This study critically assesses the repercussions of Sweden’s free school choice initiative, specically investigating its correlation with increased segregation within the education system. Furthermore, emphasis is also placed on how school segregation impacts the teaching of social studies, aecting both educators and students. The findings indicate that segregation may pose a barrier to the subject’s function of fostering democracy and create challenges in providing a diversity of perspectives. The implications underscore the necessity for comprehensive reforms to reduce the adverse effects on educational equity and societal cohesion, emphasizing the urgent need for policy adjustments.
