Diskurser, alltså hur man ‘talar’ om något, formar och konstruerar hur olika fenomen utvecklas över tid. Normbrytande sexuella praktiker uppstår inte ur ett vakuum, utan skapas genom historiska processer. I denna uppsats presenteras en genealogisk odyssé av sadomasochismens historia, med utgångspunkt i Marquis de Sades skönlitterära verk Historien om Juliette eller lastbarhetens fördelar (1797) fram till nutid och den globala sensationen kring romanen Fifty Shades of Grey av E.L. James (2011). Sadomasochism har, från att först ha betraktats som något sjukligt och kriminellt, i nutid och efter uppståndelsen kring Fifty Shades-trilogin, lanserats i viss västerländsk media som en ‘trendig’ sexuell praktik. Syftet med denna uppsats handlar dels om att synliggöra hur normbrytande sexualitet och sadomasochism diskursivt har beskrivits och konstruerats i samhället under de drygt tvåhundra åren som skiljer romanerna, dels att genom Foucauldiansk diskursanalys undersöka hur sadomasochism som praktik skildras i de två skönlitterära verken. Frågeställningarna handlar om hur sadomasochism framställs i respektive verk samt vilka diskurser kring sadomasochism som framträder, och hur dessa har förändrats över tid. Foucaults begrepp uteslutningsprocedurer och förtryckarhypotesen har använts för att utkristallisera diskurser relaterade till sadomasochism/normbrytande sexualitet i böckerna. De två övergripande diskurser som identifierats i Historien om Juliette eller lastbarhetens fördelar är den rörliga förtryckardiskursen, som belyser att maktrelationer är flytande mellan karaktärerna i boken och att förtryck utövas från olika håll, samt den samhällskritiska diskursen som genomsyrar boken och där bland annat Sades språk ses som ett verktyg för att kritisera makthavarna och staten. De två övergripande diskurser som utkristalliserats i Fifty Shades of Grey är den konfidentiella diskursen som handlar om att huvudkaraktärerna, som i övrigt inte ägnar sig åt normbrytande beteende, utövar BDSM ‘i hemlighet’ och enbart med varandra, samt den individualistiska diskursen som är den samhällskritiska diskursens motsats; i Fifty Shades of Grey finns ett mer individuellt perspektiv på sexualitet som utgår från karaktärernas egna erfarenheter och upplevelser, istället för det samhällskritiserande där normbrytande sexualitet används som maktmedel. Den största skillnaden mellan framställandet av sadomasochism/BDSM i de båda verken med drygt tvåhundra års mellanrum, som också är avgörande, handlar om att det som definieras som BDSM idag innefattar en subjektiv sexuell vilja och inte sexuellt förtryck, maktrelationerna inom praktiken är rörliga och föränderliga och det kan uppmärksammas både ur ett individ- och samhälleligt perspektiv.

Discourses, i.e. how you ‘talk’ about something, shape and design how different phenomena develop over time. Norm-breaking sexual practices do not arise out of nothing but are created through historical processes. This essay presents a genealogical odyssey of the history of sadomasochism, starting from Marquis de Sade’s work of fiction The Story of Juliette or the Prosperities of Vice (1797), on to the present day and the global sensation surrounding the novel Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James (2011). Sadomasochism, which at first was being considered something morbid and criminal, has now, and after the uproar surrounding the Fifty Shades-trilogy, been launched in certain Western media as a ‘trendy’ sexual practice. The purpose of this master’s thesis is partly to make visible how deviant sexuality and sadomasochism have been discursively described and designed in society during the roughly two hundred years that separate the works of fiction, and partly to examine through Foucauldian discourse analysis how sadomasochism as a practice is presented in the two novels. The questions that this thesis aim to answer include how sadomasochism is portrayed in each novel and which discourses around sadomasochism that appear in both novels and how these have changed over time. Foucault’s concept of exclusion procedures and the oppressor hypothesis have been used to identify discourses related to sadomasochism and deviant sexuality in both novels. The two overarching discourses identified in The Story of Juliette or the Prosperities of Vice are the moving oppressor discourse, which show that power relations are fluid between the characters in the book and that oppression is exercised from different directions, and the social critical discourse, which is visible throughout the novel and were among other things, Sade’s language is seen as a tool to criticize those in power and the state. The two overarching discourses that are identified in Fifty Shades of Grey are the confidential discourse, which can be seen in the demeanor of the main characters, who otherwise do not engage in norm-breaking behavior, but practice BDSM ‘in secret’ and only with each other, and the individualistic discourse which is the opposite of the social critical discourse; in Fifty Shades of Grey there is a more individual perspective on sexuality that is based on the characters’ own experiences and emotions, instead of the perspective of social criticism where deviant sexuality is used as a means of power. The main difference between the portrayal of sadomasochism in the novels is that what is defined as BDSM today includes a subjective sexual desire and not sexual oppression, the power relations within the practice are fluid and changeable and this can be noticed both from an individual and societal perspective.
