This special issue has grown out of an ongoing Nordic collaborative research project (Nordcorp) using Scandinavian women’s football as a strategically selected extreme case (of organizational development) to study a Nordic sport model in transition. The common point of interest for the project group, which overlaps with the editors and authors in this issue of Soccer and Society, is a fascination with the current development of Scandinavian women’s football that stands out as an intriguing subject for bothsports research and the social sciences.

This article presents a critical diagnosis of Swedish club football, in light of its current shortcomings on the European football market, and in comparison with the other Scandinavian leagues. The article highlights the commercial immaturity of the Swedish clubs, in addition to the context of historical and cultural values, restricted association forms, the emphasis on internationalism, the fixed tax system, the standards of the arenas, the lack of patronage and the migration of talents. The analysis closes with a depressed depiction of Swedish club football, in relation to development in Europe, as well as in Scandinavia. Still, in a dialectical reasoning this situation is, finally, evaluated as a valuable development in relation to fairness, internal sports logics as well as ecological values.

Idrottsjuridik, vad är det? Idrotten och dess reglering är till stora delar självreglerande men där lagstiftning många gånger reglerar mycket av idrotten och dess förutsättningar. Det kan handla allt ifrån EG-domstolen och dess avgöranden till skatterättsliga frågor. Tankarna med detta hjälpmedel började växa fram när jag började arbeta med idrottsjuridiska frågor vid Malmö högskola och insåg behovet av ett hjälpmedel för alla som studerar eller arbetar med idrottsjuridik. Idrottsjuridiken är ett mycket omfattande område som berör många olika rättsområden vilket också är dess tjusning. Idrottsjuridiken är ett område där känslan och förståelsen för idrotten, med självreglering samt dess ideella och kommersiella inslag, går hand i hand med juridiken. Syftet med denna första upplaga är att sammanställa och åskådliggöra idrottsjuridiska rättsfall där praxis skall vara lite mer och hanterbar samt en lagtextsamling med den mest relevanta lagstiftning som berör idrotten. Sammanställningen är tänkt att fungera som ett undervisningsunderlag för föreningsaktiva, studenter och alla andra intresserade, samt en vägledning för de som arbetar mera praktiskt med idrottsjuridiska frågor. Några av rättsfallen är inte direkt kopplade till idrottsliga frågor men där viktiga likheter och olikheter till idrotten kan aktualiseras. Sammanställningen är inte heltäckande juridiskt men undertecknad har avvägt hur många och vilka rättsfall som skall ingå i denna upplaga för att fungera som pedagogiskt hjälpmedel, bl.a. inom Idrottens utbildningar eller andra typer av utbildningar som hanterar idrottens organisering och reglering. Rättsfall inom idrotten finns också i Krister Malmstens; Idrottsvåld och Idrottstvister – 138 rättsfall. Denna upplaga tar upp idrottsrelaterat våld (Brottsbalken). För Er som önskar rättsfall kring den problematiken hänvisas till Malmstens genomgång som sträcker sig fram till 1994, eftersom föreliggande sammanställning inte behandlar idrottsvåld. Sammanställningen är uppbyggd av två huvudavdelningar där första avdelningen sammanställer idrottsjuridiska rättsfall och andra avdelningen som sammanställer utdrag av lagstiftning som är aktuell för idrotten, detta för att läsaren skall kunna få en överblick av aktuell lagstiftning samtidigt som rättsfallen läses. Författaren reserverar sig mot eventuella felaktigheter och påminner att juridiken är föränderlig med nya rättsfall och lagstiftning hela tiden. Sammanställningen börjar med en inledning om idrottens förrättsliggande skriven av professor Bo Carlsson vid Lunds universitet, avdelningen för rättssociologi vid sociologiska institutionen verksam i Idrottsvetenskap vid Malmö högskola. Vissa förkortningar finns under kapitel två. Tredje kapitlet och tillika första avdelningen består av idrottsjuridiska rättsfallssamlingen. Uppbyggnaden är att rättsfallen sammanfattas kort under 3.1 för att övergå i fulltext sammanställning längre fram. Under varje rättsfall finns min kommentar med för att förklara eller ge synpunkter för att väcka intresse samt lästips för djupare studier, jag vill påminna att det finns mycket mer skrivet, och att dessa är till för att ge läsaren en snabb överblick och är inte uttömmande juridiskt på något sätt. Kommentarerna under skatterättsfallen (RÅ) kan några gånger vara likartade i början då syftet varit att ge läsaren som inte är skattejurist en förståelse för uppbyggnaden av själva skattefriheten för de ideella föreningarna (idrottsföreningarna). Rättsfallsamlingen fortsätter med Arbetsdomstolens avgöranden som finns under 3.2 följt av Högsta domstolens avgöranden under 3.3. EG-domstolens avgöranden sammanställes under 3.4 med bl.a. Bosmandomen som är kanske det mest kända rättsfallet som berör idrotten. Under 3.5 finns sammanställningen från Regeringsrätten med bl.a. HIF- och Brynäs domen. Andra avdelningen i sammanställningen är utdrag, vissa i fulltext, av den mest aktuella lagstiftningen som berör idrotten. Jag vill dock påminna att lagstiftningen är föränderlig. Andra avdelningen är inte kommenterad och har inte några lästips. Syftet med denna sammanställning är, som tidigare påpekats, att läsaren får en överblick av lagstiftning som berör idrotten på olika sätt. Avdelningen börjar med EG- och konstitutionellrätt under 4.1 för att följas under 4.2 av agerande personer. Köp- och skadeståndsrätten behandlas under 4.3 och offentlig-, miljö- samt straff- och processrätt under 4.4. Arbetsrätten behandlas under 4.5. Associations- och förmögenhetsrätten under 4.6. The article is set to target several tensions, problems and possibilities in Finnish (and Nordic) men’s elite ice hockey, which have arisen due to increasing commercialization and professionalization. This process has accelerated simultaneously with the recent development and advances of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), in addition to the constant and general influences of NHL (i.e., Americanization). Thus, the essay will focus on Jokerit as an illustrative case. To state, Jokerit, founded in 1967, is a powerhouse in Finnish ice hockey, both sport- ingly and financially. The commercialization of Finnish elite ice hockey culminated in 2014/2015 when Jokerit joined KHL. This article reflects on Jokerit’s financial and legal challenges, as well as the commercial press and progress in Nordic elite ice hockey and thus on Jokerit’s drift towards KHL. In addition to these topics, the essay presents and discusses different aspects of the progress of KHL, as well as its reasons and consequences.

SHL and the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation stand as the principal force or engine behind the commercialization processes in Swedish sport, due to influences from the commercial culture of NHL (i.e., the ‘Americanization’ of sport and society). In addition, the impact of the KHL with regard to player migration has forced the league to look for new commercial alternatives and forms of organization. At the same time, Swedish sport in general is, like ice hockey, basically founded on and ruled by the hegemony of the Swedish Sports Confederation and its basically idealistic values. Thus, SHL is shaped by normative dualism as well as by an incipient commercialization process. The ambition of the following text in this respect is to describe and analyze this dilemma by applying the concepts of juridification and hybridity, in addition to providing general perspectives on the Americanization processes in ice hockey and by testing and illustrating this dilemma by the case of the Växjö Lakers, Ltd/Plc.

This article sheds light on the problematic, but urgent, relation between sport and its environmental effects by focusing on the development of internal policies in the Swedish sport movement as well as on external normative pressures for a sustainable environmental development. The materials in this study portray a passive (and blind) governance in relation to an official environmental policy at macro and meso levels, regardless of the manifestations of individual environmental projects in everyday sport practices. The analysis shows that the ideology of the autonomy of sport and the emphasis on self- regulation, regularly upheld by the Swedish Sports Confederation, is obsolete.

Fotboll utgör en fascinerande moralisk arena. Frågan är hur traditionella fair play-ideal påverkas av fotbollens tilltagande professionalisering. Studien belyser härvid hederskoder och den instrumentella attityden till spelregler. Hederskoder verkar vara heligare, och brott mot dem väcker starkare känslor, än brott mot spelregler, där gränserna ständigt testas. En annan fråga är hur olika "imaginära presentationer" (serietidningar och dataspel) förhåller sig till fotbollens krassa verklighet. I det här sammanhanget jämförs de traditionella serietidningars dygder med den digitala fotbollens fuskkoder.

We can observe an ongoing external, as well as an internal, juridification of football, which means that the legal system and a legal rationality has become to an increasingly degree mixed up with football. Whether applying an internal or an external perspective the juridification process and the regulation can be understood as an outcome of the increasing commercialization and professionalization of football. In the wake of the commercialization process various clubs have suffered, and still suffer, from overspendings, in Sweden as well as in other European countries. In this respect, the regulation of football licenses in Sweden, which was introduced in 2001, constitutes the main subject in this essay. The regulation was introduced by the Swedish Football Association, mainly as an internal response to the acceleration of expenses in Swedish football. By focusing on football licenses and their regulation the essay intends to shed light on the 'internal juridification of sport'. And by taking a departure in a socio-legal perspective, the regulation will be connected to a reflection on its impact on the development of football.

Genom att ställa frågan om huruvida idrottsvetenskap är eller kan bli (samhälls-)vetenskapligt intressant syftar Bo Carlsson i den här essän till att diskutera idrottsvetenskapens karaktär, status, utveckling och dess inneboende problem – samt dess inneboende möjligheter. Via en genomgång av ämnesområdets utveckling, och dess relation till praktiken, diskuteras dess (bristande) hantering av bland annat normativitet, instrumentalism, kontextualism och relativism. Härigenom definieras ämnets samhällsvetenskapliga potential, och bland annat sportifieringsprocessen lanseras som ett möjligt bidrag till vår förståelse av vårt (post)moderna samhälle. Vidare granskas och presenteras några texter – varav några som tillkommit utanför den idrottsvetenskapliga disciplinen – som intressanta och framgångsrika exempel på denna utveckling av ämnets potential, bortom den mer eller mindre förblindande och förförande idrotten. Slutsatsen är att idrottsvetenskap har stora möjligheter att utvecklas som en intressant, relevant och givande samhällsvetenskap – om inte idrotten och dess praktik tillåts driva fram instrumentellt och normerande tunnelseende

This article takes a firm departure in the thesis of the juridification of sport. By initially presenting two cases that highlight the logics and problems in the interaction between sport and the law, we receive a fertile soil for analysing the rationalization processes, as well as the trivialization processes, that emerge in light of the commercialization of sport, the ‘eventification’ of society and when, consequently, the ‘law goes pop’. The analysis and the reflections are completed by mixing the thesis of Huizinga’s cultural analysis of play and sport, with Sherwin’s analysis of the trivialization of law. Interestingly, we find, in addition to the prominent rationalization process, tendencies of a comparable ‘trivialization process’.

Sport's relation to society could be grasped in its connection to science. Thus, there seem to exist two parallel processes: the scientification of sport and the sportification of science. Undoubtedly, science has become an important part in the development of sport, particularly in elite sport. As regards the relation between science and sport, an opposite trend has also been observed, in which sport logic influences the (popular) presentation of science. In this respect, this essay talks about the 'sportification of science', by making reference to 'Science Slam' and 'Grand Prix in Science'.

De senaste årens utveckling i det europeiska fotbollslandskapet har placerat svenska klubbar och allsvenskan allt längre ut i periferin på den europeiska fotbollskartan. Utvecklingen i de danska och norska förstaligorna har däremot varit positiv, med både sportsliga och kommersiella framgångar.

The purpose of this essay is to capture the significance of norms and virtues in computer games, with a major focus on digital sports, in relation to the traditional representations of sports in novels. The socio-legal design tells us that popular culture, as a discursive and normative agenda, has a vital moral impact on individuals in relation to virtues and values, an influence that is as good as the authority of formal law. By comparing the representation of sports in novels and digital sports, the essay discusses the transition of virtues

By describing and analysing normative uncertainties and the commercial immaturity in Swedish ice hockey (Swedish Hockey League/Swedish Ice Hockey Association), this article focuses on the tension and dialectics in Swedish sport; increasingly greater commercial attempts (i.e. entrepreneurship, ‘Americanization’, multi-arenas, innovations and public limited companies) have to be mixed with a generally non-profit making organization (e.g. the Swedish Sports Confederation) and its traditional values of health, democracy and youth sports and fosterage. In this respect, the elite ice hockey clubs are situated in a legal culture of two parallel norm systems: the tradition of self-regulation in sport and in civil law (e.g. commercial law). Indeed, the incoherent blend of idealism and commercialism in Swedish elite hockey appears to be fertile ground for hazardous (sports) management and indebtedness. This mix of ‘uncertainty’ and ‘immaturity’ has given rise to various financial trickeries and negligence, which have subsequently developed into legal matters. Consequently, the legal system appears to have become a playground for Swedish ice hockey. This article reflects on the reasons and the rationale in this frictional development by focusing on a legal case that comes under the Business Reorganisation Act. The analysis reveals support for a ‘soft’ juridification process in Swedish ice hockey in order to handle the charging tension of the two parallel norm systems.

Introduction to Special Issue: The Progress of Elite Ice Hockey, Beyond NHL: A Focus on (G)local culture(s), Migration, Entrepreneurship, Americanization and Oligarchism. Guest Editors: Bo Carlsson, Jyri Backman and Tobias Stark

Svensk idrottsforskning, 2005, nr. 3 var ett temanummer där vi fick den glädjande möjligheten att presentera den idrottsvetenskapliga forskningen vid Malmö högskola.1 Det har gått några år sedan dess och verksamheten har växt och erhållit en fastare struktur. Dessutom har forskningen blivit allt mer profilerad mot det som vi benämner som ”idrott i förändring”, vilket i grunden är en tydligt och strategiskt inriktad samhälls- och kulturvetenskaplig idrottsvetenskap. Vi ska i detta temanummer behandla ett antal idrottsvetenskapliga problem som anknyter till vår forskning. Vi har därför valt att lyfta nya forskare och/eller nya forskningsprojekt, som inte medverkade i 2005 års temanummer. Texterna kommer att handla om folkhemshästen, drömmar bland fotbollens ungdomsproffs, Parkour, idrottens betydelse för det civila samhället, idrottsdidaktiska utmaningar, Corporate Social Responsibility, idrottens arbetsmarknad och dess professionalisering, barnidrott i regi av ”Stadium Sports Camp”, samt rättvise- och kravmärkt idrott. Vi hoppas att dessa texter ska ge en liten, men dock rättvis, bild av våra forskningsintressen.

Today approximately two-thirds of all Swedish children participate in organized sports and most children encounter sports within the educational system, as physical education is part of the compulsory curriculum (Swedish Sport Confederation 2007). Outside school, children’s organized sports activities are connected to the sports movement, which is organized within the Swedish Sport Confederation, that is, Riksidrottsförbundet (RF). RF has a strong position in Swedish society and is to a large extent self-governing in relation to the government (Norberg 2002; Ministry of Culture 2008). However, it is still heavily dependent on public subsidies for activities for youth and children.

This volume will tactically put the stubborn challenge of defining sport in ‘intellectual brackets’ and instead reflect on the position and relevance of sport science – of studying and analysing sport

An introduction to a theme issue of the journal Sport in Society, in which the relationship between science and sports are being scrutinized from different perspectives.

As a departure from sport ethics and sociology of law this article deals with norms, rules, ethical principles and legal instruments that have an influence on the development of sport. The subject is connected to the Nordic regulation of sport, with a tradition of self-regulation and internal dispute resolutions; recently this 'autonomy' has been challenged by the interests of the market, different political pressures and by ethical discourses in the civil society. This is conceptualized as a state of normative tension and a 'sport model' in transition. The ethical departure focuses on the phenomenology of sport, illuminating internal values important to sport and the development of different conflict resolutions within sport organisations. The socio-legal perspective places sport in a social and normative context, focussing on various normative sources exterior to sport that will have an impact on the development of sport.

LdB FC, a women football club in Malmö, stands out as a good example of the increasing commercialisation and its impact on the conditions for a swedish women football club.

Sport has developed into an essential phenomenon in popular culture and in (post)modern society, and seems to have, which is the rational of this essay, a great deal to tell us about human life and (post)modernity. The process of sportification of popular culture is the main thrust of the argument, as well as presenting an alternative strategy for the study and understanding of the relationship between sport and society, and the influence and impact of sport. The essay does not focus on various added values, such as integration, health and economic growth. Neither is the ambition to present society’s impact on sport logics. The essay analyses, as an alternative, sport as a general (mental) horizon in society. It focuses on the sportification of popular culture, and specifically on the television reality show called Masterchef. The essay conceptualises docusoaps in light of the phenomenon of sport. In a wider perspective, initial attempts at sportification of science are also considered. Given the observed amalgamation of sport with the entertainment industry, the essay argues for a revitalisation of Guttmann’s theses, and suggests a broadened concept, in line with ‘from ritual to event(ification)’.

Humanistisk och samhällsvetenskaplig idrottsforskning har i Sverige dominerats av pedagoger, psykologer och historiker, som i mångt och mycket tagit sin utgångspunkt i den ideella idrottsrörelsen, eller i idrott som fysisk aktivitet eller i idrottens fostran och dess dygder, Men i takt med idrottens tilltagande professionalisering, kommersialisering och globalisering har även andra forskningsdiscipliner kommit att intressera sig för idrotten och dess utveckling som fysisk aktivitet och socialisationsarena, men även som underhållningsindustri - vilket är ett sent tillägg i gängse idrottsforskning.
