVHD. The NIH cGVHD grading appears to be more beneficial for research purposes, including final diagnostics of "no/inactive", "possible" or "likely" cGVHD. The study highlights the intricacies of sg-cGVHD pathology; and the need for standardized assessment to improve patient management associated to sg-cGVHD.

    Abstract [en]

This article explores students' experiences of intellectual, social, and emotional growth during the first year at university and the extent to which these experiences can be considered transformative (Mezirow, 1981). The study is a qualitative interpretative multiple-case study built on semi-structured interviews with students in two higher education contexts, Argentina and Sweden. The results show that most students experience similarly interrelated changes concerning self-confidence, knowledge- and language abilities, critical thinking, and values and beliefs. For some students, these changes lead to profound shifts in how they perceive themselves and their possibilities. Such transformative experiences are emancipatory and empowering, giving students more control over their lives. Other students are gradually changing, experiencing growth in knowledge, literacy, and self-confidence. However, they do not yet experience profound changes in their worldview and how they perceive themselves. Contextual factors related to family life and future profession affect the significance the students attach to experienced changes.

    Abstract [en]

A major challenge for first-year students is the demands on academic writing. The purpose of the study is to identify students' difficulties with writing at the beginning of their education to contribute to the discussion about how students' writing development can be supported. The overall theoretical perspective is systemic functional linguistics (SFL). The data consists of texts from the first examination of a primary teacher program. The analysis includes partly a corpus analysis of 125 texts concerning sentence length, word length, the proportion of long words, word variation, and lexical profile, and partly a qualitative text analysis of a selection of eleven students' texts from the larger group concerning text cohesion, composition and use of references. The results indicate that the task design is of great importance for how advanced the students' texts are, based on the proportion of long words, word variation, and lexical profile. Furthermore, students struggle with paragraph division and creating clear relationships between and within paragraphs to create coherent texts. The results also show that the students need support to develop their ability to write from sources. Based on the results, the authors discuss how subject teachers in higher education can support students' writing development.

The aim of this paper is to improve the knowledge of collaborative challenges when planning and implementing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Collaborative challenges are here understood as the barriers that may arise in BRT planning and implementation as a consequence of several formally independent actors, occasionally with different interests, participating in the planning. The results are based on an analysis of actor interactions in Swedish BRT projects. These projects are analysed in relation to the state of the art in the research field of collaborative approaches. The results show two main and interrelated collaborative challenges. The first category of challenges concerns difficulties for actors in creating a common understanding of what a BRT system is, the second category concerns details of bus priority measures, e.g. busways, priority at intersections, and how to handle and deal with conflicting interests when removing speed bumps or pedestrian and cycle crossings. In terms of policy is in the early stages of the planning processes. This can be generated by working practices and tools that facilitate agreements on how to handle different interests and trade-offs. BRT guidelines adapted to national transport policy, legal and organisational conditions could function as tools in assisting actor dialogue.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to analyse the attitudes to history and memory expressed in the working-class poetry of Stig Sjödin (1917–1993) – both in Sotfratgment (Fragments of Soot) from 1949, which marked his breakthrough as a poet, and in the poetry he wrote for the labour movement (mainly poems published in tradeunion membership magazines or read at meetings and congresses) – and to discuss how he and his poetry are today viewed as reminders of political ideals and experiences threatened by oblivion. There are certain differences between how memory and remembering is treated in Sotfragment and in Sjödin’s labour-movement poetry respectively. In Sotfragment, focus is more often on individual memories and existential problems, whereas in the labour-movement poetry, Sjödin is sometimes more explicitly political and writes about collective memories from a proletarian perspective. These differences are conditioned by differences between the spheres to which the poems belong: that of literature and that of the labour movement. In connection with the rise of left-wing radicalism in Sweden during the 1960s and 1970s, Sjödin argued that older working-class literature contained important political experiences and perspectives. This is also how his works are sometimes viewed today, both by working-class writers and by political commentators. Thereby, it is emphasized that literature is not a passive medium for the preservation of memories, but that it can also transform them and make them politically relevant.

Vitaalin pulpan hoito hampaissa, joissa on syviä kariesvaurioita2023Ingår i: Suomen hammaslaakarilehti, ISSN 0355-4090, Vol. 30, nr 3, s. 34-41Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [fi]

Vitaalin pulpan hoidon tarkoituksena on säilyttää pulpan puolustustoiminnot sekä välttää juurihoito, joka voi olla teknisesti haastava eikä aina onnistu toivotusti. ESE (European Society of Endodontology) on julkaissut suosituksen liittyen vitaalin pulpan hoitoon hampaissa, joissa on syviä kariesvaurioita. Suositus on osittain yhteneväinen Pohjoismaissa käytössä olevien kansallisten suositusten kanssa.

Hampaissa, joissa on syviä kariesvaurioita, pulpan tilan arviointiin liittyy ratkaisemattomia kysymyksiä. Lisäksi on vaikea arvioida, milloin paljastunut pulpa on vaurioitunut palautumattomasti.

Mini-invasiivisilla menetelmillä, joissa hyödynnetään hiljattain kehitettyjä kalsiumsilikaattisementtejä, on saatu lupaavia tuloksia juurihoidon välttämiseen tähtäävissä vitaalin pulpan hoidoissa. Vitaalin pulpan hoitomenetelmiä kehitetään edelleen, ja kliinisiin suosituksiin on odotettavissa muutoksia.

Listening with Elephant Ears: Contesting Exclusion at the Intersection of Virtuosity and Ableism2023Ingår i: Resonance: Journal of Sound and Culture, E-ISSN 2688-867X, Vol. 4, nr 1, s. 88-108Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article addresses Listening with Elephant Ears, a contemporary music composition and performance created by the author together with the Elefantöra (Elephant Ear) ensemble. Elefantöra is a norm-critical music ensemble that includes both disabled and non-disabled musicians. When musicians are defined as disabled, normative assumptions regarding the correct use of musical instruments and expert definitions of good sound generate rehabilitative approaches to music that perpetuate exclusions of ableism. This article examines the intersections that exist between exclusions of ableism and exclusions based on musical virtuosity. It focuses on the ways in which Elefantöra contests both exclusions of ableism and virtuosity in their creative reappropriations of sound technology. Composed in the fall of 2020 as a collaborative artistic research engagement, Listening with Elephant Ears was first performed at the Lund Contemporary Music Festival in Sweden, October 2021. The article draws on ethnographic and sound material generated from my artistic research engagement with Elefantöra. Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, Listening with Elephant Ears actively reappropriates the Zoom video conference software as a music technology. The piece embraces Zoom’s limitations and emphasizes the aesthetic value of the audio distortions and digital interference that Zoom introduces into musical performance. Critiquing regimes of regulation that situate disabled musicians differently to non-disabled musicians, Listening with Elephant Ears applies care as a theoretical perspective from which to reflect critically on rehabilitative approaches to music and the associated exclusions of ableism and musical virtuosity.

Exploring differences in and factors influencing self-efficacy for competence in interprofessional collaborative practice among health professions students2023Ingår i: Journal of Interprofessional Care, ISSN 1356-1820, E-ISSN 1469-9567, s. 1-9Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The value of health care delivered via effective interprofessional teams has created an imperative for interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP). To inform IPE strategies, we investigated differences in perceived self-efficacy (SE) for competence in ICP among health professions students. Study data was collected between 2015-2019 from students from 13 different programs (N=3,496) before an annual institutional interprofessional program. Students completed the IPECC-SET, a validated instrument evaluating perceived SE for competence in ICP, and rated their 1) amount of previous contact with, and 2) perceived understanding of the role of different health professions.  Student groups were compared using parametric statistics. Regression analyses explored factors influencing SE for competence in ICP. Findings revealed significant differences in perceived SE for competence in ICP between programs (p<.05). Specifically, health information management/health informatics, dental, medicine, and nursing students expressed relatively higher SE, whereas physical and occupational therapy students expressed relatively lower SE. Perceived understanding of the role of health care professions (p<.01) and gender (p<.01) contributed significantly to predict perceived SE for competence in ICP, while amount of previous contact with other health professions did not (p=.42).  Findings highlight the value of IPE designed with consideration of specific learner needs.

    Vitale pulpabehandlinger i tænder med profund caries2023Ingår i: Tandlægebladet, ISSN 0039-9353, Vol. 127, s. 36-44Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [da]

The Ukraine war and the emergence of the European commission as a geopolitical actor2023Ingår i: Journal of European Integration, ISSN 0703-6337, E-ISSN 1477-2280, s. 1-21Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The European Commission has traditionally held a weak position in the policy domain of EU security and defence policy and has been seen as a ‘least likely’ case of supranational integration. Nevertheless, in recent years, the Commission has steadily expanded its role and ambition within this policy field – a process which gained in momentum after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Thus, this article investigates how the war in Ukraine has led to the establishment of new security and defence initiatives and to a stronger geopolitical role for the Commission. This paper theorises that the war in Ukraine is serving as an engine of integration. The article traces how the Commission seizes the windows of opportunity created by crises to strategically expand its mandate on security and defence policy and in the development of the sanctions policy regime.

Saving time for activation or relationships? The legitimation and performance of automated decision-making for time efficiency in two street-level bureaucracies serving poor and unemployed clients2023Ingår i: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, s. 1-13Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In the last decade, digitalized automated decision-making (ADM) has been implemented in many Swedish municipal social services to achieve values such as legal security, client empowerment and time efficiency. The paper aims to understand how ADM policy is legitimized and performed through time efficiency, by a comparison of ADM policy in two Swedish municipalities’ social assistance agencies. It builds on 17 interviews with managers and professionals in two Swedish municipalities’ social assistance units. Findings show ADM is legitimized through arguments of activation and relationships, and performed by handling more applications or increasing time spent with clients, rather than being perceived as increasing the quality of social assistance services. This highlights the significance of organizational goals regarding how street-level bureaucrats perform tasks within their discretionary powers.

Evaluation Paradoxes: Responding to Tensions Between Stability and Change in Social Investment Evaluation2023Ingår i: American Journal of Evaluation, ISSN 1098-2140, E-ISSN 1557-0878Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The relationship between stability and change is a central paradox of administration that pervades all forms of organizing. Evaluation is not unfamiliar with paradoxical objectives and roles, which can result in tensions for evaluators and stakeholders. In this article, paradoxes between stability and change in the implementation of evaluation, and responses to them, are investigated through the case of social investment funds in Swedish local government. From interviews with staff, managers, and evaluators, findings show how responses to four main paradoxes give priority to top-down summative evaluation that produces instrumental knowledge on outcomes and costs for decision makers. The responses show that the concept of social investment fund evaluation is elastic to contain paradoxes and address different audiences. Also, paradoxes within the structure of the organization develop into paradoxes concerning the roles and goals of evaluation, raising the question of whether individual actors can deal with paradoxes.

Digitalization, stress, and social worker–client relationships during the COVID-19 pandemic2023Ingår i: Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1468-0173, E-ISSN 1741-296XArtikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed the possibilities for people to interact and communicate. This article examines Swedish social workers’ experiences of the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the use of digital tools in their work, and whether this use has affected the social worker–client relationship and their stress levels. The article draws on a web survey (N  =  541) via a quantitative analysis of responses and a qualitative analysis of answers to an open-ended question.

Findings: Most respondents agreed on experiencing increased use of digital tools in the relationship with the clients, increased skills in using digital tools, and a more positive view of digital tools in the social worker–client relationship. However, experiences on whether stress levels had increased and the relationship with the clients worsened, were divided. Age correlates positively with increased stress levels, and social workers working with social assistance, as well as women, are more likely to agree on that the relationship with the clients has worsened. Responses from open-ended questions highlight a rapid shift where social workers have gained a more positive view of digital tools, that video meetings can increase efficiency and flexibility, but also work environment problems.

Applications: This article contributes with useful insights into how the use of digital tools during the COVID-19 pandemic has changed and affected stress and the social worker–client relationship. It can support discussions on the future implementation of digital tools in social work after the pandemic.

A Scoping Review of Research Exploring Working Life Practices of People with Disabilities During the COVID-19 Pandemic2023Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research, ISSN 1501-7419, E-ISSN 1745-3011, Vol. 25, nr 1, s. 241-255Artikel, forskningsöversikt (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

There have been numerous research studies stating the fact that the pandemic affected people with disabilities’ working lives. Less research has been conducted on how people with disabilities coped with and learned from these challenges. This scoping review maps research conducted in the field of disability research and multidisciplinary research, published from the outbreak of the pandemic until October 31, 2022. The focus is on how people with disabilities adapted their working lives to the conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and what working practices and strategies they applied to manage the situation. From an extensive search in bibliographic databases, eight research articles were identified. The review results reveal both challenges and new openings for the working life of people with disabilities post-pandemic. Implications for future research are identified, addressing intersectionality, hybrid work environments, digital gaps and increased participation of people with disabilities in research.

Studenters arbete med respons: förstår de vad jag menar?2023Ingår i: Högre Utbildning, E-ISSN 2000-7558, Vol. 13, nr 2, s. 29-42Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [sv]

Bureaucratic configuration and discretion in asylum case processing: the case of the EUAA in Greece2023Ingår i: Comparative Migration Studies, ISSN 2214-8590, E-ISSN 2214-594X, Vol. 11, nr 1, artikel-id 22Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article takes an in-depth look at caseworkers at the European Union Asylum Agency in Greece. The agency’s increased role in asylum case processing and the emergence of the called “integrated European administration” is an unusual but nevertheless critical case to study for scholars of European asylum bureaucracies. Previous research into member state’s national migration authorities has shown that discretionary decision-making is widely deployed by asylum caseworkers. Generally, street-level bureaucrats tend to ‘reinterpret’ policy and creatively make use of the legal framework of the Common European Asylum System in order to make their day-to-day operations run more smoothly and resolve ethical dilemmas. However, this article finds that in the case of the European Union Asylum Agency, the compartmentalized institutional arrangement and short-term contracts removes both the incentive and ability for caseworkers to creatively reinterpret policy and deploy discretionary practices. It is therefore argued that scholars of asylum bureaucracy in Europe must pay increased attention to how the bureaucratic configuration of migration authorities.

Health, social, and dental professionals’ experiences of working within an extended home-visit program in the child healthcare: A qualitative interview study in Sweden2023Ingår i: BMC Health Services Research, E-ISSN 1472-6963, Vol. 23, artikel-id 820Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

The goal of the Swedish child healthcare system is to reach all children with health-promotive actions and to create equal health opportunities for all children. In that context, an extended home-visit program – called Grow Safely – for first-time parents, with an interprofessional collaboration between child healthcare nurses, midwives, social workers, and dental assistants, was initiated. The current study aims at illuminating and evaluating the health, social, and dental professionals’ experiences of working within this program and how such collaboration could benefit the professions.

    Methods

A qualitative method was chosen, and 13 interviews were carried out with professionals working within child healthcare centers that participated in an extended home-visit program in the southernmost part of Sweden. The interviews were analyzed via Burnard’s approach to content analysis.

    Results

The results showed that it was satisfying for the health, social, and dental professionals to work with the home-visit program and that they encountered positive feelings among the parents receiving it. The creation of deep conversations and parents opening up about feelings that could otherwise be shameful to express, was a positive aspect of the home visits. A negative aspect was the difficulty of handling the (sometimes necessary) interpretation over the phone during the visits, and another one was the fact that the visits were time-consuming and required logistical planning. Overall, the professionals were positive about the home-visit program in that they felt that they were able to give the families what they needed and to have discussions on sensitive issues. They also appreciated the fact that different professions collaborated in order to reach the same goal.

    Conclusions

This study showed that the health, social, and dental professionals enjoyed working with the home-visit program and that they encountered positive feelings among the parents regarding the collaborative visits being conducted within the home, where the families felt safe and relaxed. Despite the extended time required and the logistical challenges involved, the professionals expressed that the home visits created a deeper collaboration amongst them.

Learning about Sharing Authority With the Gathered Voices of Malmö2023Ingår i: Oral History Review, ISSN 0094-0798, E-ISSN 1533-8592, Vol. 50, nr 2, s. 206-222Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

For more than two years we were involved in a collaborative process with the aim of finding out how sharing life stories could ensure “the right to the city” in Malmö, Sweden. This process led to the formation of the Gathered Voices of Malmö, an association for social justice oral history that strives to become a community archive. This article is about how sharing authority was interpreted collectively in the collaborative process when it could not be directly translated into Swedish, and how those interpretations reflect back on sharing authority as an intellectual development. Drawing upon documents created during the collaborative process and interviews with our coparticipants, we revisit what we learned, including our rereading of sharing authority’s genealogy through project-based research. As participants in, and then analysts of, that process, we learned that our trouble with translating sharing authority was not only linguistic, but also had to do with how the approach might conceal community-embedded ways of working, instead normalizing participatory practices which center research rather than community as the primary sphere in which important learnings are made. We suggest that a deeper consideration of the differences between “a shared authority” and “sharing authority” could help us avoid making participation the best practice.

Accuracy of the Swedish quality registry for caries and periodontal diseases (SKaPa) – evaluation in 6- and 12-year-olds in the region of Värmland, Sweden2023Ingår i: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, ISSN 0001-6357, E-ISSN 1502-3850, Vol. 81, nr 8, s. 615-621Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives This study evaluates the agreement of data on dental caries between electronic dental records and data retrieved from the national SKaPa-registry (Swedish Quality Registry for caries and periodontal disease), with special reference to e/M in deft/DMFT.

Methods In a random sample of 500 6- and 12-year-old children having received dental care in 2014 in the county region of Värmland, Sweden, the diagnostic accuracy of data in electronic dental records with corresponding data obtained from the SKaPa-registry was compared by using Cohen’s Kappa and Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC).

Results For dft/DFT the Kappa was 0.95, and ICC 0.98 (total population). For deft/DMFT in the total population the Kappa was 0.80 and ICC 0.96. For 6-year-olds (deft) the Kappa was 0.89 and ICC 0.99 and for 12-year-olds (DMFT) the Kappa was 0.70, and ICC 0.83. The corresponding figures for Kappa and ICC when excluding individuals without caries (deft/DMFT = 0) were: Total population 0.63 and 0.94; 6-year-olds 0.79 and 0.99; 12-year-olds 0.42 and 0.68.

Conclusion Agreement between data in the dental records and SKaPa was very high for dft/DFT confirming that transfer from the dental records to the SKaPa-registry is safe and correct. As the accuracy of deft/DMFT was considerably lower than for dft/DFT we advise against using deft/DMFT data from SKaPa for research purposes at this point.

    Etikprövning och uppgifter om hälsa2023Ingår i: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift, ISSN 0037-833X, Vol. 100, nr 2, s. 378-387Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [sv]

Periradicular surgery: A longitudinal registry study of 10‐year outcomes and factors predictive of post‐surgical extraction2023Ingår i: International Endodontic Journal, ISSN 0143-2885, E-ISSN 1365-2591Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: This historical prospective cohort study of the adult population of Sweden is based on data from a national registry: the primary aim was to evaluate the long-term survival of teeth after periradicular surgery. A secondary aim was to identify factors predictive of extraction within 10 years of registration of periradicular surgery.

Methodology: The cohort consisted of all individuals who had undergone periradicular surgery to treat apical periodontitis, as reported to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (SSIA) during 2009. The cohort was followed until December 31, 2020. Subsequent registrations of extractions were collected for Kaplan-Meier survival analyses and survival tables. The patients' sex, age, dental service provider and tooth group were also retrieved from SSIA. Only one tooth per individual was included in the analyses. Multivariable regression analysis was used and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The reporting guidelines STROBE and PROBE were followed.

Results: After data cleaning, and exclusion of 157 teeth, 5 622 teeth/individuals remained for analysis. The mean age of the individuals at the time of the periradicular surgery was 60.5 years (range 20-97, standard deviation 13.31); 55% were women. At the end of the follow-up, that is, up to 12 years, a total of 34.1% of the teeth had been reported as extracted. The multivariate logistic regression analysis, based on follow-up data at 10 years after registration of the periradicular surgery, included 5 548 teeth, of which 1 461 (26.3%) had been extracted. Significant associations between the independent variables tooth group and dental care setting (both P < 0.001) and the dependent variable extraction were found. The highest odds ratio (OR) for extraction applied to tooth group: compared to maxillary incisors and canines, mandibular molars were at greatest risk of extraction (OR 2.429, confidence interval 1.975-2.987, P < 0.001).

Conclusions: After periradicular surgery in predominantly elderly people in Sweden, approximately three quarters of the teeth are retained over a 10-year period. The type of tooth is associated with extraction: mandibular molars are at greater risk of extraction than maxillary incisors and canines.

    Going to the Dogs2023Ingår i: PARSE Journal, E-ISSN 2002-0953, nr 16Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

On his fourteenth journey to South Africa, Oscar Hemer repeatedly comes across the casual expression “going to the dogs” and starts reflecting on dogs and other companion species with regards to his ongoing exploration of “speculative anthropology”. When does something go to the dogs? Is there a correlation between contaminated diversity and decline? Even though contamination may appear to be a hopeless motto for political mobilisation at present, he arrives at the conclusion that it is the only option for a country—and a planet—increasingly pressured by essentialisms of multiple varieties that all counteract the fine balance of everyday conviviality.

The chronological travel account from March 2022 is juxtaposed with a parallel text, written before and after (October in Berlin), which from a slightly altered perspective reflects on the process and the form of the “Conviviality and Contamination” project.

Farewell to the Rainbow Nation?: a conversation between Oscar Hemer, Bronwyn Law-Viljoen, Masande Ntshanga and Ivan Vladislavic2023Ingår i: PARSE Journal, E-ISSN 2002-0953, nr 16Artikel i tidskrift (Övrig (populärvetenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

More than a quarter of a century since Nelson Mandela became the country’s first democratically elected president, the racial categories of apartheid live on in South Africa. The proud vision of the “Rainbow Nation” is now being challenged by various forms of populism, with racial thinking as the common denominator. How can one advocate for non-racism and cosmopolitanism—in South Africa and the world—without being perceived as a defender of the privileges of the white minority? Oscar Hemer, Professor of the Arts at Malmö University, considers these questions in discussion with South African author colleagues Masande Ntshanga, Ivan Vladislavić and Bronwyn Law-Viljoen.

Queering the glass ceiling: alpha females, cyborgs, and the non-tenure track in science2023Ingår i: Gender and Education, ISSN 0954-0253, E-ISSN 1360-0516, Vol. 35, nr 6-7, s. 537-551Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This inquiry into the nature of feminist solidarity in the academic sciences is guided by the intra-activity of gendered bodies in teaching-intensive faculty positions. It uses diffractive methodology to examine how response-able research practice can account for enactment of social discourse through agential cuts. Over the course of a two-year ethnography in a university with high research activity, gender performativity in the contested space of feminized teaching and masculine science was analysed. This article aims to make visible how researcher subjectivities entangle with data collection. Results show how specific agential cuts – alpha female, silencing, less-than-person, squashing passion, and staying to get tenure – illuminate a unique diffractive pattern. The pattern troubles structural notions of feminist solidarity, as ethnographic participants marginalized by institutional hierarchies survive by queering it. Furthermore, the inquiry gestures towards a humble, local, and tentative contribution to post-human theorizing on ‘queering the glass ceiling’.

Countering Discourses of Derision: Moving towards Action in Teacher Education in the USA and Sweden2023Ingår i: Education Sciences, E-ISSN 2227-7102, Vol. 13, nr 7, artikel-id 635Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article is about how negative discourses of teacher education position teacher educators and how they might influence or inspire action. We use self-study methods to investigate the political dimension of teacher education in two national contexts: Sweden and the USA. More specifically, we examine the emotions stirred by the positioning related to being a teacher educator and how those emotions can be used to take a line to and resist boundaries that limit us within the profession in the two contexts. We aim to contribute to the self-study field by emphasizing a political dimension, in addition to the personal and professional dimensions of teacher education more often studied by scholars. Using the concepts of positionality, emotions, liminality, and action, we conclude that the liminal spaces offered us time to think about the emotions we have experienced due to the derisive discourses that position us in negative ways as teacher educators, and with that thinking came opportunities to reflect on our identity as teacher educators and what we look to accomplish as teacher educators. A new understanding of liminality as a space of possibility has boosted us to take action. An important conclusion is that emotional labor can be a hindrance in relation to teacher educator action, while emotions can act as clues for opportunities of growth and action. Telling our stories opened space for us to use our emotions to take a line to and resist the derogatory discourse, engage in the political, and move closer to becoming teacher educator activists.

Parallel lines: tensions in teachers’ enactment of the vision of a newly established school in Sweden2023Ingår i: Teachers and Teaching: theory and practice, ISSN 1354-0602, E-ISSN 1470-1278, s. 1-18Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to share new knowledge about tensions in establishing a new school in a marketised educational landscape, with a special focus on teachers’ experiences of enacting a highly profiled vision. The paper is based on a single case study using observations, surveys, interviews and document studies. To cover the complex enactment process, we have created a multilayered enactment triangle to analyse the enactment process of the school and strategies the teachers use to realise the vision. To be able to hold on to the vision when the first generation of students arrive, the teachers in this study connect the vision to a more abstract ‘future school’. Meanwhile, in the daily practice in the ‘present school’, they perceive difficulties in working in line with the vision. The relations between teachers and vision and the relations between teachers and students, respectively, become parallel lines. It seems then, that for visionary work to function from the start in a newly established school, all the relations in the enactment triangle, i.e. between the vision and the teachers, the vision and the students, and the teachers and the students, need to be there.
