The Seventeenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys: Complete Release of MaNGA, MaStar, and APOGEE-2 Data2022In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 259, no 2, article id 35Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper, Local Volume Mapper, and Black Hole Mapper surveys.

The Fourteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and from the Second Phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment2018In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 235, no 2, article id 42Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since 2014 July. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the 14th from SDSS overall (making this Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes the data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (2014-2016 July) public. Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey; the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data-driven machine-learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from the SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS web site (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020 and will be followed by SDSS-V.

The Fifteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys: First Release of MaNGA-derived Quantities, Data Visualization Tools, and Stellar Library2019In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 240, no 2, article id 23Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Twenty years have passed since first light for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here, we release data taken by the fourth phase of SDSS (SDSS-IV) across its first three years of operation (2014 July-2017 July). This is the third data release for SDSS-IV, and the 15th from SDSS (Data Release Fifteen; DR15). New data come from MaNGA-we release 4824 data cubes, as well as the first stellar spectra in the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar), the first set of survey-supported analysis products (e.g., stellar and gas kinematics, emission-line and other maps) from the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline, and a new data visualization and access tool we call "Marvin." The next data release, DR16, will include new data from both APOGEE-2 and eBOSS; those surveys release no new data here, but we document updates and corrections to their data processing pipelines. The release is cumulative; it also includes the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since first light. In this paper, we describe the location and format of the data and tools and cite technical references describing how it was obtained and processed. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has also been updated, providing links to data downloads, tutorials, and examples of data use. Although SDSS-IV will continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be followed by SDSS-V (2020-2025), we end this paper by describing plans to ensure the sustainability of the SDSS data archive for many years beyond the collection of data.

The 16th Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys: First Release from the APOGEE-2 Southern Survey and Full Release of eBOSS Spectra2020In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 249, no 1, article id 3Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper documents the 16th data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys (SDSS), the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the Southern Hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey and new data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Survey programs, both of which were co-observed on eBOSS plates. DR16 has no new data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey (or the MaNGA Stellar Library "MaStar"). We also preview future SDSS-V operations (due to start in 2020), and summarize plans for the final SDSS-IV data release (DR17).

    Hyperfine-dependent gf-values of Mn I Lines in the 1.49-1.80 ?m H Band2015In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 216, no 1, article id 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The three Mn i lines at 17325, 17339, and 17349Å are among the 25 strongest lines (log(gf ) > 0.5) in the H band. They are all heavily broadened due to hyperfine structure, and the profiles of these lines have so far not been understood. Earlier studies of these lines even suggested that they were blended. In this work, the profiles of these three infrared (IR) lines have been studied theoretically and compared to experimental spectra to assist in the complete understanding of the solar spectrum in the IR. It is shown that the structure of these lines cannot be described in the conventional way using the diagonal A and B hyperfine interaction constants. The off-diagonal hyperfine interaction not only has a large impact on the energies of the hyperfine levels, but also introduces a large intensity redistribution among the hyperfine lines, changing the line profiles dramatically. By performing large-scale calculations of the diagonal and off-diagonal hyperfine interaction and the gf -values between the upper and lower hyperfine levels and using a semi-empirical fitting procedure, we achieved agreement between our synthetic and experimental spectra. Furthermore, we compare our results with observations of stellar spectra. The spectra of the Sun and the K1.5 III red giant star Arcturus were modeled in the relevant region, 1.73–1.74 μm, using our theoretically predicted gf -values and energies for each individual hyperfine line. Satisfactory fits were obtained and clear improvements were found using our new data compared with the old available Mn i data. A complete list of energies and gf -values for all the 3d54s(7S)4d e6D – 3d54s(7S)4f w6F hyperfine lines are available as supporting material, whereas only the stronger lines are presented and discussed in detail in this paper.

Energy Level Structure and Transition Data of Er2+2020In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 248, no 1, article id 13Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A majority of Er in the universe is synthesized by the r-process, which can occur in the mergers of neutron stars (NSs). The contribution of this element to the opacity of NS ejecta should be tested, but even the energy levels of first excited configuration have not been fully presented. The main aim of this paper is to present accurate energy levels of the ground [Xe]4f(12) and first excited [Xe]4f(11)5d configurations of Er2+. The energy level structure of the Er2+ ion was computed using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and relativistic configuration interaction (RCI) methods, as implemented in the GRASP2018 program package. The Breit interaction, self-energy, and vacuum polarization corrections were included in the RCI computations. The zero-first-order approach was used in the computations. Energy levels with the identification in LS coupling for all (399) states belonging to the [Xe]4f(12) and [Xe]4f(11)5d configurations are presented. Electric dipole (E1) transition data between the levels of these two configurations are computed. The accuracy of these data is evaluated by studying the behavior of the transition rates as functions of the gauge parameter, as well as by evaluating the cancellation factors. The core electron correlations were studied using different strategies. The rms deviations obtained in this study for states of the ground and excited configurations from the available experimental data are 649 and 754 cm(-1), respectively.

BACCHUS Analysis of Weak Lines in APOGEE Spectra (BAWLAS)2022In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 262, no 1, article id 34Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Elements with weak and blended spectral features in stellar spectra are challenging to measure and require specialized analysis methods to precisely measure their chemical abundances. In this work, we have created a catalog of approximately 120,000 giants with high signal-to-noise Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) Data Release 17 (DR17) spectra, for which we explore weak and blended species to measure Na, P, S, V, Cu, Ce, and Nd abundances and C-12/C-13 isotopic ratios. We employ an updated version of the Brussels Automatic Code for Characterizing High-accuracy Spectra (BACCHUS) code to derive these abundances using the stellar parameters measured by APOGEE's DR17 Stellar Parameters and Chemical Abundances Pipeline, quality flagging to identify suspect spectral lines, and a prescription for upper limits. Combined, these allow us to provide our BACCHUS Analysis of Weak Lines in APOGEE Spectra catalog of precise chemical abundances for these weak and blended species, which agrees well with the literature and improves upon APOGEE abundances for these elements, some of which are unable to be measured with APOGEE's current, grid-based approach without computationally expensive expansions. This new catalog can be used alongside APOGEE and provides measurements for many scientific applications ranging from nuclear physics to Galactic chemical evolution and Milky Way population studies. To illustrate this we show some examples of uses for this catalog, such as showing that we observe stars with enhanced s-process abundances or that we can use the C-12/C-13 ratios to explore extra mixing along the red giant branch.

Experimentally Measured Radiative Lifetimes and Oscillator Strengths in Neutral Vanadium2016In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 224, no 2, article id 35Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We report a new study of the V i atom using a combination of time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence and Fourier transform spectroscopy that contains newly measured radiative lifetimes for 25 levels between 24,648 cm-1 and 37,518 cm-1 and oscillator strengths for 208 lines between 3040 and 20000 Å from 39 upper energy levels. Thirteen of these oscillator strengths have not been reported previously. This work was conducted independently of the recent studies of neutral vanadium lifetimes and oscillator strengths carried out by Den Hartog et al. and Lawler et al., and thus serves as a means to verify those measurements. Where our data overlap with their data, we generally find extremely good agreement in both level lifetimes and oscillator strengths. However, we also find evidence that Lawler et al. have systematically underestimated oscillator strengths for lines in the region of 9000 ± 100 Å. We suggest a correction of 0.18 ± 0.03 dex for these values to bring them into agreement with our results and those of Whaling et al. We also report new measurements of hyperfine structure splitting factors for three odd levels of V i lying between 24,700 and 28,400 cm-1.

    Abstract [en]

Large-scale multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations are provided for the n <= 5 states in C-like ions from O iii to Mg vii. Electron correlation effects are accounted for by using large configuration state function expansions, built from sets of orbitals with principal quantum numbers n <= 10. An accurate and complete data set of excitation energies, wavelengths, radiative transition parameters, and lifetimes is offered for the 156 (196, 215, 272, 318) lowest states of the 2s (2)2p (2), 2s2p (3), 2p (4), 2s (2)2p3s, 2s (2)2p3p, 2s (2)2p3d, 2s2p (2)3s, 2s2p (2)3p, 2s2p (2)3d, 2p (3)3s, 2p (3)3p, 2p (3)3d, 2s (2)2p4s, 2s (2)2p4p, 2s (2)2p4d, 2s (2)2p4f, 2s2p (2)4s, 2s2p (2)4p, 2s2p (2)4d, 2s2p (2)4f, 2s (2)2p5s, 2s (2)2p5p, 2s (2)2p5d, 2s (2)2p5f, and 2s (2)2p5g configurations in O iii (F iv, Ne v, Na vi, Mg vii). By comparing available experimental wavelengths with the MCDHF results, the previous line identifications for the n = 5, 4, 3 -> n = 2 transitions of Na vi in the X-ray and EUV wavelength range are revised. For several previous identifications discrepancies are found, and tentative new (or revised) identifications are proposed. A consistent atomic data set including both energy and transition data with spectroscopic accuracy is provided for the lowest hundreds of states for C-like ions from O iii to Mg vii.

    Abstract [en]

Accurate and extensive atomic data are essential for spectroscopic analyses of stellar atmospheres and other astronomical objects. We present energy levels, lifetimes, and transition probabilities for neutral nitrogen, the sixth most abundant element in the cosmos. The calculations employ the fully relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and relativistic configuration interaction methods, and span the 103 lowest states up to and including 2s(2)2p(2)5s. Our theoretical energies are in excellent agreement with the experimental data, with an average relative difference of 0.07%. In addition, our transition probabilities are in good agreement with available experimental and theoretical data. We further verify the agreement of our data with experimental results via a reanalysis of the solar nitrogen abundance, with the results from the Babushkin and Coulomb gauges consistent to 2% or 0.01 dex. We estimated the uncertainties of the computed transition data based on a statistical analysis of the differences between the transition rates in the Babushkin and Coulomb gauges. Out of the 1701 computed electric dipole transitions in this work, 83 (536) are associated with uncertainties smaller than 5% (10%).

    Abstract [en]

We present a catalog of stellar properties for a large sample of 6676 evolved stars with Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment spectroscopic parameters and Kepler asteroseismic data analyzed using five independent techniques. Our data include evolutionary state, surface gravity, mean density, mass, radius, age, and the spectroscopic and asteroseismic measurements used to derive them. We employ a new empirical approach for combining asteroseismic measurements from different methods, calibrating the inferred stellar parameters, and estimating uncertainties. With high statistical significance, we find that asteroseismic parameters inferred from the different pipelines have systematic offsets that are not removed by accounting for differences in their solar reference values. We include theoretically motivated corrections to the large frequency spacing (Av) scaling relation, and we calibrate the zero-point of the frequency of the maximum power (vmax) relation to be consistent with masses and radii for members of star clusters. For most targets, the parameters returned by different pipelines are in much better agreement than would be expected from the pipeline-predicted random errors, but 22% of them had at least one method not return a result and a much larger measurement dispersion. This supports the usage of multiple analysis techniques for asteroseismic stellar population studies. The measured dispersion in mass estimates for fundamental calibrators is consistent with our error model, which yields median random and systematic mass uncertainties for RGB stars of order 4%. Median random and systematic mass uncertainties are at the 9% and 8% level, respectively, for red clump stars.

Energy Levels, Transition Rates and Electron Impact Excitation Rates for the B-like Isoelectronic Sequence with Z=24-302018In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 239, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We report calculations of spectroscopic accuracy for 513 states in the B-like ions with Z = 24-30. The energy levels and transition rates are calculated using the second-order many-body perturbation theory, while multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations are performed to support the former results. The present two sets of results agree excellently with each other, and can be used as benchmarks in the future. The electron-impact excitation (EIE) collision strengths are calculated based on independent processes and isolated resonances approximation using the distorted wave method. Based on the present atomic data, the spectral lines of these ions are simulated using a collisional radiative model. The amount of energy, transition data, and EIE collision strengths of high accuracy are significantly increased for several B-like ions of astrophysical interest, where experimental data are still very scarce. The results can be used in line identification, plasma modeling, and diagnostics of astrophysical plasmas.

    Abstract [en]

We have performed extensive multiconfiguration Dirac–Hartree–Fock calculations and second-order many-body perturbation calculations for F-like ions with Z = 24–30. Energy levels and transition rates for electric dipole (E1), electric-quadrupole (E2), electricoctupole (E3), magnetic dipole (M1), and magnetic-quadrupole (M2) transitions, as well as radiative lifetimes, are provided for the lowest 200 levels belonging to the 1s22s22p5, 1s22s2p6, 1s22s22p43l, 1s22s2p53l, 1s22p63l, and 1s22s22p44l configurations of each ion. The results from the two sets of calculations are in excellent agreement. Extensive comparisons are also made with other theoretical results and observed data from the CHIANTI and NIST databases. The present energies and wavelengths are believed to be accurate enough to aid line identifications involving the n = 3 and n = 4 configurations, for which observations are largely missing. The calculated wavelengths and transition data will be useful in the modeling and diagnostics of astrophysical and fusion plasmas.

    Abstract [en]

Using the multiconfiguration Dirac–Hartree–Fock and the relativistic configuration interaction methods, a consistent set of transition energies and radiative transition data for the lowest 546 (623, 701, and 745) states of the  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  , and   configurations in Mn xi (Fe xii, Co xiii, and Ni xiv) is provided. The comparison between calculated excitation energies for the n = 4 states and available experimental values for Fe xii indicate that the calculations are highly accurate, with uncertainties of only a few hundred cm−1. Lines from these states are prominent in the soft X-rays. With the present calculations, several recent new identifications are confirmed. Other identifications involving   levels in Fe xii that were found to be questionable are discussed and a few new assignments are recommended. As some n = 4 states of the other ions also show large discrepancies between experimental and calculated energies, we reassess their identification. The present study provides highly accurate atomic data for the n = 4 states of P-like ions of astrophysical interest, for which experimental data are scarce.

    Abstract [en]

We use the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) method combined with the relativistic configuration interaction approach (GRASP2K) to provide a consistent set of transition energies and radiative transition data for the lower n = 3 states in all Cl-like ions of astrophysical importance, from Cr VIII to Zn XIV. We also provide excitation energies calculated for Fe X using the many-body perturbation theory (MBPT, implemented within FAC). The comparison of the present MCDHF results with MBPT and with the available experimental energies indicates that the theoretical excitation energies are highly accurate, with uncertainties of only a few hundred cm(-1). Detailed comparisons for Fe X and Ni XII highlight discrepancies in the experimental energies found in the literature. Several new identifications are proposed.

    Abstract [en]

We present a consistent set of calculated energies and El, Ml, E2, M2 radiative transition data for the main n = 3 levels from the 3s(2)3p(4), 3p(6), 3s3p(4)3d, 3s(2)3p(2)3d(2), 3s3p(5), 3s(2)3p(3)3d, and 3s3p(3)3d(2) configurations for S-like ions from Cr TX to Cu XIV. The fully relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac Hartree Fock method implemented in the GRASP2K code is used to perform the present calculations. The excitation energies of the lowest 47 levels from the 3s(2)3p(4), 3s3p(5), and 3s(2)3p3 3d configurations, producing the strongest lines, are found to be in good agreement, reaching spectroscopic accuracy, with the latest experimental values for Fe XI evaluated by Del Zanna. Our energies can reliably be used to identify in astrophysical and laboratory spectra the 3s(2)3p(3) 3d levels in other S-like ions, which are mostly unknown. On the contrary, significant discrepancies with the 3s3p(4)3d levels were found, emphasizing the need for more detailed experimental studies. A few new tentative identifications are suggested. The benchmarks we present indicate that our consistent set of radiative data is accurate and can be used for spectral line modeling.

    Abstract [en]

Large-scale self-consistent multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and relativistic configuration interaction calculations are reported for the n <= 6 levels in Be-like ions from B II to Ne VII. Effects from electron correlation are taken into account by means of large expansions in terms of a basis of configuration state functions, and a complete and accurate data set of excitation energies; lifetimes; wavelengths; electric dipole, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic quadrupole line strengths; transition rates; and oscillator strengths for these levels is provided for each ion. Comparisons are made with available experimental and theoretical results. The uncertainty of excitation energies is assessed to be 0.01% on average, which makes it possible to find and rule out misidentifications and aid new line identifications involving high-lying levels in astrophysical spectra. The complete data set is also useful for modeling and diagnosing astrophysical plasmas.

EXTENDED RELATIVISTIC CONFIGURATION INTERACTION AND MANY-BODY PERTURBATION CALCULATIONS OF SPECTROSCOPIC DATA FOR THE N 6 CONFIGURATIONS IN Ne-LIKE IONS BETWEEN Cr XV AND Kr XXVII2016In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 226, no 2, article id 14Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Level energies, wavelengths, electric dipole, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic quadrupole transition rates, oscillator strengths, and line strengths from combined relativistic con guration interaction and many-body perturbation calculations are reported for the 201 ne-structure states of the 2s22p6, 2s22p53l, 2s2p63l, 2s22p54l, 2s2p64l, 2s22p55l, and 2s22p56l con gurations in all Ne-like ions between Cr XV and Kr XXVII. Calculated level energies and transition data are compared with experiments from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and CHIANTI databases, and other recent benchmark calculations. The mean energy difference with the NIST experiments is only 0.05%. The present calculations signi cantly increase the amount of accurate spectroscopic data for the n > 3 states in a number of Ne-like ions of astrophysical interest. A complete data set should be helpful for analyzing new observations from solar and other astrophysical sources, and is also likely to be useful for modeling and diagnosing a variety of plasmas, including astronomical and fusion plasma.

    Abstract [en]

Employing two state-of-the-art methods, multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and second-order many-body perturbation theory, the excitation energies and lifetimes for the lowest 200 states of the 2 s(2)2p(4), 2s2p(5), 2p(6), 2s(2)2p(3)3s, 2s(2)2p(3)3p, 2s(2)2p(3)3d, 2s(2)p(4)3s, 2s2p(4)3p, and 2s2p(4)3d configurations, and multipole (electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), and electric quadrupole (E2)) transition rates, line strengths, and oscillator strengths among these states are calculated for each O-like ion, from Cr XVII to Zn XXIII. Our two data sets are compared with the National Institute of Standards and Technology and CHIANTI compiled values, and previous calculations. The data are accurate enough for identification and deblending of new emission lines from the Sun and other astrophysical sources. The amount of high-accuracy data is significantly increased for the n. =. 3 states of several O-like ions of astrophysical interest, where experimental data are very scarce.

Energy Levels, Lifetimes, and Transition Rates for P-like Ions from CrX to ZnXVI from Large-scale Relativistic Multiconfiguration Calculations2018In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 235, no 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The fully relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method is used to compute excitation energies and lifetimes for the 143 lowest states of the 3s(2)3p(3), 3s3p(4), 3s(2)3p(2)3d, 3s3p(3)3d, 3p(5), 3s(2)3p3d(2) configurations in P-like ions from Cr X to Zn XVI. Multipole (E1, M1, E2, M2) transition rates, line strengths, oscillator strengths, and branching fractions among these states are also given. Valence-valence and core-valence electron correlation effects are systematically accounted for using large basis function expansions. Computed excitation energies are compared with the NIST ASD and CHIANTI compiled values and previous calculations. The mean average absolute difference, removing obvious outliers, between computed and observed energies for the 41 lowest identified levels in Fe XII, is only 0.057%, implying that the computed energies are accurate enough to aid identification of new emission lines from the Sun and other astrophysical sources. The amount of energy and transition data of high accuracy are significantly increased for several P-like ions of astrophysics interest, where experimental data are still very scarce.

Calculations with spectroscopic accuracy: Energies and transition rates in the nitrogen isoelectronic sequence from Ar XII to Zn XXIV2016In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 223, no 1, article id 3Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Combined relativistic configuration interaction and many-body perturbation calculations are performed for the 359 fine-structure levels of the 2s2 2p3, 2 s2p4, 2p5, 2s2 2p2 3l, 2 s2p3 3l, 2p4 3l, and 2s2 2p2 4l configurations in N-like ions from Ar XII to Zn XXIV. Complete and consistent data sets of energies, wavelengths, radiative rates, oscillator strengths, and line strengths for all possible electric dipole, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic quadrupole transitions among the 359 levels are given for each ion. The present work significantly increases the amount of accurate data for ions in the nitrogen-like sequence, and the accuracy of the energy levels is high enough to enable the identification and interpretation of observed spectra involving the n=3, 4 levels, for which experimental values are largely scarce. Meanwhile, the results should be of great help for modeling and diagnosing astrophysical and fusion plasmas.

Chemical Cartography with APOGEE: Mapping Disk Populations with a 2-process Model and Residual Abundances2022In: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, ISSN 0067-0049, E-ISSN 1538-4365, Vol. 260, no 2, p. 1-46, article id 32Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We apply a novel statistical analysis to measurements of 16 elemental abundances in 34,410 Milky Way disk stars from the final data release (DR17) of APOGEE-2. Building on recent work, we fit median abundance ratio trends [X/Mg] versus [Mg/H] with a 2-process model, which decomposes abundance patterns into a "prompt" component tracing core-collapse supernovae and a "delayed" component tracing Type Ia supernovae. For each sample star, we fit the amplitudes of these two components, then compute the residuals Delta[X/H] from this two-parameter fit. The rms residuals range from similar to 0.01-0.03 dex for the most precisely measured APOGEE abundances to similar to 0.1 dex for Na, V, and Ce. The correlations of residuals reveal a complex underlying structure, including a correlated element group comprised of Ca, Na, Al, K, Cr, and Ce and a separate group comprised of Ni, V, Mn, and Co. Selecting stars poorly fit by the 2-process model reveals a rich variety of physical outliers and sometimes subtle measurement errors. Residual abundances allow for the comparison of populations controlled for differences in metallicity and [alpha/Fe]. Relative to the main disk (R = 3-13 kpc), we find nearly identical abundance patterns in the outer disk (R = 15-17 kpc), 0.05-0.2 dex depressions of multiple elements in LMC and Gaia Sausage/Enceladus stars, and wild deviations (0.4-1 dex) of multiple elements in omega Cen. The residual abundance analysis opens new opportunities for discovering chemically distinctive stars and stellar populations, for empirically constraining nucleosynthetic yields, and for testing chemical evolution models that include stochasticity in the production and redistribution of elements.

    Abstract [en]

The multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) and relativistic configuration interaction methods are used to provide excitation energies, lifetimes, and radiative transition data for the 604 (699, 702, 704, 704, 704, and 699) lowest levels of the 3s (2)3p (2), 3s3p (3), 3s (2)3p3d, 3p (4), 3s3p (2)3d, 3s (2)3d (2), 3p (3)3d, 3s3p3d (2), 3s3d (3), 3p3d (3), 3p (2)3d (2), 3s (2)3p4s, 3s (2)3p4p, 3s (2)3p4d, 3s (2)3p4f, 3s3p (2)4s, 3s3p (2)4p, 3s3p (2)4d, 3s3p (2)4f, 3s (2)3d4s, 3s (2)3d4p, 3p (3)4s, 3p (3)4p, 3s3p3d4s, 3s (2)3p5s, and 3s (2)3p5p configurations in Cr xi, (Mn xii, Fe xiii, Co xiv, Ni xv, Cu xvi, and Zn xvii). Previous line identifications of Fe xiii and Ni xv in the EUV and X-ray wavelength ranges are reviewed by comprehensively comparing the MCDHF theoretical results with available experimental data. Many recent identifications of Fe xiii and Ni xv lines are confirmed, and several new identifications for these two ions are proposed. A consistent atomic data set with spectroscopic accuracy is provided for the lowest hundreds of levels for Si-like ions of iron-group elements of astrophysical interest, for which experimental values are scarce. The uncertainty estimation method suggested by Kramida, applied to the comparison of the length and velocity line strength values, is used for ranking the transition data. The correlation of the latter with the gauge dependency patterns of the line strengths is investigated.
