Ethnic Discrimination in Working Life : A Qualitative Study on Ethnic Discrimination in the Swedish Labor Market (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether ethnic discrimination occurs in workplaces and in what way the employees have experienced ethnic discrimination. The purpose is also to investigate if there is a difference in how younger and older people experience discrimination in the workplace. This study has focused on stories about perceived discrimination in working life, and the reason for this is the lack of research in this specific field. The study has been done through semi-structured interviews with eight people, four of them being between the ages 40-70 years old and four of them being between the ages 20-35 years old. The results of the study have been analyzed by applying two theories which are stigma and postcolonial theory. The study analyzes and demonstrates the influence of power and workplace hierarchy based on different factors. The results show that six out of eight people in the study have at some point experienced discrimination in working life based on ethnic affiliation. The results of the study also show that there is a difference between the two age groups because the younger age group experienced discrimination to a lesser extent than the older age group.
