Acceptance and Resistance : A Qualitative Study of Women’s Interpretations of Body Images Linked to Pro-Ana and Body Activism on Instagram (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This essay explores two heavily discussed digital body movements: body activism and the Pro-Ana movement. Through a qualitative research design, six women were interviewed to gain a deeper understanding of how individuals interpret images associated with these digital movements. To access these interpretations, the empirical data is contextualized through a theoretical framework of decoding messages. The theory is further advanced with the concept of pre-understanding to comprehend how and why women interpret information in the manner they do. Additionally, digital and media literacy is incorporated to understand how women receive messages and give meaning to text on Instagram. The findings indicate that women's interpretations of these movements are influenced by their pre-understandings through personal experiences and language.
