Analysis of Australia’s Progress with Sustainable Fast Fashion and the Role of ICT in Stimulating Social Change in consumer behaviour

Abstract [sv]

In 2015, following the United Nations Millenium Development Goals coming to their end, was the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. At the core of this agenda is 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that seek to create more equitable and sustainable conditions for all mankind and environment globally. As we are entering its eight year of implementation, this study seeks to explore the development of fast fashion and sustainable consumerism through the lens of sustainability communication through ICT in Australia.

Whilst consumers appear to be changing the way they shop for fashion, and the decision, unsustainable decisions are yet being made and this study unpacks individual consumer responses and explores innovative circular economy initiatives that seeks to support and educate consumers towards making more sustainable and informed decisions for the long-term.

Findings suggests that a number of industry peak bodies and NGOs are working tirelessly in producing sustainable outcomes across Australia and New Zealand, whilst utilising ICT platforms such as social media (Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn) to disseminate knowledge and awareness among consumers – which from the consumer perspective is gradually being absorbed. The perception remains between both industry and consumers in that more could and should be done by the Australian Government in shifting the dial towards more sustainable outcomes for the garment industry to recycle, repurpose and minimise waste.
