The aim of this study is to examine how school social workers address and support young people in their thoughts, questions, and experiences regarding sexuality. Additionally, it aims to analyze how school counselors can utilize their unique professional position within the school system to prevent issues and promote a positive relationship with sexuality and sexual health. To examine this we will consider the following; in what ways do school social workers work with and support students in their questions, thoughts, and experiences related to sexuality and how can school social workers utilize the counseling aspects in schools to promote sexual health? Previous research on the subject is limited and has a strong stance in the perspective of adolescent sexual behavior as a risk factor. Using a qualitative method and semi-structured interviews I have gathered data to explore the topic of how school social workers approach the topic of sexuality in their encounters with students and how the different approaches can promote a positive sexual health.
The findings reveal that school social workers have a multitude of approaches when it comes to dealing with complex issues such as sexuality and sexual health. They approach the topics in on-to-one sessions with students, in groups, on a structural and organizational level as a way to promote sexual health. However, findings show that the knowledge and education among professionals regarding sexuality as a topic needs to be evaluated and further developed as the school social worker finds that there is a lack of knowledge among professionals that work adolescents.
