"Of course they're nearly in some kind of position of dependency I think" - Counsellors within the Swedish gender-affirming healthcare system's view of their work (English)
Abstract [en]
This qualitative study is based on semi-structured interviews with five counsellors across three clinics within the Swedish trans healthcare system. The aim of the study was to obtain an understanding of how the counsellors understand their roles within the gender-affirming healthcare process, as well as how they understand their patients’ experiences of said process. The gathered material was analysed through the lenses of Foucauldian biopower, Lauren Berlant’s ‘slow death’, Jaime Alonso Caravaca-Morera & Maria Itayra Padilha’s ‘trans necropolitics’ (as influenced by Achille Mbembe’s necropolitics), cisheteronormativity and empowerment and advocacy theory. The combination of these theories was used to highlight the ways in which the experiences of trans people seeking gender-affirming healthcare subjects them to various constraints and indignities, despite the fact that the counsellors tried to act positively on their behalf. The conclusions made were that the counsellors saw themselves as professionals who were there to contribute to investigating and assessing the presence and/or severity of patients’ gender dysphoria as well as inhabiting a supportive, informational and advocative role. The counsellors believed that their patients were both emotionally negatively and positively affected by the healthcare process. They also believed that their patients adapted themselves and their stories to better fit the healthcare processes’ demands.
