This paper aims to paint a picture of how experts are used in the Swedish environmental debates. The paper examines and analyzes how politicians use experts and their knowledge in their arguments through an argument analysis. The findings point to experts being a central tool used to strengthen and legitimize political arguments. Politicians frequently reference scientific studies and research reports to create the impression that their positions are well-rounded and based on objective knowledge. Expertise serves both to increase credibility and as a rhetorical tool, with politicians sometimes selecting experts that support their predetermined positions rather than seeking a fully objective analysis. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how power is gained and kept within Swedish politics and highlights the importance of understanding the role experts play in this context. In conclusion, the debates demonstrate that expert sources play a crucial role in discussions on Swedish environmental policy, being used to shape, reinforce and legitimize arguments, ultimately influencing both political discourse and decision-making.
