Artistic Research: A Potential Research Strategy for Cultural Studies

Abstract [en]

In this thesis, I venture into an interdisciplinary realm where Artistic Research (AR) and Cultural Studies (CS) not only coexist but actively inform and transform each other. The focus lies in examining the expansive capabilities of AR to contribute to broader domains of knowledge production, particularly within the dynamic and diverse field of Cultural Studies. Central to this inquiry is an experimental podcast that embodies the synthesis of artistic creativity with academic exploration. This project's narrative unfolds through the interlacing of various themes and methodologies drawn from AR and CS, demonstrating their potential to enrich and redefine each other.

Artistic Research, traditionally seen as a field concerned with the artistic process and outcomes, is re-envisioned here as an epistemic force capable of contributing profoundly to our understanding of culture, society, and the methodologies we employ to study them. The thesis argues for a broader acceptance and integration of artistic methods and insights into Cultural Studies research. It highlights how the fluidity, adaptability, and creative open-endedness inherent in artistic practices can lead to a richer, more nuanced understanding of cultural phenomena.

This study also critically reflects on the process and outcomes of creating the experimental podcast, an artistic endeavor deeply rooted in the principles and practice of AR, yet speaking directly to the concerns and methodologies of Cultural Studies. Through this practical exploration, we see firsthand how art can act as a form of inquiry, a method of understanding, and a way of knowing that extends beyond traditional academic boundaries.

In sum, this thesis is an invitation to rethink and reimagine the possibilities that emerge when we allow the worlds of Artistic Research and Cultural Studies to intertwine and inform one another. It is an exploration of how these intersections not only enrich the respective disciplines but also contribute to a deeper, more contextual understanding of our world.
