Fifty Years of Solidarity: Exploring the Swedish Social Democratic Party’s Conception of Solidarity in Restrictive Entry Policies 1970-20202021Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The field of Global Politics has largely overlooked the concept of solidarity. In an attempt to invoke the theoretical significance of this nebulous idea, the study explored the meanings and scales of political solidarity articulated by the Swedish Social Democratic Party (SAP). Drawing on interdisciplinary research, the Swedish Socialist Democratic Party’s articulations of solidarity in immigration policy stances, party programs, and first of May speeches were explored through an interpretive tradition. By mapping the progressive enlargement of SAP’s conception of solidarity in manifestations concerning global migration the continuity and changes to its various meanings and scales were displayed. Over the last fifty years, SAP’s conception of solidarity has largely configured in stability. Solidarity entailed the ones with whom we may have nothing in common but our humanity and the immigration entry-policy developments between 1970 and 2020 included minor steps toward openness but were restrictive for the most part. This engagement in the broader debate about open borders demonstrated solidarity’s vulnerability to the vicissitudes of history. Manifestations of solidarity by the current SAP government maintain an elusive terrain. Solidarity was the objective of the Swedish asylum policy but the absence of solidarity within the common European framework triggered an end to Swedish exceptionalism in terms of respect for and protection of human rights.

The Concept of Security in the Response to the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 12 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

A shift in the understanding of the concept of security after the cold war led the UNHCR to shift its actions from international protection to large-scale humanitarian interventions across the globe. The security discourse shifted from a state-focused one towards a more individual-focused one, taking into consideration new threats to the security of states and individuals. In the midst of all these interventions, the idea of protection remained prevalent in the discourse of the UNHCR and within the response plans to humanitarian crisis. Idea of protection that is also at the core of any definition of human security. Through a qualitative interpretative policy analysis of the 2019 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis, this research sought to analyse the discourse of security as understood by the actors involved, and mostly by the UNHCR.

American Economic hegemony – under threat or unsurpassable?: A statistical analysis of American Economic Hegemony and the potential threat of China in the international economic order.2021Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This essay focusses on the area of hegemonic studies in global politics, framing the discussion between the rise of China and the positioning of the united States. The purpose of this study is to show that China does not threaten the economic hegemony of the US due to the pivotal role the US Dollar holds in the global economy. A statistical analysis is undertaken with reference to contemporary theory to explain how declining rates of US Dollars in currency reserves are not a symptom of a power shift in Global Politics but simply an effect of fluctuations in global trade, as well as using Susan Strange's concept of structural power to show how America holds hegemony over international finance and the economy.

From Colonial Past to Colonial Future?: A Case Study of the Belt and Road Initiative in Kazakhstan2023Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 14 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Since its independence almost three decades ago, the nation-state of Kazakhstan has been nestled in a search for identity and unity. Located in a geographically strategic location between two of the world's most significant actors, and with a colonial history to one of them —the Soviet Union— the country's strive for identity in a self-determined world continues. Surrounding the influx of Chinese investments coming with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013, the country now sees the national political space drifting in a different direction. By looking at identity building and researching contemporary scholarly articles, and with aid from the methodology of a case study. This thesis aims to utilise postcolonial theory to analyse how and if Chinese investments through the BRI are the beginning of a new neocolonial in post-independent Kazakhstan and if the previously colonised country's identity, or lack thereof, is a leading factor in being more susceptible to Chinese influence in the twenty-first century. To conclude, this work presents new research on how the Kazakh nation responds to Chinese BRI and determines that a lack of national identity due to previous colonisation can increase susceptibility to new actors' influence later down the road.

Sociala Medier Inom Brottsprevention: Influensers eventuella möjlighet till informationsspridning2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

The Diffusion of Mllitarism?: Assesing the relationship between the militarization of public security in Mexico and the Northern Triangle of Central America2022Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 14 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Latin America has experienced a new militarization in the last five years despite its history filled with military dictatorships and authoritarian governments. Due to their high rates of violence and crime worldwide, the countries with the most severe militarization process are Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Therefore, this work seeks to find the relationship between the militarization of public security in the four countries.

To address the research question posed by this study, a mixed methodology based on quantitative and qualitative data was employed in conjunction with the theoretical framework of policy diffusion, a subdiscipline of International Relations that has gained relevancy for the past two decades. The findings indicated that a diffusion process occurred in multiple dimensions, first involving the United States and stemming from the interaction between the four countries. Furthermore, this work discusses the relationship between the diffusion process among the four countries with international norms.

    Whiteness2022Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The socially constructed phenomenon of whiteness: how it was created, how it changes, and how it protects and privileges people who are perceived as white.

This volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series examines the socially constructed phenomenon of whiteness, tracing its creation, its changing formation, and its power to privilege and protect people who are perceived as white. Whiteness, author Martin Lund explains, is not one single idea but a shifting, overarching category, a flexible cluster of historically, culturally, and geographically contingent ideals and standards that enable systems of hierarchical classification. Lund discusses words used to talk about whiteness, from white privilege to white fragility; the intersections of whiteness with race, class, and gender; whiteness in popular culture; and such ideas as “colorblindness” and “reverse racism,” which, he argues, actually uphold whiteness.

Lund shows why it is important to keep talking and thinking about whiteness. The word “whiteness,” he writes, doesn't describe; it conjures something into being. Drawing on decades of critical whiteness studies and citing a range of examples (primarily from the United States and Sweden), Lund argues that whiteness is continually manufactured and sustained through language, laws, policies, science, and representations in media and popular culture. It is often positioned as normative, even universal. And despite its innocuous-seeming manifestations in sitcoms and superheroes, whiteness is always in the service of racial domination.

How the gendered nationalism shapes China’s “wolf warrior diplomacy” and affects Chinese feminist cyber-activism?2023Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 14 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the intersections and implications of gendered nationalism and "Wolf Warrior Diplomacy" in China's foreign policy and domestic discourse. Gendered nationalism emphasizes the importance of gender roles and stereotypes in shaping national identity, while "Wolf Warrior Diplomacy" refers to China's more assertive and aggressive style of diplomacy. Through an analysis of scholarly articles, this study examines how these two concepts intersect and reinforce each other, as well as their impact on feminist activism and gender equality in China. The analysis reveals that gendered nationalism and "Wolf Warrior Diplomacy" are both rooted in a sense of national pride and identity. Traditional Chinese masculinity, with its emphasis on strength and courage, is often associated with defending China's interests and projecting power on the global stage. This masculinity is glorified and perpetuated through gendered language and symbols, reinforcing patriarchal power structures and marginalizing women in society.

The study also examines the implications of gendered nationalism and "Wolf Warrior Diplomacy" for feminist activism in China. Chinese feminist cyber-activism has emerged as a powerful force in recent years, using online platforms to challenge gender inequality and advocate for women's rights. However, these efforts have often faced resistance and repression from the Chinese government, which views feminist activism as a threat to its authority and legitimacy. The government's repression is justified by framing feminist activism as a challenge to national values and cultural traditions. Despite the challenges they face, Chinese feminist activists remain committed to promoting gender equality. Their efforts provide a counterbalance to the forces of gendered nationalism in Chinese society. However, the rise of gendered nationalism poses a question for feminists regarding the intersections between nationalism, gender, and activism under an authoritarian regime.

The findings of this thesis contribute to a better understanding of the complexities of gendered nationalism and "Wolf Warrior Diplomacy" in China's foreign policy. The study highlights the need to address the intersections between nationalism, gender, and activism to promote gender equality and challenge patriarchal power structures. It also underscores the importance of supporting and amplifying the voices of Chinese feminist activists in their quest for social change.

Icelandic Climate Politics: Ways Forward to a Green Welfare State?2023Ingår i: Climate Change and the Future of Europe: Views from the Capitals / [ed] Michael Kaeding; Johannes Pollak; Paul Schmidt, Cham: Springer, 2023, s. 139-142Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Various overlapping crises, climate change, conflicts around the world along with the COVID-19 pandemic seem to be symptomatic of this current era. All serve to highlight the commonalities of crises and how social differences such as age, class, gender, location, and education mean that not all people are affected in the same way. An exploration of Iceland’s climate goals demonstrates that social differences, are recognised to some extent and arguably more than in the European green deal. Iceland however needs to further address challenges related to heavy emitting industries, car-centrism, as well as tensions between urban and rural areas in the context of a sustainable future.

Sweden´s conflicting green leadership in the European Union2024Ingår i: European Politics and Society, ISSN 2374-5118, E-ISSN 2374-5126Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines the nuanced dynamics of green leadership within the European Union (EU), focusing on Sweden. Sweden has long been heralded as an exemplar of environmental and climate leadership within the European Union as well as a frontrunner in the adoption of green policies, notably in the realms of bioenergy and biofuels. However, its leadership stance has come under scrutiny due to the inherent conflicts within green initiatives, often referred to as ‘green-green dilemmas’ that arise when environmental actions, despite their sustainable intentions, clash over competing interests. Drawing on a variety of sources we delve into the complexities surrounding Sweden's green leadership. The article highlights how Sweden’s enthusiastic endorsement of bioenergy and biofuels, integral to its climate action strategy, has sparked debates and raised questions about Sweden´s perceived green leadership within the European Union. Sweden's approach to navigating these conflicts, alongside its efforts to negotiate and balance economic interests with environmental ambitions, offers a compelling insight into the challenges of maintaining green leadership in the face of conflicting green agendas.

Understanding policymaking in times of institutional change.: An analysis of actorship in the negotiations surrounding the Channel Tunnel in the context of Brexit.2023Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This Bachelor thesis discusses the process of decision-making and the actors involved in the negotiations of the Channel Tunnel. The Channel Tunnel Fixed link is situated between France and the UK, the interconnected region forms the Transmanche region. The Channel Tunnel is an infrastructure that has not just brought and further integrated both sides of the Channel but has become an important asset for connecting the UK to the rest of Europe. In 2016 it was announced that the UK would leave the EU, the previous agreements surrounding the infrastructure of the Channel Tunnel fixed link needed to be renegotiated. This research uses the theoretical framework of Multi-Level Governance to analyse what are the decision-making process that took place during the negotiation of the Channel Tunnel fixed link. The research uses qualitative method, it focuses on the Qualitative Network Analysis to analyse the levels of governance the actors belong to.

The research has determined that the decision-making process is both very structured and fixed, yet the UK influenced the outcome of the decision-making by demanding the withdrawal of the EU in the negotiations. Overall, the final policymaking process was the result of centralised decisions being taken at the level of the state in France and in the UK, which may create gaps in representing the interests of actors at the microlevel (locally or within the regions), and at the macrolevel (Other EU member states).

DIY Urbanism in Africa: Politics and Practice2024Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Protracted economic crises, accelerating inequalities, and increased resource scarcity present significant challenges for the majority of Africa's urban population. Limited state capacity and widespread infrastructure deficiencies common in cities across the continent often require residents to draw on their own resources, knowledge, and expertise to resolve these life and livelihood dilemmas.

DIY Urbanism in Africa investigates these practices. It develops a theoretical framework through which to analyze them, and it presents a series of case studies to demonstrate how residents invent new DIY tactics and strategies in response to security, place-making, or economic problems.

This book offers a timely critical intervention into literatures on urban development and politics in Africa. It is valuable to students, policymakers, and urban practitioners keen to understand the mechanisms and political implications of widespread dynamics now shaping Africa's expanding urban environments.

Conceptualisations of citizenship in Sweden and the United Kingdom: an empirical study and analysis of how ‘citizenship’ is understood in policy and by policy-makers2009Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This empirical study identifies and analyses what conceptualisations of citizenship emerge in policy thinking around naturalisation and how these conceptualisations have been articulated in citizenship policy and by policy-makers in the two specific cases of the United Kingdom and Sweden. Understanding citizenship as a bounded membership status the research is grounded in a view of citizenship as having content: rights and duties, ideas of identity, perceived virtues or political values. Employing an interpretive methodology the study closely analyses the central policy documents from the period 1994-2007. It also extensively draws on material from over thirty in-depth elite interviews with policy-makers. These include David Blunkett and Ulrica Messing, the ministers responsible during the development of the key changes to citizenship legislation in the respective countries. In the Swedish case the thesis argues that five conceptualisations form the ideational context in which policy articulations of citizenship take place. Interplaying ideas of integration, equality and belonging are reinforced by conceptualisations of citizenship as about a „welcoming‟ symbolism and as „responding to a global, internationalising context‟. In the UK case five conceptualisations also emerge. A strong interlocking of thinking about integration and belonging provides citizenship policy‟s ideational foundation. Adding depth and complexity to this are ideas about diversity, „common values‟, and the presentation of citizenship acquisition as a „journey‟. The final section of the study analyses and compares the findings from the two specific cases. In considering the policy tone around naturalisation it contrasts the attention given to individual effort in the UK with the accentuation of entitlement in Sweden. It also highlights different conceptual approaches to belonging and its relationship with citizenship; with belonging strongly connected to identity in the UK but to the idea of emotional certainty and security in Sweden. This is argued to reflect distinct beliefs about where evolving ideas about citizenship create demands for change. In Sweden, legislative opening to dual citizenship was conceptualised as a necessary response expected of the state. In the UK, the introduction of citizenship tests was conceptualised as the establishment of a legitimate demand on individuals. Approaches in the two cases are also shown to differ in where emphasis lies in ideas about diversity‟s relationship with citizenship. The UK downplays notions of ethnicity while the Swedish conceptualisation accepts pluralism as the reality of contemporary globalisation.

Energy Politics and Justice: An Ecofeminist Ethical Analysis of the Swedish Parliamentarian Debate2022Ingår i: Ethics, Policy & Environment, ISSN 2155-0085, E-ISSN 2155-0093Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We contribute to the scientific debate by studying the storylines, discourses and related normative judgments in parliamentary motions by private members of the Swedish parliament from the time period 2010–2019. The paper makes use of an ecofeminist theoretical framework to problematize these storylines, discourses and normative judgments. We conclude that the focus in the material is on economic and technical issues, while issues of justice play a marginal role. None of the important dimensions of energy justice are adequately considered and many of the dominant storylines and discourses are based on the implicit assumption that issues of justice are insignificant.

Understanding the Implications of Blockchain Technology for Power and Democracy in Global Governance2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 14 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Since the invention of Bitcoin in 2008, the field of International Relations has grappled with the impact of its underlying technology – blockchain – on broader social dynamics. This paper seeks to contribute to a niche in existing literature that views blockchain as an instrument for more effective global governance, by studying the technology’s implications for power and democracy. I adopt a theoretical perspective, rooted in the English School, and complemented by classical theories on structural power and pluralist democracy. It is applied in an exploratory qualitative study, carried out in two phases: (1) exploratory data analysis and (2) directed qualitative content analysis. The results indicate that the power dynamics that blockchain introduces are intertwined with its effect on democracy in global governance. Blockchain solutions that support existing governance apparatus could help to improve their democratic character, whereas transformational changes bring uncertainty for how emerging systems would operate and entail a risk of deepened inequality. Additionally, trust is identified as a core issue in this debate, and eroding it could have a detrimental effect on democracy. Thereby, technological expertise, being a precondition for structural power, is highlighted as a deciding factor for understanding blockchain’s impact.

The International Criminal Question in Uganda: An analysis of the International Criminal Court Interventions in Uganda2023Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 40 poäng / 60 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The conflict in northern Uganda between the Government of Uganda and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) began in 1986 and lasted for more than twenty years, despite efforts for a peaceful resolution. The contribution  of civil society, including religious groups, traditional organizations, and community self-help groups shouldnot be under estimated in promoting grassroot peace building in northern Uganda. Civil society groups in northern Uganda provided alternative reports, exposed atrocities against civilians, facilitated negotiations, promoted reconciliation, supported livilihoods, and influenced external peace interventions during the Juba peace talks. However, the peace talks and reconciliation process in Juba yielded no positive results, and the conflict was referred by the government to the ICC in 2003.  This thesis examines this conflict and the various ICC interventions in Uganda. The focus of this thesis is on the nexus between the ICC's involvement and the judicial process in the country. The Museveni effect, war crimes and crimes against humanity, crimes of aggression, and the provision of justice to the victims of the war in the northern Uganda are therefore believed by Ugandan civil society to have influenced the ICC's interventions in Uganda's legal sector. The conclusions of the thesis reveal that the ICC contributed to the peace process in the country by promoting accountablity to the law and by contributing to the deterance of future atrocities through its actions and activities in Uganda. At the centre of investigations, this thesis employs the theories of neo-colonialism and constructivism.

Keywords: Uganda, Civil Society, International Criminal Court, Fugitive, Lord's Resistance Army, war crimes, crimes against humanity, Constructivism, Neo-colonialism, Intervention, Principle.

The AKP and Turkeys President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has long been dealing with the Kurdish issue in Turkey, as it has impacted Turkish domestic political aspects and other foreign policy behaviors through the Middle East. Although the Kurdish issue in Turkey is seen as a security danger to the entire nation, it also has global implications, to which Turkey has responded with foreign policy behaviors. This thesis seeks to describe the influence of the Kurdish issue on Turkish foreign policy behaviors. Through a neoclassical realist perspective, a systemic viewpoint is considered to analyze Turkey's attitude towards the broader geopolitical Kurdish context, including the Kurdish political, militarization, and historical factors that influence power dynamics in the Middle East. Additionally, domestic factors, such as ideational factors, will be considered, revealing more about the Turkish internal policy on the Kurdish issue that influences its foreign policy towards its neighboring states. Through this study, it is presented that Turkey's historical experiences of the geopolitical Kurdish issue, and that the domestic political struggles between the AKP and the pro-Kurdish parties have been playing a crucial role in impacting the Turkish foreign policy behaviors. The AKP and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan continue to perceive the Kurdish issue in Turkey today as an existential security threat. As a result, this perception has driven the regional militarization of the Kurdish threat in Iraq and Syria.

Fighters' motivations for joining extremist groups: Investigating the attractiveness of the Right Sector's Volunteer Ukrainian Corps2023Ingår i: European Journal of International Security, ISSN 2057-5637, E-ISSN 2057-5645, Vol. 8, nr 1, s. 47-69Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In 2014, eight years prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian-backed separatists seized parts of the Ukrainian regions Luhansk and Donetsk. Shortly thereafter, thousands of Ukrainians voluntarily enrolled to various paramilitary battalions. Unlike the Right Sector's Volunteer Ukrainian Corps (RS VUC), almost all battalions were incorporated into Ukrainian official defence structures. Applying uncertainty-identity theory and based on interviews, observations, and documents, this study investigates the attractiveness of RS VUC prior to the 2022 war, motivating the fighters to join this organisation and to remain in it. The study found that fighters of RS VUC distrusted society, the wider population, and state authorities. RS VUC, with its high fighting morale, discipline, family-like relationships between fighters, as well as its clear ideology and boundaries between 'us' and 'them', were attractive to the fighters since its unambiguous group prototypes and high entitativity, reduced the fighters' self-uncertainty regarding their social identity in an uncertain environment. The findings also revealed that the fighters' choice to join RS VUC can be understood as a rational decision, since RS VUC's group entitativity provided the fighters with moral and emotional benefits, as well as maximised their chances of survival.

Do Afghan women need saving?: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Laura Bush’s representation of the women in Afghanistan2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 12 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Do Afghan women need saving? This study focuses on the discourse of the USA’s First Lady Mrs. Laura Bush in the years (2001-2009) and how she represents the women in Afghanistan in the context of the USA-led intervention in Afghanistan. My aim is to understand how the USA intervention can be legitimized through Mrs. Bush’s argumentation of bringing human rights to Afghan women. In the analysis in this thesis, Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis is used in combination with feminist and postcolonial theory to understand her discourse about the women in Afghanistan and how her resulting discourse functions in connection with the USA-led intervention in Afghanistan. The study concludes that Mrs. Bush constructs the Afghan women as in need of help and in connection the USA as the helping hand who have an obligation to save the women in Afghanistan. In combination with strategic use of ‘embedded feminism’ and an oriental discourse Mrs. Bush’s discourse functions to make the USA-led intervention in Afghanistan seem legitimate.

Making Wars Look Right: A Comparative Study on How the U.S. and Russia Justified Their Invasions2023Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 12 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to analyse the war justifications given by President George W. Bush before the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 and President Vladimir Putin before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The analysis will be conducted with two speeches using comparative qualititative content analysis method given by both Presidents prior to their respective invasions. With the help of enemy image and framing theory as well as looking at rhetorical tactics used by both Presidents, the study will aim to answer the research questions of how the enemy and "us" are described, what is the threath and what is the solution for it, in the speeches. Followed by comparing the results of both war justifications. The aim of the study is to further develop the theoretical understanding of enemy image, framing and rhetorical tactic use in war justifications. The findings in the study indicate the use of enemy images and framing theory in the speeches to justify the invasions. In addition, both Presidents have apparent similarities in the use of enemy images, framing and rhetorical tactics use in their war justifications.

The International Conference on the GreatLakes Region: Analysis of the organization's efforts to transform the conflict in the Great Lakes Region2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 12 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Since the 1990s the Great Lakes Region has continued to be mired in intractable conflict, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) being at the center of it. The aim of this study is therefore an attempt to understand how the InternationalConference of the Great Lakes Region has fared in the transformation of conflict in the region, through its attempts in the DRC. For the purpose of the study, conflict transformation as presented by John Paul Lederachwas used as a theory of analyzing the selected peace efforts by the ICGLR. Furthermore, the data used in the study were secondary data which consists of archival records and documentation. The study revealed two key issues in the ICGLR’s approach to peace attempts in DRC; it showed that there are gaps in the conflict transformation approach of the earlier attempts by the ICGL, which favored more political solutions. Secondly, a rethink of the approach revealed a much more robust approach, which seeks to address not only the political conflicts but also seeks to address the historical and structural conflicts in the region. However, with the positive change in the approach, there are still high levels of conflict in the DRC.

‘Problems’ of Biological Security: A Foucauldian Discourse Analysis of NATO’s ‘Problem’ Representation of Novel Biological Threats2022Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (konstnärlig kandidatexamen), 12 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In the current post-pandemic climate biosecurity has emerged as a topic of importance and has further played a dominant role in regard to governance throughout the pandemic. Specifically, NATO’s latest set of policy recommendations to transatlantic biosecurity is the subject of scrutiny in this study, with the findings implying a discursive process of militarization. Guided by Bacchi’s WPR approach (2009), a poststructuralist policy analysis, this study sets out to oust the‘problem’ representations in NATO’s discourse and the logics that underpin them. Additionally, concepts of risk management and the Post-Copenhagen School support the identification of ‘problem’ representations identified aligned with the research purpose. Unexpected the vast body of academic literature ill attempts to produce counter discourse, where this research is embedded. This study argues from the analysis that a discourse originating from the conventionalist security-realm is dominating contemporary conceptions of biosecurity, whilst silencing others. What the NATO report manages to present is a very tangible threat actor with an increasing horizon of possibility of hostile bio-acts, of yet fearsome, unknown character, although what is left opaque is the role of Mother Nature. The study reflects on the motivation of the attempted discursive practice to channel biosecurity into a security-realm, which omits threats of ecological character and solely promoting the existential threat to derive from man. Which finally, is used to justify restrains to public engagement and openness.

Non-ideal theory comparison of Sen's capability approach and Therborn's theory on inequalities: Comparison to a non-ideal theory framework to address health inequalities2022Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis conducts a theory comparison to determine which theory of social justice is best suited to address health inequalities. The theories used are the capability approach by Amartya Sen and Göran Therborn's theory on inequalities. Within the capability approach, two accounts specified on health capabilities will be regarded as well. These are the health capability approach by Ruger and the theory of health justice by Venkatapuram. The theory comparison is done by making use of a non-ideal theory framework, based on the theory by John Rawls and the critiques on it given by several authors, as well as the developments in the ideal/non-ideal theory debate. Non-ideal theory provides guidance towards reducing inequalities and enhancing justice and can therefore be useful for a theory on health inequalities. The developed non-ideal theory framework consists of five criteria to which the respective theories are compared to determine whether they fulfil the criteria. Comparing the theories to the framework will give an insight in which theory is best suited for reducing health inequalities. Therborn's theory on inequalities has proven to fulfil most of the criteria in the non-ideal theory framework and can therefore be regarded as best suited to reduce health inequalities.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: Work-life balance, kvinnliga tjänstemän, stress, krav, kontroll, stöd, flexibilitet, tillgänglighet, tjänstemannens roll, arbetstidslagen, gränslöst arbete.

Cirkulär hållbarhetsstrategi inom befintliga kommersiella fastighetsbestånd: - Från utdömd till uthyrd2023Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Corruption During Public Procurement: A Quantitative Study on Public Procurement Processes and their Effect on the Levels of Corruption in Swedish Municipalities2024Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Sweden has historically been perceived as a country free from corruption. However, Swedish municipalities break this perception and appear to be more susceptible to corruption than our nordic neighbors’. Public procurement processes are one factor that has gained traction in the wider research domain as an area of potential risk. Public procurement processes are prone to corrupt behavior, since they not only entail large financial stakes, but also foster interactions between public and private actors. Therefore, this study intends to investigate the relationship between public procurement and corruption in the context of Swedish municipalities. This is the focal point of this study, but it also addresses other potential factors that previous literature assumes either increase or decrease corruption, such as population size, female representation, media coverage, operational size, and educational level. This study also aims to analyze complementary methods for measuring corruption. The effect that public procurements have on corruption is estimated by analyzing previously scientific literature, collecting procurement data, and utilizing a municipal corruption index, created with the help of a dataset from Statskontoret, which has not yet been released publicly. The additional variables are analyzed in a similar manner, to deduce their respective effects. The study presents results based on bivariate and multiple regression analyses that indicate a positive correlation between public procurement and corruption.

Framing the New Cold War?: Media Analysis of Western Newspapers Covering the Ukraine Crisis2022Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 12 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the framing of the situation in Ukraine in influential daily newspapers from the US, Great Britain and Germany looking at the coverage from march 2014 and february 2022. In doing so it aims to clarify how the influential daily newspapers of Germany, Great Britain and the United States respectively covered the tensions between Russia and Ukraine? For this purpose a qualitative media analysis is conducted using elements of Entman's framing theory and Lichtenstein's additions to it to guide the research. The analysis of 50 articles found up to eight frames on international tensions, three on economics and three on the situation inside Ukraine within the newspaper coverage of each respective state. The comparison found surprisingly little differences in the frames and their elements ( problem definition, situational causes, personal cause/blame, treatment recommendation).

Securitization of Migration and Border Control from EU to the national level at the time of refugee crisis: The case of Sweden2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Securitization of migration is a phenomenon that has been present for a long time. Widening of security scope resulted in emergence of untraditional security issues. By critically analysing European Union’s policy Global Approach to Migration and Mobility (GAMM) and Swedish Government Bills from 2015 introducing ID controls and confining the possibility of asylum seekers to acquire residence permit in order to relief the heavily burdened societal functions caused by the large influx of asylum seekers, the study investigates the way actors involved in the creation of policies transform political issues into the matter of security. The theoretical framework of securitization theory utilized in the study indicates that the extraordinary actions, that go beyond normal political procedures, are taken on both levels, and they are justified by portraying migration as a threat to inner security and functioning of different societal functions that have legitimate right to survival. Furthermore, irregular migration is posed as an external threat to EU, connected to the cross-border criminal activity and a potential threat to EU Member states. Asylum seekers in Sweden are presented as a threat to public order and inner security of the state. The threat of migration motivates governments on both levels to take institutional measures such as increased border controls and other measures to reduce and control the immigration.

The window of Opportunity for the Paradox of Disputes Despite Interdependence by the Relational Theory of World Politics: A Predicate Analysis of the Relationship Between Japan and South Korea2022Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 14 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the relationship between Japan and South Korea and the paradox of its disputes despite the economic interdependence with the relational theory of world politics by Qin (2018b). World Trade Organization (WTO) Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) complaints between the countries between the years 2016 and 2020 have been analyzed to study this. The method utilized is that of a predicate discourse analysis. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches are employed within the analysis as it includes the extraction of the predicates from qualitative complaint documents but additionally, a quantitative table of the predicates is generated to provide information on the frequencies and case locations of the findings. Neither the theory nor the unit of relation has been widely examined by Western international relations (IR) scholars, which allows this study to lead way for future research on the further expansion of knowledge and utilization of the relational theory. Furthermore, it provides insight into the relational object space of disputes in the relationship between the economically interdependent Japan and South Korea. The theoretical concepts of relational identity, actors as relators, hierarchy, and cultural communities in the analysis explain the existence of the paradox of disputes despite interdependence.

European Union’s Extraterritorialisation of Migration Management: The Expanding and Diminishing Agency of States, Migrants and Refugees: How can we understand the European Union’s use of extraterritorial management of migration?2021Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In the face of the ‘refugee crisis’ and increased irregular migration flows, EU member states have taken up extraterritorial actions to address their migration problems. This thesis introduces three critical notions; the modern state, the agency of the third states and the agency of the migrant, to create an inclusive framework prior to analysing EU’s extraterritorial management of migration. It then explores the EU’s extraterritorial management of migration by investigating the EU’s relations with four different non-EU states, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Libya, Morocco and Turkey. Throughout the analysis power imbalances between the EU and third states and issues of state sovereignty are brought up. It is argued that the third states see their agency diminished as a result of the EU’s border reaffirmation attempts. Border reaffirmation is done through offshoring responsibility and accountability by providing financial aid and other forms of support to third states. As a result of this form of offshoring, agency of migrants and refugees are also diminished as they have limited agency over their destination and see their rights being abused in the processes of extraterritorialisation of migration management. This thesis underlines the mismatches between the EU’s commitments to human and refugee rights and their actions of extraterritorialisation.

"Anyone Can Mistake Their Experience for Transgenderism" - The Anti-Gender Movement in Finland: A Discourse Analysis of Parliamentary Speeches2024Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 14 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Since mid-1990s a transnational, global anti-gender movement has sought to undermine women’s and LGBT-people’s rights around the world, and at present, trans people are regarded as the movement’s prime targets. Taking a constructivist approach, this bachelor thesis examines through discourse analysis the opposition to a law on trans rights in the Finnish Parliament, voted on at the beginning of the year 2023. In doing this, the bachelor thesis adds to the literature on norm contestation in International Relations, especially when it comes to LGBT-rights, while contributing to the still limited research on the anti-gender movement in the Northern European countries. Recognizing norm spoiling attempts in the opposition to trans rights, the thesis argues this opposition in Finland can be understood as part of the global anti-gender movement.

Violence on the Move: Experiences of Afghan Refugees2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (konstnärlig kandidatexamen), 12 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The war in Afghanistan has been a core component of the so called ‘War on Terror’ for over twenty years. These decades of hostilities have caused many people to flee and seek refuge in other countries. This study aims to explore and thereby gain a better understanding of the various forms of violence experienced by Afghan refugees living in Germany. The overarching research question to achieve that aim, was: ‘What role did, and do, different forms of violence play in the experiences of the participants?’The study used the framework introduced by Johan Galtung of direct, structural and cultural violence to analyze the data of qualitative in-depth interviews that were conducted. The interviews showed that participants to varying degrees were subjected to a complex combination of all three types of violence in Afghanistan, on their journey to Europe and in Germany. Most direct violence occurred in Afghanistan, on the hands of the Taliban as well as on the journey. Structural violence was omnipresent, and varied from context to context. Whilst in Afghanistan, it was mainly in the realms of poverty, education and water and electricity infrastructure, in Germany it shifted to adequate housing, language courses, prolonged bureaucratic procedures and access to health care. The study found clear signs of cultural violence which normalized other forms of violence. This study indicated that whilst the types of violence are complex and transform continuously; direct, structural and cultural violence are always to a certain degree present in the lives of the Afghan refugees.

    Abstract [en]

Fallacies and wishful thinking: on Russia studies, Putin, and the lead-up to the warWhen President Putin over the years repeatedly raged and ranted about how Russia had been deceived by the West over NATO’s eastward expansion, how Ukraine’s rightful president allegedly had been illegally overthrown in a coup instigated by the West, and how these actions had the hidden purpose of bringing destruction and devastation to Russia, few were inclined to believe that he was not just repeat-ing a mantra, but actually believed in what he said and prescribed a program of action. This essay provides a background to the steady growth of the authoritar-ian essence of the Putin regime and its growing ambitions beyond Russia’s borders and discusses what academic area studies specialists in the West and other Russia pundits generally should have been able to foresee about Russia’s aggressiveness and its upcoming assault on Ukraine. Perhaps the current situation could have been avoided, had there been a greater inclination to bring together the clues that were there and take preventive action to meet the danger

Squaring the circle: Legitimizing the Putin regime after February 24, 20222023Ingår i: Exploring Russia’s Exceptionalism in International Politics / [ed] Taras, Raymond, London: Routledge, 2023, 1, s. 53-65Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Vladimir Putin’s power position has long been sustained by the successful communication of major political myths and his acclaimed role in them. This chapter discusses such myths to assess whether they are still useful for the regime as tools of legitimation after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched on February 24, 2022, and Russia’s lack of success on the battlefield thereafter. I introduce the distinction between overarching master myths and more supplementary myths, arguing that the master myths about Russia’s pre-determined great power status, Russia as a phoenix rising from the rubbles of another Time of Troubles, and Russia as a bulwark against the evil West retain their relevance and are ruthlessly exploited by the regime. Several supplementary myths have most likely had their credibility reduced. However, unless the master myths are affected, the regime is not likely to face a major loss of legitimacy among the population at large.

Mistakes and Demise: Mikhail Gorbachev and the Dissolution of the Soviet Union2020Ingår i: Mistakes, Errors and Failures Across Cultures: Navigating Potentials / [ed] Elisabeth Vanderheiden and Claude-Hélène Mayer, Switzerland: Springer Nature, 2020, s. 183-198Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter focuses on the final stage of the history of the Soviet Union, from 1985 to 1991, when the last Communist Party and Soviet state leader Mikhail Gorbachev tried to reform his country by making economic life more effective, widen the scope of political participation, open up history and culture for debate, and introduce a new, peaceful thinking in international affairs. Gorbachev wanted to save the Soviet system but ended up destroying it. His initially successful strategy of taking a middle-of-the road position to gain support worked well during the first years of reform, but the mid-position became successively narrower until it finally dissolved. Gorbachev’s increasingly desperate attempts to negotiate a new and revised union treaty led in 1991 to the failed August coup which, in turn, dealt the final death blow to the Soviet Union. By way of conclusion, political mistakes are often difficult to distinguish from failures caused by structural problems. As is illustrated by the case of Gorbachev and the Soviet Union, this is particularly salient in societies in which statist power and cultural patterns have traditionally played decisive roles in historical developments.

Ireland’s Apple addiction: Why is Ireland enabling Apple’s corporate tax avoidance strategies despite the European Union’s growing intent to tackle tax avoidance committed by multinational corporations?2024Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 14 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In 2016, the European Commission accused Ireland of giving preferential tax treatment to one of the largest tech companies in the world, Apple. The aim of this paper is to discover the reasons why Ireland is enabling Apple to avoid paying corporate income tax despite the European Union’s intention of curbing tax avoidance committed by multinational corporations within the Union. Understanding why Ireland opposes further collaboration on tax matters within the EU is also central to answering why the country allows Apple’s tax planning strategies, as its line of argumentation shows its national interests. In order to see its interests better, I will also look at the economic state of the country. Furthermore, how the wider international community tries to solve corporate tax avoidance is important to understand too, as rules and norms at the international level influence how countries view cooperation on tax matters. By paying attention to the issue’s different layers, I plan to provide a holistic analysis of why Ireland chooses collaboration with Apple and opposes the EU’s interference into its tax matters.

The art of rejection - why is the nuclear ban treaty dismissed by the nuclear states?2022Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 14 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Disarmament remains a contested topic within the nuclear weapons debate and it is included as one of the mutually reinforcing pillars of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). However, when the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) was mandated by UNGA in 2016 and later entered into force in 2021, it was immediately rejected by all nuclear-weapons states – China, France, Russia, the UK and the US – and their allies. The paradox of such a negative response to the new treaty despite their alleged loyalty to the disarmament pillar of the NPT was the starting point of the thesis and was examined through the theoretical lenses of constructivism, neo-liberal institutionalism and structural realism to pinpoint which offered the most tangible answer to the question at hand. The research was conducted by utilizing the method of qualitative content analysis on statements and working papers by the five nuclear-weapons states, and it concluded that – while all theories brought up interesting points – structural realism provided the most useful perspective on the matter through its take on states’ insecurity towards each other

Power Relations at the Intersection of Gender, Race and Class Perpetuated in Sex Tourism2023Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 14 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Sex tourism is a process whereby most commonly men from the Global North travel to the Global South to gain access to the bodies of women. This process perpetuates inequalities at the intersection of gender, race and class. This research seeks to uncover contemporary power relations in the relationship between male sex tourists from the Global North and female sex workers from the Global South. This research attempts to understand how sex tourism motivates problematic international gendered assumptions about Global South women by Global North men, whether and how the customers from the Global North are the dominant participants in the tourism-related sexual entertainment industry, and to what extent sex tourism is indeed exploitative. The research puzzle was addressed through data triangulation of a content analysis of men’s accounts as sex tourists and an expert interview. It was found that colonial patriarchal constructions of Global South women as available and passive and as commoditised objects of male lust are perpetuated in contemporary sex tourism in Thailand. Moreover, I argue that because the men that enlist the women’s sexual services are aware of the women’s deficient economic situation, these men are consciously exploiting these women to gain access to their bodies.

    Abstract [sv]

    Beyond Culture and Identity: Places, Practices, Experiences2008Ingår i: Ethnologia Europaea, ISSN 0425-4597, E-ISSN 1604-3030, Vol. 38, nr 1, s. 13-22Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents state of the art ethnology and anthropology of Europe as indicated in the programmes of two international conferences to be held in 2008. The author discusses the parameters of pertinent research topics and suggests three themes that are especially relevant for present-day Europe as a field of ethnographic research. They concern migration, citizenship and Europe beyond the EU. Conceptual lenses other than those of culture and identity are proposed, referring to places, practices and experiences.
