Background: Pressure ulcers are a complication of an underlying disease and cause major suffering to the patient. The consequence of pressure ulcers articulates as a burden on healthcare and causes suffering for the patient, which results in major costs to society. Despite the fact that the nurse is aware of the risk of pressure ulcers and that it requires preventive measures, previous studies show that just over one in five patients cared for in hospital has pressure ulcers.
Aim: To shed light on the nurse's experience of pressure ulcer prevention.
Method: A literature study with qualitative design that was analyzed according to Integrated compilation of qualitative research inspired by metasynthesis.
Result: Three main categories emerged; The nurse in the organization, Nursing and Education. Understaffing was a recurring theme and the nurse felt it was hard to keep up with tasks due to understaffing and lack of time.
Conclusion: A good collaboration between the nurse and the assistant nurse is important, as a lot of nursing work around the pressure ulcers is delegated. Through regular training in the workplace regarding terminology for the pressure ulcers, mistakes and misinterpretations in the documentation can be avoided.
