Global organizational science: A new reality for world-class organizations - Twilight of dawn or of evening?2021In: Emerging Trends in Global Organizational Science Phenomena: Critical Roles of Politics, Leadership, Stress, and Context / [ed] Adebowale Akande; Gerald R. Ferris; Pamela L. Perrewé, Nova Science Publishers, Inc., 2021, p. 3-29Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The geopolitical boundaries are fading in importance as corporations take on a more global perspective, and the technology of the 'new social media age' take a bird's-eye survey of this changing corporate terrain especially in turbulent times. This chapter concerns the real-world significance of global organizational science for the success or failure of organizations and human interactions. The science of organizations leads to the understanding of applications and interventions that benefit employees, work teams, organizations, management, customers, stakeholders, the community, and the larger society in which organizations are involved. The authors propose conceptualizing the science of organization as the world of work from multiple perspectives and paradigms in its goals of integrating the diverse insights of these other core disciplines and applying them to contemporaneous real-world challenges and opportunities for future inquiry in this domain. The authors next offer a taxonomy of a variety of reasons why global organizational sciences matter in an ever-changing business environment. A review and description of several emerging trends that are impacting organization life may tell us more about organizational science. The authors then summarize the evidence showing that organizational science's disputes and ongoing debates on the paradigmatic development are warranted. That striking an amicable balance can stimulate consensus that will later promote 'strong presence of mind, sense of professional confidence and of one another, and technological assurance'. This may indirectly affect the status of the discipline or field for better or for worse, and we conclude by saying without theory and method, that organizational practice is uninformed. Without practice, organizational theory is non-dynamic, stagnant, and moribund. Without a global organizational science, an organization or business firm loses tremendous diversity, synthesis in organizational research and theory, and substantial epistemology in the crucial need to connect to practice. High-performing corporations 'in a changing corporate terrain' operate like a well-oiled machine that operates capably through the effective coordination of many parts -- networks, culture, information systems, and talent mobility. The former issue: "Someone who works under you" has changed to "Someone who is a team member." Indeed, organizational hierarchies are collapsing, in successful global corporations, to promote cooperation and a winning attitude, much, like a sports team, comes together to win a game. Global organizational science is everyone's business and everyone's duty; it has the potential to become a touchstone in the lives of organizations. This is not the twilight of neutrality, but the twilight glow of dawn.

Arbetsbelastningen och dess effekter på läraryrket i Sverige2024Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The Twisted Logic of Remote Work: A qualitative study on employees’ perceptions and experiences of working remotely in the presence of Covid-192022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master thesis highlights employees’ perceptions and experiences of working remotely in the presence of the Covid-19 pandemic. The aim of the thesis is to understand how remote work during pandemic times impacts employees’ perception of their overall working life. In addition to that, it highlights employees’ experience of their social interaction, impression exchange, feedback sharing, trust-building, and performance at work. It strives to illuminate employees’ impression of their work-life balance and the specific company’s organizational culture when working remotely in pandemic times. The research problem is built upon possible reductions of informal interaction between employees when working remotely, which further on can cause separation of teams and a decreased employee identification with the organization. The research problem also has its foundation in the possible blurring of boundaries between two components, personal- and professional life, when working from home. The thesis was formed by a qualitative research approach where the empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews with employees at a specific company. The analysis illuminates insightful findings with support from previous research, theories, and concepts. The empirical results show that employees have a variety of opinions about their work situation. Some argued for positive work-life balance, workflow, and collaboration, whereas other interviewees pointed out that informal interaction, trust-building, and feedback-sharing suffer when working remotely. Empirical data claim that remote work influences employees’ identification and sense of belonging within organizations, especially for new employees. Additionally, work-life balance became more balanced for some but challenging for others. Another finding shows that the perception and experience about the overall work life and organizational culture might not only be impacted by Covid-19 but also by the fast-growing company size.

    Abstract [en]

One in three employees in Sweden experiences work-related health problems due to stress, high workload etc. This can result in ill health with problems such as anxiety and sleep problems. An increasing number of adults are changing careers due to these circumstances. This study examines which factors can impact a decision of changing careers, how the decision-making process is carried out and how a midlife career change can affect the individual’s well-being for the better. The study was based on aqualitative method with seven respondents, who had all made a career change. The study aims to answer the following questions:- Which influencing factors can lead to a career change?- What does the process of decision-making within career change look like for individuals experiencing ill health?- Can a career-change result in a better well-being, health and self-esteem?The following theories have been applied in the study: Hodkinson and Sparkes Careership theory, Albert Bandura's Theory of Self-efficacy and Work-life balance. The results of the study show that the main factors leading to a career change are mental health issues, stress and general well-being. Other common factors have been the desire to find a more meaningful job and achieve better balance in life. The result of the study also shows that the decision-making process for individuals with ill health changing careers can vary, where some underwent voluntarily and others involuntarily breaking points. The result also shows that individuals often make choices based on their action-horizon and well-known fields, but that logic, reason and emotions all come to play when changing careers. In the result it has emerged that support from relatives such as family and friends has been a significant part, but also that study and career-counselors had an important part. In terms of well-being, health and self-esteem, the results show that all respondents experience an improved overall-health after their career change.

Validating the Psychosocial Safety Climate Questionnaire: Integration of Findings from Cognitive Interviews in Germany and Sweden2019In: Scandinavian Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, E-ISSN 2002-2867, Vol. 4, no 1, p. 1-12Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Work-related stress and stress-related ill health are major concerns in modern Western societies. In the European Union, the joint Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) framework obliges employers to ensure the health and safety of workers in every aspect related to work, including psychological safety and health. Against this background, the aim of the present study was to gain a deeper understanding of the cross-cultural validity of the Psychosocial Safety Climate (PSC) instrument as a measure for organizational and managerial commitment to employee psychological health. By integrating findings from cognitive interview studies conducted in Germany and in Sweden, we found participants considered the focus of PSC on managerial and organizational perspectives as an important contribution to workplace surveys. However, we were also able to identify some challenges (e.g., in relation to translation of key concepts, the intended shift of referent, and the use of the intermediate response options) as difficulties in identifying a homogeneous PSC within an organization was also observed to some extent. We can conclude that integrating findings from cognitive interviews conducted in two European countries expands the existing knowledge of the PSC measure. This is achieved by a deeper understanding of problems that might occur when transferring PSC to a different context. The overall findings of the present study corroborate the cross-cultural validity of transferring the PSC measure from an Australian to a European context, and we consider PSC to be a valid and useful framework for targeting psychosocial risks and organizational procedures in a European setting.

    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund

The relationship between schedule influence, schedule satisfaction and work-related outcomes within Swedish elder care2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis aimed to investigate the relationship between influence over scheduling and schedule satisfaction with three central factors within the psychosocial work environment within the elder care sector: quality of work, work-life conflict and intention to quit. The JD-R model was used as theoretical approach as it provides a framework of the relationship between different work factors, characteristics, health and wellbeing, as well as a context to the different factors in the scope of the thesis. A survey was distributed among workers within the elder care sector in collaboration with a union (n=1202) and statistical analyses were made, establishing correlations between the different variables with the use of Pearson Correlation Coefficient as well as multiple linear regression analyses. The results revealed that higher degrees of influence over scheduling were associated with higher degrees of schedule satisfaction, and both variables were positively related with quality of work and negatively related with work-life conflict and intention to quit. To conclude, relatively strong relationships were found between the factors indicating that influence on scheduling and specifically schedule satisfaction are important factors associated with quality of work, work-life conflict and intention to quit within Swedish elder care.

Att lära sig självledarskap: En studie av ledare på digitala bolag2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Commission based salary is a salary system that in most cases is used in the real estate industry. This type of pay system can affect the motivation but can also contribute to a higher level of stress. At present, it is common for real estate agents to choose to end their careers after only a few years. The study's contribution is therefore to examine several factors about how the commission based salary affects the real estate agent, both from a positive and negative point of view. The housing market is cyclically sensitive, which contributes to the fact that the real estate agent receives very different incomes every month. In most cases this means that the real estate agent has to deal with job insecurity and stress during for example financial downturns. Qualitative interviews have been conducted with six different real estate agents, where work experience, gender and age were taken into consideration in the selection of the candidates. The result of the study shows that the commision based salary leads to a greater motivation for the real estate agent, which leads to a better performance. Furthermore, the results show that the real estate agent experiences an increased level of stress and job insecurity during some periods depending on what the market looks like and depending on the life situation the real estate agent is in. As a new real estate agent in the industry, job insecurity can be higher, especially if you start your career during a financial downturn. How a real estate agent is affected by the commission based salary depends on what type of personality you have and therefore this has been taken into consideration. The real estate agent’s personality affects, among other things, how you handle stress and how motivated you are.

Work-related cyber mistreatment from guardians, members of the public, and pupils in the context of educational work: From incivility to aggression2024In: Teaching and Teacher Education: An International Journal of Research and Studies, ISSN 0742-051X, E-ISSN 1879-2480, E-ISSN 1879-2480, Vol. 145, p. 1-10, article id 104603Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the nature of work-related cyber mistreatment from guardians, pupils, and members of the public as experienced by educational workers. Thematic analysis of data collected by semi-structured interviews with 31 teachers and principals resulted in two overarching themes; directly addressed cyber mistreatment in email and unwanted negative exposure on social media. The data spans over different types of cyber mistreatment, ranging from cyber incivility to cyberaggression. Educational workers typically feel powerless when exposed to mistreatment, and require support to manage these complex, novel, and distressing situations.

Könsstereotypiska val på grundskolenivå: En studie baserad på intervjuer med elever i årskurs nio angående deras gymnasieval2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Swapping programs or dropping out of upper secondary school has financial consequences for the school as well as society and the individual. Developing Career Management Skills (CMS) in primary school is seen as a way to achieve change. CMS is described by the Swedish National Education Agency as knowledge and skills individuals need to develop to be able to make well-founded choices for the future. It is all personnel’s, in primary school, task to work with. The purpose of CMS is thus to benefit society and the labor market, hence the connection of this study to occupational science. Since CMS benefits to be integrated into teaching for long-term development, this study's target group is teachers. The essay studies the work with CMS within primary school from a teacher's perspective as well as their knowledge and familiarity with the concept of CMS. The study also brings to light teachers' view of the distribution of CMS work in addition to a critical examination of the Swedish translation based on previous research and the empirical work of this study. The study is a contribution in the field of occupational science: career development and career guidance. The study's theoretical framework relates to institutional theory´s decoupling and isomorphism and curriculum theory of the relationship between society's demands, the governing documents and the practice within schools. The quantitative method is used with the intention of studying several responses linked to the purpose of the study and shows that CMS as a concept is unknown to teachers and that the work with CMS is based on subjective interpretations of the concept. The work is carried out by teachers in relation to the curriculum, but not always in relation to the Swedish National Education Agency’s description of CMS. The main responsibility for the work is seen by the majority as the entire schools, but empirical evidence shows that governance in relation to the concept is lacking. Since the concept is not accepted and open to interpretation, the study sees the problem of connecting CMS as it’s taught to the explanation of the concept. And further to get the desired effect in upper secondary school.

Jakten på framgång: - Fastighetsmäklares definition av framgång i sitt yrke och vilka faktorer som motiverar dom att nå framgång.2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Titel: The pursuit of success - Realtors definition of success in their profession and the factors that motivate them to achieve success.

Level : Final assignment for Bachelor Degrees within Real Estate Science

    Author: William Dam, Varo Dalawy

    Supervisor: Bengt Kjellgren

Aim: The purpose of this study is to be able to explain the definition of success in the real estate industry. The purpose is to be achieved by answering the following two research questions: How do real estate agents define success in their profession? What factors motivate real estate agents to succeed (or become successful) in their profession?

Method: This study has applied a quantitative method. The empirical material in this study has been collected through a survey that was randomly sent out to 161 randomly selected registered real estate agents all around Sweden.

Result & Conclusion: The results showed that the definition of success is mainly about a combination of a good salary and a balance in both work and private life. What drives real estate agents to their definition of success is based on the individual's financial situation. However, it is worth noting that the different respondents are at different stages in their careers. Thus, one can see a shift in their definition of success, on the realtors who have been in the industry for a long period.

Contribution of the thesis: This study has contributed to the real estate industry through additional knowledge regarding the real estate agent's view of success, and how it is defined. This work also provides a contribution regarding the motivational factors that base the real estate agent's definition of success.

Suggestions for future research: The empirical material in this study is based on questionnaires. A proposal for further research is to apply for interviews. This enables a more nuanced answer with a broader and several possible angles of approach to the current question being asked.

Keywords: Realtors, success, motivational factors, definition

"Flying under the radar": Postfeminism and teaching in academic science2024In: Gender, Work and Organization, ISSN 0968-6673, E-ISSN 1468-0432, Vol. 31, no 3, p. 710-726Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Neoliberal academia is marked by vertical and horizontal gender segregation, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is a particularly concerning case. Women with PhDs are underrepresented, and when they do participate, they are more likely than men to be in teaching-intensive roles. Beyond equality concerns, this is problematic because when women are interpreters rather than producers of disciplinary knowledge, the STEM enterprise remains gender-biased. Using data from a 2-year ethnography with physical science faculty in teaching-intensive roles, this paper argues that gender inequity is reproduced through postfeminist discourses of work-life balance. Participants who are mothers say they are flying under the radar at work. They self-surveille as they engage in both paid labor as university educators and unpaid carework at home. Importantly, when participants challenge hegemonic gender norms, they attract the radar's attention and are sanctioned. This study contributes to a growing understanding of how and why women are marginalized in STEM careers. Women with science PhDs fulfill their university's teaching mission with minimal support for the implied compensation of work-life balance, leaving the institutional structures which privilege men's participation in STEM research intact.

Credence in the Organization's Ability to Respond to Change: Implications on Work Engagement and Job Satisfaction in the Church of Sweden2020In: Frontiers in Psychology, E-ISSN 1664-1078, Vol. 11, article id 995Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

As part of society, religious organizations are exposed to contextual conditions and challenges. However, adapting to external conditions is an act of balance since too much compromising may risk having a negative effect on employees' perception of organizational authenticity and, in turn, employees' well-being and attitudes toward work. In this study, we examined how specific characteristics of the work, in terms of job demands (role conflict and emotional demands) and job resources (influence at work and social community at work), as well as employees' credence in the organization's ability to respond to change, relate to employee well-being within the Church of Sweden. In total 2,112 employees (58% participation rate) answered a web-based survey. The results of regression analyses showed that job resources and credence in the organization's ability to respond to change provided a clear contribution to the explanation of variance in work engagement and, especially, job satisfaction. However, the contribution of job demands was less clear. Moreover, to further the understanding of the association between employees' credence in the organization's ability to respond to change and employee well-being, the mediating effect of job resources was tested. The results showed that the association between credence and well-being is in part mediated by job resources. In sum, the study demonstrate that employees' credence in the organization's ability to respond to change is important to consider for understanding employee well-being within religious organizations. In conclusion, our study suggest that organizations that are built up on strong values and institutionalized beliefs, such as religious and faith-based organizations, need to tread carefully in the process of adapting to conformal pressure for change. This, since the actions and choices of the organization are important for employees' credence in the organization and, in turn, employee well-being. Implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.

A Work Environment Blind Spot: Exploring School Principals’ Organisational and Social Work Environments2022In: Scandinavian Journal of Public Administration, ISSN 2001-7405, E-ISSN 2001-7413, Vol. 26, no 4, p. 47-71Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines principals’ social work environment in the context of a series of school reforms inspired by new public management. With the point of departure in Job Demands and Resources, we put forward the following overall research question: which job demands and job resources are related to principals’ job satisfaction? The article has a mixed methods approach, combining material from questionnaires (466 participants) and interviews (15 participants). The results of the questionnaire indicate that job resources such as role clarity, influence, meaningfulness, and social community with senior managers were related to job satisfaction, while lacking job resources (influence, social community with senior managers) and experiencing role conflicts were associated with a higher intention to leave the profession. The interviews provide a more in-depth understanding of the shift of institutional logics within the school sector, enforcing boundaries between principals’ professional and managerial roles in accordance with New Public Managerial Ideas. The separation between profession and management contributes to principals’ organisational and social work environments being in a blind spot. This is not only a problem for the principals, but also a risk factor for the organisations themselves, as stress and ill-health among leaders tend to affect the entire organisation.

Being in a work environment blind spot – a study of school principals’ organizational and social work environments2022In: FALF 2022 - Framtidens arbete – arbetets framtid: Book of abstracts, 2022, p. 16-17Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Introduction

As part of the welfare sector, Swedish schools have undergone several reforms during the past few decades resulting in increasing and often conflicting demands on principals. Additional to implementing new grading systems and curricula, the sector has been impacted by market-oriented logic (new public management), resulting in a mix of professional and bureaucratic governance structures. Many of these reforms demand daily responses because principals are the key actors in both organizing and leading pedagogical practices, being the head of business and main respondent to local political initiatives. Hence, principals’ work environments have gradually deteriorated, with many experiencing high stress levels, which has led to high turnover and difficulty recruiting and retaining principals.

    Aim

Using JD-R theory as the point of departure, the aim of this study is to examine principals’ organizational and social work environment and attempt to answer the following research question: which job demands and job resources are related to principals’ job satisfaction and their intention to leave the job, and how do these job demands and job resources relate to changes within the institutional landscape as a result of the major political reforms the Swedish school sector has undergone over the last few decades?

    Method

We use a mixed methods approach combining responses to questionnaires (466 participants) and interviews (15 participants).  Participants were principals who were members of the school leader section (Lärarförbundet Skolledare) of the Swedish Teachers Union.

    Results

The questionnaire responses indicated that job resources such as role clarity, influence, meaningfulness, and social community with senior managers were related to job satisfaction, while a lack of job resources (influence, social community with senior managers) and role conflict were associated with higher intention to leave the profession. The interviews deepened the understanding of the shift in institutional logic within the school sector that has created boundaries between principals’ professional and managerial roles in accordance with new public management thinking. The separation of their professional and managerial roles has contributed to the development of a blind spot in principals’ organizational and social work environments. This is a problem for principals and a risk factor for the organizations themselves because stress and ill-health experienced by leaders tend to affect the entire organization.

Unemployment services for newly arrived migrants in Sweden: The privatization and rebureaucratization of the introduction programme2020In: Social Policy & Administration, ISSN 0144-5596, E-ISSN 1467-9515, Vol. 54, no 5, p. 719-732Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A recent policy reform in Sweden reorganized the management of newly arrived migrants' entrance into the labour market, which resulted in the Swedish Public Employment Service being given coordinating responsibility and introducing private service providers. Building on qualitative interviews with public employment officers and private actors, this study focuses on how the political contradictions in the new 2-year introduction programme are managed at the organizational level. In the article, it is argued that although both public employment officers and private actors experience difficulty separating unemployed migrants' need for social support from the workfare ambitions of the programme, aspects of privatization-such as freedom of choice and the service specification-further complicate this situation. Thus, the individualization aspects of the policy should be viewed as countering some of the more controlling aspects of the reform, thus, in effect, neutralizing its liberalizing tendencies.

Plats för vem?: Om arbetets inkludering och exkludering2022Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Predictors of work-related cyberaggression in a random sample of the Swedish working population2024In: International Journal of Workplace Health Management, ISSN 1753-8351, E-ISSN 1753-836X, Vol. 17, no 1, p. 57-71Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: With greater numbers of employees using computer-mediated communication, cyberaggression is becoming a more pressing problem for employees and their organizations. However, while a growing body of research illustrates its harmful effects, little is known about the factors that drive its occurrence. The authors therefore sought to identify factors that increase the risk of cyberaggression among employees.

Design/methodology/approach: A random sample of the Swedish working population (N = 11,556) was surveyed via Statistics Sweden (SCB), which produced a final sample of N = 2,847 (response rate = 24.6%).

Findings: Logistic regression analysis showed that emotionally demanding work, availability expectations, low perceived work quality, public sector work and being in a managerial position were related to higher levels of experienced cyberaggression. In addition, exploratory analyses indicated that some of these factors were more strongly related to cyberaggression enacted by organizational insiders compared to organizational outsiders.

Originality/value: Together, the authors' findings suggest that situational factors are stronger antecedents of cyberaggression victimization than personal factors. This has implications for organizations, as practical steps can be taken to reduce cyberaggression among employees.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how individuals are affected by working under precarious employment conditions. By conducting seven qualitative interviews with individuals employed in various insecure or temporary positions, as well as with a permanent employee and a manager at a company employing fixed-term workers, the study aims to gain a deeper understanding of how insecure working conditions impact people's well-being and everyday lives. The results reveal that respondents experienced both positive and negative effects of insecure employment arrangements. On one hand, many express concerns about their work situation but also find a certain sense of security within their respective workplaces. However, the desire for permanent employment is a common thread among all respondents. The uncertainty and anxiety contribute to stress, financial insecurity, and difficulties in maintaining a work-life balance for the participants. On the other hand, some respondents appreciate the flexibility, enjoy their colleagues' company, and value the sense of community in their workplace. In summary, the study demonstrates that insecure employment conditions affect individuals in different ways, both positively and negatively, providing a deeper understanding of the consequences of such employment arrangements.

    Abstract [en]

For organizations to be considered up-to-date and relevant, change is a necessity. The success of the change work is primarily dependent on the processes that are followed up and measures that are taken during the implementation. This study examines the psychosocial work environment during change work at a public cultural activity using Kotter's eight-step model. The purpose is to examine the employees' perspective on how the psychosocial work environment is affected during an organizational change. According to previous research, the main factors for successful change work are clear communication about the implementation and the organizational leader's interest in employee motivation, and that organizational listening can be used as a tool to increase commitment to the change. The study has an abductive basis and the implementation of this study has involved data collection through a survey designed from the dimensions Relationship and Leadership as well as Social Capital in the standardized survey tool COPSOQ with an associated open qualitative question. 53 employees from public cultural activities participated in the study, the results show insufficient communication and participation. Through the study, it can be concluded that the change work at the public cultural activities does not follow Kotter's eight-step model and that the employees do not feel they can participate in the change, this can affect the psychosocial work environment negatively for the employees.

Teamtandvård: hinder och öppningar för samarbete2024In: Dental24, no 2024-01-22Article in journal (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to contribute with more knowledge about gender discrimination and sexual harassment directet towards real estate agents in Sweden. Questions answered are: How do real estate agents perceive the organizational culture at their workplace? Does gender discrimination and sexual harassment occur in the industry? If so, to what extent, and how is it expressed? The study is based on a quantitative method, using an internet based questionnaire, answered by female real estate agents in Sweden. The results of the study show that the real estate agents are considered to have a culture in the workplace that allows conversations about the work environment, but on the other hand, less than half of them know whether the workplace has an approach for handling poor work environment health. The study also shows that gender discrimination and sexual harassment occur in the real estate industry against female real estate agents. It is shown that the person who discriminates/harasses is a manager, colleague/colleague in the industry and/or customer/speculator. The action can be expressed both verbally and physically.

    Abstract [en]

Violence in close relationships is becoming more common and is being raised more and more often in the media. Collective efforts to detect violence are made at various authorities today. Violence in close relationships affects all parts of life, which is why we have chosen to examine the impact of violence on working life and careers for women. In our profession, this is relevant as we are likely to come into contact with these women. Through the following questions, we sought the answers to our questions:

    ● What limitations and opportunities do workers at women's shelters think that abused women experience regarding working life and careers?

    ● How do workers at women's shelters work to promote the working lives and careers of abused women?

Six semi-structured interviews were conducted with women’s shelter workers who gave their views on how working life and careers affect these women they have good experience of helping. The results of the survey show that women who live with violence in close relationships face a number of limitations in order to be able to achieve a functioning working life. The control the woman has been subjected to results in several of her needs not being met, which affects self-esteem and drive. Contact with the authorities can be complicated and long processes can affect a woman's opportunities to get into working life quickly. In these processes, among other things, we see the importance of the women's shelter's supportive and guiding work.

    Abstract [sv]

Chefskap i relation till digitala aggressioner: Hur hanterar chefer i offentliga organisationer digitala aggressioner?2024Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to contribute to the theoretical understanding of how managers in public organizations handle digital aggressions. The study employs a qualitative research strategy with an abductive approach, where 10 managers from various public organizations have been interviewed to address the study's aim and research question, which also constitute the study's empirical material. The interviewees are active in various sectors including education, social services, healthcare, and police. In this study, our aim has been to explore the strategies managers use to manage and potentially prevent the digital aggressions they encounter.

The results of the study indicate that managers employ both proactive and reactive strategies in dealing with digital aggressions. Proactive strategies include presence, relationship-building, and setting clear boundaries. Being a present manager involves either physical or psychological presence. Relationship-building entails managers fostering positive work and professional relationships with their employees as well as external contacts. Furthermore, setting clear boundaries involves establishing and maintaining distinct boundaries between personal and professional life. One reactive strategy highlighted was social support. This involves managers seeking support from colleagues at the same hierarchical level to manage digital aggressions and promote well-being in the workplace.

“Staying home is easier than ever”: A qualitative study of experienced resistance at the pandemic workplace2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The goal of this thesis is to study changes that has happened regarding resistance, during the Covid-19 pandemic. The purpose is to, from an employee perspective, study whether the pandemic has led to any alterations to the resistance that normally occurs in organizations. Mainly in terms of what employees’ experience are the reasons to perform resistance, what conditions they feel they have to carry out that resistance, and how resistance is expressed by them during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study was conducted through seven semi-structured interviews and then analyzed through thematic analysis. One of the main results is that the participants of this thesis experienced that a lack of communication from their employers regarding the organizational changes regarding remote work versus work from the office, provoked dissatisfaction, and thereby willingness to perform resistance. A difference in preferences between employers and employees, where the participants who are employees tend to prefer remote work, is another aspect that leads to resistance. In terms of the conditions to perform resistance, one of the results is that the participants feel less monitored as their employer can not directly see what they are up to. The main point however, which also can be seen as a way to perform resistance is regarding symptoms. Participants felt like staying home and working remotely, and blaming it on having Covid-19 symptoms, was an easy way to have control over their remote working days, as employers would rather have them absent from the office if they have any symptoms, something that was not the case before the pandemic. Other ways to perform resistance when working remotely, such as spending time on social media, cooking, eating etc. can be framed in what is called routine resistance, which is the most common kind of resistance.

Whom do you know? Recruiters’ motives for assessing jobseekers’ online networks2021In: International Journal of Human Resource Management, ISSN 0958-5192, E-ISSN 1466-4399, Vol. 32, no 8, p. 1754-1777Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Network recruitment has become an essential part of the modern labour market. However, there are significant research gaps: 1) the development of social media has been crucial to the growth of social networks, yet we know little about its influence on network recruitment; 2) studies on network recruitment generally focus on employees’ rather than employers’ perspectives; 3) the context of most research is the US labour market, which then identifies a need for contributions relating to other countries. The aim of this study is to analyse and discuss recruiters’ use of SNS to evaluate the networks of potential candidates. To understand how and why recruiters assess online networks, we used qualitative data from a Swedish study. Our analysis showed that recruiters search the internet either to find information that helps them ascertain the candidate as trustworthy, or to evaluate the candidate’s social capital through the size and composition of their networks. For certain job positions especially, active management of one’s online networks thus becomes crucial. Finally, this study illustrates how network connections may undermine rather than build trust, and thereby challenges a belief in the positive impact of networks.

Övergången från kriminalitet till arbete2024Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish society is characterized by an increasingly extensive criminality. Research shows that the possibility of earning a living through work is something that reduces the risk of committing criminal acts, but despite this, there are difficulties for ex-criminals regarding the possibility of obtaining a job. The purpose of the study is to increase understanding of the work with ex-criminals' transition from crime to employment and how a career guidance counselor can respond to the target group in a beneficial way. The study aims to answer which factors in ex-criminals' transition from crime to employment may be beneficial for career guidance counselors to know, as well as how career guidance counselors with knowledge of these factors can promote ex-criminals' transition. In order to investigate ex-criminals' transition from crime to employment, we have chosen to use a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews. The selection consists of six professionals who work with ex-criminals in various ways. The results of the study show that ex-criminals' low self-esteem and insecurities regarding managing a job on the regular labor market are central factors in the transition from crime to employment. For career guidance counselors, a significant part of the work with ex-criminals involves increasing their motivation to achieve the goal of a job. It is about building up the individuals' self-esteem and countering their insecurities.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Inledning

    Finansiering

Projektet finansieras av AFA försäkring (dnr 210121).

Can Job Demands and Job Resources Predict Bystander Behaviour in Workplace Bullying? A Longitudinal Study2023In: International Journal of Bullying Prevention, ISSN 2523-3653Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Bystanders can affect workplace bullying by engaging in active or passive behaviours. However, there is a knowledge gapregarding how perceived work environment factors relate to bystander behaviour. The study aim was to investigate how job demands, and job resources are associated with bystander behaviour in workplace bullying. An online questionnaire wasdistributed to a sample of health care workers at two time points. Longitudinal data were obtained from 1144 respondents. Cross-lagged panel models were used to investigate associations between job demands, job resources, and bystander behaviours over time. The results showed that social support was positively related to active behaviours, whereas influence at work was negatively related to both active and passive behaviours. Perceived illegitimate tasks were negatively related to active and positively related to passive behaviours, whereas emotional demands had an unanticipated opposite pattern of relationships. The findings provide new information about how factors in the organisational and social work environment are associated with active and passive bystander behaviours in workplace bullying. Specifically, the results expand current understanding of workplace bullying by relating bystander behaviour to the organisational context.

How are witnessed workplace bullying and bystander roles related to perceived care quality, work engagement, and turnover intentions in the healthcare sector?: A longitudinal study2023In: International Journal of Nursing Studies, ISSN 0020-7489, E-ISSN 1873-491X, Vol. 138, article id 104429Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BackgroundWorkplace bullying is widespread in the healthcare sector and the negative effects are well known. However, less attention has been paid to bystanders who witness bullying in the workplace. Bystanders can affect the bullying process by engaging in active, passive, or destructive behaviors. There is a need to study work-related and organizational consequences of witnessing bullying and bystander behaviors.ObjectiveThe aim was to explore how witnessed workplace bullying and bystander behaviors are associated with work-related and organizational consequences, such as perceived quality of care, work engagement, and turnover intentions, among healthcare workers over time.DesignLongitudinal design. An online questionnaire was administered twice over the course of six months.Setting(s)Employees in the healthcare sector in Sweden, such as physicians, nurses, and assistant nurses, responded to the questionnaire.Participants1144 participants provided longitudinal data.MethodsStructural equation modeling was used to explore the associations between witnessed bullying, bystander behavior, work-related and organizational factors over time.ResultsWitnessed workplace bullying (B = − 0.18, 95 % CI [− 0.23 to − 0.12]) and the bystander outsider role (B = − 0.24, 95 % CI [− 0.29 to − 0.19]) were statistically significantly related to a decrease in perceived quality of care. Work engagement was statistically significantly predicted by all three bystander roles over time; positively by the defender role (B = 0.11, 95 % CI [0.05–0.17]), and negatively by the outsider role (B = − 0.23, 95 % CI [− 0.29 to − 0.16]), and the assistant role (B = − 0.32, 95 % CI [− 0.41 to − 0.24]). The outsider role (B = 0.12, 95 % CI [0.02–0.22]), the assistant role (B = 0.17, 95 % CI [0.03–0.30]), and witnessed workplace bullying (B = 0.18, 95 % CI [0.08–0.29]), all positively predicted increased turnover intentions at a subsequent time point.ConclusionsIn addition to the direct negative impact workplace bullying has on those targeted by it, witnessing bullying and taking different bystander roles can have work-related and organizational consequences by influencing perceived care quality, employees' work engagement, and their intention to leave the organization.

Witnessing Workplace Bullying: Antecedents and Consequences related to the Organizational Context of the Health Care Sector2022In: 13th International Association on Workplace Bullying and Harassment Conference, September 20-24, 2022, Book of Abstracts, 2022, p. 87-88Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Background and Aims

Workplace bullying is a severe global problem that affect individuals, organizations and society (e.g. Salin & Notelears, 2020). Studies have indicated that workplace bullying is more prevalent in health care than in other sectors. According to a recent systematic review of bullying among health care employees, up to one in four health care professionals are exposed to bullying regularly (Lever et al., 2018).

There has been a growing interest in the area of bystanders of workplace bullying (Coyne et al. 2017), but the role of the bystander, and research focusing on understanding the rationale for bystander behavior, remains an important area of investigation (Thompson et al., 2020). Specifically, additional research is needed in order to achieve a deeper understanding of the connection between the organizational context and bystanders’ behavior. Consequently, the aim of this study is to investigate how different organizational factors relate to bystanders’ behavior in a bullying situation.

In order to analyze the organizational context in relation to workplace bullying and bystanders’ behavior, the Job Demands-Resources theory (JD-R; Bakker & Demerouti, 2017), and the theory of Psychosocial Safety Climate (PSC; Dollard & Bakker, 2010) form the theoretical framework for the study.

    Design/Methodology

The present study is a quantitative survey study conducted in the health care sector, with physicians, nurses and assistant nurses as participants. Longitudinal data have been collected through questionnaires at two occasions, about six months apart (N = 1144 responded at both t1 and t2). Demographic questions, as well as scales from the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ II; Pejtersen et al., 2010), and measures of bystander behavior in response to witnessed bullying (Salmivalli et al., 1996; 2011), were included in the survey at both time points. Longitudinal structural equation modelling was conducted to investigate associations between psychosocial factors and bystander behavior over time.

    Results

Results indicated that PSC was positively associated with bystanders’ reports of defending the victim. Social support from coworkers, social community at work and perceived illegitimate tasks predicted constructive, passive, and destructive bystander behaviors in expected directions. Conversely, influence, as well as quantitative and emotional demands were counterintuitively related to bystander behaviors over time.

    Practical Implications

It is predicted that the health care sector will have a substantial need for staff in the future, while many of the current employees, especially nurses, leave their occupation. Providing a good work environment will be one of the key issues in order to attract, recruit and retain staff in the future. The study generates knowledge that creates opportunities for managers and organizations to work preventively, and increases their ability to understand and handle different types of bullying situations from both the victim’s and witnesses’ perspective.

    Originality/Value

This study adds knowledge to the area of bystander behavior in the health care sector, by relating bystander behavior to the organizational context.

Coping with workplace incivility in the foodservice industry2023In: Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality & Tourism, ISSN 1533-2845, E-ISSN 1533-2853, Vol. 22, no 3, p. 489-512Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to explore employees’ appraisals and coping responses to workplace incivility in the foodservice industry. Five group interviews with foodservice workers were conducted. 13 different types of experienced or witnessed incivility were identified. Positive-benign, irrelevant, and negative appraisals were found, as well as four major coping themes. These were active, passive, and proactive coping as well as reappraisal, encompassing twelve forms of coping behaviors. Additionally, workplace incivility was described as a daily stressor which can be expressed as a part of the workplace culture in the foodservice industry.

Workplace incivility as a risk factor for workplace bullying and psychological well-being: a longitudinal study of targets and bystanders in a sample of swedish engineers2022In: BMC Psychology, E-ISSN 2050-7283, Vol. 10, no 1, p. 1-14, article id 299Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The aim of the present study is to explore whether (experienced and witnessed) workplace incivility is a risk factor for (experienced and witnessed) workplace bullying. An additional aim is to explore whether experienced workplace incivility is associated with psychological well-being above and beyond the influence of (experienced and witnessed) workplace bullying on well-being.

Methods: A survey was distributed via e-mail to a panel of Swedish engineers. The survey was administered at three time points over one year. In total, N = 1005 engineers responded to the survey. Of these, N = 341 responded to more than one survey, providing longitudinal data. N = 111 responded to all three surveys.

Results: The results showed that the likelihood of being targeted by workplace bullying was higher for those who had previously experienced incivility, even when taking previous bullying exposure into account. There was also partial support for a higher likelihood of witnessing bullying at a later time point for those that had previously witnessed incivility. Additionally, the results showed that experienced workplace incivility was negatively related to psychological well-being over time, even when controlling for previous levels of experienced and witnessed workplace bullying and well-being. However, this result was only found over one of the two time lags.

Conclusion: The findings of the present study suggests that workplace incivility can be a risk factor for future bullying. In addition, the findings suggest that experienced workplace incivility exerts a unique negative effect on psychological well-being, even when accounting for exposure to workplace bullying.

Studie- och yrkesvägledning i ljuset av genomströmning2024Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine the relationship between primary school career guidance practices and student graduation rates. Primary schools lack systematic knowledge and statistical data at the unit level regarding students' outcomes after they leave school, despite being responsible for career guidance, students' decision-making competencies, and transitions.

The data collection consists of two parts. The second part uses findins of the first part. The first part is a new descriptive statistical findings on the graduation rates of youths in municipal schools in Helsingborg, which has been developed and processed. The second part involves interviews conducted with school leaders and career counselors at four units based on the statistical material. Mixed methods were used as the methodology, and the interviews were analyzed thematically.

In this specific context, it can be observed that those units with higher graduation rates also have practices aligned with previous research on success factors in career guidance.Graduation results are not tracked at the school units, even though graduation can be crucial for long-term labor market participation. This is based on the fact that none of the respondents have awareness of the students' graduation results. Furthermore, the schools have not specifically linked their career guidance efforts to students with low grade point averages, despite it being a crucial parameter for completing upper secondary education. However, all the investigated schools work compensatory education in various ways. These compensatory measures are primarily directed towards students with high absenteeism, low academic motivation, or students with foreign-born parents. Career guidance is described as partly dependent on individuals and thus unequal. Schools with high graduation rates have an effective division of responsibility, as well as practices and an approach that permeates the entire school. These schools have also coordinated and organized career guidance with stability among the teaching staff and school leadership, and they adopt a relationship-building approach towards students in need of compensatory measures.

Vägledning för individer med bakgrund i kriminalitet2022Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Marginalized Masculinities and Exclusion in the New Low-Skill Service Sector in Sweden2017In: Marginalized Masculinities: Contexts, Continuities and Change / [ed] Chris Haywood, Thomas Johansson, Routledge, 2017, p. 67-82Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter analyses low-skill service jobs in Sweden from a gender perspective. It then examines marginalization of masculinity by studying how the transformation from an industrial economy to a service- and knowledge-based economy has changed the labour market. Masculine work has been socially constructed as being dangerous, hard, dirty and sweaty, all of which has created a strong working identity. Low-skill service jobs include lower wages and more insecure employment contracts than the manual, industrial work that was available previously; however, it is often the only employment available for both men and for women. Dual labour market theory describes the labour market as dual and segmented. To analyse the gendered labour market from this theoretical perspective gives valuable contribution to understanding the polarized service sector. The data from Statistics Sweden show that male participation in high-touch jobs has actually increased in the country, both in absolute terms and in relation to the increase with its female counterpart.
