Significant common ground can be observed between the contexts of participatory arts practices and prefigurative social movements. The ways in which they are discussed and theorised, however, is largely separate, with prefigurative social movements being primarily discussed within political science, while discourse regarding participatory arts is more likely to take place in the fields of aesthetics, cultural studies or community development. This disciplinary separation constitutes a boundary that may hinder productive dialogue and mutual learning. This chapter aims to explore the interface between these two realms, illuminating shared ground, questioning binary oppositions, and sketching ways in which a stronger interface between participatory arts and prefigurative social movements might contribute to radical democratic renewal.
