Social klass och socioekonomisk status i det naturvetenskapliga klassrummet2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Digitala verktyg i modersmålsundervisningen2016Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digital tools in the mother tongue education. The purpose of my work is to find out how digital tools can be used in the mother tongue education. As a teacher in different schools, I have seen how my teaching colleagues are using the computer as a tool in teaching. This has caused me to be inspired by my colleagues 'and students' interest in computers. My thought and my purpose with this work is to develop mother tongue education, thereby bringing it in to year 2016. I will find out what the difficulties and obstacles that modernization may face, and how it can be tackled and how we can overcome the difficulties. To answer this I will carry out a qualitative study in the form of semi-structured interviews. I'm not going to interview other teachers, but am using my educational capital to answer my questions but will, however, conduct interviews with my students who have mother tongue education. I analyzed the collected material from the interviews based on the motivation theory, but I also used and applied what previous research had said about digital tools in the education/mother tongue education. Based on the results from my interviews, as well as my analysis, I have come up with my development for my field that is a process that takes just five steps. Introduce compulsory mother tongue education for all students. Develop the mother tongue education and produce new, modern school textbooks and literature. Further educate mother tongue teachers. Using software like Fronter, SchoolSoft, Unikum, Google Drive and other school programs. Introduce a balanced, varied teaching with the help of Power Point, Smart Boards, the Internet and various Apps / learning games.

In vitro effects of skincare ingredients on keratinocytes2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The skin has several functions as the largest and one of the most complex organs of the body. One of the skin’s primary functions is to prevent water loss by retaining water to allow the skin to function in dry environments. The outermost layer, stratum corneum (SC), retains water loss as rehydration by natural moisturizing factors (NMFs). In this project, HaCaT cells were incubated with commonly used skincare ingredients such as urea, glycerol, transcutol, salicylic acid, and polyethylene glycol 4000 Da (PEG-4000) to evaluate their impact on cell viability, MTT proliferation assay and gene expression measurements by qPCR. The relationship between cell viability, gene expression, and water activity was also studied. The excipients showed a dose-dependent decrease in cell viability because osmotic pressure increased. One finding was that transcutol exhibited a protective effect against concentrations where osmotic pressure harmed the cells. PEG-4000, with a concentration of 10 % (w/v), showed an upregulation of elongation of very long chain fatty acid 4 (ELOVL-4). Gene expression of serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT) was low, with 10 mM transcutol, even though the cells had a viability of >100 %. It should have conducted an upregulation of SPT from the high metabolic activity in the cells. In conclusion, the viability and gene expression were most likely related to osmotic stress but should be further analyzed with digital holographic microscopy (DHM) and Western blot.

Går det åt skogen i gymnasieskolan?2011Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study five high school science teachers were interviewed around teaching and learning outside the classroom. The questions included in this work are: Why teach and learn outside the classroom? What are the obstacles or disadvantages with teaching outside the classroom? All teachers were positive about the use of teaching outside the classroom, but they all felt that they did not do it enough. Advantages these teachers could see with teaching outside the classroom were that it gave a better sense of reality, it was easier to work interdisciplinary, gave a good variety on the teaching, the place has positive significance for memory, it could increase motivation and interest among students to learn, and finally to it improves the social interaction between both students and between students and teachers. The obstacles or disadvantages teachers could see with the use of teaching outside their classroom was most rooted in time and schedule problems but they were also doubts about the pedagogical proceeds, the nature of science subjects and their syllabi, the students was inexperienced and that the teachers did not feel safe and comfortable in having classes outside classroom. The school's geographical location, weather, transportation, risk assessments, missing teacher collaboration and loss of appropriate learning places outside the classroom was also expressed be obstacles to be teaching outside the classroom.

Slå upp dörrarna för utomhuspedagogik: En kunskapsöversikt om utomhuspedagogikens lärandemöjligheter2021Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Det gröna ljudlandskapet – Ljudlandskapsekologi i urban miljö2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Urban green areas and their sound environments are linked to many health benefits. These areas are threatened to disappear with densifying cities and increasing noise pollution. In Swedish municipalities the aim is to preserve such areas. For this study four areas were visited in Malmö to evaluate their sound environments. The methods included sound measurements, soundscape ecology methods (sound recordings, spectrograms, acoustic indices) and the use of eight characteristics of green areas together with soundscape terminology. Using the eight characteristics together with soundscape terminology might be an effective way of evaluating sound environments, but will probably not compete with other perception-based and health impact assessment methods. On the other hand, soundscape ecology methods could play an important role in some parts of the quality assessment of sound environments, because of highly effective data collection, analysis and mapping, but requires an extension of the quality values in Swedish and European noise policy. Soundscapes should be viewed as resources with ecological and social values.

Rheological behaviour of probiotic bacteria dispersed in maltodextrin and sucrose solutions2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Probiotic bacteria are live microorganisms, which manifest health benefits in humans. The goal of this work was to characterize rheological properties of probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus reuteri) formulation in which maltodextrin and sucrose used as excipients. To fulfil the goal, first, thermal, structural and rheological properties of maltodextrin, sucrose solutions and probiotic bacteria slurry were investigated. Probiotic bacteria formulations were prepared by adding probiotic bacteria slurry to maltodextrin and sucrose solutions at different mass fractions. Finally, rheological properties of probiotic bacteria formulations were evaluated. From TGA, the water content of PB slurry including intracellular water found 81%. In DLS, three different types of aggregations of maltodextrin were observed and characteristic size of Probiotic bacteria found 1μm. The optical microscopy results indicate that at the liquid - air interface and in dehydrated state the bacteria are birefringent and arranged in an ordered fashion resembling a nematic phase. Most of the MD, SU and MD+SU solutions show Newtonian behaviour. MD and SU solutions show strong increase of viscosity with increasing concentration. This dependence can be described by using the Spurlin–Martin–Tennent’s model. The viscosities of MD+SU solutions increase with increasing proportion of maltodextrin. The oscillation data of MD and MD+SU solutions can be described by Maxwell model. The viscosities of MD, SU, MD+SU mixed solutions decrease with increasing temperature. This temperature dependency can be described by Arrhenius model of viscosity. At very high concentrations of MD, a deviation from this behaviour is observed. The probiotic bacteria slurry shows shear thinning behaviour at low shear stress and Newtonian behaviour at higher stresses. All probiotic formulations in which probiotic bacteria dispersed in maltodextrin and sucrose solutions show Newtonian behaviour. The viscosities of maltodextrin solutions and MD+SU mixed solutions decrease by addition of probiotic bacteria whereas mixed effects of probiotic bacteria addition on the viscosity of sucrose solutions were observed. The viscosity of probiotic bacteria slurry decreases with increasing temperature, although deviations from this behavior are seen at certain conditions.

Dual-feature photobioanodes based on nanoimprint lithography for photoelectric biosupercapacitors2022In: Journal of Power Sources, ISSN 0378-7753, E-ISSN 1873-2755, Vol. 517, article id 230677Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Direct transformation of solar energy into electrical energy by means of biological photosynthesis is considered as an attractive option for sustainable electrical energy production. Thylakoid membranes, the site of photosynthesis, are regarded as a promising biological material for the development of photoelectric biodevices, which produce electrical power consuming only light energy as oxygen evolves at photobioanode upon irradiation and biocathode converts it back to water. Therefore, in this work dual-feature photobioanode based on nanoimprinted gold substrates modified with thylakoids in combination with a capacitive part made of a planar gold substrate coated with a conductive polymer was designed and evaluated, providing open-circuit potential of -0.21 V vs. Ag vertical bar AgCl vertical bar KClsat and a capacitance of ca. 60 F m(-2) both at ambient light and artificial illumination of 400 W m(-2). Combination of thylakoid based dual-feature photobioanode with bilirubin oxidase modified transparent and capacitive indium tin oxide biocathode resulted in a photoelectric biosupercapacitor with remarkable characteristics at ambient light, viz. an open-circuit voltage as high as 0.74 V, which was stable upon charge-discharge cycles during ca. 2 h.

Elevers föreställningar om begreppen energi och energiomvandlingar: Vardagsföreställningar i relation till naturvetenskapliga förklaringsmodeller2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Elevers intresse för naturvetenskap i åk 52015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

With the method Material Driven Design (MDD) and ecological sustainability as a starting point, the study aim to explore how cellulose producing bacteria can be used in the development of a new material. MDD developed by Elvin Karana, Bahareh Barati, Valentina Rognoli och Anouk Zeeuw van der Laan, have been used, to in four steps develop a material proposition, map its technical and experiential qualities and thereafter apply it to a product. In this method, the starting point is the material and how its unique qualities can contribute to a value and meaning to a product. The purpose with the study have been to wake discussion about materials, their origin and environmental impact. At the same time, a possible alternative to conventional materials is proposed. The material have been conceptualized trough a physical model to clarify possible application areas. In the concept, the material is presented as an ethical and ecologically sustainable alternative to leather details in furniture and interior design. This is presented trough a physical model of a stool in wich the material is included and highlighted.

    Abstract [en]

The concept of locally produced food is nowadays widely known and used by both companies and private individuals. The term locally produced food has never been assigned an official definition, and therefore the opinions about it are separated. Many believe that locally produced goods are produced in their neighborhoods, others that it applies to all production within national boundaries, and another group believes that it depends on what product it is. This papers purpose is that through interviews with actors in the value chain of groceries, examine how they perceive the innovations that is locally produced food, how it is different for each operator and simply see what local produced means for their organization. We believe that locally produced food has emerged as an innovation, which means a new idea created by humans and its entry into the society. Along the model of this process, we analyzed how respondents were affected by the process and its first three steps, knowledge, persuasion and decision. Mainly drawn parallels to organic farming as more or less the contrast of the term locally produced food, and this opens up for discussion concerning the future of locally produced food. We have also found that respondents, both privately and in their professional lives, are affected by various communication channels that may have been the basis for the knowledge that later contributed to their decision about what the term locally produced food really means.

Kostens påverkan på den kognitiva förmågan - Undervisning i kost och näringslära i grundskolans tidigare år2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim whit our dissertaion is to examine some pupils in grade 6 how they express themeselfes concerning questions related to the conception Storm. Can they see it`s cause and effects? From the answers we also wanted to find out if the pupils achieve the goals in geograpy for the fifht schoolyear which can be related to weather, specificly storm. We used a method called qualitative interview´s which meant deepinterviews whit eleven pupils at a school in Malmö. The result showed that the pupils did not achieve the goals which are related to the curriculum in geography for the fifth year, concerning the conception Storm. It showed that their knowledege about the conception Storm to some extent is nonexistent,it also showed that they have a hard time to give an account for explain and motivate their answers. The answer`s the pupils gave is based on their own experience`s and can not be attached to any knowledge from school.

Urban biologisk mångfald - En jämförelse av sex europeiska städer2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

While biodiversity continues to decrease, urbanization has an opposite trend. As one of the greatest threats towards biodiversity it demands for the cities to adjust in a way that creates opportunity for the biodiversity loss to stagnate. The purpose of the study is therefore to analyze how six European cities work to support biodiversity and mainly to what extent their strategies correspondent to current research. The study consists of a systematic literature review, where the result constitutes the basis of an analysis and comparison of six European cities strategies for biodiversity. From the review, five factors could be identified as the most important to support biodiversity in urban environments – protection of important habitats, connectivity of green areas, restoration of habitats and green areas, public participation and a species-specific perspective. The six European cities that was included in the study is Berlin, Brussels, Hamburg, Copenhagen, London and Malmö. The result from the comparison shows that there are differences in how the cities work to support biodiversity in urban environments, towards each other as well as to current research. None of the cities include all five factors in their strategies.

Urban Mining in Malmö - An Investigative Study to Identify the Potential of Urban Mining2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master thesis depicts the topic of urban mining and its possibilities and challenges in the city of Malmö. Because of present day’s high consumption and construction our resources are becoming scarcer. In order to continue to build and consume the way we do, we need to look at other alternatives to obtain these resources. One sustainable alternative is urban mining which is based on society as a resource base where material accumulating over time is a metal storage that can be used through reuse or recycling. This thesis is limited to one type of urban mining which refers to unused cables and pipes that lie underground, so called hibernating cables. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the possibilities and challenges with urban mining in the city of Malmö and to research the Kabel-x urban mining method and its implementation possibilities. To successfully understand the challenges and possibilities a qualitative approach was taken where semi-structured interviews were conducted to see attitudes towards urban mining as well as to identify stakeholders who would work with an urban mining project in the future. The qualitative approach was complemented by a literary research which built the theoretical framework with theories like urban mining, urban metabolism and material flow analysis and sustainability assessments. The empirical discoveries depict topics such as ownership, knowledge-gap or skepticism when it comes to urban mining as well as methods of extractions, but also point to high interest and economic incentives with are in concordance with sustainability aspects. This lead to the conclusion that urban mining shows both possibilities and challenges in Malmö, which proves a challenging but worth implementation. Regarding Kabel-x method, its sustainability aspects and challenges with its implementation, it was concluded that on account of mostly skepticism and knowledge-gap stakeholders proved its implementation challenging but also interesting for urban development.

Kan företag bidra till en hållbar konsumtion? En fallstudie om företagens externa kommunikationsstrategier2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study investigates which kind of communication strategies companies use to affect and to convey knowledge about a sustainable consumption. The study is based on signal theory and information asymmetry to clearly show which strategies are best for companies to use to communicate externally. The strategies included in the study are certifications, standards & environmental audit, sustainability report & GRI, cooperation & UN sustainable development goals and finally ecolabelling. The study shows that all strategies are a prerequisite for companies to influence and communicate knowledge about sustainable consumption; Furthermore, give more credible sustainability work. It turned out all four companies used more or less of all strategies, but none of the companies used external auditing, which could help them achieve more trustworthy communication.

    Abstract [en]

This study has investigated if ready meals are climate friendly. Qualitative interviews were conducted to examine how food companies work to reduce climate impact from ready meals. A systematic literature review was carried out to examine ready meals climate impact by a limitation to life cycle analysis. The ready meals was compared to home cooked food and the collected empirics from the interviews and systematic literature review was analysed using the theory of ecological modernization. The results from the interviews show that food companies work to make use of resources in an efficient way in the production, as well as prioritize raw materials with low carbon dioxide emissions. The results from the systematic literature review indicate that ready meals have a higher climate impact, expressed in carbon dioxide equivalents. The conclusion of the study is that ready meals are climate friendly, but that home cooked food is a more climate friendly alternative and that there are development possibilities to make ready meals more climate friendly.

UTVÄRDERING AV DNA-EXTRAKTIONSPROTOKOLL FÖR FORENSISKA PROVER2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When handling low amounts of DNA, which often is the case with forensic samples, a successful DNA analysis is dependent on an effective DNA extraction protocol. Among many commercially available extraction methods for DNA, previous research has proved Chelex 100 resin, which is used at National Forensic Center in Linkoping, to be a quick and simple method without toxic substances, long waiting time or large costs, which in addition provides a high DNA exchange. At Applied Microbiology, Lund´s University, different chelex-based protocols for sampling and DNA extraction have been developed to optimize the present protocol at the National Forensic Center. In this study, sampling techniques and DNA extraction from previous studies was further combined with different tubes and swabs with the aim to, in best case, generate a protocol that is optimal for the most common crime scene samples. The results showed improved DNA yields with less extraction volume, which the tube in tube system made possible. When tube in tube system was combined with extraction protocols containing SDS, a higher DNA yield was observed. When these two factors were further combined with a cotton swab, whose shaft can be cut straight of, the DNA yield improved even more. A change from microfuge tubes, which is used at the National Forensic Center, to tube in tube system, the lysis volume could be reduced from approximately 600 µl to 200 µl which is a deciding factor for higher DNA yield.

    Abstract [sv]

Validering av Varicella Zoster virus och Herpes Simplex virus2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The approach of this validation study is to evaluate the adequacy for transferring the manual analysis method of ongoing infection of Varicella Zoster Virus (aVZV IgM) and Herpes Simplex Virus (aHSV IgM) with SIEMENS Enzygnost® to one of the automated instruments EUROIMMUN Analyzer I (ELISA) or DiaSorin LIAISON® XL. The study was carried out at Clinical Microbiology in Lund. Consecutive serum samples for VZV IgM (n=108) and HSV IgM (n=116) from the daily local flow of tests were analyzed, along with 10 positive for primary infection of VZV and HSV, confirmed by PCR or seroconversion, and 10 with reactivated infection of VZV and HSV. Beyond those, 10 serum samples confirmed positive for Cytomegalovirus (CMV) respectively 10 for Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) to test the cross-reaction between the three methods. The results from the validation of VZV in Analyzer I and LIAISON® XL gave an agreement of 93% and 94% respectively in the consecutive tests, 71% and 86% respectively in the primary infected tests and 75% and 58% respectively in the reactivated tests, and also a cross-reactivity (both positive and in between-values) at a total of 33% respectively 20% of the tests. The results from the validation of HSV in Analyzer I and LIAISON® XL gave an agreement of 84% and 87% respectively in the consecutive tests, 82% and 18% respectively in the primary infected tests and 40% and 10% respectively in the reactivated tests, and also a cross-reactivity (both positive and in between-values) at a total of 67% respectively 47% of the tests. According recommendations after the performance of this study, the analysis of HSV IgM should be excluded from both of the automated methods while VZV IgM should be controlled further in Analyzer I, with hopes that this new method could be more sensitive.

    Abstract [sv]

Titel: Tankar om Religionskunskap (Thoughts about Religion).

Impact and Perception of the Human-Wildlife Conflict; a Spatial Case Study of Management and Strategies in Skåne County2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study seeks to find the best strategies to be implemented to decrease the human-wildlife conflict (HWC). Other countries management practises and strategies to manage HWC was reviewed, in order to identify if Skåne county in Sweden could pursue improvements. To be able to tackle HWC, a greater understanding of people's ethical views were investigated and their perceptions of improvements were documented and researched. This study aims to provide quantitative data with web based surveys and spatial mapping of impacts from the HWC in Skåne county. It further aims to map the values that affects society caused by the HWC, and to answer the following questions; What are the optimal strategies in order to decrease HWC in Skåne? Where can cost effective improvements be implemented? This was both answered in the interviews conducted, and the gathered data. Optimal strategies that were detected where Skåne county can improve were; extensive implementations of ecoducts and passages for game, reducing the use of fencing, translocating, compensation actions, increase hunting opportunities and an installment of further game warning systems. Ethical views of different respondents’ towards the HWC were also analyzed. The online survey revealed that there were a difference in respondents views of HWC, based on if they were environmental science students, hunters or the general public. The gathered data and result, stated that the general public and the environmental students/workers were categorized in the ethical views of ecocentrism. The hunters ethical views could not be determined, due to the inconsistency of the answers of the questions. By showing differences and similarities in ethical views and how to manage HWC, strategies and incentives can more easily be adapted, to reach a better community base that can work together to reduce the HWC. Because of the different knowledge of the respondent groups and of their ethical views, there needs to be a broader incentive program that can maintain different interests of people and reduce conflicts, as well as preserve the biological state of ungulates in Skåne. In the online survey, all of the respondents agreed that the stakeholder, most suitable to handle and manage the problematics regarding HWC, is the government/county government. Other stakeholders that were believed suitable for managing HWC in Skåne, were organisations, for-profit companies and lastly, private self-acting individuals. Furthermore, the respondents beliefs on coexistence between humans and wildlife were also studied. The data showed that the general public and the hunters believed that future were to be positive, and the environmental students/workers believe the HWC would still be a problem in the future.

    Abstract [en]

The crowded environment of biological systems such as the interior of living cells is occupied by macromolecules with a broad size distribution. This situation of polydispersity might influence the dependence of the diffusive dynamics of a given tracer macromolecule in a monodisperse solution on its hydrodynamic size and on the volume fraction. The resulting size dependence of diffusive transport crucially influences the function of a living cell. Here, we investigate a simplified model system consisting of two constituents in aqueous solution, namely, of the proteins bovine serum albumin (BSA) and bovine polyclonal gamma-globulin (Ig), systematically depending on the total volume fraction and ratio of these constituents. From high-resolution quasi-elastic neutron spectroscopy, the separate apparent short-time diffusion coefficients for BSA and Ig in the mixture are extracted, which show substantial deviations from the diffusion coefficients measured in monodisperse solutions at the same total volume fraction. These deviations can be modeled quantitatively using results from the short-time rotational and translational diffusion in a two-component hard sphere system with two distinct, effective hydrodynamic radii. Thus, we find that a simple colloid picture well describes short-time diffusion in binary mixtures as a function of the mixing ratio and the total volume fraction. Notably, the self-diffusion of the smaller protein BSA in the mixture is faster than the diffusion in a pure BSA solution, whereas the self-diffusion of Ig in the mixture is slower than in the pure Ig solution.

    Abstract [en]

The rail bonus is a term used in traffic planning which has no clear definition. The purpose of this paper has been to define the rail bonus by doing a concept analysis. This has been done by looking at previous research and previous investigations of light rail projects. We have also studied current light rail projects in Lund and Malmö through interviews with key persons. The purpose of the interviews has been to get a better view on how the term is used today and to compare this with our definition. Our results have shown that a number of factors are the core of the concept of the rail bonus. The rail bonus is the growth in travel that occurs when new tramway replaces buses. One condition is that there is a good planning and a sound strategy, and that soft factors are taken into consideration. This leads to reliability for the tram, and traveling with the tram will increase. To easier prove the rail bonus the journey needs to be at least 40 minutes. Our concept testing has indicated that the interviewees identify some of these factors without seeing them in a bigger perspective.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine factors that can explain the low level of participation in elections among the disabled community in two daily activities in Malmö. The study will further look to investigate the extent to which organization related staffs are involved in increasing the accessibility for their care recipients to participate in elections. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, interviews have been conducted with both staff and care recipients of selected organizations. Interview responses have been combined with Verba, Schlozman and Brady's model: the civic voluntarism model, which aims to explain the reason why people do not vote. In summary, the results show that factors such as lack of knowledge, support and resources are some of the major causes effecting participation among the disabled community in the two daily activities in Malmö. This can further be explained through the lack of assistance made by organization to enable care recipients to participate in the election.

Hållbar utveckling i undervisningen - intervjuer med lärare i de tidiga skolåren2010Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Fluorescent Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Layers against Sialic Acid on Silica-Coated Polystyrene Cores-Assessment of the Binding Behavior to Cancer Cells.2022In: Cancers, ISSN 2072-6694, Vol. 14, no 8, article id 1875Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sialic acid (SA) is a monosaccharide usually linked to the terminus of glycan chains on the cell surface. It plays a crucial role in many biological processes, and hypersialylation is a common feature in cancer. Lectins are widely used to analyze the cell surface expression of SA. However, these protein molecules are usually expensive and easily denatured, which calls for the development of alternative glycan-specific receptors and cell imaging technologies. In this study, SA-imprinted fluorescent core-shell molecularly imprinted polymer particles (SA-MIPs) were employed to recognize SA on the cell surface of cancer cell lines. The SA-MIPs improved suspensibility and scattering properties compared with previously used core-shell SA-MIPs. Although SA-imprinting was performed using SA without preference for the α2,3- and α2,6-SA forms, we screened the cancer cell lines analyzed using the lectins Maackia Amurensis Lectin I (MAL I, α2,3-SA) and Sambucus Nigra Lectin (SNA, α2,6-SA). Our results show that the selected cancer cell lines in this study presented a varied binding behavior with the SA-MIPs. The binding pattern of the lectins was also demonstrated. Moreover, two different pentavalent SA conjugates were used to inhibit the binding of the SA-MIPs to breast, skin, and lung cancer cell lines, demonstrating the specificity of the SA-MIPs in both flow cytometry and confocal fluorescence microscopy. We concluded that the synthesized SA-MIPs might be a powerful future tool in the diagnostic analysis of various cancer cells.

”Var é publiken?” Undersökning av motiven bland Trelleborgs FF:s årskortsinnehavare2020Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose is to investigate the motives of season ticket holders to visit Trelleborg's FF home games. With the help of a survey, season ticket holders will be examined and categorized using the model Motivation scale for sport consumption. The data was collected through a survey of Trelleborgs FF:s current season ticket holders and then processed through the theoretical framework. Trails and James (2001) The Motivation Scale for Sport Consumption (MSSC) was the theoretical framework that formed the basis of the survey designed to examine the motives of Trelleborg's FF season ticket holders. This study showed that the most significant reason for visiting Trelleborgs FF:s home games was, for the season ticket holders, that they have an emotional connection with the team. When the team performs well, the season ticket holders feel a sense of accomplishment. A star emotional connection to the team and the club. One of the least significant aspects was, for the season ticket holders, how the match event was designed. There were few differences between the different age groups examined in this study. The differences found showed that the oldest (>68 years) and youngest (16-30 years) age groups, in contrary to the other age groups, considered that the aesthetic beauty associated with Trelleborgs FF:s home games and developing knowledge about the game of football was significant. In addition, the motives were similar regardless of age group. This study gives an indication that there are potential season ticket holders, with other motivational factors, that are absent due to the design of the match event. The match event could have been changed to attract more season ticket holders.

Mikroplasters spridning längs den svenska västkusten - En studie om koncentration och distribution av mikroplaster i marina sediment2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, a new research field regarding microscopic plastic fragments in the marine environment, called microplastics, have emerged. Microplastics derives from anthropogenic sources such as sewage treatment plants and the fragmentation of macro plastic. There are a limited number of studies regarding micro plastics, especially concerning Swedish waters, indicating the need for more research. In this study sediment samples were collected from the littoral area at seven different locations as well as one sediment sample from a deep sea at one of the sites. The aim is to investigate the concentration and distribution of microplastics along the Swedish west coast. A correlation analysis was performed between microplastics and two variables; grain size and salinity. The results showed that the highest concentration of micro plastics were found at the north part of the Swedish west coast and decreased the farther south the samples were taken. The results showed a strong correlation between microplastics and high salinity R 2 = 0, 61, and a correlation was seen between micro plastics and coarse sand with a R2 = 0.38. The results contribute to the understanding of how micro plastics are distributed in marine environment along the Swedish west coast. The researchers behind this study calls for sampling of all marine zones to further understand how microplastics are concentrated and distributed in the marine environment

Vilka faktorer ökar elevernas intresse för biologi?2009Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In many job sectors the recruitment process is something that is considered so complex and protracted that 60% choose not to complete it (Careerbuilder, 2013). The recruitment process in the real estate sector is an area where only slight research exists. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine and get a deeper knowledge about the recruitment process in real estate brokerage companies and if recruitment failure is an eventuel consequence of this process. The study is based on a qualitative method where six semi structured interviews have been done with recruitment managers from the different real estate companies that have been selected for the study. The theoretical outsets that have been used to analyze the result from the interviews is institutionalisomorphism and two different aspects within recruitment, which is the psychometric and the social aspect. From these two aspects the Matchningsmodell and the Bedömningsmodell have also been very important for the analytical chapter. The result shows for an example that the real estate companies have three different recruitment processes depending on which kind of candidate that is requested. These three processes both have their similarities and differences in those different interviewed companies. The main similarity is that all respondents use interviews as a recruitment method where the personality of the candidates are the most deciding factor. The significant difference in their recruitment processes is the first meeting. Since the largest recruitment of real estate brokers happens among the students there are many that want to access these as early as possible into the education. It occurs “mass recruitments” that some of the companies advocates and others oppose. The conclusion shows that the real estate sector is a job sector where companies, in many ways, follow the stream and do as their competitors do. Some companies choose to break free from the stream and go their own way but many decide to keep on doing as the others do. Recruitment failure occurs, like in other job sectors, but not only because of the recruitment process.

    Abstract [en]

There are teachers who plan their teaching without examining its effectiveness in overcoming students’ misconceptions. I think that a teacher who knows what misconceptions are common and lead to wrong answers has a better chance to develop their teaching in a way that will allow students to get rid of their misconceptions and hence choose correct answers. The purpose of the present study was to examine concept understanding in biology of Swedish high school students at the beginning of the final year of the science program. The tool used to explore students’ concept understanding was the Biology Concept Inventory (BCI). The test was answered by 66 Swedish high school students in the final year of the science program. The results from the Swedish students were compared to the results from 85 high school students in the United States. The results from both countries show that many students avoid alternatives in which a biological process include randomness and prefer to choose alternatives which means that the biological process is controlled by a driving force, for instance natural selection or a concentration gradient. Applications and limitations of the BCI are discussed. Suggestions for changes in education and further research are given.

Att läsa genetik: bättre än sitt rykte?2009Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Chemically defined mineral medium for Lactobacillus reuteri2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

CHEMICALLY DEFINED MINERAL MEDIUM FOR LACTOBACILLUS REUTERI ELINA BROMELL Bromell, E. Chemically defined mineral medium for Lactobacillus reuteri. Degree project in Biomedical laboratory science 15 Credits. Malmö University: Faculty of Health and Society, Department of Biomedical laboratory science, 2020. Several species of the genus Lactobacillus have probiotic effect, amongst them Lactobacillus reuteri. L. reuteri has positive effects on periodontal health, constipation, infant colic and atopic eczema. The bacterium needs to be robust enough to tolerate freeze-dry, transport and the acids and enzymes of the gastrointestinal fluids, thereto it needs to be viable enough to colonise the intended area. Viability and tolerance can be increased by strengthening the membrane. A stronger membrane can be achieved by optimizing the environmental conditions and the medium. To optimize the medium on a detailed level, the medium needs to be chemically defined. Since a semi-defined medium for L. reuteri, SD4 already exists, the next step will be to replace the undefined ingredients in SD4 to defined alternatives. The aim of the study was to make a chemically defined mineral medium for L. reuteri. The method chosen was to replace Casamino acids in SD4 with all 20 amino acids, glutathione and a nitrogen source. One-Factor-At a-Time (OFAT) was applied by removing one amino acid at a time and to evaluate which amino acids were essential or not essential for growth. The experiments resulted in a medium with di-ammonium citrate as nitrogen source and 14 amino acids, essential for growth. The study concludes that a new semi-defined medium for L. reuteri has been developed. The medium is still semi-defined since Tween 80™ has not been replaced with defined fatty acids. Growth requirements can differ between strains, therefore this medium is still only regarded as semi-defined for L. reuteri DSM 17938. Keywords: amino acids, defined mineral medium, Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938, medium optimization, OFAT.

Human lipoproteins at model cell membranes: Role of the lipoprotein class on lipid dynamics2017In: Scientific Reports, E-ISSN 2045-2322, Vol. 7, article id 7478Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

High and low density lipoproteins (HDL and LDL) are thought to play vital roles in the onset and development of atherosclerosis; the biggest killer in the western world. Key issues of initial lipoprotein (LP) interactions at cellular membranes need to be addressed including LP deposition and lipid exchange. Here we present a protocol for monitoring the in situ kinetics of lipoprotein deposition and lipid exchange/removal at model cellular membranes using the non-invasive, surface sensitive methods of neutron reflection and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation. For neutron reflection, lipid exchange and lipid removal can be distinguished thanks to the combined use of hydrogenated and tail-deuterated lipids. Both HDL and LDL remove lipids from the bilayer and deposit hydrogenated material into the lipid bilayer, however, the extent of removal and exchange depends on LP type. These results support the notion of HDL acting as the ‘good’ cholesterol, removing lipid material from lipid-loaded cells, whereas LDL acts as the ‘bad’ cholesterol, depositing lipid material into the vascular wall.

Undervisning av evolutionsteori i den svenska gymnasieskolan: En studie om pedagogiska metoder för att öka elevers förståelse för evolutionära mekanismer2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

"If you use pencillin, use enough" - A normative study on the Swedish action plan against antibiotic resistance2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The intention of this paper was to criticize the Swedish official action plan against antibiotic resistance with a focus on antimicrobial usage within livestock production. The aim was to strengthen and prove the thesis that there are deficiencies in the policy due to the exclusion of public participation and individual responsibility of meat consumption which is necessary for reducing antimicrobial resistance. The paper is based on a normative method with an argumentative analysis to confirm the thesis. Amartya Sen’s capability approach was used as a theory to strengthen the arguments that the consumer is a major factor in the reduction of antimicrobial usage and resistance due to the need for people to participate in public discussions and active participation in decision-making. The conclusion is that the policy is problematic due to the argument that the consumer is of essential importance in the reduction of resistance in terms of the demand which controls the production within livestock production.

Coordination crosslinking of helical substituted oligoamide nanorods with Cu(II)2020In: Supramolecular chemistry (Print), ISSN 1061-0278, E-ISSN 1029-0478, Vol. 32, no 3, p. 222-232Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Substituted oligoamides are short sequences of unnatural amino acids. Oligoamides made entirely of beta(3) amino acids yield helical monomers that, if N-acylated, assemble into nanorod structures via a supramolecular assembly motif. In this work, coordination crosslinking was used to create complex nanomaterials from oligoamides WKLWEL (KE) and WELWEL (EE) (the letters denote the analogous alpha-amino acids). Upon Cu(II) addition, atomic force microscopy and small angle neutron scattering revealed morphologic changes specific to KE but absent in EE. Vibration spectroscopy measurements revealed that Cu(II) can coordinate to the amine moieties of the side chains, without direct effect on the backbone amides. While coordination in excess solvent lead to regular nanostructures, fast drying of the sample yielded oligoamide templated crystallization of CuCl2. The metal coordination crosslinking of supramolecular assemblies as reported here is the first realization of a metallosupramolecular framework structure. [GRAPHICS] .

Comprehensive multidimensional study of the self-assembly properties of a three residue substituted beta(3) oligoamide2021In: Pure and Applied Chemistry, ISSN 0033-4545, E-ISSN 1365-3075, Vol. 93, no 11, p. 1327-1341Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Substituted (beta(3) oligoamides form a unique self-assembling system where each monomer folds into a helix containing approximately three (beta(3) amino acids per turn, yielding a geometrically well-defined cylindrical building block that, when N-acylated, is able to self-assemble head-to-tail into nanorods that can reach several 100 mu m length. It was shown in previous works that self-assembly can be achieved with a three residue long oligoamide as well that lacks any intramolecular H-bonds, yet it crystallizes in a helix-like conformation. The self-assembly properties of these small oligoamides are however elusive, suggesting a more complex system than the self-assembly of the H-bond stabilized helical monomers. Here we focus on the self-assembly behaviour of a three residue oligoamide, Ac-beta(3)[LIA] where the letters denote the side chain of the analogous a amino acid. Ac-beta(3)[LIA] can yield highly inhomogeneous suspensions in water with a broad range of large fibrous structures that seem to be very stable, yet occasionally fibre growth is only observed upon heating. The small size of the monomer suggests a highly dynamic equilibrium yet all previous attempts failed to clearly identify low molecular weight species. Therefore a special methodology was employed in this study to characterize the suspensions at different size ranges: SANS that is optimal to measure the small oligomers and cross sectional diameter of the assemblies, DLS that is sensitive to the large populations and therefore the length of the superstructures, and NMR that is sensitive to monomeric and small oligomeric form, in conjunction with IR spectroscopy to probe the folding and AFM to image the morphology of the assemblies. Temperature ramping was used to perturb the system to probe the dynamicity of the self-assembly. It was found that the anomalous self-assembly behaviour of Ac-beta(3)[LIA] is caused by its two stable conformations, a helix-building "horseshoe" fold and a linear conformer. The latter is exclusively found in monomeric form in solution whereas the horseshoe fold is stable in solid phase and in fibrous assemblies. Small oligomers were absent. Thus the self assembly of Ac-beta(3)[LIA] is arrested by the activation energy need of the conformation change; fibre growth might be triggered by conditions that allow increased conformational freedom of the monomers. This observation may be used to develop strategies for controlled switchable self-assembly.

FN:s vision av Millenniemålen och den svenska regeringens tolkning av dem: En innehållsanalys om hur hållbar utveckling tolkas med fokus på produktion och konsumtion2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis was a twostep qualitative content analysis. The first charted the kind of sustainable development that emerged in the Millennium Declaration (FN, 2000), the Rio Declaration (FN, 1992) and Agenda 21 (UNCED, 1992). The analysis was presented in an analysis matrix that was used as a template in the second part of the study to review how the Swedish government had implemented the UN Millennium Development Goals by analyzing the parliamentary tied proposition 2002/03:122. The analysis showed that the UN vision of sustainable development is not consistent with the Swedish government translation. UN documents had a better balance between the three dimensions of sustainability, government document focused on creating sustainable solutions by focusing on the economic dimension. The elaborated analysis matrix showed that the Swedish Government's interpretation showed a weaker or equivalent version of sustainable development such as that contained in the UN documents.

Repetition är kunskapens moder2010Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Livslångt lärande - svenskämnets betydelse i ett kunskapssamhälle2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]
