The challenge to maintain sobriety and a drug free lifestyle usually arises after theend of the substance abuse treatment when the individual returns to the samesituation as before. Previous studies have shown that aftercare is important inrelation to continued sobriety. With this study, we wanted to examine how socialworkers in southern Swedish municipalities treat individuals to avoid relapse intoaddiction after completed substance abuse treatment. We made a strategic andtargeted selection. The method we chose to use was a qualitative method withsemi-structured interviews to examine the social workerś perspective on thesubject and we interviewed six people in two different municipalities. The resultsof the study show that good planning after completing the treatment is required toincrease the individual's abilities to maintain sobriety. The individual needs astable life situation regarding their finances, housing, established contact withcare, employment, daily routines and strategies for their addiction.
