When do we hit the rock bottom? : A qualitative study of autobiographies On the subject of drug abuse (English)
Abstract [en]

Addiction and drug dependency is today one of the biggest social problems that we have in Sweden. There is a big probability to meet people with drug dependency as a future social worker. The purpose of the study was to analyse three diffrent autobiographies by people who managed to recover from an alcoholic and drugaddiction. The autobiographies was analysed using qualitative thematic text analysis. I have explored if the authors describes their turning points and if they have experienced their rock bottom. The result shows that it´s possible to distinguish a turning point in all the autobiographies. All turning points shows a life change that has happened but contains differences between each other. The rock bottom is harder to pick out but can be interpreted in two of the autobiographies. The conclusion of this study is that a turning point can look very different and there may be more than one. The study also concludes that it´s hard to know when a person hits their rock bottom since we don´t know what would happened if the person didn´t change their life at that point.
