Success, challenge, or both? : A qualitative semi-structured interview study on success factors and challenges in work at HVB for children and youths in Sweden (English)
Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates different success factors and challenges in working at residential care homes (HVB-homes) for children and youth in Sweden. By conducting a qualitative semi-structured interview study at HVB-homes we can examine how the workers describe and perceive different factors of success and challenges in their work. In this way, we can determine what the most important factors are and how they affect the capability of the workers in their workplace. This thesis also uses system theory to explain how HVB-homes consist of systems within systems and how these systems can affect each other and thus the workers. The study concludes that there are more factors that point towards challenges than there are factors that point towards success, with the main obstacle for workers being the absence of certain functions. However, a challenge does not have to be an obstacle if the function is in place, for instance the function of consent. Let say if consent has been given to lift confidentiality between authorities, then the obstacle to cooperate is removed. Similarly, a success factor can become a challenge if the key function is removed. Success factors and challenges are therefore a matter of resources and assets. With the right resources the workers are able to use their knowledge and previous experience to achieve good care for children and youth placed in HVB-homes
