Green Social Work & Climate Refugees : An Analysis on Political Discourse (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to do research on the topic “green social work” and “climate refugees” with a critical discourse analytical approach. The world, not least Sweden, is facing a challenge to reshape social work and a challenge regarding how to handle people fleeing as a result of climate disasters. People fleeing from this type of catastrophe are yet to be recognized as refugees, due to the United Nations Convention from 1951, which only recognizes people fleeing due to war or persecution because of religious beliefs or sexuality, as refugees. Furthermore in Sweden there has been a law which protects people fleeing from climate disasters, but it was removed in 2021 which means that people no longer can seek protection in Sweden for this reason.

Now, it is important to recognize how green social work and climate refugees are being presented and talked about by researchers and Swedish politicians. By doing a critical discourse analysis, the result has shown that, in more modern times, these topics are being talked about but the focus of each party differs, where some focus on the economic discourse, some on gender, technique and education. The only party that has recognized the fact that climate refugees are yet to be recognized as actual refugees is the Green party in 2021. Other than this there is a consensus where every party mentions and pays attention to climate refugees, but the solutions that every party offer, as mentioned, differs based on their ideology, knowledge and truths.
