Social Integration of Syrian Refugees in the Swedish Society, a Plausible Reality or a Far-fetched Dream?2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This research was conducted to study the social integration of Syrian refugees in Sweden and their feeling of inclusion in the Swedish society, or exclusion from it. The research also targeted illuminating and analyzing potential reasons for the social exclusion of some Syrian refugees according to first-hand experiences, perspectives, and opinions collected by semi-structured interviews with 10 informants who left Syria due to civil war and sought asylum in Sweden. This paper serves as a platform on which voices and views of Syrian refugees were echoed, and conclusions on their settlement and inclusion in their new country were based on their own feelings, struggles, and matters of their social lives. To achieve that, social, cultural, and human aspects were prioritized over mainstream economic and legal aspects as all informants were documented and integrated into the Swedish labor market or education system.

Nonetheless, the study results have shown a worrying lack of social inclusion that Syrian refugees have experienced so far in their new country, reducing them into underprivileged, ethnic social circles where they had limited access to social networks from different backgrounds, resources, and opportunity. The nature of the Swedish society, as well as the negative image of Syrian refugees, Ethnic-segregated residencies, cultural incompatibility, and racism, were found to be the main reasons behind this phenomenon

Afghan Women in Sweden: A Qualitative Study of Their Socio-Cultural Integration and Sense of Belonging2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate on the social and cultural integration experiences of Afghan women in Sweden, in terms of their social networks and their socio-cultural practices. In addition, this paper questions where the Afghan women feel belonging to and what factors shape this sense of belonging. For this reason, a qualitative methodology is applied and the data is compiled through semi-structured interviews with ten Afghan women residing in Malmö, Sweden, with using both focus group interviews and individual interviews as the data collecting procedures. The concepts of socio-cultural integration, sense of belonging and social network have been utilized as the theoretical and conceptual frameworks of the study. With regards to social networks, this research intends to investigate on the social interactions of the participants with people of their own ethnic group and also with Swedes. Regarding the socio-cultural practices, the eating habits and the holiday celebration and participation of Afghan women participating in the research are examined as indicators of their cultural integration. The findings of the study reveal that language proficiency is considered as the key factor for socio-cultural integration among the participants. In general, the participants experience different levels of social interactions both with other Afghans and with Swedes. The study also shows that while the participants are committed to the Afghan cultural practices such as eating Afghan foods and celebrating their holidays, they also welcome some of the Swedish cultural practices. In addition, mutual respect has a fundamental place in Afghan women‟s interactions with the host culture and values. Moreover, the participants of this study experience different notions of belonging, and factors such as their family ties, safety, and discrimination vs. acceptance shape their feeling of belonging to both Sweden and Afghanistan. In general, the findings of this study confirm Beg‟s statement (2005) that Afghan women are not a homogenous group, and experience different varieties of socio-cultural integration and different notions of belonging.

The Impact of Social Network on the Labor Market Outcomes The Case of Iranian Immigrant Women in Malmö2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

AbstractThis paper investigates the impact of social network on the labor market outcomes. This is a case study of highly-educated Iranian immigrant women who have been living in Malmö for more than five years. It is assumed that the high level of education, language skill and work experience are the major characteristics of human capital that affect their social integration. The role of social network in social and economic life of Iranian immigrant women is discussed. The data is comprised of six semi-structured interviews with highly educated Iranian immigrant women in Malmö. The results of the study indicate that Iranian immigrant women are highly motivated to participate in the social and economic sectors of Sweden. Regarding the social network, having weak ties is associated with better labor market achievement for Iranian immigrant women and the power of social network is immense in the process of social integration. The level of education has both positive and negative effects on the degree of social integration. The results of the study demonstrate that re-education is a strategy and investment for a better employment opportunity in future.

    Abstract [en]

The theme of the work is very central and is often addressed during debates, in the media and in general in society. Second-generation immigrants may find it difficult to understand the conflicts that exist around fitting into a society and shaping themselves according to social reality.

Therefore, the aim of this study is to highlight, on the basis of second-generation immigrants with roots in the Balkans, the concept of identity that is formed at the intersection of the values of the majority society and the cultural background of immigrant parents.

This study consists of primary data through qualitative, semi-structured interviews. Interview technology is based on predetermined questions based on my chosen themes. The chosen theoretical perspectives include: Symbolic Interactionism and the impact of ethnicity in social interaction.

The conclusions of this study are that second-generation immigrants are being squeezed with their cultural affiliation because they cannot be fully accepted, either in Sweden or in their parents home country. Furthermore, second-generation immigrants are formed on the basis of both their parents cultural background and the majority society.

United Nations Security Council Sanctions and Implications for Women: A Case Study of Iraq2023Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The UN Economic Sanctions on Iraq represent a distinct case in terms of their differential and gender-specific implications. The study's objectives have been to investigate the impacts of these sanctions on the lives of ordinary Iraqi women and how these sanctions changed their lives. Through an exhaustive content analysis of data from Iraqi women's interviews, archives, and governmental and non-governmental sources, the study concludes that the impacts of these economic sanctions have been twofold: the physical and the psychological impacts. As a result, the suffering the Iraqi women endured along with the rest of the Iraqi society has underscored the importance of renewed thinking on the mechanism of these coercive sanctions in light of the challenges they pose to the basic human rights of the target communities.

Economic integration of Iraqi immigrants with higher education into the Swedish labour market2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The issue of unemployment and labour integration of immigrants into the labour market in host countries has always been a source of debate among the public and policymakers in the host countries. This study focuses on the economic integration of highly educated Iraqi immigrants into the Swedish labour market. Based on semi-structured interviews with eight Iraqi immigrants living in Malmö, who have higher education from Iraq, this study aims to illuminate the obstacles and opportunities for Iraqi immigrants to integrate into Swedish labour market, and to find out if their position in the Swedish labour market corresponds to their academic qualifications obtained from Iraq. The theoretical framework of this study explores the concepts of integration, human capital, social capital, and discrimination. Findings of the study revealed that, lack of fluency in Swedish language, family responsibilities, and devaluation of human capital function as main obstacles for highly-educated Iraqi immigrants’ integration into Swedish labour market. The social networks of Iraqi immigrants can be considered as a tool to avoid unemployment in Sweden, but at the same time, it provides access only to a certain categories of jobs that are not in par with higher education of these immigrants. Furthermore, the finding of this study also reveals that the positions of the highly educated Iraqi immigrants have acquired in the Swedish labour market are not commensurate with the educational qualifications they have from Iraq.

Recycling Identity and Culture - Identity (Re)construction and Belonging in the Iraqi Community in the South of Sweden2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract The concept of identity has become a vital part of the lives of immigrants. The aim of this thesis is to gain in-depth knowledge of how individuals of the Iraqi community construct their identity and sense of belonging in Sweden and how they relate to their ‘culture’ of origin. Twelve people with Iraqi background were interviewed; six first-generation and six of people who were born in Sweden, but whose parents were born in Iraq living in the south of Sweden. The concepts of identity; cultural and ethnic identity, integration and sense of belonging, alongside the theory of identity strategies, have been interwoven into the results of this thesis. The findings show that the first-generation of Iraqis have a solid sense of belonging to Iraq. Descendants, in turn, tended to identify themselves as both Iraqi and Swedish with a shared sense of belonging to both countries. Moreover, family, language, religion, social relationships, stage of childhood, and interactions with society are important factors in influencing identity reconstruction and one's sense of belonging.

Socialsekreterarens integrationsarbete av ensamkommande barn iden svenska samhället2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Decision-Making and Destination Selection Among Syrian Refugees - A mixed-method research of asylum destination choice; The Case of Sweden2020Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This research explored why self-selected refugees made a decision to choose Sweden as a final destination after introducing the restrictive asylum laws (2016:752) by the Swedish Government in 2016. With a pragmatist approach, data were gathered through a mixed-methods research design to investigate the research questions at hand by analyzing quantitative surveys, further supported by and expanded upon by the qualitative follow-up interviews with five respondents. The findings showed that Sweden was selected as a destination of choice due to the country’s perception in terms of freedom, human rights, “welcomeness” and quality of life. The results from this research demonstrated that refugees’ social networks played a decisive factor in the asylum destination decision. Thus, it showed the importance of migrants networks in forming the image of the intended country, hence, influencing the destination choice. On the other hand, the restriction of migration laws played only a minor role in the decision-making, and economic opportunities played a marginal role in influencing the choice of destination. Accordingly, from the results of this research one can conclude that the choice of destination is primarily directed by irrational reasons.

    Abstract [en]

This paper is a qualitative study with the aim of investigating how immigrants who have an academic  education from their home country experience their situation in the Swedish labor market. The study  aims to find out immigrants' own experiences regarding the obstacles they encounter in the pursuit of a  job that matches their level of education and work experience. Six Arabic-speaking immigrants have  participated in this study through the interviews I have conducted with them, which have been the  empirical material for this study. In this study and on the basis of what my interviewees have told me,  I have been able to identify various obstacles that make it difficult for them to get a job that corresponds  with the education they have. The assessment of the foreign degree, language skills, and lack of social  networks seemed to be obstacles for immigrant academics to find the right job. Most of the interviewees  felt that it is important to work, but what is also equally important is that they put their skills and  knowledge to use. Therefore, they have expressed different wishes regarding different forms of support  that they think can enable them to have the chance to show what they can and what knowledge and  competence they have. Support that they think can benefit their situation in the labor market is a clear  guide, better language teaching and a guide to internships that are linked to their education and work  experience.

    The Roma's in a color-blind state2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore how the Roma’s fit into the colorblind ideology in Sweden. Roma’s have been stigmatized and victims of severe abuses by the state as they were classified as an inferior race. Sweden has replaced the word race with ethnicity however, these do not directly have the same meaning. The term race is classified as taboo in Sweden making it hard to address issues regarding racial discrimination. Through my analysis I have discovered that colorblindness is integrated in all aspects of society. Institutions have used colorblind arguments which have diminished the institutional discrimination of the Roma’s. The colorblind ideology has hindered Roma inclusion meaning that their progress has been slowed down. They are still exposed in several sectors including labor market, housing market and the educational system. This thesis contributes to more knowledge regarding the relationship between Roma’s and colorblindness in Sweden. The subject has not been addressed before and the thesis opens up a new area of study.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to describe and explain how five women with a non-European background find the expression of everyday racism in today’s Swedish society, how everyday racism can affect their mental health and how they experience that the Swedish majority population handle and respond to everyday racism. The study is qualitative and was made with semi-structured interviews. The theories used are the theory of everyday racism, "we" and "the Others" and Goffman’s stigma. The results indicate that everyday racism is manifested through the population's ignorance and silence, comments, prejudices and stereotypes and is mainly expressed in arenas where there are many people at the same time. According to the women, the school and the labor market are the two most common arenas for the expression of everyday racism. They witness that the Swedish majority population rarely deal with the occurrence of everyday racism. Their mental health is negatively affected by everyday racism and can lower the individual's self-esteem. The study’s three theories that include everyday racism, “we” and “the Others” and stigma can be applied to the women's stories about their experiences and feelings about everyday racism in the Swedish society.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Honor-related violence and oppression is a major problem in our society. Many individuals live in fear and don't dare to seek help from public authorities. The most targeted group of individuals are young girls and women. Most often, the perpetrators are the men in the family and relatives, but the women can also be the perpetrators. Many lives are taken because of collective norms in honor groups and many suffer in silence. The purpose of this study is to increase the knowledge about the practices of the honor culture and the consequences with a particular focus on honor-related violence and oppression within close relationships. The study contains experiences of individuals who live in collective groups with honor norms. Previous studies on honor-related violence and oppression show that it has been difficult to map how many individuals are victims of this kind of crime. The chosen theories in this study are: stigma, individualism and collectivism and gender. These will be a tool to gain a deeper understanding of different kinds of honor norms and how they affect the victims. The collected material in this study consists of semi-structured interviews which were then analyzed with the help of the chosen theories and previous research. The results and the analysis show that honor norms express themselves differently depending on the gender and what kind of society you are in. It also shows that there is a lack of competence on honor-related violence and oppression. The respondents in the interviews demonstrate that standards of honor exist and that it must be talked about more in our society.

Identity and sense of belonging among Syrian refugees in Sweden2020Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the thesis study is to illuminate the feelings of identity and belonging of the Syrian refugees in Sweden by focusing on the Scania region. This is examined by using the concepts of individual, collective, and ethnic identity, along with the concepts of stereotyping and belonging. This qualitative study is based on five personal interviews with the Syrian refugees who came to Sweden after 2011 due to the civil war in Syria. The study is divided into four different sections; self-identification, stereotypes as perceived by the interviewees, belonging, and the role of the language; also, the paper involves the arguments of the interviewees’ responses in regard to the theoretical framework of the mentioned methods. The study demonstrates that the Syrian refugees have a sense of being in-between Sweden and Syria.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor’s thesis is an effort to understand how black women in Sweden experience 'race' and racism in everyday life. The theoretical framework includes a postcolonial theory from Sara Ahmed, with the concept of 'race' as a key element. Additional to that, Judith Butler’s gender performativity theory contributes to a broader understanding of the informants’ situation. The material consisting of interviews with four young black women implies that everyday racism is present in Swedish society to that extent that 'race' is a major aspect of these women’s life. In everyday encounters with the white majority of the society, they often feel different, marginalized, objectified and exotified. Furthermore, the informants experience that their skin color and phenotypic markers are a magnet for white people’s fetish and fantasies, but also an obstacle to obtain legitimacy in interactions with them. To those reasons, the informants are considering migrating to a country where black people are forming a larger minority in society than it is the case in Sweden. That opens up the possibility to interact with more black people who have similar experiences of being exposed to everyday racism.

“Why would I not be called for an interview?” Love Migrants Economic Integration in Sweden Experiences of highly educated immigrants while searching for employment in Sweden2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis the economic integration of highly educated love migrants in Sweden is investigated, focusing on the experiences of unemployed love migrants while search of employment and examines the factors that influence their economic integration in Sweden. This study is based on human capital theory, social capital theory, discrimination theory, and economic integration theory. The thesis is based on the qualitative research design, for this research, individual interviews with five participants have been conducted and interviewees stories have been analyzed. The findings reveal that human capital acquired in the country of origin could create transferability problems in Sweden. Additionally, discrimination and prejudicial treatment from the employers disadvantage immigrants’ position in the labor market. However, the human capital gain in the form of language skills and education facilitates and enhances economic integration. The study also looks at social and human capital interdependence - human capital gain can facilitate social contacts and network creation, and a social network can accelerate human capital value and overcome the discrimination factor, thus overcoming obstacles for gaining entrance to the labour market.

Understanding the impact of nature-based integration activities on immigrants' positive place-attachment2022Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this research is to acquire an in-depth understanding of how organized nature-based integration activities can impact recently arrived immigrants’ place attachment. This qualitative study is based on participant-observation of organized nature-based integration activities in Helsinki, Finland, and semi-structured interviews with five of the participants. The research combines social integration theory used in previous studies of nature-based integration with Scannell and Gifford’s (2010) model of place-attachment. The results of the research show how nature-based integration activities had a positive impact on recently arrived immigrants’ place-attachment, as they 1.) promoted health and wellbeing, 2.) increased social interactions, 3.) transferred culture-specific knowledge and 4.) increased independence and confidence in a new environment.

Investigating Country Policy and Information Notes: The Case of UK Home Office & Eritrea2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this research has been to investigate the UK Home Office, Country Policy and Information Notes (CINP) in the asylum-seeking process, through investigating the case of Eritrean CINP documents from 2010 until 2018. This single case study aimed to confirm its theoretical background of Lukes 2005 three-dimensional view of power theory. A pattern-matching analysing technique was implemented to address the research questions with the effort of trying to find overlapping patterns between the theory and the observed patterns in the data. The result shows there are some similarities between patterns. The connection between the three dimensions of power and the three overlapping patterns are then broadly discussed.

Sense of Place among Chinese Students in Lund - A qualitative Research into the Development of Sense of Place2020Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Chinese students currently make up the largest group of international fee-paying students at Swedish Universities. However, not much is known about their experiences at Swedish Universities, especially their place-related experiences are under-researched. For this reason, the aim of this study is to explore the development of sense of place among Chinese students in Lund. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with Chinese students that were enrolled in the spring semester 2020 at Lund University. The interview transcripts were analysed using a thematic analysis approach, which revealed that a combination of tangible and intangible factors play a role in the development of sense place among Chinese students in Lund. These factors include nature, the built environment, the peacefulness and quietness and the international vibe. Moreover, several different social networks were identified that play different roles in the development of sense of place. Networks to co-nationals play a role in the initial stage of their stay, for example in introducing them to different places in Lund. Networks to multi-nationals play a role in developing a sense of belonging and community in Lund and networks to host-national are of importance in providing culturally specific knowledge.

The Violent and Dangerous Suburb: A Qualitative Study of Suburban Youth View of Exclusion, Suburbs, and Suburban Problems2023Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the perspectives of five young individuals on marginalization, suburbs, and suburban issues. All participants are male and between the ages of 16 and 20 years old, residing and growing up in the suburb of Nydala in Malmö County. The suburb is stigmatized as problematic by mainstream society, and this structure is reinforced by the participants' expressions of feeling excluded from society due to prevailing attitudes outside of their suburb. It is important to engage with these young individuals to shed light on the other side of the issue surrounding marginalization, suburbs, and suburban issues. The participants are also asked about potential solutions to contribute to the societal debate on suburban issues. Mainstream society reinforces the discourse on suburban issues by framing the suburb through a median perspective. The media distorts the image of the suburb and portrays it as a problematic "area of exclusion," according to the participants. This is done on erroneous grounds and does not consider the underlying factors that lead to the alleged problems. The subject can be analysed from different perspectives, the theoretical framework for this study is the Chicago school, terms like exklusion and deviance by Howard Becker.

"I married someone not the same as me": Narratives Of Lived Identity Experiences Of Second-Generation Mexican Americans and White Americans and The Role Of Race, Power, and Interracial Relationships2021Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Leaning on the framework of Critical Race and Whiteness Theory, this qualitative study draws on semi-structured interviews with second-generation Mexican Americans and White Americans to offer a yet untaken perspective on the fragmented nature of identity. It also sheds light on the ways racism and interracial relationships shape individuals’ notions of race and privilege. The study’s findings indicate that Mexicans perceive themselves as a distinct racial group situated in a “third space,” marked by a dialectic between externally ascribed and internally attributed racial identity categories. White individuals use color and power-evasion strategies to avoid cognizance of their own racial identities. However, their interracial relationships provide a meaningful premise altering the ways they perceive notions of race and White privilege. Shifts in White individuals’ perspectives occur in relation to heightened race consciousness, acknowledging White privilege, and racial inequality and includes behavioral changes resulting from their interactions with their significant others.

The nexus between emigration and Vocational Education and Training in Moldova2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present thesis is to explore the linkages between the phenomenon of migration, particularly emigration and the process of Vocational Education and Training (VET)/ professional education in Moldova. The adverse socio economic circumstances in the country caused mass emigration in the last two decades. With the use of eight semi-structured interviews with directors and deputy directors of VET institutions, the research focuses on the reasons for emigrating, as well as the perception of the impact of the phenomenon of emigration on the development of the VET system. The concepts of brain drain, human capital, push and pull are used as analytical instruments to investigate the research questions. The analysis is also based on the secondary sources (statistics, reports, articles and literature in the field). The research points out that several major factors, including economic reasons and political instability, represent the push elements for the development of the emigration phenomenon. The results reveal that in the last five years the VET system through the reform processes has been adapted to the socioeconomic changes. However, the development of the VET sector continues to be challenged by economic issues and emigration of skilled human resources. Keywords: emigration, Vocational Education and Training, Vocational Education and Training system, brain drain, human capital, push and pull,

Invandrares upplevelser av integration i Sverige - En kvalitativ studie om fem invandrares integrationsprocess i Sverige2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Nature and Networks: experiences of nature-based integration in Sweden2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Nature-based integration projects present nature and green spaces as an arena for interaction and integration between immigrants and native-born Swedes, and amongst immigrants of different backgrounds. To explore this, the study looks at experiences of NBI projects from the perspective of immigrants who have moved to Sweden and started the process of settling into the new society. The concepts of social networks, as well as structural, cultural, interactive and identificational integration were applied to view the interviewees experiences of nature-based integration activities in Sweden. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight immigrants', about their participation in NBI projects in Sweden, and how they describe their experiences and perceptions of nature and social interactions. The findings were that time spent in nature was experienced as beneficial for the individual by contributing to their psychological well-being and providing opportunities for socialisation,. Nature in Sweden was depicted as vast, accessible and inclusive when compared with their countries of origin. Interactions and new diversified social networks provided information exchange and novel knowledge. This was seen as one of the entry points to society, and another way in which to understand Swedish cultural traditions, as nature was generally perceived as important in Swedish society. The final results showed that participation in nature-based integration activities was able to contribute to their structural, cultural and interactive integration, but could not be linked to their identificational integration in Sweden.

Swedish Colorblindness and Post-Racism: A Study on Colorblindness and Post-Racism and its influence on Swedish law2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 180 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Although the reality of Swedish race relations is very complex, Sweden presents itself to the world as a colorblind utopia where race does not exist. Since the mid-1900s, Sweden has embraced an anti-racist rhetoric that developed into post-racism and colorblindness, where race is not seen, and racial discrimination is not acknowledged as a societal problem. This study seeks to problematize the complexities of Swedish post-racism and colorblindness. By drawing on previous research, it is clear that the Swedish hegemony has not been thoroughly deconstructed, which necessitates further studies in this area. By drawing on the WPR approach to poststructural policy analysis, this study looks at how Swedish law is influenced by the narratives of colorblindness and details the shortcomings of excluding the term ‘race’ from legislation. Furthermore, this study employs expert interviews to access the knowledge of experts on how colorblindness and post-racism came to be. It is concluded in this thesis that the post-racist and colorblind perception of Sweden influences Swedish law in negative ways and that the removal of the term race is a denial of the existence of a racial hierarchy in Sweden.

Whose Land Are We Standing On?: Negotiating Borders, Governance, Land, and Selfhood in the North American Borderlands2022Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 28 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The imposition of European borders in North America has given rise to a need to inquire into the impact of the overlay of colonial borders upon earlier ideas of geographical boundaries, and upon indigenous border nations and their connections to places and ways of being. Here, we look to delineate a tentative approach to further such inquiries into indigenous border nations who have found themselves on or near an international border by examining the relationship with ancestral lands. A thematic analysis will be conducted in the framework of a case study research design. Two cases are discussed, which suggest the relationship with ancestral lands is often discussed in transboundary terms. The discussion further illustrates cross-border mobility enacts indigenous understandings of borders, governance, land, and selfhood, and has led to negotiations over the rights which flow from these. For the future, this suggests attention to transboundary indigenous nations is necessary.

The Art of Not Belonging – A Textual Analysis of Identity Construction in Contemporary Norwegian Literature2020Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to investigate how identity construction is expressed in contemporary Norwegian literature written by the offspring of migrants, and thus contribute to the existing body of research on identity construction in academic literature. This is done by exploring which processes are important in the process of identity construction and through the application of a theoretical framework. The framework both makes use of the concepts of ‘othering’, identity, ethnicity, and ‘culture’, as well as it raises a discussion of how intersectionality theory functions as a broader analytical frame in this study. The analysis examines how identity construction is seen in two anthology books, making use of textual analysis supported by the theoretical framework. What the analysis shows is that ‘othering’, the grouping of ‘us’ and ‘them’, as well as ethnicity play a large role in how identities are constructed. The empirical material provides us with a representation of these identity constructions, and leads to a debate on whether the processes of ‘othering’ and social categorisation work in one way only, or if it is a more complex process – as well as what this ‘othering’ might lead to concerning the question of finding belonging or community in being ‘other’.

Germany's temporary ban on family reunification for beneficiaries of subsidiary protection - A comparative discourse analysis of (de)-legitimation strategies2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The German government’s decision in 2016 to reduce the number of incoming immigrants by suspending family reunification for beneficiaries of subsidiary protection for two years, sparked a controversial debate, with some critics arguing that family reunification represents a human right. Contributing to the very scarce literature about this development, the aim pursued in this thesis is to better understand the differing discourses and (de-)legitimation strategies regarding the suspension by comparatively analysing written statements handed in to German parliament by the government and civil society organisations in March of 2017. The theoretical framework underlying this thesis are the discursive understanding of human rights by Seyla Benhabib and Michel Foucault’s theorisation of power and knowledge. The methodological framework consists of a three-dimensional critical discourse analysis by Norman Fairclough complemented with an analysis of the four categories of (de-)legitimation by Theo van Leeuwen. The results of the analysis show that two types of discourse are pursued in the material: a legal, technical discourse by the government supported by (de-)legitimation strategies relying on national laws, administrative court decisions and the value of qualities like leadership and a discourse focused on the value of family life by the civil society organisations. Despite the diverse backgrounds of the civil society organisations analysed, coinciding (de-)legitimation strategies based on the importance of family life for integration and based on the case law of federal and European courts were identified.

Vulnerable and Marginalized Women and Young Girls: The development of Human Trafficking in Sweden2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis, the author explores the main factors that may have contributed to the development of human trafficking in terms of sexual exploitation in Sweden. The aim is to identify the background of the main women and young girls exposed to human trafficking and to identify the factors that could potentially decrease the development of human trafficking. The theoretical underpinnings, which incorporated the push and pull model, the postcolonial feminist theory and the routine activity theory, as well as the information provided by the seven semi-structured interviews, provided a necessary framework to analyze and discuss the findings. The knowledgeable and experienced informants of this qualitative thesis consist of relevant authorities and organizations in the field of human trafficking. The findings of this thesis suggested that human trafficking in women and your girls for sexual exploitation is driven by poverty, the experience of war, lack of opportunities, the trafficker’s greed for profit and the demand for prostitution from countries such as Sweden. The findings moreover presented that the women and young girls that generally are exposed to human trafficking in terms of sexual exploitation, usually originate from third world countries and through circular migration within Europe. The results of this thesis furthermore presented various aspects and areas of improvement that are needed for relevant actors, in order for them to jointly work towards their common goal; to combat human trafficking cases in Sweden.

Friend or Foe? A Critical Discourse Analysis on the Portrayal of Immigrants in the US2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis the author explores the portrayal of immigrants in the USA, more specifically how immigrants were portrayed by the last three presidents; Donald J. Trump, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush. While the majority of the US society sees immigration as a strength, the attitudes towards immigration remain divided within the political blocks. By the means of a critical discourse analysis I explore in which way presidential rhetoric has portrayed immigrants, and what are the differences in how the selected presidents have led the debate on immigration. Through the concepts of the ‘Other’ and ‘enemy images, and with an application of social identity theory, the author of this thesis further discusses the processes of intergroup comparison and its effects on the relationship between immigrants and natives.

Exploring Working Holiday Makers’ Motivations in Australia. An investigation on the factors influencing Working Holiday Makers’ decision to engage with the 88 days of specified regional work criteria2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the reasons why Working Holiday Makers (WHMs) in Australia decide to complete the 88 days of specified regional work to obtain a Second Working Holiday (WH) visa. The research follows a qualitative approach via the use of semi-structed interviews on a sample of fifteen current or former WHMs. The resulting data are analysed in connection to the theoretical framework of migrants’ role in bifurcated labour markets, with a further focus on the micro-level neoclassical economics principles and the concept of self-improvement through hardship. It is argued that the 88-day scheme represented for all the interviewees a form of investment to achieve a greater goal. The findings revealed that, while only a few completed the 88 days driven by the desire to achieve self-actualisation, most of the informants were driven by an economic rationale: some focused on the short-term financial benefits of a further year of work in the country, while others planned to use their Second WH as a pathway towards permanent residency.

    Abstract [sv]

A Comparative Analysis of Children's Rights in the Juvenile Justice System in Saudi Arabia and the USA2023Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 12 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to explore and compare children's rights in the juvenile justice systems of theKingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the United States of America (USA). The study delves intothe legal frameworks, practices, challenges, and cultural influences that impact children's rightsin both countries' juvenile justice systems. By analyzing the historical, cultural, social, andpolitical contexts shaping the evolution of these systems, the research examines the alignment ofpolicies with international human rights standards, with a primary focus on the United NationsConvention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The study employs the Comparative LegalResearch Method and the Most Different Systems Design (MDSD) to facilitate a comprehensivecomparison. This comparative analysis employs the UNCRC as a normative framework tocontribute to the ongoing discourse on juvenile justice reform and encourages a deeperunderstanding of the intricate interplay between legal structures, cultural dynamics, and humanrights considerations in the treatment of young offenders. The results of this in-depthexamination provide insights into the complexities of juvenile justice in both countries.

Lesvos Island: A Critical Discourse Analysis on the Local Daily Press2022Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Since 2015, Greece has been in an unprecedented position. The Syrian civil war triggered the movement of more than 850,000 arrivals into Greece during 2015 (UNHCR, 2015). Being geographically situated as the closest European country to the east of Syria, Greece had to deal with a large increase in the number of migrating peoples to the country and by proxy, the European Union. This research seeks to understand how power relations between the island’s local population and its asylum seeker population are represented through an analysis of the discourse produced by the local daily press. In particular, the research reviews the discourse surrounding the island’s main square occupation by asylum seekers in April 2018. The theory of the established and outsiders is the framework used for the analysis, while Critical Discourse Analysis and General Inductive Approach constitutes the methodological ground of the thesis. The analysis showcases that Lesvos’ local daily press reproduces a discourse in line with the established and outsiders theory, attributing the local population as being established and the asylum seekers as being outsiders.

Affective Waiting: Experiences of Family Reunification in Sweden2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Family reunification is a unique research field currently impacted by shifting policies and attitudes on integration. In Sweden, family connections constitute the largest immigration category, yet the wait for family reunification has not yet been examined within academia. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to explore former asylum seekers’ experiences of waiting for family reunification in Sweden. Taking place at all stages of the migratory process, elements within waiting include time perception, power relations, expectations, future, hope, uncertainty and activity. Forming the theoretical framework of this thesis, six semi-structured interviews with former asylum seekers from Syria are analyzed in relation to waiting and migration. The findings suggest that waiting stretches across legal statuses and entails different perceptions of time, differing from the linear bureaucratic model provided by the Swedish Migration Agency. Family reunification is the future goal of the informants’ wait, asylum being a temporal marker on the way there. The wait encompasses a power relation in which several actors in Sweden and abroad affect expectations, outcome and duration of the wait. Uncertainty in terms of duration and outcome affect informants’ well-being negatively. With distrust in the procedures of the Swedish Migration Agency, the process is experienced as unjust, especially when others receive decisions ahead of time. While passivity constitutes parts of the wait, activity in terms of physical action such as going to work and mental monitoring of one’s case are present. Finally, waiting for family reunification is a highly affective form of waiting entailing emotions and care, influencing the relation to the family in waiting abroad.

Problematising policy: Analysis of change and continuity in Danish integration policies from 1999, 2005, and 20152020Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This paper studies selected Danish integration policies from 1999, 2005, and 2015, and analyses change and continuity in the problem representations, and their underlying assumptions of integration, citizenship, and nation. Through the methods of WPR and CDA, the findings show how migrants’ contribution and participation to the Danish society through employment, language, and culture courses is the most essential part of the Danish integration philosophy. A change in assumptions and language use regarding integration and contribution to the nation was observed from 1999 to 2015. However, arguments of how migrants should show active citizenship are consistent in 2005 and 2015. The Danish integration philosophy is discussed, by showing how the field very much relies on constantly “fixing” perceived problems, which has resulted in more than 20 amendments in integration policies. By studying problematisations in policy, this study contributes with detailed evaluation of the Danish integration philosophy in the last decade.

    Abstract [sv]

The burka ban - liberation or oppression? A discourse analysis of the Danish ‘burka ban’ from a gender equality perspective2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis concerns the recent debate about the so-called cover ban in Denmark, which has been known in media as the ‘burka ban’. The ban involves an illegalization of covering of the face that does not have a justifiable cause like weather conditions. Through a discourse analysis of media articles the aim of this thesis is to identify which arguments are represented in this debate. The material for the analysis is found in the two major Danish newspapers; Politiken and Berlingske. The analysis is inspired by the theories of Norman Fairclough. The theoretical framework of the thesis is centered on theories regarding gender equality and feminism, and the analysis focuses on the discourses of these topics that are reproduced in the debate. The results show how the discourse of gender equality is the most prominent in the debate, and it shows how this discourse is naturalized. Within this discourse, there is an element of liberation of women, and this liberation is presented as the goal for all women. Furthermore, only the majority has access to this discourse, and it is not possible for the minority to negotiate it in any way. I discuss how the debate can be seen as an expression of the discourse about Islam in Denmark in general, as well as how the ban can be seen in a context of objectification of the female body.

The readmission agreement between Sweden and Afghanistan: A tortuous strategy of creating a deportation corridor to a war-torn country?2021Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Focusing on the readmission agreement between Sweden and Afghanistan, this study aims to enhance our understanding of why and how states use readmission agreements and the discourse underpinning these practices. Based on interviews with key officials working in the Swedish deportation infrastructure, the findings show that the agreement is presented as a successful measure resulting in a more predictable process and increased forced returns. The agreement is a critical technique for minimizing disruptions in the deportation corridor to Afghanistan, however, not without interruptions due to the infrastructure’s reliance on many elements and the complexity of bilateral cooperation. The discursive practices, including “problem” representations and assumptions justifying the agreement, can be questioned considering that most Afghans abscond or travel to another Schengen country instead of returning. The absence of an agreement evaluation further necessitates calling the increased governmental focus on readmission agreements into question. The study contributes to deconstructing governmental rationalities through a novel methodology of studying deportation and readmission.

Being an Asylum Seeker in Bosnia and Herzegovina; Migration Experiences and Reasons for Seeking Asylum in a non-EU Country2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The overall purpose of this thesis is to draw attention to the growing number of asylum seekers who chose to come to Bosnia and Herzegovina as a non-EU country, and increase the knowledge and understanding of the numerous political and social factors that influenced that decision. In order to achieve the purpose of this narrative research, a qualitative method was used, based on semi-structured interviews with six asylum seekers. The reasons for leaving the country of origin, the problems they encountered during the journey, and the reasons and motivation for seeking asylum in Bosnia and Herzegovina were explored. The data analysis relied on the Push and Pull theory, as well as on the Social Network and Social Capital theory, for help in better understanding the asylum seekers trajectory. Data obtained through interviews reflected a number of factors affecting the migration of asylum seekers: lack of security, violence, threats, political reasons, external or internal wars, lack of jobs and economic insecurity. An important role in the decision process of asylum seekers was played by the Social Network and Social Capital, including inevitable smugglers as facilitators and sources of information on potential destination countries. The asylum seekers’ journey was not straightforward; instead it was actually a multi-step process. On their way to BiH, they stopped in the countries they transited and spent a considerable period of time there. The growing importance of transit countries is reflected in the fact that they have become nodes where asylum seekers can receive and evaluate new information, reconsider their decisions, or make new ones.

Resistance under repression. The political mobilisation of female migrant domestic workers in Lebanon2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to understand how the political mobilisation of migrant domestic workers (MDWs) employed in Lebanon started and continued. It also tries to comprehend how some of them could found a politically active collective of MDWs, the Alliance of Domestic Workers in Lebanon (Alliance), by analysing what factors enabled and restrained the open political activism of MDWs from their first steps as activists until now. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with two founding members and seven international and Lebanese organisations, the MDWs´ political mobilisation is chronologically recaptured. Extending Lahusen´s definition of political mobilisation, the thesis critically reflects on Johnston´s concept for protest to evolve in repressive states. The analysis shows that the women activists are left in a lawless position and refer to the free spaces of Lebanese and international non-profit organisations, where their activism begins. These organisations help the women to build up their protest capital, enabling them to start their own group, the Alliance. Within their own group they organise themselves not only against the injustice they experience as MDWs but also emancipate themselves from their dependency on the NGOs. The findings approve that though international and Lebanese organisations have played a crucial part in successfully mobilising the women, the MDWs´ experience of lack of influence inside these free spaces, shapes the group´s actions, collective identity and course. Their political mobilisation can be seen as a long-term, organic process, in which knowledge, collective identity, collective action and experience are tightly interwoven and are the motor behind the members´ activism.

A Phenomenological Study on the pre-migration traumatic experiences of international students in their home countries, their decision to study abroad and their coping mechanisms post-migration2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to illuminate how some residents in Rosengård experience their residental area and what they think about the medias negative portrayal on the district. In total eleven people took part in this study.

What do the participants in the study think and feel about their neighbourhood? And how do the participants from Rosengård experience the presentation in the media of their residential area? For the questions to be answerd I made a qualitative study that consisted of interviewing some people from Rosengård. The people that I interviewed lives in Rosengård and have lived there in more than three years. The age group that I choosed is people from 18 and above. To analyze my empirical material I used three theories: Loïc J.D Waquants territorial stigmatization, Erving Goffmans stigma and agenda-setting theory.

The result of the interviews is that the participants from Rosengård feels a great sense of security, fellowship and belonging in their residental area. The inhabitants that took part in the interviews thrive very well in Rosengård. The participants had divided perceptions of the media's negative portrayal, however, the majority of the interviewees did not like the media's portrayal of the area. They believe that the media exaggerates in reporting the things that happen in Rosengård especially the crimes that happens there. Finally, I came to the conclusion that the interviewed persons from Rosengård experienced negative reactions when they mention their residential address.
